Hardtke, Marx Chosen Verizon Academic All-America

Susan HardtkeJessica MarxTwo UW-Oshkosh student-athletes, both first-time honorees, have been named to the 2002 Verizon College Division Academic All-America Women's Track and Field/Cross Country Teams.

UW-Oshkosh student-athletes cited for their academic and athletic excellence were second team selection Susan Hardtke and third team pick Jessica Marx. The College Division of the Verizon Academic All-America Women's Track & Field/Cross Country Team includes schools belonging to the NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III or the NAIA.

Hardtke, a senior from Kewaunee, owns a 3.97 cumulative grade point average as an elementary education major. Hardtke compiled 11 varsity letters during her four years at UW-Oshkosh, with four in both indoor and outdoor track and field and three in cross country. She was member of WIAC championship teams in cross country in 1999 and 2000 and indoor track and field in 1999.

This past year, Hardtke ran a leg on UW-Oshkosh's distance medley relay team that finished first at the NCAA Division III and WIAC Indoor Track and Field championships. She also finished first in the 3,200 and second in the 1,600-meter relays at the 2002 WIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship and 124th at the 2001 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championship.

Marx, a junior from Mukwonago, owns a 3.91 cumulative grade point average as an elementary education major. Marx has totaled seven varsity letters during her four years at UW-Oshkosh, with four in indoor track and field and three in outdoor track and field. Marx, who will compete in outdoor track and field for the Titans next spring, was a member of UW-Oshkosh's 1999 indoor track and field team that claimed the WIAC championship.

This past year, Marx ran a leg on UW-Oshkosh's distance medley relay team that finished first at the NCAA Division III and WIAC Indoor Track and Field championships. She also finished first in the 3,200 meter relay at the 2002 WIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship and second in both the 400 meter dash and 1,600 meter relay at the 2002 WIAC Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field championships. At the 2002 WIAC Indoor Track and Field Championship, Marx was named the league's scholar-athlete award winner.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Verizon Academic All-America program, which was founded by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) in 1952 to recognize collegiate student-athletes for their outstanding achievements in the classroom and on the playing field. Over the past 50 years, the Verizon Academic All-America program has grown into one of the most recognized and prestigious collegiate scholar-athlete awards in the country.

The Verizon Academic All-America Teams are selected by a vote of the 1,800-member CoSIDA. To be eligible, an athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve and maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.20 on a scale of 4.00.

Since the inception of the Verizon Academic All-America Program, 26 UW-Oshkosh student-athletes have combined for 34 awards, including four-time honoree Laura Nelson in women's track and field/cross country. In WIAC listings, UW-Oshkosh ranks second to the 35 Verizon Academic All-America mentions totaled by UW-La Crosse.

Titans Place Eighth at NCAA Nationals

Elizabeth WoodworthThe UW-Oshkosh women’s track team produced four All-American finishes and an individual national championship effort on its way to a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championship, hosted by Macalaster College.

A trio of talented sophomores, including Liz Woodworth who finished the 800-meter run in two minutes, 9.06 seconds to take the NCAA Championship in that event, led the Titans, who garnered 22 team points. Woodworth’s time set a new record for Macalester Stadium, and was the best posting in Division III during the 2002 season.

Penny Godleske placed sixth in the hammer throw with a distance of 157 feet-11 inches, while Kay Mikolajczak placed fifth in the heptathlon with 4,532 points. An 11:00.04 time gave Jackie Munoz a fourth-place finish in the steeplechase to complete the Titans All-American roster.

Rounding out the day for UW-Oshkosh were point-earning performances from senior Katie Lindsay. Lindsay wrapped up her UW-Oshkosh career with a 38-foot leap in the triple jump, good for ninth place.

Wheaton College took the team championship with 67 points, while UW-La Crosse came in third with 38. McMurry University, Williams College, and Christopher Newport rounded out the top five. In the team competition, 74 schools earned at least one point.

Titans Finish Second At NCAA Indoor Championship

An impressive nine records were broken during the 2002 NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships held Friday and Saturday (March 8-9) at the Ohio Northern University Sports Center in Ada, Ohio.

The UW-La Crosse men and the Wheaton College (Mass.) women successfully defended their team titles from a year ago.

In the men's meet, UW-La Crosse scored 54 points to win their second straight and ninth title overall in the 18-year history of the event. Lincoln University (Pa.) was second with 48 points, Montclair State University (N.J.) third with 29 points, Wheaton College (Mass.) fourth with 27 points and UW-Oshkosh fith with 26.

Wheaton College (Mass.) won its fourth straight women's title by amassing 65.5 points, just missing the Championships record of 66 points by Christopher Newport University (Va.) in 1988.

