Gaubatz Takes Over Women's Golf Program
Tim Gaubatz, who has served UW-Oshkosh as assistant
men's basketball coach for the past 11 years, has been named the
school's new head women's golf coach.
Gaubatz inherits
his women's golf coaching duties from Kris Schoonover, who built
the program from its infancy in 1996 into a national power. Schoonover
resigned from her position in June following the Titans' fifth-place
finish at the NCAA Division III Championship. She will remain at
UW-Oshkosh as assistant women's basketball coach and marketing director
for the athletics department.
"I'm thrilled
about the opportunity to be a part of this successful program,"
said Gaubatz. "We have a strong nucleus of players returning
who can help us get back to the NCAA Division III Championship."
UW-Oshkosh's effort
in returning to the NCAA Division III Championship will be aided
by the return of Brian Zinda as assistant coach. Zinda, a former
member of the UW-Oshkosh men's team, is the club professional at
Whispering Springs Golf Club in Fond du Lac, the home course for
the Titans. Gaubatz has also asked Schoonover, who was named the
2003 national co-coach of the year, to remain involved with the
program this season as a volunteer assistant coach.
"Kris and Brian
have a tremendous relationship with the ladies and I didn't want
to disrupt that," said Gaubatz. "It is also important
that we keep the staff together to help us repeat as conference
champion and improve our standing at nationals.
Gaubatz, an avid
golfer, joined the men's basketball coaching staff of head coach
Ted Van Dellen in 1993. Since then, the Titans have made five appearances
in the NCAA Division III Championship. This past year, UW-Oshkosh
fashioned a 25-7 record and advanced to the quarterfinal round of
the NCAA Division III Championship.
In addition to both
of his coaching duties, Gaubatz will also assist director of athletics
Allen Ackerman in the athletics department's fund-raising.
Gaubatz, 36, received
his bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1989 and
a master's degree from UW-Oshkosh in 1996. The Sheboygan native
and his wife, Tami, live in Oshkosh with their children, T.J., Tiana
and Taylor. |
Schoonover Named National
Co-Coach Of The Year
Voted earlier in May as the NCAA Division III Region
III Coach of the Year, UW-Oshkosh head women's golf coach Kris Schoonover
has been named by the National Golf Coaches Association (NCGA) as
the NCAA Division III National Co-Coach of the Year for the 2002-03
season. Schoonover, who also received the regional coaching accolade
following the 2000-01 season, shares the national honor with Michelle
Morgan of Amherst College (Mass.).
Schoonover led UW-Oshkosh
during the 2002-03 season to the WIAC championship and a fifth-place
finish in its inaugural appearance at the NCAA Division III Championship.
In addition, the Titans defeated 99 of the 110 opponents they faced,
with regular season titles at events hosted by UW-Whitewater on
Sept. 7-8, Knox College (Ill.) on Sept. 13, Carthage College on
Sept. 27 and UW-Oshkosh on Sept. 28-29.
Individually, Schoonover
coached five UW-Oshkosh athletes to post-season accolades during
the 2002-03 season, including Carrie Detjen (Jr. • Two Rivers)
who gained NCAA Division III All-America honorable mention and All-WIAC
first team mention. Other All-WIAC first team picks were Kristin
Huth (Jr. • Fond du Lac) and Amy Simon (Jr. • Kaukauna).
Schoonover has served
as UW-Oshkosh's head coach since 1996, the year it first began competition
as an intercollegiate sport. Prior to this season, Schoonover led
UW-Oshkosh to the 2000 WIAC championship and individual representation
at the 2001 and 2002 NCAA Division III Championships. She was chosen
WIAC Coach of the Year in 2000 and 2001 and tutored Markka Farrington
to NCAA Division III All-America second team mention in 2002.
Besides coaching
women's golf, Schoonover also serves UW-Oshkosh's department of
intercollegiate athletics in the capacity of assistant women's basketball
coach and marketing director. During her nine years as an assistant
women's basketball coach at UW-Oshkosh, Schoonover has helped the
Titans to one NCAA Division III championship, five WIAC titles and
a glossy 223-38 record.
A native of Eau Claire,
Schoonover received bachelor's degrees from UW-Eau Claire in marketing
in 1987 and education in 1990. In 2002, she received her master's
degree from UW-Oshkosh in educational leadership. Schoonover came
to UW-Oshkosh from New Richmond High School, where she coached the
girls' basketball team in 1993 and 1994. |

UW-Oshkosh, completing its seventh year of
sponsoring women's golf, was participating as a team entrant at the NCAA
Division III Championship for the first time in school history. The past
two years, UW-Oshkosh was represented in the individual competition by
Markka Farrington.
Titans Invited To Play At NCAA
Championship
UW-Oshkosh, the reigning
WIAC women's golf champion, was one of 10 teams receiving invitations
on Monday (May 5) to the four-day NCAA Division III Championship that
starts May 13 at the The Golf Courses of Lawsonia in Green Lake. The Midwest
Conference will serve as host of the event.
It's the first time in the
seven-year history of the UW-Oshkosh program that the Titans have qualified
as a team for the NCAA Division III Championship. Markka Farrington, who
completed her eligibility for the Titans a year ago, participated as an
individual competitor at the NCAA Division III Championship the past two
seasons.
The NCAA Division III Women's Golf Committee
selected 10 teams for the championship, two from each of the five regions.
In addition, 10 individuals not from selected teams also qualified for
the meet. The championship will consist of both team and individual competition
conducted concurrently. The tournament consists of 72 holes of play over
four days of competition. In the team competition, the low four scores
from each team for each day will count in the team's total score.
Joining UW-Oshkosh in the hunt for the team
title are DePauw University (Ind.), Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.),
Mary Hardin-Baylor University (Texas), McMurry University (Texas), Methodist
College (N.C.), St. Lawrence University (N.Y.), St. Mary's College (Ind.),
Simpson College (Iowa) and UW-Eau Claire. DePauw University, Mary Hardin-Baylor
University, McMurry University, Methodist College and UW-Eau Claire were
all invitees a year ago.
Individuals selected to participate in the
event were Theresa Ashorn of Texas Lutheran University, Emily Colenbrander
of Hope College (Mich.), Katie Glorvigen of the University of St. Thomas
(Minn.), Katie Gravel of Amherst College (Mass.), Jen Hudson of Rhodes
College (Tenn.), Diane Imburgia of Millikin University (Ill.), Lisa Irons
of UW-Whitewater, Gail Nelson of Illinois Wesleyan University, Kristy
Schaaf of Macalester College (Minn.) and Charla Speer of Franklin College
(Ind.).
Last year, Methodist College
claimed its third consecutive NCAA Division III title, winning by 31 strokes
over second-place Mary Hardin-Baylor University at the The Orchards Golf
Club in South Hadley, Mass.
UW-Oshkosh, ranked third in
the NCAA Division III, has defeated 94 of its 101 opponents this year.
In a season that runs from the fall through the spring, the Titans competed
in nine events, winning five and finishing lower than second only twice.
UW-Oshkosh's lineup for the
NCAA Division III Championship will likely consist of juniors Carrie Detjen
(Two Rivers), Kristin Huth (Fond du Lac) and Amy Simon (Kaukauna), sophomore
Marcia Perry (Green Bay) and freshman Cheryl Treadwell (Brookfield).
