Titans Take Third Place At NCGA Championship

The UW-Oshkosh women’s gymnastics team finished third with its highest score of the season at the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) Championship held Friday and Saturday (March 24-25) in Brockport, N.Y.

UW-La Crosse compiled a score of 186.25 to capture its sixth straight NCGA title and 11th in school history. Ithaca College (N.Y.) finished second in the seven-team meet with a score of 183.80, while UW-Oshkosh listed third with a count of 183.75. UW-Oshkosh’s overall score included season bests of 46.875 on the vault, 45.70 on the uneven bars and 45.475 on the balance beam.

State University of New York-Brockport finished fourth in the team rankings with a score of 183.65, while Massachusetts Institute of Technology placed fifth at 182.70, Ursinus College (Pa.) sixth at 182.525 and UW-Eau Claire seventh at 179.425.

UW-Oshkosh had four All-America performances in the meet, including a pair by Teresa Phipps (So. • Rocky Mount, N.C.). Phipps placed fifth on the uneven bars with a score of 18.85 and sixth in the all-around competition with a sum of 37.075.

Also receiving All-America status were UW-Oshkosh’s Vanessa Virbitsky (So. • Harrisburg, Pa.) and Jennifer Kaye (Fr. • Brookfield). Both gymnasts earned their All-America award on the vault, where Virbitsky finished second with a score of 19.30 and Kaye sixth with a mark of 19.075.

The top six individuals in each event and the top 10 individuals in the all-around competition received All-America recognition.

In addition to the All-America performances, UW-Oshkosh had Kaye place seventh on the uneven bars with a score of 18.775, Kelly Busacker (Fr. • LaVista, Neb.) 11th on the uneven bars with a count of 18.275, Marissa Jungels (Fr. • Geneva, Ill.) 12th on the uneven bars with a mark of 18.20, Virbitsky 13th in the all-around competition with a tally of 36.175 and Lauren Mareno (Jr. • Crystal Lake, Ill.) 15th in the floor exercise with a number of 18.80.

Sarah Bulka of State University of New York-Brockport won a pair of event titles at the NCGA Championship. She took first place in the all-around competition with a score of 38.475 and on the vault with a mark of 19.50.

Other event champions were Jenna Houle of UW-La Crosse on the balance beam with a score of 19.275, Theresa Lynch of UW-Eau Claire in the floor exercise with a count of 19.425 and Nina Schubert of UW-La Crosse on the uneven bars with a tally of 19.625.

UW-Oshkosh was making its 12th appearance at the NCGA Championship, with previous visits in 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2003 and 2004. The Titans won the meet in 1989 and finished second in 1990, 1991, 1993 and 2001.

UW-Oshkosh's Nadalie Walsh was named the 2006 NCGA Coach of the Year after leading the Titans to their best national finish since 2001 when they placed second. Walsh is the second UW-Oshkosh head coach to win the award, joining Paul Scardina in 1995.

State University of New York-Cortland’s Lindsey Marranaca was named the NCGA’s 2006 Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

The NCGA also named 26 gymnasts to its 2006 All-Academic Team. Among the selections was UW-Oshkosh's Alyssa Moreck (Sr. • Berlin, Md.). A gymnast must be in her final year of competition and maintain a 3.00 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.00 scale) in order to qualify for the All-Academic Team.

Titans Finish Third At
WIAC Championship, NCGA West Regional

Season-best team scores in the floor exercise and on the vault helped UW-Oshkosh finish third at the WIAC Women’s Gymnastics Championship held Friday (March 3) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-La Crosse compiled a score of 182.90 to capture its 10th consecutive WIAC title and 17th overall. UW-Eau Claire finished second in the eight-team meet with a score of 181.00.

UW-Oshkosh, aided by team scores of 47.50 in the floor exercise and 46.50 on the vault, finished third with 180.90 points. The Titans, who own 14 WIAC titles, have finished third at the league championship four straight seasons.

