Women's 400-Meter Relay Recap

OSHKOSH, Wis. - Different year, same result for the City College of New York women’s 400-meter relay team.

The City College of New York quartet of Mechelle Barnwell, Alecia Watson, Sharnalee Steward and Jodyann Raymond repeated as national champions in the 400-meter relay race at the 2007 NCAA Division III National Championships on under overcast skies and breezy conditions.

The Beavers got out strong and never trailed during the ultra-quick race. Raymond, running anchor for City College of New York, grabbed the baton in front with a 10-meter lead and easily sped to victory. In running a NCAA Division III-season best time of 46.32 seconds, City College of New York set a J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium record in the event. City College of New York became the second straight school from the Atlantic region to repeat as 400-meter relay champions. The College of New Jersey won the 400-meter relay in 2004 and 2005.

After defeating Lincoln University (Pa.) last year at the NCAA Division III championship, City College of New York held off a determined Roanoke College (Va.) quartet of JaLeesa Osborne, Robin Yerkes, Kate Mason and Tonya Phillippe (46.67) and the Texas Lutheran University foursome of Jessica Raglon, Staci Jackson, Ashley Williams and Amber Meeks (47.23).

Lincoln University entered the race with the fastest qualifying time (46.55) of the nine finalists, but was disqualified after a baton-exchange violation between the first and second legs of the race.
