Track Completed At Oshkosh Sports Complex

A newly completed track at the Oshkosh Sports Complex has brought the $5.7-million project one step closer to completion.

The complex and its track, football field, baseball and soccer facilities will be a sports attraction for the entire Fox Valley, said Darryl Sims, UW-Oshkosh athletics advancement officer.

“We expect the complex to be used about 190 times a year, with an estimated annual economic impact of $25 million,” Sims said.

The Olympic-quality track is one of the finest in the NCAA Division III. The running surface is identical to that of the 1992 Summer Olympics held in Barcelona, Spain.

The red track features nine lanes. A two-layer construction allows for easy maintenance and traction and provides outstanding resilience and shock absorption.

Competition on the new track will begin this spring, with its first major event being the 2006 WIAC Championship. High school athletes from Appleton, Fond du Lac, Kaukauna, Kimberly, Menasha, Neenah and Oshkosh will use the track for the Fox Valley Association Championship in 2006 as well.

UW-Oshkosh has also placed a bid to host the NCAA Division III Championship in 2007 and 2008.

Through a unique partnership of UW-Oshkosh, Oshkosh Area School District and Unified Catholic Schools of Oshkosh, the Oshkosh Sports Complex will become the home for many of the city’s middle school, high school and collegiate athletes.

“Eventually, premier statewide events will come to the Oshkosh Sports Complex,” Sims said. “The facility will also attract more regional and national sporting and cultural events, an added bonus for Oshkosh and the Fox Valley.”

A formal grand opening for the Oshkosh Sports Complex will be held Oct. 22 during UW-Oshkosh's 2005 Homecoming Weekend.

The Oshkosh Sports Complex is funded entirely through private donations. The project is entering its third phase, which includes updating locker rooms, team meeting rooms, coaches’ rooms and restroom facilities. Sims said these amenities are essential if the facility is going to accommodate the increasing number of athletes and fans it will attract.

Robyn Jarocki (Jr. • Merrill) threw to a pair of first-place finishes as UW-Oshkosh successfully defended its team title at the NCAA Division III Women's Indoor Track and Field Championship held this past weekend (March 11-12) in Bloomington, Ill.

UW-Oshkosh scored 36 points, including 20 by Jarocki, to capture its fifth NCAA Division III indoor title. Wartburg College (Iowa) finished second with 32 points, while Amherst College (Mass.) finished third with 26, Williams College (Mass.) fourth with 24 and the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) fifth with 22. A total of 60 teams scored points at this year's meet.

UW-Oshkosh's victory, which matched NCAA Division III indoor titles won by the Titans in 1994, 1995, 1996 and 2004, came down to the last event of the meet, the 1,600-meter relay. UW-Oshkosh held a 36-30 over Wartburg College lead going into the relay and had to watch its fate as the Knights were entered in the event. If the third-seeded Knights finished first or second in the relay, they won the team title, and if they placed third, they tied the Titans for the team championship. When the race ended, Wartburg College finished seventh, thus, awarding the team title to UW-Oshkosh.

Jarocki was named the Outstanding Field Athlete of the Meet after winning the 20 pound weight throw and shot put events. She took the 20-pound weight throw with a toss of 67-2 to establish a new mark for the meet and for UW-Oshkosh. Jarocki won the shot put with a hurl of 50-4.

UW-Oshkosh qualified only four athletes for the meet, but all of them received All-America recognition, an honor going to the top eight finishers in each event.

UW-Oshkosh's national championship was the 36th in the history of the UW-Oshkosh athletics program, including the 22nd in NCAA Division III competition.