Hamline University (Minn.) placed fourth in the team standings with a score of 179.175, while UW-Whitewater ranked fifth at 178.90, Winona State University (Minn.) sixth at 178.375, Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) seventh at 177.85 and UW-Stout eighth at 173.50.

The WIAC Championship also served as the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) West Regional. Teams advancing from the meet to the NCGA Championship on March 24-25 in Brockport, N.Y., were UW-La Crosse, UW-Eau Claire and UW-Oshkosh. UW-La Crosse, the five-time defending NCGA national champion, has claimed four consecutive NCGA West Regional titles.

Mackenzie Howard led UW-La Crosse at the WIAC Championship/NCGA West Regional. Howard finished first in the all-around competition with a score of 37.575, on the vault with a mark of 9.65 and on the balance beam with a tally of 9.475. She shared the top listing on the balance beam with Brynn Strenslie of Hamline University.

Additional individual champions were Danielle Crinzi of UW-Whitewater and Ann Fitzsimmons of UW-La Crosse. Crinzi placed first in the floor exercise with a score of 9.675, while Fitzsimmons took the top listing on the uneven bars with a mark of 9.425.

Vanessa Virbitsky (So. • Harrisburg, Pa.) led UW-Oshkosh by finishing second on the vault with a score of 9.525 and fifth in both the floor exercise and all-around competitions with marks of 9.525 and 36.25, respectively.

Other second-place efforts belonged to the Titans’ Kristen Beeler (Fr. • West Valley City, Utah) in the floor exercise with a score of 9.65 and Kelly Busacker (Fr. • La Vista, Neb.) on the uneven bars with a mark of 9.40.

UW-Oshkosh also had Teresa Phipps (So. • Rocky Mount, N.C,) finish eighth on the uneven bars with a score of 9.00 and 10th in the all-around competition with a count of 35.40. Sharing 10th place in the floor exercise with scores of 9.45 were UW-Oshkosh’s Lauren Mareno (Sr. • Crystal Lake, Ill.) and Melissa Riley (Jr. • Hutchinson, Kan.).

The top six individual finishers in each category received All-WIAC accolades.

UW-Eau Claire's Jean DeLisle, UW-Oshkosh's Nadalie Walsh and Winona State University’s Beckie Rolbiecki were voted as recipients of the WIAC Coach of the Year Award. Walsh also received the honor a year ago.

UW-La Crosse’s Nina Schubert was selected as the winner of the WIAC’s Judy Kruckman Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award.

Division I Foes To Much For Titans

Teresa PhippsVanessa VirbitskyThe UW-Oshkosh women’s gymnastics team compiled its second-highest score of the season, but the Titans still came up short against three NCAA Division I opponents at the Uno’s Classic held Friday (Feb. 24) in Tempe, Ariz.

Host Arizona State University posted its best score of the year to win the quadrangular with a count of 196.95. Oregon State University finished second with a score of 195.55, while Boise State University (Idaho) placed third with 192.275 and UW-Oshkosh fourth with 181.25. The teams performed in front of 1,321 fans, the eighth-largest crowd in Arizona State University history.

15th-ranked Arizona State University owned all five individual champions, including Ashley Kelly who finished first in the all-around competition with a score of 39.60 and on the uneven bars with a tally of 9.975.

The Sun Devils also received first-place efforts from April Boone on the vault with a score of 9.90, Nicole Harris on the balance beam with a count of 9.925 and Cassandra Johnson in the floor exercise with a figure of 9.925.

Vanessa Virbitsky (So. • Harrisburg, Pa.) placed ninth with a score of 36.625 in the all-around competition for UW-Oshkosh’s highest individual finish. Virbitsky also ranked 15th on the balance beam with a score of 9.625 and 18th in the floor exercise with a mark of 9.325.

