Men's Long Jump Recap |
OSHKOSH,
Wis. - Loras
College (Iowa) senior Geoff Kaiser popped
a pair of big early jumps and hung on
for a half-inch win in the men’s long
jump at the NCAA Division III Championship
Thursday (May 24) at J.J. Keller Field
at Titan Stadium.
Kaiser, who had the year’s fourth-best jump (24-1 1/2) coming into the meet, was able overcome wildly varying weather conditions as fierce winds gave way to heavy rains. He posted leaps of 23-10 3/4 on both his second and third attempts to narrowly edge Greg Tyson of Heidelberg College (Ohio), Kamar James of Fisk University (N.J.) and Josh Meckes of Calvin College (Mich.). They finished second, third and fourth, respectively, after each jumping 23-10 1/4. Erik Diley of St. John’s University (Minn.) and Al Winsley of Mississippi College captured fifth and sixth, respectively, with jumps of 23-8 3/4.
All nine placewinners recorded their best marks in the first round of jumps, before the weather took a nasty turn.
It was the second straight runner-up
finish for Tyson. Lincoln University
(Pa.) senior Reggie Hopkins, who had
the NCAA Division III’s best jump this
spring, failed to advance to the finals
after placing eighth in the second flight
at 22-3.
