ADA — An impressive nine NCAA Division III records were broken during the 2002 Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday and Saturday at the ONU Sports Center.
The Wisconsin-LaCrosse men and the Wheaton (Mass.) women successfully defended their team titles from a year ago.
In the men's meet, LaCrosse scored 54 to win its second straight and ninth title overall in the 18-year history of the event. Lincoln (Pa.) was second with 48 points, Montclair State (N.J.) was third with 29 points and Wheaton (Mass.) was fourth with 27 points.
Wheaton won its fourth straight women's title by amassing 65.5 points, just missing the Championships record of 66 points by Christopher Newport (Va.) in 1988.
Wisconsin-Oshkosh was second with 37 points, Wisconsin-LaCrosse was third with 30.50 points and Williams (Mass.) was fourth with 29 points.
Individually on the women's side, Wheaton's Shimera Daniels set two NCAA III records, winning the triple jump with a distance of 12.62 meters and the long jump with a jump of 5.96 meters.
Her teammate, Amber James, set a record in the 400 dash with a time of 55.46 seconds and combined with Niara Woods, Tessa Donoghue and April Butler on Wheaton's 4 x 400 relay team that won in 3:48.78.
Nebraska Wesleyan's Kelly Bowen won the pole vault by clearing an NCAA record 3.77 meters.
In the men's competition, Jeremy Scott of Allegheny (Pa.), Andrew Rock of Wisconsin-LaCrosse and Matt Groose of Wisconsin-Oshkosh all set NCAA records in individual events and the Haverford (pa.) medley relay team also set an NCAA Division III Championships mark.
Scott won the pole vault by clearing 5.50 meters, Rock won the 400-meter dash in 47.47 seconds and Groose won the 800-meter run in 1:49.73.
Haverford's relay team finished in 9:58.53.
A total of 16 ONU Sports Centers were broken during the event.
