Young Receives Fourth All-America Award

Jennifer YoungUW-Oshkosh's Jennifer Young (Sr. • Salem) has been named as a second team selection on the National Golf Coaches Association's (NGCA) 2007 NCAA Division III All-America Women's Golf Team.

The NGCA selected 14 players to this year's All-America squad, including Young who was voted to the second team for the fourth consecutive season. She is the only multiple All-America selection in the 11-year history of the UW-Oshkosh women's golf program.

Methodist College (N.C.), which captured the 2007 NCAA Division III title, had four All-America selections, including first team honorees Katie Dick, Heather Martin and Charlotte Williams. The Lady Monarchs also had Susan Martin selected to the second team.

Joining the Methodist College trio on the first team were Sarah Gates of DePauw University (Ind.) and Katie Tewell of Franklin College (Ind.).

Other second team selections were Marisa Mauldin of Southwestern University (Texas), Ali Murtaugh of DePauw University, Holly Noble of the University of St. Thomas (Minn.), Taylor Paskell of Illinois Wesleyan University, Meghan Sobotta of UW-Eau Claire and Rachel Roberg and Breanne Staples of Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.).

This past year, Young finished 12th at the NCAA Division III Championship held May 8-11 in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. She also won the UW-Oshkosh Invitational held April 20 and the UW-Stevens Point Invitational held April 21-22. Young finished second at the WIAC Championship held Oct. 7-8 and the UW-Oshkosh Invitational held Sept. 9-10.

Young was named 2006-07 WIAC Golfer of the Year after averaging 80.1 strokes per 18 holes. She shot in the 70s in 11 of her 21 rounds, including a season-best 75 at the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational held Sept. 17 and the last round of the NCAA Division III Championship.

Young was one of 10 golfers receiving NCAA Division III All-Central Region accolades by the NGCA and one of eight golfers voted to the All-WIAC first team during the 2006-07 season. Also named to the All-WIAC first team was UW-Oshkosh's Jessica Tiffe (Jr. • Brookfield).

In 2005-06, Young finished 15th at the NCAA Division III Championship held in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. She averaged 80.3 strokes per round and captured second-place finishes at the Augustana College Invitational held Sept. 1, Carthage College Invitational held Sept. 23 and the UW-Whitewater Invitational held Sept. 24-25. Young also placed sixth at the WIAC Championship held Oct. 1-2.

In 2004-05, Young placed 18th at the NCAA Division III Championship held in Southern Pines, N.C. She averaged 80.4 strokes per round and captured the individual title at the Hickory Point Invitational held April 22-23.

In 2003-04, Young finished 36th at the NCAA Division III Championship held in Green Lake to help UW-Oshkosh to a fourth-place ranking. She averaged 82.3 strokes per round and claimed the individual title at the Carthage College Invitational to earn WIAC Golfer of the Year honors.

Young Finishes 12th At NCAA Championship

Jennifer YoungUW-Oshkosh’s Jennifer Young (Sr. • Salem) finished 12th out of 111 participants at the NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championship held Tuesday (May 8) through Friday (May 11) at El Campeon Golf Course in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.

Young took 322 shots, 30 over par, during the 72-hole tournament. She posted 18-hole scores of 78, 87, 82 and 75. Young finished 15th at the NCAA Division III Championship in 2006, 18th in 2005 and 36th in 2004.

Katie Dick of Methodist College (N.C.) claimed the individual title with 296 shots, 4 over par. Dick compiled 18-hole scores of 76, 73, 72 and 75. Two-time defending champion Charlotte Williams, also of Methodist College, finished second with 303 shots. She compiled 18-hole scores of 74, 81, 73 and 75.

Rounding out the top-five individual finishers were third-place Katie Tewell of Franklin College (Ind.) with 305 strokes, fourth-place Heather Martin of Methodist College with 306 and fifth-place Kimbra Kosak of Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) and Emily Ranney of Methodist College with 314.

Methodist College led from start to finish to win its eighth straight NCAA Division III team title. The Monarchs took 1,215 shots, 47 over par, after registering 18-hole scores of 303, 309, 303 and 300. DePauw University (Ind.) finished second with 1,303 strokes, while Gustavus Adolphus College placed third with 1,318, Southwestern University (Texas) fourth with 1,322 and the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) fifth with 1,325.

Young To Play In NCAA Championship

Jennifer YoungUW-Oshkosh’s Jennifer Young (Sr. • Salem) has received an invitation to play in the 2007 NCAA Division III Women’s Golf Championship. The 72-hole tournament will be held Tuesday (May 8) through Friday (May 11) at El Campeon Golf Course in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.

This year’s championship will consist of both team and individual competition. The NCAA picked 20 teams and 11 individuals, not from selected teams, to participate in the event.