UW-Oshkosh also had Teresa Phipps (So. • Rocky Mount, N.C.) finish 16th in the floor exercise with a score of 9.375, Meme Sadler (So. • Palatine, Ill.) 17th on the uneven bars with a count of 9.20 and Rachel Morrison (Fr. • Oswego, Ill.) 18th on the vault with a tally of 9.30.

The Titans received 19th-place scores of 9.225 on the vault from Kim Edson (Jr. • Eastampton, N.J.), 9.15 from Shannon DeHart (Fr. • Mason, Ohio) on the balance beam, 9.05 on the uneven bars from Marissa Jungels (Fr. • Geneva, Ill.) and 9.20 in the floor exercise from Lauren Mareno (Sr. • Crystal Lake, Ill.).

Titans Oust Blue Devils

Meme SadlerVanessa VirbitskyThe UW-Oshkosh women’s gymnastics team accumulated its highest score of the season and easily defeated UW-Stout, 181.675-168.45, on Friday (Feb. 17) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Oshkosh’s overall score included season bests of 46.825 in the floor exercise, 45.50 on the uneven bars and 45.15 on the balance beam. The Titans registered a score of 44.20 on the vault.

UW-Oshkosh owned the top individual finisher on each of the four apparatus, including Vanessa Virbitsky (So. • Harrisburg, Pa.) who posted first-place scores of 9.525 in the floor exercise and 8.975 on the vault.

The Titans also received winning scores of 9.625 on the uneven bars from Kelly Busacker (Fr. • La Vista, Neb.) and 9.50 on the balance beam from Meme Sadler (So. • Palatine, Ill.).

UW-Stout's Rhian Paulson won the all-around competition with a score of 36.90.

UW-Oshkosh dominated the meet by having six of the top seven individual scores in the floor exercise and on the vault. The Titans also had five of the top six individual marks on the uneven bars.

UW-Oshkosh's lone second-place finish went to Marissa Jungels (Fr. • Geneva, Ill.) on the uneven bars with a score of 9.40.

Placing third for the Titans were Sadler on the uneven bars with a score of 9.125, Lauren Mareno (Sr. • Crystal Lake, Ill.) in the floor exercise with a tally of 9.375, Melissa Riley (Jr. • Hutchinson, Kansas) on the vault with a count of 8.925 and Stephanie Sisk (Fr. • Beloit) on the balance beam with a mark of 9.30.

Finishing fourth for UW-Oshkosh were Kristen Beeler (Fr. • West Valley City, Utah) and Brianna Lentz (Sr. • West Allis) in the floor exercise with scores of 9.35, Shannon DeHart (Fr. • Mason, Ohio) on the balance beam with a mark of 9.10 and Rachel Morrison (Fr. • Oswego, Ill.) on the vault with a tally of 8.925.

Blugolds Register Win Over Titans

Kelly BusackerKim EdsonLynn Morris won the all-around competition and finished first on two apparatus to lead the UW-Eau Claire women’s gymnastics team to a 175.975-171.55 victory over UW-Oshkosh on Friday (Feb. 10) in Eau Claire.

Morris took first place in the all-around competition with a score of 36.45. She also tallied winning scores of 8.75 on the balance beam and 9.275 on the vault. Morris shared the top listing on the balance beam with teammate Melanie Nichols.

UW-Eau Claire picked up another first-place finish when Theresa Lynch scored a 9.40 in the floor exercise competition. The Blugolds dominated the floor exercise event by owning the top six finishes.

UW-Oshkosh’s lone first-place finish belonged to Kelly Busacker (Fr. • LaVista, Neb.). Busacker won the uneven bars competition with a score of 9.35.

UW-Oshkosh had a pair of third-place finishes as Kim Edson (Jr. • Eastampton, N.J.) scored a 9.075 on the vault and Meme Sadler (So. • Palatine, Ill.) a 8.60 on the uneven bars.

The Titans also had Brianna Lentz (Sr. • West Allis) finish fourth on the balance beam with a score of 8.65 and fifth on the vault with a count of 8.95. Marissa Jungels (Fr. • Geneva, Ill.) added a fifth-place score of 8.25 on the uneven bars.

