Nov. 24, 2008

UW-Oshkosh closed out the 2008 cross country season with an 18th-place finish at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championship in Hanover, Ind.

We had the best one-two punch in the country with junior Ayla Mitchell finishing third and freshmen Christy Cazzola 37th. Ayla earned her second All America honor covering the 6,000-meter course in 21:02. Christy was the second freshmen in the meet, running a time of 21:46.

For seniors Jessie Scheer and Katie Wondra it was the final cross country meet of their career. To race at the NCAA Championship in your final race is a great accomplishment.

We were very excited with our second place team finish at the WIAC Championship! Two runners earned all-conference first team honors by placing in the top seven. Ayla Mitchell was second and Christy Cazzola was fourth. Christy was the top freshman in the meet. Earning all-conference second team was Katie Wondra. Katie placed 10th in the best race of her career moving up from 38 a year ago. Jessie Scheer placed 18th to earn all-conference honorable mention.

We are back in action on Saturday, Nov. 15, competing at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Cross Country in Rock Island, Ill. The top two teams advance on to the NCAA Division III Championship on Nov. 22 in Hanover, Ind. We want to be there!

At the UW-Oshkosh Open we rested our top 12 runners in preparation for the WIAC Championship this Saturday in Stevens Point. We had 10 women compete in the 5k race at Lake Breeze Golf Course.

The weather was awesome with little wind which made for some fast 5k times. Many of the runners had career PR's. Alie Graham broke 20 min. with a 19:59 which was a huge PR!

We are currently ranked 7th in the latest Div. III national poll and are excited about the upcoming conference championship.

We took advantage of the great weather and great competition on Saturday at our home meet at Lake Breeze Golf Course.

We placed 2nd with 123 points behind Calvin College which is ranked #1 in Div. III, but ahead of #15th ranked MN-Duluth in Div. II. We had a great 1-2 punch from Ayla and Christy. We were solid at positions 3-5 with Jessie, Katie and Jenny.

The top twelve from this meet will compete at the WIAC Conference Championships at Stevens Point on Nov. 1.

The rest of the team will race Friday at home at 2:35.

We did not race nine runners at the Ripon College Invite and placed third as a team with 78 points. This meet gave many of our younger runners an opportunity to score. I was very happy with the racing efforts of out top five. Brittany Haas led the way with a tenth place finish with a time of 21:20 over the rugged 5k course.

On Saturday (Oct. 18), UW-Oshkosh hosts the Brooks Invitational at Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winneconne. There will be approximately 30 teams competing from a 6 state area. Race time is 10:30 for men and 11:15 for women. We are excited for the race which will feature some of the top teams in Div. II and Div. III.

We were very excited with our team race at the Notre Dame Invitational.

There were 18 Division I teams and the second ranked team in Division II in the 23 team field. The Titans finished eleventh with 263 points. Ayla ran a superb race for the win in 17:28 which was 22 seconds faster than last year. Our team embraced the competition. Five of our runners had career bests! In 2007 our fifth runner was in 20:08 and this year in 19:22.

Next up is the Ripon College Invite on Saturday, Oct. 11. The race is at 11 a.m. We will be resting our top group.
