Women's Heptathlon Recap

OSHKOSH, Wis. – With half of the top 16 competitors returning from the 2006 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championship, one would expect great things from the heptathlon this year. The field did not disappoint.

National champion senior Christina Acquaviva from State University of New York-Cortland and runner-up junior Amy Reed from Messiah College (Pa.) were only separated by 47 points.

Acquaviva scored 5,189 points with Reed tallying 5,142. Acquaviva became a three-time All-American as she finished fourth in 2006 and fifth in 2005. Reed placed fifth last year.

Senior Jillian Crandall from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls finished third with 4,989 points after coming into the championship as the top seed. Junior Lindsay Lange from Hope College (Mich.) took fourth with 4,930 points, followed by senior Catherine Chappell from the Milwaukee School of Engineering (Wis.) in fifth with 4,893 and sophomore Alli Alberts from Washington University (Mo.) in sixth with 4,880.

Rounding out the 2007 heptathlon All-America honorees were junior Ashley Shaffer from Ohio Wesleyan University in seventh place with 4,688 points and senior Ashley Demarco from Emory University (Ga.) with 4,677.

Both Acquaviva and Reed’s point total bettered the previous meet standard of 5,012 points set last year by Christine Hendricks from Calvin College (Mich.) but will not be an official record because of wind aided events on Friday (May 24).
