Woodworth, Giljohann All-Americans As
Titans Finish Fourth At NCAA Championship
Led by the
All-America efforts of Liz Woodworth (Sr.
Marinette) and Kristy Giljohann (Jr. Brookfield),
the UW-Oshkosh women's cross country team finished fourth
at the NCAA Division III Championship held Saturday (Nov.
20) at the Whitetail Golf Course in Colfax.
Williams College (Mass.),
a fourth-place finisher a year ago, captured the team
title with 110 points. Defending champion Middlebury
College (Vt.) finished second in the 24-team meet with
129 points, while Washington University (Mo.) placed
third with 149 points, UW-Oshkosh fourth with 174 and
Colby College (Maine) fifth with 202.
UW-Oshkosh's fourth-place
standing marked the 13th time that it finished in the top
four at the NCAA Division III Championship. The Titans
also placed first in 1987, 1988, 1991 and 1996; second in
1989, 1990 and 1995; third in 1986, 1994 and 1998; and
fourth in 1997 and 2000. UW-Oshkosh finished 11th with
311 points a year ago.
Woodworth finished second
in the individual competition by completing the
6,000-meter course in a time of 20:46. It was the third
All-America performance for Woodworth, who also placed
second at the NCAA Division III Championship in 2003,
eighth in 2001 and 42nd in 2000. The top 35 finishers at
the meet receive All-America mention.
Missy Buttry of Wartburg
College (Iowa) posted a time of 20:22 to win the
individual title for the second straight year. Buttry and
Woodworth were followed by Jenn Campbell and Caroline
Cretti of Williams College and Carter Hamill of Amherst
College (Mass.). Campbell finished third with a time of
21:25, while Cretti finished fourth in 21:26 and Hamill
fifth in 21:34. A total of 215 runners finished the race.
Giljohann receives her
first All-America accolade for the Titans after finishing
32nd with a time of 22:22. She placed 103rd at the NCAA
Division III Championship a year ago.
Other UW-Oshkosh
representatives at this year's NCAA Division III
Championship were Rosa Alvarez (Fr. Watertown),
Beth Baird (Fr. Waukesha), Jenny Graef (So.
Lena), Jackie Munoz (Sr. Oshkosh) and Emily
Steinhafel (Jr. West Bend). Munoz led the group by
finishing 68th in a time of 22:56, while Steinhafel
placed 83rd in 23:04, Graef 109th in 23:24, Alvarez 112th
in 23:25 and Baird 129th in 23:35. Munoz also finished
174th at the NCAA Division III Championship in 2003, 35th
in 2001 and 107th in 2000, while Steinhafel placed 85th
in 2003.

leads the UW-Oshkosh women's cross country team
into Saturday's (Nov. 20) NCAA Division III
Championship at the Whitetail Golf Course in
Colfax. Woodworth,
who finished second in last year's meet, eighth
in 2001 and 42nd in 2000, is one of four
UW-Oshkosh student-athletes returning to run at
the NCAA Division III Championship.
Also back to compete at the
national meet for the Titans are Kristy Giljohann (Jr. Brookfield), Jackie
Munoz (Sr. Oshkosh) and Emily Steinhafel (Jr. West Bend). Steinhafel
placed 85th in last year's championship, while Giljohann finished 103rd and Munoz
174th.
Other
UW-Oshkosh runners at the meet will be Rosa
Alvarez (Fr. Watertown), Beth Baird (Fr.
Waukesha) and Jenny Graef (So.
Lena).
UW-Oshkosh is
one of five schools expected contend for the
women's team title, with the others being
defending champion Middlebury College (Vt.),
Washington University (Mo.), Williams College
(Mass.) and UW-Stevens Point.
Woodworth is
expected to battle defending champion Missy
Buttry of Wartburg College (Iowa) for the women's
individual crown.

