UW-Oshkosh players voted by league coaches

Starting all 22 matches for UW-Oshkosh this past

Titans' Unbeaten
Streak
Ends In WIAC Tournament Final
|
The WIAC Tournament brings out the best in the
UW-Stevens Point womens soccer team and it did so again this season as the
Pointers won their eighth straight league tournament and 12th in the 13-year history
of the event with a 1-0 win over UW-Oshkosh on Saturday (Nov. 6) in Stevens Point.
The win qualifies for the Pointers for the
NCAA Division III Tournament, which begins on Wednesday (Nov. 10).
However, the wins
havent been getting any easier for the
Pointers, who held off a furious Titans
rally in the final minutes to earn the victory.
UW-Stevens Point scored the only goal of the match
off its only corner kick of the second half, coming with under 34 minutes remaining.
Katie OLearys kick was battled for the penalty box and collected by
Alyssa Souza, who passed to Melissa Becker for a header that hit off the crossbar
and off the hands of diving UW-Oshkosh goalie Christine Barutha (Jr. • Brookfield),
landing in the back of the net for the only score of the match.
The Pointers went
on the defensive from that point and stopped
several good scoring chances for the Titans, who
had six corner kicks in the second half. Their
best chance was saved by Pointers goalie
Meredith DeCaluwe on a close range shot in the
final minute.
There were limited scoring opportunities in the
match, but they were nearly all quality chances. Both teams had solid opportunities
in the first half as Barutha and DeCaluwe both made leaping saves and UW-Stevens
Point had another shot rocket off the crossbar. However, the shots were limited
as UW-Oshkosh held an 8-7 advantage for the match. DeCaluwe made three saves and
Barutha had four saves.
Nicole Kunick (Jr. • Green Bay) took five
of UW-Oshkosh's eight shots, while Melissa Gruber (Jr. • Oak Creek), Maggie
Hoffman (Fr. • Waukesha) and Michelle John (So. • Whitefish Bay) fired
one each.
The victory was
UW-Stevens Points eighth consecutive and
their 22nd straight conference tournament win as
it improved to 15-4-1 overall. The Pointers are
now 34-1 all-time in the tournament and won by
one goal for the sixth time in their 12 title
match wins, including their fifth by a 1-0 count.
It marked the fourth time UW-Stevens Point has
not allowed a goal in the tournament after
blanking UW-River Falls 1-0 in the semifinals.
UW-Oshkosh had a
school-record 10-match unbeaten streak snapped
and tied a school record for victories, finishing
15-4-3 overall.

Titans Top Blue
Devils To
Advance To WIAC Tournament Final
After
a first half that featured a frantic flurry of
goals, UW-Oshkosh finally took control over
UW-Stout and advanced to the championship game of
the WIAC Women's Soccer Tournament with a 5-3
victory over the Blue Devils on Friday (Nov. 5)
in Stevens Point.
The Titans
(15-3-3) extended their unbeaten streak to a
school-record 10 straight matches with the win
and will take on host UW-Stevens Point (14-4-1)
in the title match on Saturday (Nov. 6) at 1 p.m.
UW-Oshkosh had lost in the semifinals of the
tournament the past four years and is led by
first-year coach Erin Leinweber, who played on
UW-Stevens Point's 1994 and 1995 WIAC
championship teams. The Pointers have qualified
for all 13 tournament championship matches and
have won seven straight titles. The winner of
Saturday's match advances to the NCAA Division
III Championship.
By halftime, UW-Oshkosh and UW-Stout (13-3-2) had
already combined for the highest-scoring match in
the semifinal or final round of the WIAC
Tournament with a 3-3 stalemate. UW-Stout's three
goals were the highest for a losing team in any
WIAC Tournament contest.
In a 33-minute span from the 19th minute to the
52nd minute, the teams scored seven goals,
including one at least every eight minutes.
UW-Oshkosh jumped out to a 2-0 lead with goals
four minutes apart as Nicole Kunick (Jr.
Green Bay) scored on a breakaway and Melissa
Gruber (Jr. Oak Creek) headed in a corner
kick. Four minutes later, UW-Stout also scored a
pair of goals four minutes apart as Carrie
Schrank blasted an open shot from 15 yards out
and Shannon Hermes headed in a cross just inside
the post.
The scoring outbreak continued less than five
minutes later when UW-Oshkosh regained the lead
as Nikki Goes (So. Mokena, Ill.) slid a
pass through the defense that Mandy Vinje (Fr.