UW-Oshkosh was second with 37 points, UW-La Crosse third with 30.5 points, Williams College (Mass.) fourth with 29 points and Carthage College fifth with 24 points.

Individually on the women's side, Wheaton College's (Mass.) Shimera Daniels set two NCAA Division III records, winning the triple jump with a distance of 12.62 meters and the long jump with a jump of 5.96 meters.

Her teammate, Amber James, set a record in the 400 meter ash with a time of 55.46 seconds and combined with Niara Woods, Tessa Donoghue and April Butler on Wheaton College's 4 x 400 relay team that won in 3:48.78.

Nebraska Wesleyan University's Kelly Bowen won the pole vault by clearing an NCAA rDivision III record 3.77 meters.

In the men's competition, Jeremy Scott of Allegheny College (Pa.), Andrew Rock of UW-La Crosse and Matt Groose of UW-Oshkosh all set NCAA Division III records in individual events and the Haverford College (Pa.) medley relay team also set an NCAA Division III Championships mark.

Scott won the pole vault by clearing 5.50 meters, Rock won the 400-meter dash in 47.47 seconds and Groose won the 800-meter run in 1:49.73. Haverford College's relay team finished in 9:58.53.

In addition to Groose's first-place finish in the 800 meter run, the UW-Oshkosh men's team also received a third-place finish from David Cisewski in the 5,000 meter run (14:41.82), eighth-place finish from Kirk DeWindt in the 1,500 meter run and an eighth-place finish from Eamon McKenna in the 5,000 meter run (14:54.25). The Titans' distance medley relay team of Cisewski, Groose, John LeRoy and Steve Wagner finished second with a time of 9:59.52.

UW-Oshkosh's women's team received a first-place finish from Carrie Danielewicz in the high jump (5-7 1/4), first-place finish from Elizabeth Woodworth in the 800 meter run (2:12.41), sixth-place finish from Jessica Marx in the 800 meter run (2:15.73), seventh-place finish from Jill Kincaid in the triple jump (37-10 1/2) and a seventh-place finish from Niki Riemer in the pole vault (11-4 1/2). The Titans' distance medley relay team of Susan Hardtke, Marx, Jackie Munoz and Woodworth also finished first with a time of 11:46.19.

A total of 16 Ohio Northern University Sports Center records were broken during the event.

Titans Finish Second At WIAC Indoor Championship

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's indoor track & field team won its third straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) championship Saturday in Kachel Fieldhouse. The Eagles finished with 209.00 points. UW-Oshkosh was second (143.00) followed by UW-Stevens Point (115.00), UW-Eau Claire (103.00), UW-Whitewater (58.00), UW-Stout (22.00), UW-River Falls (21.00), UW-Platteville (16.00) and UW-Superior (11.00).

La Crosse had three individual champions and captured two relays titles during the two-day event. Heather Kleckner won the pole vault with a league record height of 12-6 3/4. Jocelyn Loe claimed the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.66 and Angela Klatt the 200-meter dash in 25.36.

The Eagles also won the 4x200-meter relay in 1:44.75 and the 4x400-meter relay in 4:00.88. It was the 11th-consecutive season that La Crosse has won the 4x400-meter conference crown.

Oshkosh had five individual champions in four events and one relay title. Carrie Danielewicz won the high jump with a height of 5-3 3/4 and the pentathlon with 3,305 points. Elizabeth Woodworth became a two-time league champion in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:11.35. Her time set a new conference record. Jackie Munoz won the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:40.36, while Jill Kincaid won the triple jump for the third consecutive season with a distance of 38-6. The Titans' distance medley relay team won in 11:57.01.

Eau Claire's Jane-Marie Ovanin won the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:11.05 and the 5,000-meter run in 17:34.38. The Blugolds' Breanna McMullen won the 55-meter high hurdles with a time of 8.55.

Whitewater's Tabitha Fendrick won the shot put crown for the third consecutive season with a distance of 47-0 1/4. The Warhawks' Jessica Janson won the 55-meter dash in 7.28.

Stevens Point's Megan Lundahl won the 20-pound weight throw with a toss of 52-4 1/2. She also won the event in 2000.

Superior's Sarah Moravchik won the long jump with a distance of 18-5, becoming the first Yellowjacket in school history to win a conference indoor women's title in any field event.

Eau Claire's Jane-Marie Ovanin was named the Track Performer of the Meet, while Oshkosh's Carrie Danielewicz was named the Field Performer of the Meet.

La Crosse head coach Pat Healy was selected the Coach of the Year for the third consecutive year. It is Healy's fifth conference indoor championship to go along with six outdoor titles.

Many of the competitors in the WIAC championship will travel to Ohio Northern University next Friday and Saturday, March 8-9 for the NCAA III Indoor Championship.
