Schettle Among Final Nine Candidates
For NCAA Woman Of The Year Award

Sarah Schettle

Former UW-Oshkosh student-athlete Sarah Schettle has been recognized as one of three Division III candidates for the 2008 NCAA Woman of the Year Award.

The honor recognizes outstanding female senior student-athletes for their cumulative collegiate achievements in service, leadership, athletics and academics. Nominations for this year’s award were submitted by each NCAA institution and reviewed by the respective conference office. Upon receiving nominations from its member institutions, each conference was responsible for assessing each nominee’s eligibility and subsequently selecting a conference nominee.

Schettle was chosen as the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's (WIAC) nominee for this year's award. The Oshkosh native joined 130 conference and independent nominees who were forwarded to the NCAA Woman of the Year selection committee.

The selection committee then narrowed the list of nominees to 30, with 10 of them representing each of the three NCAA divisions (I, II, III). From the group of 30, nine national finalists were selected.

Schettle will be recognized as a national finalist at the NCAA Awards Dinner on Oct. 19 in Indianapolis, Ind. The NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics will then announce the 2008 Woman of the Year. An hour-long broadcast of the event will air on ESPN2 at 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 5.

Schettle lettered as a member of the UW-Oshkosh track and field from 2004-07. She earned All-America honors in the 1,600-meter relay at the 2006 and 2007 NCAA Division III indoor championships. Schettle helped the Titans to NCAA Division III indoor titles in 2004, 2005 and 2006 and NCAA Division III outdoor championships in 2004, 2006 and 2007.

Schettle also was a four-time letter winner for the Titans in swimming and diving. She collected 12 WIAC medals for finishing in the top eight as an individual or as a relay team member at the league's championship meet. Schettle was named her team's Most Improved Performer in 2004 and her squad's Most Valuable Performer in 2006.

Last fall, Schettle earned a letter as a member of the UW-Oshkosh cross country team.

Schettle won the WIAC's Judy Kruckman Scholar-Athlete Award in indoor track and field in 2007 and swimming and diving in 2008. She was named to the 2008 CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America At-Large Second Team and announced by UW-Oshkosh as one of its nine 2008 Chancellor’s Award for Excellence winners.

In 2006, the NCAA Committee on Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct named Schettle as one of its two National Sportsmanship Award winners.

Schettle received various academic scholarships while attending UW-Oshkosh, including the Ronald Reagan College Leaders Scholarship, the Kimberly Clark Bright Future Scholarship, the UW-Oshkosh Foundation Scholarship and the John E. Kerrigan Scholarship.

She also was involved in many campus activities and organizations, including No Limits Support Association, Student Alumni Ambassadors (President), University Honors Program, Athletes in Action, Biology Club (President) and the Optimist Club. She also co-founded eMentors, an online program connecting students with alumni.

Schettle has volunteered with the Winnebago County Republican Party and was a leader of College Republicans at UW-Oshkosh. In the community, she volunteered in blood drives and for Special Olympics.

Schettle graduated from UW-Oshkosh last spring. She majored in both chemistry and Spanish and boasted a 3.90 cumulative grade point average. Schettle is currently attending graduate classes at UW-La Crosse.

In addition to Schettle, other national finalists are Susan Ackermann (lacrosse) of Division III Salisbury University (Md.), Nkolika Anosike (basketball) of Division I University of Tennessee, Jennifer Artichuk (swimming & diving) of Division II Delta State University (Miss.), Shanti Freitas (swimming & diving) of Division III Smith College (Mass.), Arianna Lambie (cross country and track & field) of Division I Stanford University (Calif.), Samantha Mitchell (volleyball and track & field) of Division II Mount Olive College (N.C.), Lindsey Ozimek (soccer) of Division I University of North Carolina-Charlotte and Heather Walker (volleyball and softball) of Division II Georgian Court University (N.J.).

Titans Easily Win Own Invitational

Anna Loveland Jenny Melville Ayla Mitchell Jessie Scheer

It’s safe to say that the UW-Oshkosh women’s track and field team is prepared for the upcoming conference championship.

In a tune-up meet held on Saturday (Feb. 16) in Kolf Sports center, the Titans dominated a nine-team field. They used the meet to display their outstanding depth. Their overall score of 312 points was well ahead of the closest competition. Carroll College was the runner-up with only 102 points.