Madison) collected and finished on a wide
open shot. The Blue Devils tied the match just
before halftime when Hermes made a nifty move
around a Titan defender and scored with 27
seconds left, giving UW-Stout apparent momentum
heading into halftime.
However, the Titans controlled the second half,
firing five shots in the first seven minutes,
including the go-ahead goal by Kunick, who scored
on a breakaway similar to her first goal off a
long pass from Maggie Hoffman (Fr.
Waukesha). Melissa Ballweg kept the Blue Devils
in the match with 13 saves, including 10 in the
second half. The Titans added an insurance goal
with 5:17 left when Kunick headed a ball to
Gruber, who scored for the second time in the
match.
UW-Stout managed two shots in the final four
minutes as the Titans held a 16-2 advantage on
shots in the second half and 28-7 for the match.
UW-Oshkosh, which
matched a school single-season record with its
15th win, played to a 2-2 double overtime tie
with UW-Stout on Oct. 24.

Titans, Bluejays
Unable To Settle Argument
The UW-Oshkosh
and Elmhurst College (Ill.) women's soccer teams failed
to resolve their dispute as they battled to a scoreless
double overtime tie on Saturday (Oct. 30) at Titan
Stadium.
UW-Oshkosh (13-3-3), which
played to a 2-2 draw with UW-Stout in its last outing
(Oct. 24), had to settle for its second consecutive tie
despite taking nearly three times as many shots as
Elmhurst College (11-5-2). The Titans outshot the
Bluejays, 23-8, as they posted advantages of 11-3 in the
first half, 7-2 in the second period and 5-3 in the two
overtime frames.
Elmhurst College
goalkeeper Amy LeFurgy was the star of the match for the
Bluejays as she halted 15 UW-Oshkosh shots, including
five in the extra sessions.
UW-Oshkosh goalkeepers Christine Barutha (Jr. •
Brookfield) and Ashley Dalton (Fr. • West Bend) were relatively quiet in
the match as they combined for six saves. Dalton replaced an injured Barutha in
the 53rd minute of the contest and helped preserve UW-Oshkosh's sixth shutout
in seven games by stopping three Elmhurst College shots. Dalton had two of her
saves in overtime.
UW-Oshkosh returns to
action on Tuesday (Nov. 2) by hosting UW-Whitewater
(9-8-1) in the first round of the WIAC Tournament. The
winner of Tuesday's 2 p.m. match advances to play
UW-Stevens Point (12-4-1) or UW-Stout (13-2-2) in the
semifinals on Friday (Nov. 5) in Stevens Point.
Titans, Blue
Devils Play To Tie
The UW-Oshkosh
women's soccer team took three times as many shots as
UW-Stout, but had to settle for a 2-2 double overtime tie
with the Blue Devils on Sunday (Oct. 24) at Titan
Stadium.
The tie between UW-Oshkosh
(13-3-2) and UW-Stout (12-2-2) gave the 2004 WIAC
championship to UW-Stevens Point (12-4-1), which
concluded its eight-game league schedule with a 7-1
record. UW-Oshkosh, which finished WIAC play with a 5-1-2
record, currently occupies second place in the league
standings. The Titans will drop to third place in the
WIAC standings if UW-Stout defeats UW-Platteville on
Friday (Oct. 29). The Blue Devils are listed third in the
WIAC rankings with their 5-1-1 league mark.
UW-Oshkosh outshot
UW-Stout, 22-7, including 9-4 in the first half and 11-1
in the second. Both teams attempted two shots in
overtime.
UW-Oshkosh, which has gone 7-2-2 in its previous
11 meetings with UW-Stout, grabbed a 1-0 lead over the Blue Devils as
Katy Werginz (So. Waupaca) scored just 6:19 into play. Werginz
scored her 10th goal of the season on assists by Maggie Hoffman (Fr.
Waukesha) and Jessie Hoffman (Fr. Waukesha).
UW-Stout answered back
almost immediately as Chelsey Seawell took a pass from
Carrie Schrank and scored just 44 seconds later. The Blue
Devils took the lead at the 30:09 mark of the contest
when Heidi Schultz put home a rebounded shot off a corner
kick.
UW-Stout held its one-goal
advantage until UW-Oshkosh's Nicole Kunick (Jr.
Green Bay) scored at the 57:03 mark of the match.
Kunick's goal, her team-leading 12th of the season, was
assisted by Jessie Hoffman and Michelle John (So.
Whitefish Bay).