Young is making her fourth NCAA Division III Championship appearance after finishing 15th in 2006, 18th in 2005 and 36th in 2004. She is a three-time NCAA Division III All-America second team selection.

This season, Young has averaged 80.05 strokes for her 17 18-hole rounds. She won the UW-Oshkosh Invitational held April 20 and the UW-Stevens Point Invitational held April 21-22. Young finished second at the WIAC Championship held Oct. 7-8 and the UW-Oshkosh Invitational held Sept. 9-10.

In addition to Young, other individual selections for this year's championship were Susie Lewis and Jessica Urban of UW-Stevens Point, Julia Gates Oglethorpe University (Ga.), Karla Leon of Macalester College (Minn.), Kristi Martin of Hardin-Simmons University (Texas), Andrea Schiltz of Wartburg College (Iowa), Jennifer Stork of Buena Vista University (Iowa), Katie Tewell of Franklin College (Ind.), Kassie Wells of Carleton College (Minn.) and Leslie Wheeler of Linfield College (Ore.).

Selected for the team competition were Allegheny College (Pa.), Amherst College (Mass.), DePauw University (Ind.), Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.), Illinois College, Illinois Wesleyan University, Manchester College (Ind.), seven-time defending champion Methodist College (N.C.), Middlebury College (Vt.), Ohio Northern University, Olivet College (Mich.), Simpson College (Iowa), Southwestern University (Texas), Texas Lutheran University, University of California-Santa Cruz, University of Puget Sound (Wash.), University of St. Thomas (Minn.), UW-Eau Claire, Vassar College (N.Y.) and Williams College (Mass.).

UW-Oshkosh finished fourth in the team standings at the 2004 NCAA Division III Championship and fifth in 2003.

Titans Finish 10th At Illinois Wesleyan University Spring Fling

Megan SchergJennifer YoungThe UW-Oshkosh women's golf team captured 10th place out of 15 teams at the Illinois Wesleyan University Spring Fling held Saturday (April 14) and Sunday (April 15) at the Ironwood Country Club in Normal, Ill.

Lindsey Wilson College (Ky.) totaled 646 strokes, 74 over par, during the 36-hole tournament to take first place. UW-Stevens Point finished second with 654 strokes, while UW-Eau Claire placed third with 662, Illinois Wesleyan University fourth with 664 and William Woods University (Mo.) fifth with 676.

Finishing off the top-10 teams were sixth-place St. Ambrose University (Iowa) with 677 strokes, seventh-place Illinois Wesleyan University "B" with 678, eighth-place Olivet College (Mich.) with 681, ninth-place Robert Morris College (Ill.) with 682 and 10th-place UW-Oshkosh with 694.

Jennifer Young (Sr. • Salem) led all UW-Oshkosh golfers with a seventh-place finish. Young recorded 163 strokes, 20 over par, after posting 18-hole rounds of 82 and 81.

The Titans also had Megan Scherg (So. • Kimberly) finish 31st with 170 strokes, Liz Buske (Jr. • Stoughton) 55th with 180 and Danielle Vanderhill (Fr. • Wind Lake) 63rd with 185. Jessica Tiffe (Jr. • Brookfield) withdrew after totaling 91 strokes on the first 18 holes.

Krista Burton of Lindsey Wilson College took 151 strokes, eight over par, to claim individual honors. Susie Lewis of UW-Stevens Point finished second with 155 strokes, while Lindsey Haines of Illinois Wesleyan University "B", Jessica Urban of UW-Stevens Point and Jessica Thompson of UW-Eau Claire shared third place with 159.

A total of 92 golfers competed in the tournament.

Young, Titans Finish Second At WIAC Championship

Jennifer Young (Sr. • Salem) was the individual runner-up as the UW-Oshkosh women’s golf team finished second at the WIAC Championship held Saturday (Oct. 7) and Sunday (Oct. 8) at Windwood of Watertown.

UW-Eau Claire totaled 660 strokes, 84 over par, to capture its third straight WIAC title and fifth overall. The Blugolds also earned the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship with the victory. The NCAA Division III Championship will be held May 8-11, 2007 at El Campeon Golf Course in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.

UW-Oshkosh finished second in the 36-hole WIAC Championship with 668 strokes, 92 over par. The Titans, who shared second place with UW-Whitewater a year ago, totaled 332 strokes on Saturday and a tournament-low 336 strokes on Sunday.

UW-Whitewater placed third with 674 strokes, while UW-Stevens Point ranked fourth with 686, UW-Superior fifth with 751, UW-Stout sixth with 753, UW-Platteville seventh with 800 and UW-River Falls eighth with 816.

UW-Eau Claire's Torie Ives won the top individual award after defeating UW-Oshkosh’s Young in a sudden death playoff. Both players launched 158 shots, 14 over par, during regulation play to tie for first place. Young forced the extra session by outscoring Ives, 79-85, in the second round.