Titans To
Another NCAA Championship Appearance
Liz
Woodworth (Sr. Marinette) finished first for the
11th time in 12 races as the UW-Oshkosh women's cross
country team placed third at the NCAA Division III
Midwest Regional held Saturday (Nov. 13) at Credit Island
Park in Davenport, Iowa.
UW-Stevens Point scored 76
points to successfully defend its Midwest Regional title,
while Washington University (Mo.) finished second with
93, UW-Oshkosh third with 96, UW-La Crosse fourth with
119 and North Central College (Ill.) fifth with 157.
Rounding out the top 10
finishers were sixth-place Wheaton College (Ill.) with
180 points, seventh-place UW-Eau Claire with 234,
eighth-place UW-Platteville with 276, ninth-place
UW-Whitewater with 278 and 10th-place Illinois Wesleyan
University with 358.
A total of 37 teams took
part in the Midwest Regional, with the top four squads
joining qualifiers from seven other regions at next
Saturday's (Nov. 20) NCAA Division III Championship in
Colfax. UW-Oshkosh's third-place finish at the Midwest
Regional allowed the Titans to qualify for their 18th
NCAA Division III Championship appearance in 19 years and
20th overall. UW-Oshkosh captured NCAA Division III
titles in 1987, 1988, 1991 and 1996.
Woodworth successfully defended her Midwest
Regional title by completing the 6,000-meter course in a time of 20:40.
Megan Craig of UW-Stevens Point finished second in 21:13 and Amanda Kuca
of Concordia University third in 21:54.
In addition to Woodworth,
UW-Oshkosh also had Kristy Giljohann (Jr.
Brookfield) finish sixth in 21:25, Jackie
Munoz (Sr. Oshkosh) 23rd in 22:12, Emily
Steinhafel (Jr. West Bend) 32nd in 22:34, Rosa
Alvarez (Fr. Watertown) 35th in 22:38, Beth Baird
(Fr. Waukesha) 39th in 22:46 and Jenny Graef (So.
Lena) 56th in 23:00.
A total of 255 runners
finished the race, including Kuca, fourth-place Jackie
Mulrooney and eighth-place Marcia Taddy of
UW-Platteville, ninth-place Jessica Griffin and
13th-place Molly Morrison of North Central College,
12th-place Megan Kielar of UW-Whitewater, 15th-place Erin
Kelley of Carroll College and 17th-place Jesi
Christiansen of Wheaton College who qualified as
individual competitors for the NCAA Division III
Championship.
Titans To
Compete At NCAA Regional
| Liz Woodworth (Sr. Marinette)
is heavily favored to repeat as the individual champion as the UW-Oshkosh women's
cross country team runs at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional on Saturday
(Nov. 13) in Davenport, Iowa.
Nearly 35 teams from the
states of Illinois, Missouri and Wisconsin are
expected to compete at the event which is being
hosted by Augustana College (Ill.) at Credit
Island Park. The top four teams from the Midwest
Regional will advance to the NCAA Division III
Championship on Nov. 20 in Colfax.
Teams considered
to have a legitimate shot at landing one of the
four Midwest Regional slots in the NCAA Division
III Championship are UW-La Crosse, UW-Oshkosh,
defending champion UW-Stevens Point,
UW-Whitewater, Washington University (Mo.) and
Wheaton College (Ill.).
The latest NCAA Division III poll conducted by
the Women's Intercollegiate Cross Country Coaches Association had UW-Stevens Point
ranked third, UW-Oshkosh fourth, UW-La Crosse seventh, Washington University 12th
and UW-Whitewater 23rd.

