Farrington Finishes 18th At NCAA Championship

Markka FarringtonRecovering from a 31st-place standing after 36 holes, UW-Oshkosh senior Markka Farrington finished 18th at the 72-hole NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championship held Tuesday through Friday (May 14-17) at The Orchards Golf Club in South Hadley, Mass.

Farrington, who placed seventh at the event a year ago, compiled 18-hole rounds of 87, 94, 81 and 80, to finish 30 strokes (342-312) behind medalist Lynn Thompson of Thomas More College (Ky.). Rachele Miller of Mary Hardin-Baylor University (Texas) finished second with 319 strokes and Meghann Glass of Mount Union College (Ohio) third with 324.

Methodist College (N.C.) won its third straight NCAA Division III women's golf title, totaling a team score of 1,310 strokes. Mary Hardin-Baylor University finished second with 1,341, Amherst College (Mass.) third with 1,384, DePauw University (Ind.) fourth with 1,387 and Rhodes College (Tenn.) fifth with 1,400.

Twenty schools were represented at the 2002 NCAA Division III Championship, as 10 teams of five golfers and 10 individuals were selected to participate. These golfers were challenged through four rounds of play on a difficult 5,801-yard, par-72 course.

Farrington, a West Bend native, finished fourth or better in seven of the 10 meets that she participated in during the 2001-02 season. Among them were first-place finishes at the UW-Oshkosh Invitational held last September and the Lewis University Spring Classic held a little less than four weeks ago. Farrington also tied for third at the WIAC Championship held last October.

A four-year letter winner majoring in exercise fitness, Farrington is the only person to represent UW-Oshkosh in NCAA post-season competition. Farrington is also one of only two golfers in UW-Oshkosh history to receive All-WIAC first time honors four times, with her 2000 selection following a first-place finish at the league championship.

Farrington Named To All-America Second Team

Markka FarringtonMarkka Farrington received the first All-America accolade in the history of the UW-Oshkosh women's golf program when she gained second team mention on the National Golf Coaches Association's (NCGA) 2002 NCAA Division III honor squad.

Farrington was one of 10 golfers receiving All-America status for their performance during the 2001-02 season, including Player of the Year Lynn Thompson of Thomas More College (Ky.). Farrington, a honorable mention pick last season, was joined on the second team by Monica Blank of McMurry University (Texas), Alicia Golembeski of Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.), Kristi Moss of UW-Eau Claire and Hope Thomas of Methodist College (N.C.)

Led by Thompson, the All-America first team also included Meghann Glass of Mount Union College (Ohio), Jessie Hunter of Methodist College, Michelle Meadows of Methodist College and Rachele Miller of Mary Hardin-Baylor University (Texas).

Farrington Selected To Play In NCAA Championship

Markka FarringtonUW-Oshkosh senior Markka Farrington will participate at the Third Annual NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championship for the second consecutive year following her selection as one of 10 at-large selections.

The 72-hole event will be conducted May 14-17 at The Orchards Golf Club on the campus of Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Mass.

Two teams from each of the five NCAA Division III regions were selected for the championship. In addition, 10 individuals not from selected teams also qualified for the meet. Among the selected team entrants were UW-Eau Claire and two-time defending champion Methodist College (N.C.). Individual selections besides Farrington included Christy Huegerich of UW-Whitewater.

Last year, Farrington finished seventh at the NCAA Division III Championship to receive All-America honorable mention recognition. Farrington carded a 72-hole score of 306 (18 over par) strokes, with rounds of 75, 78, 74 and 79.

Battling Methodist College and UW-Eau Claire for the 2002 team championship will be Amherst College (Mass.), Buena Vista University (Iowa), DePauw University (Ind.), Illinois Wesleyan University, Mary Hardin-Baylor University (Texas), McMurry University (Texas), Rhodes College (Tenn.) and the University of St. Thomas (Minn.).

Titans Win Lewis Spring Classic By One Stroke

Markka FarringtonSenior Markka Farrington had the lowest 18-hole score both days to lead the UW-Oshkosh women's golf team to a first-place finish at the Lewis University Spring Classic held Saturday and Sunday (April 21-22) in Morris, Ill.

UW-Oshkosh claimed the team title with a score of 685, one stroke better than second-place and WIAC rival UW-Eau Claire. Illinois Wesleyan University finished third in the nine-team meet with a score of 687 and NCAA Division II Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville fourth with a count of 694.

Farrington took the individual championship with a score of 158, totaling 82 strokes on the first day and a four-over-par 76 on the second. Liz Schweihs of NCAA Division II and host Lewis University finished second with a score of 166.

Also finishing in the top 20 for UW-Oshkosh were sophomores Amy Simon, who finished 14th with a score of 172, and Carrie Detjen, who finished 20th with a score of 175. The Titans also received a score of 180 from sophomore Kristin Huth and a 198 from freshman Marcia Perry.

Titans Tie For Second At Hickory Point Invite

Carrie DetjenOwning three top-nine individual finishes, the UW-Oshkosh women's golf team tied for second at the Hickory Point Invitational held Saturday (April 13) in Forsyth, Ill.

