Williams Earns Three All-America Awards
At NCGA Championship

Jennifer WilliamsJunior Jennifer Williams of the UW-Oshkosh women's gymnastics team earned All-America honors in the all-around, balance beam and uneven bars competition at the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) Championship held Friday and Saturday (March 22-23) in Ithaca, N.Y.

Williams placed second on the uneven bars with a score of 18.825, fourth on the balance beam with a score of 19.275 and 10th in the all-around competition with a score of 36.675. Williams was second on the uneven bars with a score of 9.425 and seventh on the balance beam with a count of 9.60 after the preliminaries. The top six finishers in each individual event and the top 10 finishers in the all-around competition earn All-America accolades.

Freshman Amanda Parker of Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) claimed a pair of national titles, winning the all-around competition with a score of 37.70 and the vault with a tally of 19.15. Other national championships went to senior Jumaah Johnson of Ursinus College (Pa.) in the floor exercise with a score of 19.20, sophomore Danin Squires of State University of New York-Cortland on the balance beam with a score of 19.50 and sophomore Melissa Stanton of Hamline University (Minn.) on the uneven bars with a score of 19.05.

Also competing at the NCGA Championship was UW-Oshkosh sophomore Wendy Wiederholt. Wiederholt was unable to qualify for the finals on the balance beam after compiling a score of 9.225 in the preliminaries.

In the team portion of the NCGA Championship, UW-La Crosse compiled a score of 184.875 to successfully defend its title. The Eagles won their sixth team championship, including their fourth since 1995. UW-La Crosse was followed by second-place State University of New York-Cortland at 183.175, third-place Gustavus Adolphus College at 182.55, fourth-place Ursinus College at 182.525, fifth-place Ithaca College (N.Y.) at 181.725, sixth-place Springfield College (Mass.) at 180.075, seventh-place Hamline University at 176.10 and eighth-place UW-River Falls at 172.67.

Eduardo Oville of Massachusetts Institute of Technology was named 2002 NCGA Coach of the Year, while Ellen Roscher of Gustavus Adolphus College was named the 2002 NCGA Outstanding Senior Athlete. UW-Oshkosh senior Lisa VanDerJagt was one of 34 members on the 2002 NCGA All-Academic Team.

Wiederholt, Williams Qualify For NCGA Championship

Wendy WiederholtJennifer WilliamsJunior Jennifer Williams and sophomore Wendy Wiederholt advanced to the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) Championship following their performances at the NCGA West Regional held Friday (March 8) in St. Peter, Minn.

The NCGA Championship will be held March 22-23 in Ithaca, N.Y., with Williams entered in the all-around competition and Wiederholt on the balance beam. While their seasonal average is valued at 60 percent of the qualifying score for the NCGA Championship, Williams did finish fifth in the all-around competition at the NCGA West Regional with a score of 36.35 and Wiederholt eighth on the balance beam with a count of 9.25. Williams won the balance beam event with a score of 9.675.

Host Gustavus Adolphus College won the NCGA West Regional with a score of 180.60, while defending NCGA national champion UW-La Crosse placed second with a mark of 180.175. The eight-team meet was rounded out by third-place Hamline University at 177.60, fourth-place UW-River Falls at 176.325, fifth-place UW-Oshkosh at 175.90, sixth-place UW-Whitewater at 175.275, seventh-place UW-Eau Claire at 174.25 and eighth-place UW-Stout at 170.55. Qualifying as team entrants for the NCGA Championship were Gustavus Adolphus College, UW-La Crosse, Hamline University and UW-River Falls.

In addition to Williams winning the balance beam at the NCGA West Regional, other individual champions were Gustavus Adolphus College freshman Amanda Parker in the all-around competition (37.325) and on the vault (9.475), Hamline University freshman Melissa Stanton on the uneven bars (9.375) and UW-La Crosse junior Leslie Stewart in the floor exercise (9.50).

Warhawks Trim Titans In Home Finale

Kristine ArquetteThe UW-Oshkosh women's gymnastics team surpassed a score of 172 for the sixth consecutive meet, but it wasn't enough as the Titans dropped a 173.775-172.40 decision to UW-Whitewater on Friday (March 1) in Kolf Sports Center.