Titans Clip Warhawks

UW-Oshkosh's overall team score included season bests of 43.575 on the balance beam, 45.65 in the floor exercise and 43.375 on the uneven bars. UW-Whitewater's overall team score included a season-best 45.10 on the vault.

UW-Oshkosh had the top individual finish on two apparatus as Kristen Beeler (Fr. • West Valley City, Utah) posted a score of 9.50 in the floor exercise and Meme Sadler (So. • Palatine, Ill.) a count of 9.05 on the uneven bars.

UW-Whitewater's Tracy Cummings had three first-place performances as she compiled scores of 36.175 in the all-around competition, 9.225 on the balance beam and 9.30 on the vault.

Brianna Lentz (Sr. • West Allis) tallied a pair of second-place finishes for UW-Oshkosh after registering scores of 9.20 on the balance beam and 9.35 in the floor exercise. She also ranked third on the vault with a score of 9.025.

UW-Oshkosh's remaining second-place finish belonged to Vanessa Virbitsky (So. • Harrisburg, Pa.) on the uneven bars with a score of 8.925.

Titans Finish Fourth At Gershon/McLellan Invitational

Host UW-La Crosse captured the team title with a score of 178.325, while UW-Eau Claire finished second at 175.40, Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) third at 172.00 and UW-Oshkosh fourth at 169.40.

UW-La Crosse had four individual champions as Jennifer Houle won the balance beam with a score of 9.475, Mackenzie Howard the floor exercise with a score of 9.15, Jackie LaFleur the vault with a score of 9.425 and Nina Schubert uneven bars with a score of 9.70. UW-Eau Claire’s Lynn Morris compiled a score of 36.275 to win the all-around competition.

Brianna Lentz (Sr. • West Allis) was the top UW-Oshkosh finisher in the meet, placing third on the balance beam with a score of 9.05. The Titans also had Kelly Busacker (Fr. • LaVista, Neb.) finish fifth on the uneven bars with a score of 8.825.

Among UW-Oshkosh’s other efforts were Rachel Morrison’s (Fr. • Oswego) 11th-place scores of 9.125 on the vault and 8.55 in the floor exercise, Melissa Riley’s (Jr. • Hutchinson, Kan.) 12th-place score of 9.10 on the vault, Kim Edson’s (Jr. • Eastampton, N.J.) 13th-place score of 9.025 on the vault.

Gusties Defeat Titans

Kim EdsonTeresa PhippsThe Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) women's gymnastics team had the top individual finish on each of the four apparatus and defeated UW-Oshkosh, 171.15-165.75, on Saturday (Jan.28) in St. Peter, Minn.

Recording first-place finishes for the Gusties were Danielle Abel on the vault with a score of 9.10, Nicole Gergen in the floor exercise with a tally of 8.85, Laura Hansen on the uneven bars with a mark of 8.80 and Jaime Tsurusaki on the balance beam with a count of 8.725.

In addition to its four first-place efforts, Gustavus Adolphus College also owned the second, third and fourth-place finisher in the floor exercise and the second and third-place finisher on both the balance beam and vault.

Kim Edson (Jr. • Eastampton, N.J.) and Teresa Phipps (So. • Rocky Mount, N.C.) led UW-Oshkosh with second-place performances on the vault and balance beam, respectively. Edson was one of three athletes to post a score of 9.00 on the vault, while Phipps compiled a mark of 8.50 on the uneven bars.

Third-place finishes went to the Titans' Kelly Busacker (Fr. • LaViste, Neb.) on the uneven bars with a score of 8.45 and Meme Sadler (So. • Palatine, Ill.) on the balance beam with a mark of 8.525. Sadler also tallied a score of 8.30 on the uneven bars to tie teammate Teresa Baldassari (Jr. • Santa Rosa, Calif.) for fourth place.