Illinois Wesleyan University won the 18-hole tournament with a score of 323, while WIAC members UW-Oshkosh and UW-Eau Claire tied for second at 326. Host Millikin University (Ill.) finished fourth in the eight-team event with 328 strokes and Lewis University (Ill.) fifth with 343.

Donya Tetrault of Millikin University took individual medalist honors with a four-over-par 74, while UW-Eau Claire's Kristi Moss finished second with a 76.

Placing in the top nine for UW-Oshkosh were senior Markka Farrington, who finished seventh with a 79, sophomore Carrie Detjen, who finished eighth with an 81, and sophomore Kristin Huth, who finished ninth with an 82.

The other two UW-Oshkosh scores were an 84 by sophomore Amy Simon and a 99 by freshman Marcia Perry.

Titans Place Second In Lone Star State

Markka FarringtonCompeting in its first event since October, the UW-Oshkosh women's golf team finished second in a triangular hosted by the University of Texas-Dallas on Thursday (March 21) in Dallas, Texas.

Illinois Wesleyan University won the 18-hole meet with a score of 385, while UW-Oshkosh finished second with 428 and the University of Texas-Dallas third with 572. Due to poor weather conditions in Dallas prior to the meet, the course was extremely difficult to play for all participants.

UW-Oshkosh had four of its five golfers place in the top-nine finishes, with senior Markka Farrington leading the way. Farrington placed fourth with a score of 99, while sophomore Amy Simon finished seventh with 108, sophomore Carrie Detjen eighth with 110 and freshman Marcia Perry ninth with 111. Sophomore Kristin Huth finished 12th for the Titans in the 19-player field with a score of 115.

Gail Nelson of Illinois Wesleyan University took individual honors with a score of 90, while teammate Ann Martin finished second with a score of 93.

Titans Finish Third At WIAC Championship

Carrie DetjenMarkka FarringtonUW-Eau Claire won the WIAC Women's Golf Championship held Saturday and Sunday (October 6-7) at the Mill Run Golf Course in Eau Claire.

Senior Kristi Moss took medalist honors to lead the Blugolds to their second WIAC title in the six-year history of the 36-hole event. The Blugolds won the 1998 crown when it was played at the Westhaven Golf Course in Oshkosh. UW-Eau Claire has been the runner-up in the other four championships and Moss was the runner-up medalist in 2000.

As has been the norm in the history of WIAC Championship, the first-round leader has always won the title and the Blugolds expanded their four-stroke first-round lead into a 17-stroke victory over UW-Whitewater, the 1996 and 1999 winner.

All team scores were better for the final 18 holes on Sunday than they were for the first 18 holes on Saturday. UW-Eau Claire won the event with 682 strokes, while UW-Whitewater finished second with 699, UW-Oshkosh third with 710, UW-Stevens Point fourth with 752 and UW-Platteville fifth with 764. UW-Platteville was playing in the championship for the first time.

UW-Whitewater's Nicole Toeppe, the 1999 conference medalist, turned in the best card Sunday with a seven-over-par 80. That allowed her to tie for third with a 36-hole total of 168. Moss, who had the tournament's best round Saturday with a five-over-par 78, came back with an 81 Sunday to finish with a winning score of 159, eight strokes ahead of runner-up Andrea Miller of UW-Stevens Point who had rounds of 83 and 84.

Matching Moss with the second-best score Sunday was senior teammate Mo Montbriand who entered the tournament with a 93.62 average but turned in rounds of 89 and 81 to finish with a 170 total. For her effort, she earned all-conference honors as did all top eight finishers. That included the Blugolds' Jen Prock who tied for eighth with a 175 on rounds of 89 and 86.

Defending conference medalist and senior Markka Farrington of UW-Oshkosh tied for third place with a 168 with identical rounds of 84. Also earning all-conference honors for a third straight year was UW-Whitewater's Christy Huegerich who was second after the first round with an 81 but slipped to a 90 for a 171 total and sixth place. Teammate Lisa Irons was all-conference for a second year in a row with her seventh-place finish. The other all-conference winner was UW-Oshkosh sophomore Carrie Detjen who tied for eighth with rounds of 89 and 86.

Other UW-Oshkosh competitors at the WIAC Championship were sophomore Amy Simon (12th place with 184), freshman Katherine Lange (15th place with 188), sophomore Kristin Huth (15th place with 188), sophomore Stephan Mraz (19th place with 189) and freshman Marcia Perry (23rd place with 192).

Titans Rally To Win UW-Oshkosh Invitational

Markka FarringtonIn dramatic fashion, the UW-Oshkosh women's golf team rallied to win its own invitational held Saturday and Sunday (September 29-30) at the Whispering Springs Golf Course in Fond du Lac. The invitational title was the second in three days for the Titans, who also won the Carthage College Invitational on Friday (September 28) in Kansasville.