While UW-Oshkosh outscored UW-Whitewater on the balance beam, 43.65-42.50, and in the floor exercise, 44.95-44.90, the Warhawks won the dual meet with the aid of higher scores on the uneven bars, 41.65-41.05, and on the vault, 44.725-42.75.

Senior Kristine Arquette and junior Jennifer Williams led UW-Oshkosh, with Arquette finishing second in the floor exercise with a score of 9.30, second on the vault with a score of 9.00, third in the all-around competition with a score of 35.15 and fourth on the uneven bars with a score of 8.40. Williams added a first-place finish on the uneven bars with a score of 8.85 and a second-place finish on the balance beam with a score of 9.05.

The Titans also received third-place finishes from junior Melissa Cummins on the balance beam with a score of 8.95 and senior Lisa VanDerJagt in the floor exercise with a score of 9.15.

Williams Claims A Pair Of WIAC Titles

Melissa CumminsJennifer WilliamsJunior Jennifer Williams won the all-around and uneven bars titles and shared top honors on the balance beam as the UW-Oshkosh women's gymnastics team finished fifth at the WIAC Championship held Friday (February 22) in River Falls.

UW-La Crosse scored 179.075 points to win its sixth consecutive WIAC title, while UW-River Falls finished second in the six-team event with count of 175.95. The team scoring was completed by third-place UW-Eau Claire at 174.30, fourth-place UW-Whitewater at 173.925, fifth-place UW-Oshkosh at 173.90 and sixth-place UW-Stout at 166.90. The Titans' 173.90 score, included a season-best 45.00 on the vault.

Williams totaled a score of 36.50 in the all-around competition to edge the second-place mark of 36.10 by UW-La Crosse senior Jenny Moore. Williams' first-place score of 9.10 on the uneven bars placed her ahead of the second-place tally of 8.90 by UW-La Crosse senior Anna Thatcher. In winning the balance beam, Williams compiled a score of 9.20 to share first-place accolades with UW-Eau Claire junior Erin Henrich, UW-Whitewater senior Lisa McManus and UW-River Falls sophomore Katie Mitchell. Williams also totaled a third-place score of 9.30 in the floor exercise.

UW-Oshkosh junior Melissa Cummins also recorded a top-six finish at this year's league championship, sharing fifth-place honors on the balance beam with UW-La Crosse sophomore Angela Erato by compiling a score of 9.15.

Wendy DeMore of UW-Whitewater was named the 2002 WIAC Coach of the Year, while Moore and UW-Oshkosh senior Kristine Arquette were named 2002 WIAC Co-Scholar-Athletes of the Year.

Gusties Edge Titans

Kristine ArquetteTightly contested in each of the four events, the Gustavus Adolphus College women's gymnastics team escaped with a 178.175-176.675 victory over UW-Oshkosh on Friday (February 15) in St. Peter, Minn. UW-Oshkosh's team score was its highest of the season, surpassing a 176.45 count against Centenary College and Southeast Missouri State University on January 26.

Gustavus Adolphus College edged UW-Oshkosh on the vault, 45.50-43.85, uneven bars, 42.225-42.00 and in the floor exercise, 45.65-44.975, while the Titans returned the favor by trimming the Gusties on the balance beam, 45.85-44.80.

UW-Oshkosh senior Kristine Arquette had her best meet of the season, finishing third in the all-around competition with a score of 35.825. Arquette's performance was highlighted by a second-place score of 9.20 on the balance beam and a third-place score of 8.65 on the uneven bars. Junior Jennifer Williams of UW-Oshkosh placed third in the all-around competition with a score of 35.45, including a second-place mark of 8.85 on the uneven bars.

Winning individual events were junior Melissa Cummins of UW-Oshkosh on the balance beam (9.40), freshman Amanda Parker of Gustavus Adolphus College on the uneven bars (8.975) and vault (9.40) and freshman Allison Legler of Gustavus Adolphus College in the floor exercise (9.375).

