2010 Trip

May 15, 2007

Today was an early day.  We had to roll out of bed at 8 o’clock to go and eat a fantastic breakfast, which included every fruit imaginable.  Shortly after breakfast we took off and headed towards the volcano.  On the way we had to stop, on one of the city roads, to let the drunk local laying the middle of the street to be dragged off to the side.  After he was cleared from the road we proceeded to the volcano!  The flowers that lined the rural roads were full of color and wonderful fragrance.  On our journey to the top of this volcano, we stopped to look at a 2-toed sloth that was hanging on a telephone line.  Once we reached the top, we had to hike to the actual crater of the volcano.  Looking into the crater was magnificent, you could see (and SMELL) the gases that this very volcano was emitting.  After the crater we took another hike to an old crater that was now a lake and surrounded by a vast forest.  This was definitely a Kodak moment, and we took advantage of it!

We then hiked back to the bus and headed to lunch.  Lunch was delicious, except for the dead fly that Matzke found in her strawberry icy.  Once lunch was over we headed back to our hotel to rest up for our first big game.  Just as we all laid down for a nap, the clouds rolled in and brought a storm along with them.  It then rained, hard, for a long time, resulting in the cancellation of our game.  The fields we were supposed to play on were submerged in water and it would have been impossible to play. Everyone was pretty disappointed, but you can’t fight Mother Nature.  I’m sure it would have been a great game considering the appearance of our opponents, big and muscular!

After our game cancellation we all returned to our hotel for another delicious meal.   The meal was traditional Costa Rican style: beans, rice, and your choice of chicken, beef, steak, or fish.  After dinner we all just hung out and played cards, enjoying one another’s company in such a beautiful place!  As the night wore on, people slowly made their way to bed, since breakfast was going to come fast at 7 a.m. the next morning!