The throwers destroyed the competition in the shot put and the weight throw as they took thirteen of the sixteen scoring positions. Peggy Seidler (Fr. • Merrill) led the way in the shot-put with a throw of 45-10. This throw is her seasonal best and automatically qualifies her for the national championship meet. Susie Trzebiatowski (So. • Rosholt) also had a throw that qualified her for nationals, but provisionally and not automatically.  Her longest throw went for 43-5 1/4. Ellie Sitek (So. • Marinette) was third with a throw of 40-2 3/4. The Titans then swept the fifth through eighth positions with Rebecca Masephol (Sr. • Pittsville), Julie Falk (Jr. • Mukwonago), Hollie Ozanich (Fr. • Green Bay), and Melissa Thies (So. • Slinnger) all scoring.

Like the shot put, the throwers had a firm grip on the scoring positions in the weight throw.  In fact, they swept the first six scoring positions. Sitek was the winner with a provisional qualifying throw of 53-1.  Masephol and Falk’s throws also exceeded the provisional qualifying standard when they threw 52-06 and 50-1 1/4.  Thies, Ozanich, and Cassidy Walsh (So. • Mauston) finished in positions fourth through sixth.

The Titans also showed their critical depth in the 800-meter run. Jessie Scheer (Sr. • De Pere) broke the 2:20 barrier for the first time in her career, and led a sweep of the first six scoring positions in the event.  Scheer’s time was 2:19.59, and she was followed closely by Heather Bassett (Fr. • Minocqua) and Jordan Clark-Mand (So. • Waupun) whose finishing times were 2:21.48 and 2:22.26, respectively.  Hope Scholze (Fr. • Melrose), Janelle Brooks (Fr. • Janesville), and Samantha Helgesen (Fr. • Bristol) completed the Titans sweep of the event as they took positions fourth through sixth.

Ayla Mitchell (Jr. • New Richmond) made it known to the rest of the country that she’s one of the top milers in the nation. Her time of 4:54.98 is currently the best time in the country at the distance, and automatically qualifies her for the national meet. Her last lap of 36 seconds displayed that she can mix endurance with speed.  Brittany Haas (Fr. • St. Charles, Ill.) ended up fifth in the event with a time of 5:24.22 and teammate Allison Gehl (Fr. • Sherwood) was close behind her in sixth place when she ran 5:27.02.

Even more depth was shown in the 5,000-meter run. Jenny Melville (Sr. • Waukesha) won the event with a time of 18:43.01.  Her teammates, Katie Wondra (Jr. • Campbellsport), Shannon Madigan (So. • Green Bay), and Cassie Peterson (Fr. • Marinette), took the second through fourth positions. Mallory Burk (Fr. • Athens) also managed to score in the 3,000-meter run.  She finished sixth with a time of 11:28.00.

The Titan jumpers scored major points in their distinct events. Anna Loveland (Fr. • Roscoe, Ill.) won the long jump with a jump of 17 06.25. Hannah Kussler (Fr. • Greendale) also jumped well in the event as she finished third with a long jump of 16-7.75.  Like Loveland, Kristi Konsella (Fr. • Merrill) also won her event, but she did so in the triple jump.  Her jump of 35-10.50 set the mark for the rest of the field.  Ellen Buchanan (Fr. • Chippewa Falls) managed to finish as the runner-up in the high jump with a jump of 5-9.75. Nicole VanEgtern (So. • Fond du Lac) led the way in the pole vault with a vault of 10-6. Three other Titans scored in the vault. Katie Kohn (Jr. • Mayville), Melissa Walsh (Fr. • Franklin), and Lindy Stein (Fr. • Kaukauna) finished fourth through sixth, respectively.

The sprints also went incredibly well for the Titans on Saturday. Camille Davis (Fr. • Green Bay) edged out Loveland in the 55-meter dash by a nose.  They both finished with times of 7.48. Konsella was fourth in the event with a time of 7.58.  Davis also placed well in the 200-meter dash. She finished second with a time of 26.19.  Chelsea Benitz (Fr. • Osceola) and Destiny Kafer (Fr. • Ripon) finished right behind Davis, in fourth and sixth place, with times of 27.45 and 27.84. Titans Take Second At UW-Stevens Point Invitational

Camille Davis Kristine Konsella Ayla Mitchell Ellie Sitek

The UW-Oshkosh women's track and field team can use their meet in Stevens Point as a learning experience for the championship season that they are about to embark on. It's safe to say that they're probably not ecstatic that they came in second place as a team to UW-Eau Claire, but the experience's they can take away from this meet will only help in the coming weeks. One thing to keep in mind is that the Titans have a lot of talented young athletes who will improve as the season wears on.

UW-Eau Claire narrowly edged the Titans in the team race by two points. UW-Eau Claire had 125 points, while UW-Oshkosh had 123. The University of Minnesota-Duluth and Winona State were close behind with 113 and 100 points, respectively.

Although the Titans know that they can perform better, that doesn't mean that there weren't great achievements to be found in a lot of different places on Saturday.

