Titans Encourage Fans To "Think Pink"
The UW-Oshkosh women's basketball
team is asking all fans to "Think Pink" when the Titans
host UW-La Crosse on Saturday (Feb. 9) in Kolf Sports Center.
The "Think
Pink" initiative is a global, unified effort for the Women's
Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) nation of coaches to assist
in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses,
in communities and beyond. In
2007, more than 120 schools unified for this effort and helped make
the inaugural year of the WBCA's "Think Pink" promotion
a success. The 2008 initiative has already unified over 600 women's
basketball teams for the cause.
In an effort
to promote cancer awareness, all fans attending UW-Oshkosh's 1 p.m.
game against UW-La Crosse are encouraged to wear pink. The first
100 fans wearing pink or making a donation to the American Cancer
Society will receive a free-T-shirt.
The UW-Oshkosh and UW-La Crosse women's basketball teams will wear
pink shoelaces and warm up in pink T-shirts. Both coaching staffs
will wear a pink article of clothing to support the cause. All breast
cancer survivors in attendance will be recognized at halftime.
Cancer effects
numerous people in many different ways. The American Cancer Society
Web site states that over one million people are diagnosed by some
type of cancer each year. Approximately one out of every two American
men and one out of every three American women will have some type
of cancer at some point during their lifetime. Anyone can get cancer,
but 77 percent of all cancers are diagnosed in people aged 55 and
older.
According to
the National Breast Cancer Foundation Web site, an estimated 200,000
women and 1,700 men are diagnosed with breast cancer each year.
Of these, an estimated 41,000 women and 450 men will die from the
disease.
The NCAA
has also joined the WBCA's "Think Pink" initiative by
implementing the "Calling For A Cure" campaign. The promotion
includes all NCAA women's basketball officials blowing a pink whistle
during games played Feb. 8-17.