Warriors Topple Titans

Kelly BusackerBrianna LentzAlexandra Nugent and Eileen Strube had a pair of first-place performances as the Winona State University (Minn.) women's gymnastics team defeated UW-Oshkosh, 172.60-165.80, on Monday (Jan. 23) in Winona, Minn.

Nugent won the floor exercise with a score of 8.85 and the vault with a mark of 9.25. She also finished second on the balance beam with a score of 8.95.

Strube won the all-around competition with a count of 34.925 and the balance beam with a tally of 9.15. She also placed third on the uneven bars with a score of 8.575.

UW-Oshkosh's lone first-place finish belonged to Kelly Busacker (Fr. • LaVista, Neb.) on the uneven bars. She won the event with a score of 9.15.

The Titans also had Brianna Lentz (Sr. • West Allis) finish second and Lauren Mareno (Sr. • Crystal Lake, Ill.) third in the floor exercise with scores of 8.80 and 8.70, respectively.

Rachel Morrison (Fr. • Oswego, Ill.) registered a pair of four-place rankings for UW-Oshkosh after posting scores of 8.90 on the vault and 8.40 on the uneven bars.

Defending National Champion Defeats Titans

Kim EdsonBrianna LentzThe UW-La Crosse women’s gymnastics team swept the top-three listings in three of the four events as it defeated UW-Oshkosh, 178.45-171.95, on Saturday (Jan. 14) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-La Crosse, which has captured the last five National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) titles, outscored UW-Oshkosh in all four events and had the top three individual finishers on the balance beam, uneven bars and vault. The Eagles also had the second and third-place finisher in the floor exercise.

Jackie LaFleur, who finished first in the all-around competition with a score of 34.40, led UW-La Crosse. She also took the top ranking on the vault with a tally of 9.40. Other first-place finishers for the Eagles were Jennifer Houle on the balance beam with a score of 9.40 and Stephanie Mitchell on the uneven bars with a mark of 9.275.


UW-Oshkosh’s lone first-place finish was achieved by Brianna Lentz (Sr. • West Allis) in the floor exercise. Lentz recorded the event’s top finish with a score of 9.425.

Finishing second for the Titans was Kim Edson (Jr. • Eastampton, N.J.) in the all-around competition. Edson compiled a score of 32.425, including marks of 8.575 on the balance beam and 8.55 on the vault.

UW-Oshkosh also had four fourth-place efforts as Shannon DeHart (Fr. • Mason, Ohio) posted a score of 8.925 on the balance beam, Lauren Mareno (Sr. • Crystal Lake, Ill.) a 9.05 in the floor exercise, Rachel Morrison (Fr. • Oswego, Ill.) a 9.00 on the vault and Meme Sadler (So. • Palatine, Ill.) an 8.95 on the uneven bars.

Titans Victorious In Season Opener

Lauren MarenoRachel Morrison'Lauren Mareno (Sr. • Crystal Lake, Ill.) finished first in two events as the UW-Oshkosh women’s gymnastics team opened its 2006 season with a 169.325-167.475 victory over Hamline University (Minn.) on Friday (Jan. 6) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Oshkosh registered the victory by outscoring Hamline University in three of the four events, including 41.10-38.55 on the balance beam. The Titans also scored better than the Pipers on the vault and in the floor exercise. Hamline University topped UW-Oshkosh on the uneven bars by a score of 42.425-41.45.

Mareno led UW-Oshkosh by winning the balance beam with a score of 8.65 and the floor exercise with a mark of 9.35.

Hamline University had three first-place efforts in the meet, including a pair by Kayla Sirmans. Sirmans had the highest score in the all-around competition with a 33.175 and the top count on the vault with a 9.125. The Pipers’ Emily Wind finished first on the parallel bars with a score of 9.125.

UW-Oshkosh’s lone second-place finish went to Rachel Morrison (Fr. • Oswego, Ill.) on the vault with a score of 9.05.