Two freshman led the Titans to fine performances in the sprints. Camille Davis (Fr. • Green Bay) almost came away with the victory in the 55-meter dash, but was narrowly edged by .01 seconds by Liz Caine of Stevens Point. Davis's finishing time was 7.43 seconds. Anna Loveland (Fr. • Roscoe, Ill.) was close behind Davis with a time of 7.58 seconds which was good enough for fourth place. Davis also sprinted well in the 200-meter dash. Her time of 26.58 seconds led her to a fifth-place finish. In the 55-meter hurdles, newcomer Andrea Fabiano (Fr. • Roscoe, Ill.) rounded out the scoring in the event with an eighth place finish, her time was 9.60 seconds.

The Titans are trying to repeat past success in the 400-meter dash by way of a youth movement. Kait Stockheimer (Fr. • West Allis), another freshman, ran to a strong finish in the event. Her time of 1:03.97 was good enough for sixth place, and a lot like the Davis and Loveland in the sprints, she'll look to continue to improve her times throughout the rest of the indoor season.

In the 800-meter run, UW-Oshkosh had great performances from many different runners. Ayla Mitchell (Jr. • New Richmond) continues her dominants at the half-mile distance winning her second 800 in as many meets. This time she had no problem pulling away from the rest of the field to finish with a time of 2:14.35. Her time is well under the provisional standard of 2:16.90. Jesse Scheer (Sr. • De Pere) also had a strong showing. After being boxed in early in the race, she finished with a quick last lap to obtain 5th place with a time of 2:22.22. Another freshman, was Heather Bassett (Fr. • Minocqua), finished right behind Scheer with a personal-best of 2:22.67.

Both Katie Wondra (Jr. • Cambellsport) and Jenny Piskor (Fr. • Eagan, Minn.) rounded out the 3000-meter run in scoring positions. They finished seventh and eighth, respectively, and finished with times of 11.03.49 and 11:04.45. Piskor is another talented freshman that the Titans will be counting on for the future. Jenny Melville (Sr. • Waukesha) finished with a time of 19:11.68 in the 5000 meters. After getting caught running by herself for the last mile of the 3.1 mile race, she still managed to hang on to a third place finish.

With a lot of their top runners injured for the relays, the Titans still managed to score points in both. An inexperienced 800-meter relay team of Davis, Fabiano, Kristi Konsella (Fr. • Merrill) and Loveland still hung on to a second place finish and a time of 1:48.23. The 1,600 meter relay team Mitchell, Scheer, Jordan Clark-Mand (So. • Waupun) and Bassett also offered a lot of fresh faces on it, but still finished fifth with a time of 4:09.68 in a tough field.

The jumping events offered scattered success for the Titans. In the long jump, Konsella led the way with a second-place finish. Her jump was 17-0 3/4 long. Konsella is another young competitor that these young Titans are counting on to lead them to a bright future. Amanda Bonn (Fr. • Sister Bay) also placed well for the Titans in the long jump. She finished in fifth place with a jump of 16-0 1/2. Hannah Kussler (Fr. • Greendale) jumped well, placing fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 34-10 1/4 and eighth in the long jump with a mark of 15-9 3/4.

Like Kussler, Becky Thomas (Jr. • Mineral Point) also finished in second place, but Thomas did so in the high jump. Her best jump for the day was 5-1. In the pole vault, Katie Kohn (Jr. • Mayville) placed with a vault of 10-0, which was good enough for fourth place. Melissa Walsh (Fr. • Franklin) also placed for UW-Oshkosh in the vault. She finished seventh with a vault of 9-0.

The throws continue to be a dominating presence on the UW-Oshkosh women track team. The faces may change, but the positive results remain. The Titans had three female's place in the shot put. Leading the way was Peggy Seidler (Fr. • Merrill) in fourth place. Her throw of 34-2 was a provisional qualifying mark. Ellie Sitek (So. • Marinette) also threw a provisional mark with a toss of 42-7 1/2. Her best throw was good for sixth place. Hollie Ozanich (Fr. • Green Bay) rounded out the Titan scoring in the event by finishing eighth. Her longest throw went 39-9 1/2.

The domination continued in the 20-pound weight throw as three more Titan women scored, and two more threw provisional standards. Sitek led the way with a second place finish. Her throw of 53-9 3/4 was a provisional qualifier. Rebecca Masephol (Sr. • Pittsville), also threw for a provisional mark at 50-0 1/2, not to mention finishing in sixth place. Susie Trzebiatowski (So. • Rosholt) rounded out the Titan scoring by finishing in eighth place. Her throw went for 49-1.