Woodworth Named
WIAC Cross Country Scholar-Athlete
UW-Oshkosh's Liz
Woodworth (Sr. Marinette) has been named the 2004
WIAC Judy Kruckman Women's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete.
Woodworth successfully
defended her indvidual title to lead the Titans to a
second-place finish at the WIAC Championship held Oct. 30
in River Falls. She became the fifth person in league
history to win back-to-back crowns. Woodworth is a
two-time NCAA Division III All-American after finishing
second last season at the NCAA Division III Championship
and eighth in 2001.
Woodworth, who owns a
3.623 cumulative grade point average, is majoring in
medical technology with a minor in
chemistry/microbiology. She is a two-time College Sports
Information Directors of America Academic All-American,
claiming first team honors last year after earning second
team status in 2003.
Woodworth is a three-time
member of both the National Cross Country Coaches
Association All-Academic Team and the WIAC Scholastic
Honor Roll. She is a five-time UW-Oshkosh Honor Roll
selection and a three-time honoree on the school's Dean's
List. Woodworth received the WIAC Scholar-Athlete Award
for indoor track and field this past spring.
In addition, Woodworth has
served as a volunteer for numerous on-campus activities
and was a member of the school's Student-Athlete Advisory
Board in 2002.
Woodworth becomes the
eighth UW-Oshkosh women's cross country student-athlete
to receive the conference scholar-athlete award. She
joins Sara Holewinski (2002), Tiffany Speckman (1998),
Nicole Iverson (1997), Melissa Langlois (1992), Marina
Colby (1990), Cheryl Niederberger (1989) and Joan
Handziak (1983).
Woodworth concluded a stellar track and field
career at UW-Oshkosh this past spring by winning three individual titles
and helping the Titans to the top ranking at the NCAA Division III indoor
and outdoor championships. Woodworth was named the Outstanding Track Performer
at both national meets as she captured the 800-meter run indoors and the
800 and 1,500-meter runs outdoors. She also was a member of the Titans'
distance medley relay team that placed first at the NCAA Division III
Indoor Championship.
Woodworth's four-year
UW-Oshkosh career (2001-04) featured seven individual
titles, two relay crowns and 12 All-America mentions at
the NCAA Division III indoor and outdoor championships.
The WIAC Scholar-Athlete
Award is sponsored by Culver's. In order to be nominated
for the scholar-athlete award, a student-athlete must
have a minimum 3.25 grade point average, be in their last
year of competition, or on schedule to graduate this
academic year, and have competed for a minimum of two
years.

Titans For WIAC Title
Paced by
the one-two punch of Liz Woodworth (Sr. Marinette)
and Kristy Giljohann (Jr. Brookfield), the
UW-Oshkosh women's cross country team finished second at
the WIAC Championship held Saturday (Oct. 30) in River
Falls.
UW-Stevens Point, which
won its first team title last season, captured this
year's championship with 43 points. UW-Oshkosh scored 47
points to finish second for the second straight year.
UW-Stevens Point's margin of victory was the closest in
league history, surpassing the previous mark of five
points established in 1986 and 1999, when UW-Oshkosh
outdistanced UW-La Crosse, 37-42 and 36-41, respectively.
UW-La Crosse finished
third in this year's team standings with 66 points, while
UW-Whitewater placed fourth with 128 points,
UW-Platteville fifth with 132, UW-Eau Claire sixth with
171, UW-Stout seventh with 180, UW-River Falls eighth
with 210 and UW-Superior ninth with 273.
Woodworth covered the
6,000-meter course in a time of 21:14 to take the
individual title for the second consecutive year. She
becomes the fifth person in conference history to win
back-to-back crowns, joining UW-Oshkosh's Tiffany
Speckman (1996-97), Laura Horejs (1990-91) and Cheryl
Niederberger (1987-88) and UW-La Crosse's Tori Neubauer
(1982-83).
Giljohann, who finished
40th at last year's meet, placed second to Woodworth with
a time of 22:09. The top-five individual finishes were
completed by the third-place time of 22:14 by
UW-Platteville's Jackie Mulrooney, the fourth-place time
of 22:19 by UW-Stevens Point's Jenna Mitchler and the
fifth-place time of 22:25 by UW-Stevens Point's Megan
Craig.
UW-Oshkosh's team scoring
was completed by the 11th-place time of 23:04 by Jackie
Munoz (Sr. Oshkosh), the 15th-place time of 23:27
by Emily Steinhafel (Jr. West Bend) and the
18th-place time of 23:39 by Rosa Alvarez (Fr.
Watertown).
The Titans also had Jenny
Graef (So. Lena) finish 19th in 23:46, Beth Baird
(Fr. Waukesha) 20th in 23:49, Jessie Scheer (Fr.
De Pere) 41st in 24:42, Annette Pufall (Sr.
Ashland) 49th in 24:51, Crystal Cook (So. Lena)
70th in 25:35, Jill Gloudemans (Fr. Little Chute)

