Men's Decathalon Recap

OSHKOSH, Wis. – University of Redlands (Calif.) junior Francis Nugent scored 564 more points than his qualifying mark to storm past the field in varying weather conditions for the NCAA Division III decathlon title. Nugent finished the event with 7,199 points to take home the first decathlon title for the Bulldogs.

Competing on Friday (May 24) in rain and wind gusts approaching 50 mph, the competitors put up big points in perfect conditions on Saturday (May 25). All eight All-Americans scored at least 150 more points than their qualifying standard.

Top-seeded senior Kyle Steiner of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point followed closely behind Nugent to take second-place with 7,111 points. Top-five finishes continued with a third-place performance by junior Ben Dillow of George Fox University (Ore.) with 6,925 points, a fourth-place listing by senior Clint Christy of the University of Wisconsin-River Falls with 6,894 and a fifth-place mark by senior John Daly of State University of New York-Plattsburgh with 6,786. Dillow placed second in 2005.

The final three participants taking home All-America honors were sophomore Fielding Pagel of Tufts University (Mass.) with 6,656 points for sixth-place, senior Steve Nowak of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh with 6,638 points for seventh-place and freshman Jeremy Lovell of Linfield College (Ore.) with 6,591 points for eighth-place.