Stephanie Campbell of UW-Whitewater finished third among the 48 golfers with 159 strokes, while Jessica Thompson of UW-Eau Claire placed fourth with 163 and Meghan Sobotta of UW-Eau Claire fifth with 166.

The top 10 also featured UW-Whitewater’s Kendall Egnarski finishing sixth with 167 strokes, UW-Stevens Point’s Susie Lewis seventh with 168, UW-Oshkosh’s Megan Scherg (So. • Kimberly) eighth with 169, UW-Oshkosh’s Liz Buske (Jr. • Stoughton) ninth with 170 and UW-Oshkosh’s Jessica Tiffe (Jr. • Brookfield) 10th with 171.

Other UW-Oshkosh competitors at the meet were Danielle Vanderhill (Fr. • Wind Lake) and Emily Wichman (Fr. • Appleton). Vanderhill placed 25th with 184 strokes and Wichman 37th with 197.

UW-Stevens Point’s Matt Interbartolo was named WIAC Coach of the Year at the championship, while UW-Whitewater's Egnarski received the league’s Judy Kruckman Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award.

UW-Oshkosh resumes its 2006-07 season in April, with the highlight hopefully being an appearance at the NCAA Division III Championship.

Titans To Compete At WIAC Championship

Cheryl TreadwellMore than the already prestigious conference championship trophy will be at stake when the eight women's golf teams gather for the 11th edition of the WIAC Championship on Saturday (Oct. 7) and Sunday (Oct. 8) Oct. 7-8 in Watertown.

Not only will the league crown be on the line, but an automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Championship. For the first time ever, the league will determine its automatic qualifier into the national tournament at the conference meet. Previously, the league had to qualify for the NCAA Championship from a pool of at-large teams.

The national meet will be held May 8-11, 2007 at El Campeon Golf Course in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.

UW-Eau Claire will look to become the first school in league history to win three consecutive women's golf titles. The Blugolds have won four crowns overall with additional victories in 1998 and 2001. In 2006, UW-Eau Claire has won the UW-Stevens Point Invitational and added second-place finishes at two additional events.

Junior Meghan Sobotta and senior Jessica Thompson lead the charge for the Blugolds. Sobotta has posted back-to-back third-place finishes at the conference meet and captured All-WIAC first team recognition the last two years.
She also claimed National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) All-America second team status in 2005. This fall, she claimed medalist honors at the UW-Eau Claire Invitational.

Thompson was a NGCA All-Region selection a year ago and has claimed All-WIAC first team status the last two seasons. She finished third at last year's league championship after placing fifth in 2004.

UW-Oshkosh finished second a year ago and is the last team to win back-to-back conference titles after claiming 2002 and 2003 championships. The Titans have finished fourth or better in four of their five competitions this fall. The Titans are led by senior Jennifer Young who has secured NGCA All-America second team recognition the last three years. She finished sixth at last year's WIAC Championship and second during the 2004 meet.

UW-Stevens Point has finished fourth at the conference championships three consecutive seasons. The Pointers made school history this year when they won the nine-team UW-Oshkosh Invitational. It marked the largest multi-school tournament victory in the program's 11-year history. Senior Susie Lewis also captured medalist honors at the UW-Oshkosh Invitational to become the first Pointer to win an individual tournament title. She also was the top finisher at the Elmhurst College (Ill.) Invitational. Lewis earned NGCA All-Region honors a year ago and All-WIAC first team recognition two straight seasons.

UW-Whitewater registered a second-place finish in 2005, which marked the best finish for the program since a second-place standing in 2001. The Warhawks had a season-best third-place finish at the UW-Oshkosh Invitational and are led by sophomore Diana Schmidt. Schmidt was an All-WIAC second team choice a year ago. UW-Whitewater also looks for a low score from freshman Chelsea Davis, who shot back-to-back rounds of 79 at the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational.

UW-Platteville will attempt to better last year's sixth-place finish. The Pioneers are led by sophomore Michelle Ebert.
UW-River Falls posted a third-place finish in 2004 for its highest WIAC ranking. The Falcons recorded a season-best fourth-place finish at the UW-Oshkosh Invitational. The Falcons are led by junior Jenna Gutzwiller.

UW-Stout is a team entry in the WIAC Championship for the first time in school history. Kris Schoonover, who directed UW-Oshkosh to conference titles in 2000, 2002 and 2003, is in her first season as head coach of the Blue Devils. UW-Stout should receive low rounds from sophomore Molly Loney.

UW-Superior will look to improve on seventh-place finishes each of the last three seasons. The Yellowjackets recorded a season-best second-place standing at the Carroll College Invitational and are led by junior Kimberly Store.

Titans Take Fourth Place At Illinois Wesleyan University Invitational

Jessica TiffeJennifer YoungThe UW-Oshkosh women's golf team tied for fourth place at the Illinois Wesleyan University Invitational held Saturday (Sept. 16) and Sunday (Sept. 17) at the Ironwood Country Club in Normal, Ill.