WIAC Championship
| The UW-La Crosse men and the UW-Stevens
Point women are favored to capture team titles at the WIAC Cross Country Championships
on Saturday (Oct. 30) in River Falls. The men's 8,000-meter race starts at 11
a.m. on the UW-River Falls campus, while the women's 6,000-meter race begins at
noon.
Expected
to provide UW-La Crosse with its stiffest
competition in the men's division are UW-Stevens
Point and two-time defending champion UW-Oshkosh.
UW-La Crosse enters the meet as the third-ranked
team in the NCAA Division III by the Men's
Intercollegiate Cross Country Coaches
Association, while UW-Stevens Point was voted
sixth and UW-Oshkosh 18th.
Individually, the top contenders are UW-La Crosse's
Andy Grupa, UW-Oshkosh's John LeRoy (Sr. Oshkosh), UW-Stevens Point's Mark
LaLonde and UW-Whitewater's Gary Garcia.
Defending champion
UW-Stevens Point will receive its strongest
challenge in the women's division from UW-La
Crosse and UW-Oshkosh. UW-Stevens Point is ranked
second in the NCAA Division III by the Women's
Intercollegiate Cross Country Coaches
Association, while UW-Oshkosh is fourth and UW-La
Crosse seventh.
UW-Oshkosh's Liz
Woodworth (Sr. Marinette), who won last
year's race by 61 seconds, is expected to repeat
as individual champion.

Against Rangers, Pointers
 The UW-Oshkosh women's cross country team ran against
UW-Parkside and UW-Stevens Point in a non-scoring meet held Friday
(Oct. 22) at the Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winneconne.
UW-Stevens Point had the
top-three individual finishers in the 5,000-meter
race as Erin Jasperson placed first in 19:55,
Sara Bias second in 20:02 and Heather Draeger
third in 20:36.
UW-Oshkosh, which rested several of
its top runners, was led by Toni Morning's (Fr. Colfax) fourth-place
time of 20:49 and Hollie Vandenberg's (Fr. Niagara) fifth-place
performance of 20:55.
The Titans also
had Lindsey Mansueto (Fr. Mayville) finish
11th in 21:24, Stephanie Genrich (Fr. Two
Rivers) 14th in 21:37, Megan Slempkes (Jr.

UW-Oshkosh Hammer Strength Invitational Title
 Liz Woodworth (Sr. • Marinette) ran comfortably
to the individual title as the UW-Oshkosh women's cross country team tied UW-Stevens
Point for a first-place finish at the UW-Oshkosh Hammer Strength Invitational
held Saturday (Oct. 16) at the Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winneconne.
UW-Stevens Point and UW-Oshkosh both
scored 33 points in the four-team meet, while
North Central College (Ill.) finished third with
70 points and Calvin College (Mich.) fourth with
102.
UW-Stevens Point,
ranked second in the NCAA Division III by the
Women's Intercollegiate Cross Country Coaches
Association, counted 33 points by placing five of
its runners in the top 13 individual finishes,
including four in the top seven. UW-Oshkosh,
ranked fourth in the NCAA Division III, tallied
33 points by placing all five of its scorers in
the top 11 individual finishes, including two in
the top three.
Woodworth, competing in the last home meet of her
illustrious UW-Oshkosh career, took individual honors after finishing the 5,000-meter
course in a time of 17:01. UW-Stevens Point's Megan Craig finished second in a
time of 17:51 and UW-Oshkosh's Kristy Giljohann (Jr. • Brookfield) third
in 18:06.
Other runners contributing to UW-Oshkosh's scoring
were Jackie Munoz (Sr. • Oshkosh), who finished eighth in a time of 18:37,
Emily Steinhafel (Jr. • West Bend), who placed 10th in 18:48, and Rosa Alvarez