Titans Finish Second At UW-River Falls Quadrangular

Kristine ArquetteJennifer WilliamsJunior Jennifer Williams won the all-around competition while senior Kristine Arquette placed third as the UW-Oshkosh women's gymnastics team finished second in a quadrangular held Friday (February 8) in River Falls.

UW-La Crosse won the meet with a score of 177.80, while UW-Oshkosh finished second with 172.55, host UW-River Falls third with 171.00 and UW-Stout fourth with 170.30. En route to their third-highest score of the year, the Titans compiled a season-best 44.24 on the balance beam.

Williams took the all-around title with a score of 36.50, totaling a first-place score of 9.50 in the floor exercise, a second-place score of 9.50 on the balance beam, a third-place score of 8.825 on the uneven bars and a 13th-place score of 8.675 on the vault.

Arquette compiled her 35.50 all-around mark by counting a fourth-place score of 9.275 on the balance beam, a fifth-place score of 9.225 in the floor exercise, a seventh-place score of 8.90 on the vault and a 12th-place score of 8.10 on the uneven bars.

Other event winners were sophomore Angela Erato of UW-La Crosse on the balance beam (9.60), junior Michelle Saxton of UW-La Crosse on the uneven bars (8.925) and junior Tiffany Reber of UW-River Falls on the vault with a score of 9.30.

Titans Place Sixth At Gershon/McLellan Invitational

Kristine ArquetteJennifer WilliamsTotaling its second-best score of the season, the UW-Oshkosh women's gymnastics team finished sixth at the Gershon/McLellan Invitational held Friday (February 1) in La Crosse.

NCAA Division I Centenary College won the eight-team meet with a score of 184.75, while UW-La Crosse finished second at 180.55 and NCAA Division II Winona State University third at 180.175. UW-Oshkosh had a score of 173.325 for its sixth-place finish, including a season-best 45.675 in the floor exercise.

UW-Oshkosh was led by junior Jennifer Williams, who finished third in the all-around competition with a score of 36.45. She also placed fourth on the balance beam with a score of 9.225, sixth in the floor exercise with a season-best score of 9.525 and seventh on the uneven bars with a score of 9.10.

Senior Kristine Arquette also had a good meet for the Titans, placing ninth in the all-around competition with a season-best score of 35.375. Her efforts included a 12th-place finish on the vault with a season-best score of 9.075.

Junior Tasha Rogers of Centenary College won the all-around competition with a score of 37.50 while also placing first on the uneven bars with a count of 9.676. Other event winners were sophomore Angela Erato of UW-La Crosse on the balance beam (9.45), sophomore Becky Johnson of Winona State University on the vault (9.575) and freshman Tara Mitchell of Centenary College in the floor exercise (9.70).

NCAA Division I Foes Outdistance Titans

Wendy WiederholtSoutheast Missouri State University and Centenary College proved to be to strong for the UW-Oshkosh women's gymnastics team as the Titans finished third in a triangular involving the two NCAA Division I opponents on Saturday (January 26) in Cape Girardeau, Mo.

Southeast Missouri State University scored a season-high 190.875 to win the meet, claiming first in every team event and having a share of all four individual event victors. Centenary College finished second with a score of 188.15 and UW-Oshkosh third with a season-best 176.45.

UW-Oshkosh's best individual finish came on the balance beam, where sophomore Wendy Wiederholt placed fourth with a score of 9.45. Junior Jennifer Williams added a sixth-place finish on the uneven bars with a score of 9.525 while finishing seventh on the balance beam and in the floor exercise with tallies of 9.30 and 9.475, respectively. Williams' four-event score of 37.40 placed her fifth in the all-around competition.

Winning events for Southeast Missouri State University were sophomore Ashley Godwin on the vault (9.675), uneven bars (9.775) and in the floor exercise (9.725) and senior Karen Hamilton on the balance beam (9.725). Junior Tasha Rodgers of Centenary College tied with Godwin for the vault title, while freshman Jennifer Jackson of the Ladies won the all-around crown with a score of 38.325.