UW-Stout scored what
appeared to be the winning goal in the final minute of
overtime, but the Blue Devils were ruled to be offside
and the goal by Shannon Hermes was disallowed.
UW-Stout goalkeeper
Melissa Ballweg recorded 13 saves in the contest, while
UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Christine Barutha (Jr.
Brookfield) tallied four. UW-Stout's first goal of the
match ended a string of 522 consecutive scoreless minutes
for Barutha.
Titans Net
Eagles
Christine
Barutha (Jr. Brookfield) kept the goal she guards
clean for the fifth straight match as the UW-Oshkosh
women's soccer team tripped UW-La Crosse, 2-0, on
Saturday (Oct. 23) at Titan Stadium.
Barutha extended her
string of consecutive shutout minutes to 515 by stopping
five of UW-La Crosse's (11-5-1/4-4 WIAC) 12 shots.
Barutha's performance over the last five-plus matches has
lowered her goals against average on the season to 1.01.
UW-Oshkosh (13-3-1/5-1-1
WIAC) remained alive for a second-place finish in the
league standings by scoring both of its goals against
UW-La Crosse in the second half. The Titans broke a
scoreless debate with the Eagles on Stacy Stroud's (Jr.
New Berlin) goal at the 62:10 mark of the contest.
UW-Oshkosh increased its advantage to 2-0 when Katy
Werginz (So. Waupaca) scored at the 74:12 mark of
the contest.
UW-Oshkosh took 18 shots
in the match, including six that were stopped by UW-La
Crosse goalkeeper Stephanie Harbaugh. The Titans also had
a slim 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
UW-Oshkosh, which defeated
UW-La Crosse for the fourth time in five meetings, can
secure a second-place finish in the 2004 WIAC race by
defeating UW-Stout (12-2-1/5-1 WIAC) on Sunday (Oct. 24)
at Titan Stadium.
Titans Enjoy
Another Win Over The Pioneers
The UW-Oshkosh
women's soccer team remained perfect in 12 matches
against UW-Platteville following its 2-0 victory over the
Pioneers on Tuesday (Oct. 19) in Platteville. It was
UW-Oshkosh's ninth straight shutout of UW-Platteville,
with the Pioneers last scoring in a 2-1 loss to the
Titans in 1995.
Mindy Vinje (Fr.
Madison) gave UW-Oshkosh (12-3-1/4-1-1 WIAC) a 1-0 lead
with her goal at the 31:19 mark of the contest. Vinje's
goal, the first of her career, was assisted by Jessica
Hoffman (Fr. Waukesha).
UW-Platteville (7-11/1-6
WIAC), which had lost its previous two matches by 1-0
counts to UW-La Crosse and UW-River Falls, remained
within one goal of UW-Oshkosh until the Titans' Michelle
John (So. Whitefish Bay) scored on a penalty kick
with 12 minutes left to play. John's goal was her fifth
of the season.
UW-Oshkosh outshot
UW-Platteville, 28-2, and posted a 13-1 advantage in
corner kicks. UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Christine Barutha
(Jr. Brookfield) extended her string of
consecutive shutout minutes to 425 without needing to
make a save.
UW-Platteville goalkeeper
Laurie Trifone kept the score close by stopping 16
UW-Oshkosh shots.
Titans
Victorious In Titan Stadium Debut
The UW-Oshkosh
women's soccer team made its inaugural appearance at
Titan Stadium a successful one as it defeated first-time
opponent Carroll College, 2-0, on Sunday (Oct. 17).
UW-Oshkosh, which is
scheduled to play two of its three remaining home
contests of the 2004 season at Titan Stadium, will move
to its home matches to the 9,800-seat facility on a
permanent basis beginning next fall. With exception of a
few games at Schumerth Field, UW-Oshkosh has played all
of its home matches during the past 11-plus seasons at
the Kolf Sports Center Complex.
Against Carroll College
(11-2-1), UW-Oshkosh (11-3-1) broke a scoreless battle on
Nicole Kunick's (Jr. Green Bay) goal at the 31:43
mark of the contest. Kunick's team-leading 11th goal of
the season was assisted by Maggie Hoffman (Fr.
Waukesha) and Katy Werginz (So. Waupaca).
The Titans held their
one-goal advantage until Kristen Malmstrom (Jr.
Brookfield) scored with just 48 seconds left in the
contest. Assisting on Malmstrom's first goal of the
season were Kunick and Karin Reinke (Sr. Green
Bay).