UW-Oshkosh had 353 strokes for a fourth-place standing after the first day of competition to trail first-place UW-Whitewater by 12 strokes. The Titans turned their fortune around on the second day by totaling a meet-low 340 strokes to win the 11-team event by one stroke, a 693-694 score over second-place UW-Whitewater. Millikin University finished third with 695 strokes, while UW-Eau Claire was fourth with 696 and Illinois Wesleyan University fifth with 707.

UW-Oshkosh senior Markka Farrington took individual honors with 160 strokes, including a meet-low 73 on the second day after shooting an 87 on the first. Farrington won the individual title by one stroke after finishing play with a birdie on the par-five, 18th hole. The birdie also enabled her team to claim the team championship by one stroke.

Contributing to UW-Oshkosh's winning score were 173 strokes by Amy Simon, 181 by Carrie Detjen, 183 by Kristin Huth and 189 by Stephani Mraz, all sophomores.

Titans Win Carthage College Invitational

Markka FarringtonLed by three players who recorded scores of 87 or better, the UW-Oshkosh women's golf team won the Carthage College Invitational held Friday (September 28) at the Brighton Dale Links in Kansasville.

UW-Oshkosh totaled 348 strokes in the 18-hole event to finish ahead of the 353 second-place counts of Illinois Wesleyan University and UW-Whitewater. UW-Eau Claire finished fourth in the field of nine teams with a score of 361, while Carthage College finished fifth with a score of 372.

Senior Markka Farrington paced UW-Oshkosh by finishing second with 82 strokes. The Titans also received a third-place total of 84 strokes by Amy Simon and an eighth-place total of 87 strokes by Carrie Detjen, both sophomores. Gail Nelson of Illinois Wesleyan University claimed the individual title with 79 strokes.

Other scores compiled by UW-Oshkosh golfers were a 95 by Stephanie Mraz and a 97 by Kristin Huth, both sophomores.

Titans Finish Seventh At Illinois Wesleyan Invitational

Markka FarringtonSenior Markka Farrington finished second individually to help the UW-Oshkosh women's golf team to a seventh-place finish at the Illinois Wesleyan University Invitational held Saturday and Sunday (September 22-23) at the Ironwood Country Club in Normal, Ill.

Farrington had 148 strokes in the 36-hole event to finish two behind the first-place count of Grinnell College's Hilary Minnick. Farrington carded 71 strokes on the first day of competition to establish an 18-hole personal best. Laura McKinney of Rhodes College finished third with 151 strokes.

Rhodes College won the team title, outdistancing second-place Quincy University in strokes, 629-636. DePauw University finished third with a score of 642. UW-Oshkosh totaled 654 strokes for its seventh-place finish, including a school-record 18-hole total of 323 on the first day.

UW-Oshkosh's team total was compiled with scores of 162 by Amy Simon, 172 by Carrie Detjen, 175 by Stephani Mraz and 177 by Kristin Huth, all sophomores.

Titans Finish Fifth At UW-Whitewater Invitational

Amy SimonThe UW-Oshkosh women's golf team finished fifth at the UW-Whitewater Invitational held Saturday (September 8) at the Riverside Golf Course in Janesville. The event was scheduled for an additional 18 holes on Sunday (September 9), but continuous rain forced the cancellation of play.

UW-Eau Claire finished first in the 14-team field with 330 strokes, marking the Blugolds' second invitational title in as many weekends. Millikin University finished second with 336 strokes, while Knox College and UW-Whitewater finished fourth with 342 and UW-Oshkosh fifth with 345.

Sophomore Amy Simon paced UW-Oshkosh by posting an 11th-place score of 84. The Titans also received scores of 85 from senior Markka Farrington, 87 from sophomore Carrie Detjen, 89 from sophomores Kristin Huth and Stephani Mraz and 90 from freshman Katherine Lange.

UW-Whitewater's Christy Huegerich took the individual honors by totaling 74 strokes, the best 18-hole round in school history. Donya Tetrault of Millikin University finished second with 78 strokes.

Titans Finish Fifth At UW-Eau Claire Invitational

Markka FarringtonSenior Markka Farrington compiled a team-low 168 strokes in leading UW-Oshkosh to a fifth-place finish at the UW-Eau Claire Women's Golf Invitational held Saturday and Sunday (September 1-2) at the Mill Run Golf Course in Eau Claire.

UW-Eau Claire won the 14-team event with 696 strokes, while the University of St. Thomas finished second with 700, UW-Whitewater third with 703, Simpson College fourth with 706 and UW-Oshkosh and Buena Vista University fifth with 713. UW-Eau Claire had trailed the University of St. Thomas by 12 strokes heading into Sunday's competition.

Farrington led UW-Oshkosh's efforts by carding 18-hole scores of 85 on Saturday and 83 on Sunday to place fourth individually. Lisa Irons of UW-Whitewater took medalist honors with a 163, while teammate Christy Huegerich finished second at 166.

Other UW-Oshkosh golfers placing in the top-50 were 18th-place Amy Simon (177), 28th-place Carrie Detjen and Stephani Mraz (184), 35th-place Katherine Lange (186) and 40th-place Marcia Perry (189). Lange and Perry are freshmen, while Detjen, Mraz and Simon are sophomores.
