Men's Hammer Throw Recap |
 OSHKOSH,
Wis. - There was little suspense in the
men’s hammer throw as University of Wisconsin-La
Crosse senior Kevin Becker entered the
NCAA Division III Track and Field Championship
at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium
meet as a heavy favorite and captured
the title on his first throw.
Becker’s toss of 198-10
was under his season best of 215-3, but
was enough to withstand a late challenge
from State University of New York-Brockport
senior Jake Basher.
Basher, ranked ninth
in the regular season, blew past his season
best of 189-8 on his final throw, a toss
of 196-1. That vaulted him past Central
College (Iowa) junior Jason Fisher, who
was making his first NCAA Division III
appearance. Fisher followed Basher and
responded with his best effort of the
day at 192-9, but settled for third place.
University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh senior
Jacob Gabrilska was fourth (182-2) and
Bates College (Maine) junior Noah Gauthier
was fifth (181-10).
Becker, who competed in the 2006 NCAA
Division III meet but failed to place,
had only had two measured throws, fouling
on his last four attempts, although
his final throw appeared to be the most
massive of the day. None of top eight
were placewinners the previous year.
