Gustavus Wins 2002 NCGA Midwest Regional Championships

(St. Peter, Minn., March 8, 2002) - The Gustavus Adolphus College Golden Gusties finished first at the 2002 NCGA Midwest Region Championships at the Lund Center in St. Peter, Minn. on Friday night with a team score of 180.600. The Gusties nipped favorite UW-La Crosse by 0.425 points to win the meet and clinch a spot in the 2002 NCGA National Championships on March 22-23, at Ithaca College in New York. Hamline University finished third with 177.600 points and UW-River Falls jumped up to fourth place with a score of 176.325. The Falcons' score may be good enough to propel them past UW-Whitewater and into the NCGA National Championships as the fourth team from the Midwest Region. The four qualifiers will be offically announced tomorrow by the NCGA. The Regional Championship score accounts for 40% of the National Qualifying score. It is added to the seasonal average, which is valued at 60% of the National Qualifying score, to determine the four teams that will advance to the National Championships.

Gustavus freshman Amanda Parker won the all-around with a score of 37.325. She also won the vault with a 9.475. Hamline's Melissa Stanton finished second in the all-around with a 37.075. She won the uneven bars with a 9.375. Jennie Williams of UW-Oshkosh finished first on the balance beam with a 9.675, and UW-La Crosse's Leslie Stewart won the floor exercise with a 9.500.