Titans To Host
UW-Oshkosh Invitational
Five of the top 19 men's and two
of the top four women's cross country teams in the NCAA Division III will run
at Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winneconne on Saturday as UW-Oshkosh hosts its only
invitational of the 2004 season.
The 8,000-meter men's race, which starts at 10:45
a.m., features top-ranked Calvin College (Mich.),
fourth-ranked UW-Stevens Point, 14th-ranked
UW-Oshkosh, 15th-ranked Carleton College (Minn.)
and 19th-ranked Augustana College (Ill.).
Carthage College, Elmhurst College (Ill.) and
NCAA Division I UW-Green Bay will also compete in
the meet.
The women's 5,000-meter race, which begins at 11:30 a.m., features second-ranked
UW-Stevens Point and fourth-ranked UW-Oshkosh. Calvin College, North Central College
and NCAA Division I UW-Green Bay will also participate in the event.
Admission/Parking to the meet is $5 per

Langer Eighth, Vandenberg 25th
At Carthage College Invitational
 With more than half of its squad enjoying the weekend
off from competition, the UW-Oshkosh women's cross country team finished
sixth at the Carthage College Invitational held Saturday (Oct. 9)
in Kenosha.
Carthage College won the
six-team meet with 37 points, while Illinois Tech
finished second with 71 points, Northland College
third with 81, Edgewood College fourth with 85,
the Greater Milwaukee Track Club fifth with 102
and UW-Oshkosh sixth with 118.
UW-Oshkosh was led by the individual
finishes of Whitney Langer (Fr. New Richmond) and Hollie
Vandenberg (Fr. Niagara). Langer placed eighth in the 6,000-meter
race with a time of 25:34, while Vandenburg finished 25th in 26:35.
Carlie Wagner of Edgewood College won the race with a time of 24:02.
The Titans also
had Toni Morning (Fr. Colfax) finish 31st
in 27:07, Amanda Beard (So. Wausau) 32nd
in 27:07, Sheila Kruse (Sr. West Bend)

Notre Dame Invitational Champions
 It was a repeat performance for Liz Woodworth (Sr.
• Marinette) and the UW-Oshkosh women's cross country team as both entities
captured championships in the Gold Division of the Notre Dame Invitational held
Friday (Oct. 1) in South Bend, Ind.
Woodworth, a two-time NCAA Division
III All-American, completed the 5,000-meter
course in a time of 17:10 to coast to her second
straight Notre Dame Invitational title. Emily
Schnitkey of NCAA Division I Youngstown State
University (Ohio) finished second in a time of
18:05 and Ruth Limo of NCAA Division I University
of Cincinnati (Ohio) third in 18:13. Last year,
Woodworth won the Gold Division race of the Notre
Dame Invitational with a time of 17:23.
UW-Oshkosh, ranked
fourth in the NCAA Division III by the Women's
Intercollegiate Cross Country Coaches
Association, captured team honors with 119
points.
The Titans were followed in the 19-team event by
second-place University of Notre Dame (Ind.) with
123 points, third-place Hillsdale College (Mich.)
with 143 points, fourth-place University of
Cincinnati with 156 points and fifth-place
Valparaiso University (Ind.) with 202. The
University of Notre Dame and Valparaiso
University are both NCAA Division I schools,
while Hillsdale College is a member of the NCAA
Division II. UW-Oshkosh finished first in last
year's Gold Division of the Notre Dame
Invitational with 96 points.
UW-Oshkosh placed all seven of its runners in the
top-66 finishes. In addition to Woodworth, the Titans also had Kristy Giljohann
(Jr. • Brookfield) finish seventh in a time of 18:24, Emily Steinhafel (Jr.
• West Bend) 21st in 18:51, Jackie Munoz (Sr. • Oshkosh) 33rd in 19:01,
Beth Baird (Fr. • Waukesha) 60th in 19:23, Rosa Alvarez (Fr. • Watertown)
61st in 19:23 and Jenny Graef (So. • Lena) 66th in 19:27. A total of 154

