Gilbert Receives NCAA All-America Distinction
Carrie Gilbert became the first NCAA Division III

program when she gained mention as a 2001 second team honoree.
Gilbert, a junior defender from Neenah,
was one of 33 players receiving NCAA Division III All-America accolades
by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), with
11 players named to each of the first, second and third teams. Also
obtaining NCAA Division III All-America recognition from the WIAC
was UW-Stevens Point senior midfielder Mickey Jacob.
Gilbert, who received NCAA Division
III All-Central Region and All-WIAC honors in 2000 and 2001, spearheaded
a UW-Oshkosh defense this past season that allowed just 12 goals
in 17 matches. Appearing in all 17 matches, including 16 as a starter,
Gilbert helped UW-Oshkosh shutout nine opponents, the second-highest
total in the WIAC, and limit six others to just one goal. Gilbert
had two goals for the Titans this past year, both on penalty kicks.

College followed with four honorees, while the University of St.
Thomas and Wheaton College had three each.
Gilbert, the first two-time all-region
selection in the nine-year history of the UW-Oshkosh women's soccer
program, spearheaded a defense that allowed just 12 goals in the
Titans' 17 matches played this past season. She also was instrumental
in helping UW-Oshkosh shutout nine opponents, the second-highest
total in the WIAC, and limiting six others to just one goal. Gilbert
had two goals for the Titans this past year, both on penalty kicks.
In 2000, Gilbert had three goals, including two on penalty kicks.
Like Gilbert, Rau played in 17 matches
for UW-Oshkosh this past season. She ranked fourth on the team with
five goals and fifth on the squad with 10 points. Rau had the match-winning
goal twice during UW-Oshkosh's 13 victories, highlighted by the
Titans' 2-0 win over UW-Stout on September 28. In 2000, Rau had
five goals and five assists for 15 points.

22 goals and five assists to lead the WIAC in both goals scored
and points. She became just the second player in UW-Stevens Point
history to score over 20 goals in a season. Mory was the backbone
of UW-Stevens Point's record-tying defense and was a key reason
that the Pointers allowed just 18 corner kick opportunities in 20
matches this season. Schmitt was also a key to the defense that
allowed opponents just 5.8 shots per match.

offense from her midfield area.
UW-River Falls Amy Gilfillan
was the scoring leader for the Falcons this season, ranking second
in the league in goals (14) and third in points (30).
Nellie Sivertsen helped UW-Stout to
the most wins in school history this season at 10-9-1. She led the
Blue Devils in points (27) and goals (11). Sivertsen holds the Blue
Devil career records for points (76) and goals (32).

during the 2001 campaign, while UW-Plattevilles Jessi Jones
led the Pioneers with 12 points and five goals.
UW-Stevens Point head coach Sheila
Miech was named the Coach of the Year by her peers, marking the
second-consecutive season and fifth time in her 15-year career she
has won the honor. Miech has led the Pointers to nine WIAC Championships.

Penalty Kicks End Season For Titans
It took 120 minutes and eight rounds of penalty kicks,
but UW-Eau Claire finally outlasted UW-Oshkosh in the semifinals of
the WIAC Women's Soccer Tournament held Friday (October 26) in Stevens
Point.
After 90 minutes of regulation and 30 minutes
of sudden death overtime, the teams advanced to a shootout. After
five rounds of penalty kicks, the teams were still tied (4-4) before
the Blugolds finally won after three rounds of sudden death penalty
shots.
UW-Eau Claire's Maleia Damato finished
with the eventual match-winning kick after shooting first in the
eighth round. UW-Oshkosh's Katy Werginz then fired over the top
of the goal as the Blugolds earned the right to advance to the tournament
finals for the seventh time in the 10-year history of the event.
Three goals were scored in the first
15 minutes of the match before UW-Oshkosh tied the contest with
9:18 left in regulation. Freshman Karin Reinke had a corner kick
that freshman Melissa Gruber put in to tie the match for the Titans.
Gruber had an outstanding chance to win the match on a breakaway
with one minute left in regulation, but Blugolds' goalie Erin Leschensky
made the save. UW-Oshkosh's other goal was scored by junior Sarah
Schultz, counting at the 14:33 mark of the first half. Schultz ended
the year totaling a team-high seven goals, while Gruber had six.
UW-Eau Claire, which lost 1-0 in double

Titans, 19-11. The match was the fifth penalty kick shootout in
the 10-year history of the WIAC Tournament. With the match being
counted as a tie for both teams, UW-Oshkosh ends the season with
its fewest losses in school history. During the past two years UW-Oshkosh
has fashioned a 28-7-1 record.

Titans Snip Feathers Off Red Hawks
With advantages of 36-1 in shots and 15-0 in corner
kicks, the statistics would indicate that the UW-Oshkosh women's soccer
team had an easy time with Ripon College on Wednesday (October 17)
at the Kolf Sports Center Complex. But when the match ended, however,
the statistics didn't reveal the whole story as the Titans edged the
visiting Red Hawks (4-10) by just a 2-0 score.
UW-Oshkosh, 11-3 and ranked sixth in
the NCAA Division III Central Region, scored quickly against its
neighboring rival as sophomore Lindsay Rau tallied her fourth goal
of the season just 1:39 into the match. UW-Oshkosh's one-goal lead
held up until senior Erin O'Driscoll scored at the 79:01 mark of
the second half. The goal was O'Driscoll's first of the season,
coming in the last regular season home match of her career.
UW-Oshkosh's win was the ninth in its
last 10 matches, with the only blemish being a 4-0 setback to nationally-ranked
and WIAC rival UW-Stevens Point on October 10. The Titans now lead
Ripon College in the all-time series by a 5-3 count. |

women's soccer team proved that it still has the loudest bark among
league combatants as it defeated UW-Oshkosh, 4-0, on Wednesday (October
10) at the Kolf Sports Center Complex. The four-time defending WIAC
champion Pointers have now won 50 consecutive matches against league