Titans Place Sixth At UW-Eau Claire Invitational

Melissa CumminsJennifer WilliamsThe UW-Oshkosh women's gymnastics team finished sixth out of six teams at the UW-Eau Claire Invitational held Friday (January 18) in Eau Claire.

Hamline University won the meet with a score of 173.10, while NCAA Division II Winona State University finished second with a count of 172.80. The team standings were rounded out by third-place UW-Whitewater at 170.65, fourth-place UW-River Falls at 170.575, fifth-place UW-Eau Claire at 166.525 and sixth-place UW-Oshkosh at 163.75.

Freshman Melissa Stanton of Hamline University dominated the individual efforts by winning the all-around competition and placing first in the balance beam, floor exercise and uneven bars. Stanton had an all-around score of 36.875 and marks of 9.275 on the balance beam, 9.25 in the floor exercise and 9.30 on the uneven bars. Junior Tiffany Reber of UW-River Falls was the only other event winner, finishing first on the vault with a score of 9.275.

Leading UW-Oshkosh was junior Jennifer Williams, who placed third in the all-around competition with a score of 35.575. She also placed second on the balance beam with a score of 9.175, fourth on the uneven bars with a score of 8.70 and fifth in the floor exercise with a score of 9.10. The Titans also received a pair of top-10 finishes from junior Melissa Cummins, who placed eighth in the floor exercise with a score of 8.975 and 10th on the balance beam with a score of 8.70. Contributing a 10th-place finish on the vault with a score of 8.925 was UW-Oshkosh freshman Renee Porter.

Defending WIAC Champion Ousts Titans

Jennifer WiliamsFive-time defending WIAC champion UW-La Crosse swept the top-two places in three of the four events to defeat UW-Oshkosh, 173.775-163.10, on Wednesday (January 9) in Kolf Sports Center. The Titans became the 41st straight victim of the Eagles, who haven't lost since the 2000 National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) Championship.

Junior Jennifer Williams led UW-Oshkosh by winning the all-around title with a score of 35.675 and the balance beam with a mark of 9.15. UW-La Crosse claimed first-place finishes in three events as junior Jordann Ojanpa won the vault with a score of 9.075, sophomore Nancy Petersen the floor exercise with a mark of 9.30 and junior Jaime Randall the uneven bars with a rating of 8.90. Injuries prevented senior Kristine Arquette and sophomore Wendy Wiederholt, two of UW-Oshkosh's top-four all-around performers, from competing in the meet.

In addition to Williams, who also placed third in both the floor exercise (9.10) and uneven bars (8.75) and fifth in the vault (8.675), the Titans received a third-place finish in the all-around (32.60) and a fourth-place finish in the uneven bars (8.50) from freshman Heather Downs. Junior Melissa Cummins added a third-place finish for UW-Oshkosh in the floor exercise (9.10).

Titans Finish Second In Season Opener

Jennifer WiliamsJunior Jennifer Williams won a pair of events and finished second in the all-around competition as the UW-Oshkosh women's gymnastics team placed second in a triangular with Hamline University and UW-Stout on Friday (December 7) in Kolf Sports Center. The Titans totaled a score of 165.35 in its season debut to finish behind the 169.125 tally of Hamline University. UW-Stout finished third with a score of 157.225.

Williams won the balance beam with a score of 9.00 and the floor exercise with a score of 9.15. She also finished second in the all-round competition with a score of 34.65, fifth on the uneven bars with a score of 8.35 and sixth on the vault with a score of 8.15. Melissa Stanton of Hamline University took three-first place finishes, with victories in the all-around competition with a score of 36.275, the uneven bars with a score of 9.475 and the vault with a score of 8.80.

UW-Oshkosh freshman Heather Downs added a fifth-place finish in the all-around competition by totaling a score of 32.75. Her all-around score was aided by a fifth-place mark of 8.30 on the vault and sixth-place counts of 8.35 on the balance beam and 8.20 on the uneven bars. The Titans also received a third-place finish from senior Kristine Arquette on the vault (8.45) and a fourth-place finish from senior Lisa VanderJagt in the floor exercise (8.85).