 With seven of their teammates
competing at the Notre Dame Invitational earlier
in the day, the remaining members of the
UW-Oshkosh women's cross country team finished
third in the Junior Varsity Division of the
UW-Eau Claire Invitational held Friday (Oct. 1)
in Colfax. UW-La
Crosse, which owned five of the top six
individual finishers, snatched the team title
with 17 points. The Eagles were followed in the
12-team meet by second-place University of
Minnesota-Duluth with 51 points, third-place
UW-Oshkosh with 88 points, fourth-place St. Olaf
College (Minn.) with 106 points and fifth-place
Macalester College (Minn.) with 110.
UW-Oshkosh had three runners finish in the top
14 individual listings as Jessie Scheer (Fr. • De Pere) placed seventh in
a time of 24:51, Annette Pufall (Sr. • Ashland) ninth in 24:54 and Crystal
Cook (So. • Lena) 14th in 25:02. The Titans' scoring was completed by Lindsey
Mansueto's (Fr. • Mayville) 24th-place time of 25:18 and Toni Morning's
(Fr. • Colfax) 41st-place time of 25:36. UW-La Crosse's Erin Farley took
individual honors by completing the 6,000-meter course in a time of 24:32.
Other top performances for the Titans
were the 45th-place time of 25:37 by Jill Gloudemans (Fr. •
Little Chute), the 61st-place time of 26:07 by Hollie Vandenberg
(Fr. • Niagara) and the 71st-place time of 26:30 by Megan
Blackmon (Fr. • Schaumburg, Ill.). A total of 174 runners

At Midwest Collegiate Championship
 Liz Woodworth (Sr. • Marinette) ran to the
individual title for the second straight year as the UW-Oshkosh women's cross
country team finished third at the Midwest Collegiate Championship held Saturday
(Sept. 18) in Kenosha.
Woodworth, who won
the 5,000-meter race a year ago with a time of
17:28, completed the course this year in a time
of 17:37. Julie Nemergut of Edinboro University
(Pa.) finished second with a time of 17:49.
Edinboro
University, ranked eighth in the NCAA Division
II, took the team title with 41 points. NCAA
Division I Loyola University (Ill.) finished
second in the 20-team meet with 56 points, while
UW-Oshkosh placed third with 91, NCAA Division II
Wayne State University (Mich.) fourth with 104
and NCAA Division I UW-Milwaukee fifth with 115.
UW-Oshkosh entered the meet as the fourth-ranked
team in the NCAA Division III.
UW-Oshkosh placed all five of its scorers in the
top-35 individual finishes. In addition to Woodworth, the Titans also had Kristy
Giljohann (Jr. • Brookfield) finish 15th with a time of 18:49, Jackie Munoz
(Sr. • Oshkosh) 23rd in 19:16, Emily Steinhafel (Jr. • West Bend)
29th in 19:22 and Rosa Alvarez (Fr. • Watertown) 35th in 19:30.
Completing the list of top-100 finishers for UW-Oshkosh
were 36th-place Beth Baird (Fr. • Waukesha) in 19:35, 52nd-place Krystal

Lawrence University Invitational Title
 With several of its top runners in
the crowd as spectators, the UW-Oshkosh women's
cross country team still managed to capture a
first-place finish at the Lawrence University
Invitational held Saturday (Sept. 11) in
Sherwood. UW-Oshkosh
scored 38 points in its 2004 debut to easily
finish ahead of the 10 other teams in the meet.
St. Norbert College placed second with 64 points,
while Lawrence University listed third with 88
points and Ripon College fourth with 112.
UW-Oshkosh had three of the meet's top-six individual
finishers and six of the top 20. Rosa Alvarez (Fr. • Watertown) led UW-Oshkosh
by completing the 5,000-meter course at High Cliff State Park in a time of 19:51.
The Titans also had Beth Baird (Fr. • Waukesha) finish second in 19:53,
Jenny Graef (So. • Lena) sixth in 20:05, Jessie Scheer (Fr. • De Pere)
14th in 20:51, Annette Pufall (Sr. • Ashland) 19th in 21:01 and Lindsey
Mansueto (Fr. • Mayville) 20th in 21:02. Lawrence University alumnus Courtney
Miller won the race with a time of 19:34.
Rounding out the top-50 individual finishers for
UW-Oshkosh were 25th-place Jill Gloudemans (Fr. • Little Chute) in 21:22,
36th-place Whitney Langer (Fr. • New Richmond) in 21:46, 37th-place Crystal
Cook (So. • Lena) in 21:51 and 39th-place Toni Morning (Fr. • Colfax)