UW-Oshkosh outshot Carroll
College, 11-4, with goalkeeper Sarah McLaughlin of the
Pioneers stopping seven attempts and goalkeeper Christine
Barutha (Jr. Brookfield) of the Titans four.
Titans Conquer
Spartans
Maggie Hoffman

Dana Gudel (Fr. Middleton) once as the UW-Oshkosh
women's soccer team defeated Aurora University (Ill.),
3-0, on Saturday (Oct. 16) at the Kolf Sports Center
Complex.
Hoffman put UW-Oshkosh
(10-3-1) ahead 1-0 with her unassisted goal just 4:50
into play. The Titans extended their lead to 2-0 on
Gudel's unassisted goal during the 24th minute of the
match. Five minutes later, Hoffman counted her second
goal of the contest after receiving passes from Kristi
Olejnik (Sr. Elm Grove) and Stacy Stroud (Jr.
New Berlin).
UW-Oshkosh fired 18 shots
in the match, with Hoffman scoring her fifth and sixth
goals of the season and Gudel her first. Aurora
University (7-8-1) took just seven shots in the contest,
but five of them had to be saved by UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper
Christine Barutha (Jr. Brookfield). The Titans had
four of their shots stopped by Aurora University
goalkeeper Alicia Martin.
It was the fourth meeting
between UW-Oshkosh and Aurora University, with the Titans
tying the all-time series at 2-2. Saturday's victory also
clinched UW-Oshkosh's fifth straight 10-plus win season.
Titans Swat
Yellowjackets
Stacy Stroud

Titans Edge
Blugolds On Kunick's Late Goal
Nicole Kunick's
(Jr. Green Bay) goal with just under five minutes
to play lifted the UW-Oshkosh women's soccer team to a
2-1 victory over UW-Eau Claire on Friday (Oct. 1) in Eau
Claire.
Kunick's match-winning
tally came at the 85:26 mark of the contest as she
dribbled through the UW-Eau Claire defense and found the
back of the net with her shot. The goal was Kunick's
team-leading eighth of the season.
UW-Oshkosh (6-2-1/2-1-1
WIAC) took a 1-0 lead just 9:23 into the contest when
Katy Werginz (So. Waupaca) got a hold of a loose

WIAC) tied the match at 1-1 when Becky Sitter scored at
the 48:19 mark of the contest.
UW-Oshkosh outshot UW-Eau
Claire, 13-9, but was on the short end of a 7-4 count in
corner kicks.
UW-Oshkosh has won its
last two meetings with UW-Eau Claire, including a 3-1
decision a year ago. The Blugolds, however, lead the
all-time series by a 12-3-1 tally.
Titans Off To
2-0 Start
The UW-Oshkosh women's soccer team is off to a 2-0 start
for the fifth time in the program's 12-year history following wins over Calvin
College (Mich.) and Albion College (Mich.) this past weekend in Bloomington, Ill.
UW-Oshkosh defeated Calvin College by a 2-1 overtime score on Friday (Sept. 3)
and Albion College by a 4-1 count on Saturday (Sept. 4) to copy 2-0 starts in
1995, 2000, 2001 and 2003. Only twice have the Titans begun a season with a 3-0
record, 2000 and 2003.
UW-Oshkosh, which has never started a season with four straight wins, resumes
play with matches at The College of St. Catherine (0-1) on Saturday (Sept. 11)
and the College of St. Benedict (1-1) on Sunday (Sept. 12).
The Titans' home opener is scheduled for Sept. 17 against defending WIAC champion
UW-River Falls. With exception of an Oct. 17 contest at Titan Stadium against
Carroll College, all UW-Oshkosh home matches are being held at the Kolf Sports
Center Complex.
Titans Picked To
Finish Third In WIAC Derby
The UW-Oshkosh women's
soccer team is picked to finish third in this year's WIAC
race, according to the league's nine sports information
directors.
UW-Stevens Point, which has won the conference title 10
times in the last 12 seasons, is favored to capture this
year's league championship. Defending champion UW-River
Falls is predicted to finish second and UW-La Crosse
fourth.
First-year head coach Erin Leinweber inherits a
UW-Oshkosh program that returns five starters from last
year's team that posted a 14-5-2 record and finished
third in the WIAC with a 5-2-1 mark. UW-Oshkosh's most
heralded returnee is Karin Reinke, a senior midfielder
who received NCAA Division III All-Central Region third
team and All-WIAC first team honors a year ago.
UW-Oshkosh opens its 2004 season this weekend in
Bloomington, Ill., by playing matches on Friday (Sept. 3)
against Calvin College and Saturday (Sept. 4) against
Albion College.