DePauw University (Ind.) totaled 632 strokes, 56 over par, during the 36-hole tournament to successfully defend its team title. UW-Eau Claire finished second among the 23 teams with 633 strokes, Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville third with 641 and Illinois Wesleyan University and UW-Oshkosh fourth with 649.

Finishing off the top-10 teams were sixth-place Southwestern University (Texas) with 651 strokes, seventh-place UW-Stevens Point with 654, eighth-place Rend Lake Community College (Ill.) with 659, ninth-place University of Southern Indiana with 660 and 10th-place UW-Whitewater with 665.

Jennifer Young (Sr. • Salem) led all UW-Oshkosh golfers with a 12th-place finish. Young recorded 158 strokes, 14 over par, after posting 18-hole rounds of 83 and 75.

The Titans also had Jessica Tiffe (Jr. • Brookfield) finish 23rd with 162 strokes, Megan Scherg (So. • Kimberly) 25th with 163 and Liz Buske (Jr. • Stoughton) 34th with 166.

Katie Tewell of Franklin College (Ind.) took 148 strokes, four under par, to repeat as the tournament’s individual champion. Sarah Gates of DePauw University finished second with 149 strokes, while Angela Dehning of Rend Lake Community College, Olivia Fox of Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville and Torie Ives of UW-Eau Claire shared third place with 155.

A total of 136 golfers competed in the tournament.

Host Titans Finish Second In Nine-Team Invitational

Megan SchergJennifer YoungMegan Scherg (So. • Kimberly) and Jennifer Young (Sr. • Salem) tied for second place in the individual competition as the UW-Oshkosh women’s golf team finished second in its own invitational held Saturday (Sept. 9) and Sunday (Sept. 10) at the Eagle Creek Golf Club in Hortonville.

UW-Stevens Point took first place in the nine-team tournament with 695 strokes, 111 over par, while UW-Oshkosh finished second with 698, 114 over par. UW-Oshkosh was the tournament’s defending champion.

Rounding out the top-five teams were third-place UW-Whitewater with 711 strokes, fourth-place UW-River Falls with 801 and fifth-place UW-Superior with 804.

UW-Stevens Point’s Susie Lewis fired 158 shots, 12 over par, to claim the top individual award. Scherg and Young totaled 168 shots, 22 over par, for their second-place listing. Ripon College’s Gina Heckl finished fourth among the 48 golfers with 172 strokes, while UW-Stevens Point’s Sarah Mosher placed fifth with 173.

UW-Oshkosh also had Jessica Tiffe (Jr. • Brookfield) finish ninth with 179 strokes, Liz Buske (Jr. • Stoughton) 14th with 183 and Emily Wichman (Fr. • Appleton) 16th with 185.

Titans Finish Fourth In Season Debut

Jessica TiffeJennifer YoungThe UW-Oshkosh women’s golf team opened its 2006-07 season with a fourth-place finish at the UW-Eau Claire Invitational held Saturday (Sept. 2) and Sunday (Sept. 3) in Eau Claire.

UW-Oshkosh took 660 shots, 80 over par, in the 36-hole tournament. The Titans counted 334 strokes at the Mill Run Golf Course on Saturday and 326 at the Wild Ridge Golf Course on Sunday.

Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.), which finished second at last year’s NCAA Division III Championship, captured this year’s UW-Eau Claire Invitational title with 623 strokes, 43 over par. UW-Eau Claire placed second in the 20-team event with 652 strokes and the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) third with 653.

Rounding out the top-10 teams were fifth-place Wartburg College (Iowa) with 662 strokes, sixth-place UW-Stevens Point with 664, seventh-place Loras College (Iowa) with 682, eighth-place Central College (Iowa) with 685, ninth-place Buena Vista University (Iowa) with 686 and 10th-place UW-Whitewater with 699.

UW-Oshkosh’s highest individual finish came from Jessica Tiffe (Jr. • Brookfield). Tiffe totaled 161 shots, 16 over par, to share seventh place with four other golfers.

Gustavus Adolphus College had four of the top-five golfers, including Rachel Roberg who launched 152 shots, seven over par, to share first place with UW-Eau Claire’s Meghan Sobotta. The Gusties also had Kimbra Kosak finish third with 156 shots, Kali Griggs fourth with 157 and Breanne Staples fifth with 158.

In addition to Tiffe, UW-Oshkosh had Jennifer Young (Sr. • Salem) place 14th with 163 strokes, Megan Scherg (So. • Kimberly) 21st with 165, Liz Buske (Jr. • Stoughton) 32nd with 173 and Danielle Vanderhill (Fr. • Wind Lake) 48th with 176.

The tournament featured 117 golfers.