2004 Season
Preview
With
a new head coach and the inheritance of five
starters and three reserves from last year's
squad that posted a 14-5-2 record (5-2-1 WIAC),
the UW-Oshkosh women's soccer team enters the
2004 season looking to continue its development
and ascent within the WIAC.
Last
fall, UW-Oshkosh recorded 13-plus wins for the
third time in four seasons and came within
seconds of claiming a share of the WIAC
championship. UW-Oshkosh tallied the
second-highest victory count in school history a
year ago by yielding just 11 goals and shutting
out 12 of its 21 opponents. The Titans lost all
five of their matches by one goal last season,
including a contest with 14 seconds left in
double overtime to eventual WIAC champion
UW-River Falls. UW-Oshkosh also played scoreless
ties a year ago with perennial NCAA Division III
powers UW-Stevens Point and Wheaton College
(Ill.).
UW-Oshkosh's maturation
process and mission will be guided this fall by former All-WIAC
standout Erin Leinweber. Leinweber, an Oshkosh native who helped
UW-Stevens Point to a pair of WIAC championships as a player in
the mid-1990s, comes to UW-Oshkosh from North Park University (Ill.),
where she served as the school's head women's soccer coach the past
three seasons.
A
good combination of experience, youth and depth
will serve as key components for Leinweber's
first UW-Oshkosh team. Expected to lead this
year's UW-Oshkosh squad are returning starters
Michelle John (21 starts), Nicole Kunick (21
starts), Kristen Malmstrom (20 starts), Karin
Reinke (21 starts) and Stacy Stroud (21 starts)
and 2003 letter winners Christine Barutha (1
start), Nikki Goes and Kristi Olejnik. Providing
additional leadership to this year's squad is
Melissa Gruber, who sat out the 2003 season after
starting 36 of a possible 38 matches for the
Titans over the 2001 and 2002 campaigns.
Reinke
(Sr. Green Bay), a midfielder, is
UW-Oshkosh's most heralded returning performer.
Last season, Reinke received NCAA Division III
All-Central Region third team and All-WIAC first
team honors after scoring 20 points on eight
goals and four assists. Reinke counted four goals
and five assists for the Titans in 2002 and six
goals and six assists in 2001. She has started 47
of UW-Oshkosh's 59 matches the past three
seasons.
Kunick
(Jr. Green Bay), a forward, was
UW-Oshkosh's top scorer last season, compiling 24
points on a team-best 11 goals and two assists.
She had four goals and one assist for the Titans
in 2002.
Midfielders
John (So. Whitefish Bay) and Stroud (Jr.
New Berlin) both tallied five goals last
season to rank third on the team behind Kunick
and Reinke. John also contributed three assists a
year ago and Stroud one. Stroud recorded one goal
for UW-Oshkosh in 2002.
Malmstrom
(Jr. Brookfield), a defender, played a key
role in UW-Oshkosh holding last year's opponents
to less than one goal per match. Malmstrom has
scored one goal for the Titans in each of the
past two seasons.
Barutha
(Jr. Brookfield), a goalkeeper, compiled a
0.79 goals against average last year after
allowing three goals in nearly 340 minutes in the
net. Barutha started five contests for UW-Oshkosh
in 2002, posting a 0.19 goals against average on
the year after yielding just one goal in nearly
483 minutes played. Olejnik (Sr. Elm Grove), a
midfielder, had two goals and three assists for
the Titans last year and one goal and one assist
in 2002. Goes (So. Mokena, Ill.), a
midfielder, had one goal in her limited playing
time a year ago.
Gruber
(Jr. Oak Creek), a midfielder, brings
thrust to the UW-Oshkosh attack. She registered
nine goals and two assists for the Titans in 2002
and six goals and six assists in 2001. Gruber
ranked second on the team in goals both seasons.
Another
past letter winner returning to the Titans this
season is Katy Werginz (So. Waupaca).
Werginz, a forward, rejoins UW-Oshkosh this year
after sitting out the 2002 and 2003 seasons. In
2001, she had five goals and three assists.
UW-Oshkosh's
list of newcomers is led by freshmen Katie Cobb
of De Pere, Dana Gudel of Middleton, sisters
Jessie and Maggie Hoffman of Waukesha South,
Kendall Hugel of Cary Grove (Ill.), Kristyn
Piotrowski of Stevens Point and Mindy Vinje of
Madison La Follette high schools.
