Women's Softball Team To Hold Informational
Meeting
The UW-Oshkosh women's softball team will hold a
mandatory informational meeting for all new and returning players
on Thursday, Sept. 4 in room 135 of Kolf Sports Center. The meeting
begins at 8 p.m.
All candidates for the 2009 team should bring their
Titan ID card to the meeting. New players must have all of their
athletic training information completed, which includes a health
history questionnaire, a physical exam and health insurance form.

All athletic training information and a copy your insurance card
(front and back) should also be brought to the meeting.

Titans' Stampfli Pitches Against
Team USA
Ronessa Stampfli, who completed her UW-Oshkosh women’s
softball career this past spring, pitched two innings against
Team USA on June 17 at Zenoff Park in Stevens Point.
More than 2,500 people were in attendance to watch the 2008 USA
Olympic women’s softball team continue its “Bound
4 Beijing Tour” with a game against the Midwest All-Stars.
The Midwest All-Stars consisted of NCAA Division I, II and III
players from Wisconsin and Minnesota. Laura Van Abel and Korryn
Brooks of UW-Stevens Point and Jill Janke and Casey Leisgang of
UW-Eau Claire were also members of the Midwest All-Stars.
Stampfli allowed just one earned run as Team USA topped the Midwest
All-Stars, 20-1. She gave up five hits and walked one batter.
Stampfli recorded the only strikeout of a Team USA player when
she fanned Caitlin Lowe to end the third inning. Lowe was a four-time
NCAA Division I All-American at the University of Arizona.
Team USA opened the contest with five runs in the first inning,
including a three-run home run by Andrea Duran. After single runs
in the second and third innings, Team USA increased its lead to
13-0 with six runs in the fourth.
Vicky Galindo added a two-run double in the bottom of the fifth
inning to put Team USA up, 20-0. The Midwest All-Stars got on
the board in the sixth inning after a runner was placed on third
base to begin the frame. The team’s lone run scored on a
sacrifice fly by Brooks.
Team USA totaled 19 hits in the contest, including three from
both Natasha Watley and Lowe. The Olympic squad improved its record
to 46-1 on its warm-up tour. The Midwest All-Stars were held to
just two hits, singles by Leisgang and Chelsea Rosenow.
Monica Abbott, the NCAA’s all-time strikeout
leader, earned the victory for Team USA after pitching all 6.1
innings. She struck out 13 batters. Leah Vanevenhoven pitched
the first two innings for the Midwest All-Stars and took the loss
after allowing six runs and five hits.
Stampfli posted a 19-4 record and a 1.28 earned run average for
UW-Oshkosh this past season. The Brodhead native registered seven
shutouts and struck out 262 batters in 164.1 innings pitched.
Stampfli also pitched the 2005, 2006 and 2007 seasons for UW-Oshkosh.
Her career totals include a 75-27 record and a 1.00 earned run
average in 691.2 innings pitched. Stampfli, who received NCAA
Division III All-America first team honors by the National Fastpitch
Coaches Association in 2007, ranks seventh in NCAA Division III
history with 1,019 career strikeouts.

Stampfli to Face Team USA

pitcher Ronessa Stampfli (Brodhead) will be a member of the Midwest
All-Star Team, which takes on the 2008 USA Olympic softball squad
on Tuesday (June 17) in Stevens Point.
Team USA is currently on its “Bound 4 Beijing Tour,”
a 46-city nationwide trip to get ready for the Olympic Games in
August. The tour, which runs from February to July, plays 62 games
in 23 different states. Team USA stops in Stevens Point for the
fourth time, and more than 2,500 fans are expected for the game
at Zenoff Park.
The Olympic Softball Team currently holds a 43-1 record on the
tour, with the only loss coming via a 1-0 decision to Virginia
Tech University on March 26. Team USA consists of many well-known
players including Jennie Finch, Monica Abbott, Crystal Bustos
and Cat Osterman.
Stampfli held a pitching record of 19-4 in 2008 and struck out
262 batters in 164.1 innings while posting a 1.28 earned run average.
In 24 starts on the mound, Stampfli threw 20 complete games and
seven shutouts. Opponents batted just .164 against her and her
11.2 strikeouts per seven innings listed third in the NCAA Division
III.
Other members of the Midwest All-Star team include Laura Van Abel
and Korryn Brooks of UW-Stevens Point and Jill Janke and Casey
Leisgang of UW-Eau Claire. The squad also includes players from
NCAA Division I, II and III schools such as the universities of
Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Five Titans Receive All-Region Accolades

Led
by First Team selection Ronessa Stampfli (Sr. • Brodhead),
the UW-Oshkosh softball team placed five players on the 2008
Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association
Great Lakes All-Region Team. Catcher Dani Olsen (Sr. •
Verona), outfielder Whitney Tornow (So. • Neenah) and
pitcher Amy Sullivan (Sr. • Oshkosh) earned Second Team
honors while outfielder Amie Heinzelman (So. • Monroe)
made the Third Team.
Stampfli held a pitching record of 19-4 in 2008 and struck
out 262 batters in 164.1 innings while posting a 1.28 earned
run average. In 24 starts on the mound, Stampfli threw 20
complete games and seven shutouts. She also earned two saves
and opponents batted just .164 against her. Her 11.2 strikeouts
per seven innings listed third in the NCAA Division III.
Stampfli allowed just one earned run while striking out 18
batters in a 4-2 win against Bethel College. Her 17 strikeouts
in a 10-inning complete game led the Titans to a 4-3 victory
over Marian College. Stampfli also threw a one-hitter with
15 strikeouts in a 1-0 win against UW-Stout.
Stampfli posted a 17-4 record with a 1.01 earned run average
in 2005. She threw four shutouts and struck out 186 batters
in 138 innings. In 2006, Stampfli went 20-11 in 196.1 innings
of work. Her earned run average was 0.89 while her 294 strikeouts
set a WIAC record.
An
earned run average of 0.87 highlighted Stampfli’s 2007
campaign. She finished with a 19-8 record and struck out 277
batters in 193 innings. Ten of Stampfli’s 30 career
shutouts came in 2007. In her four years at UW-Oshkosh, Stampfli
owned a 75-27 record with an earned run average of 1.00. She
recorded 1,019 strikeouts, the seventh-highest total in NCAA
Division III history, in 691.2 innings pitched.
Olsen, who started all 43 games for the Titans this season,
was second on the team with a .368 batting average. She homered
four times and drove in 21 runs. Olsen’s 33 runs ranked
second on UW-Oshkosh, while her 26 sacrifices led the Titans.
She also hit eight doubles and recorded a team-high 11 stolen
bases.
Olsen came up big when it mattered most, going 4-for-4 with
three runs batted in as the Titans clinched the WIAC Tournament
title with a 9-1 win against UW-River Falls. She knocked in
five runs and homered twice in UW-Oshkosh’s 8-0 victory
over the University of Chicago. In a 10-1 win against UW-Superior,
Olsen recorded three hits, three runs batted in and two runs
scored.
In 2005, Olsen started 37 games for the Titans and finished
with a .213 batting average. She batted in seven runs and
went a perfect 9-for-9 on stolen base attempts. Olsen batted
.277 with seven runs batted in while starting 44 games in
2006.
Continuing the trend of increasing her batting average each
year, Olsen hit .291 in 2007. She knocked in four runs and
stole 10 bases while starting 32 contests. For her career,
Olsen owned a .292 batting average, 39 runs batted in and
38 stolen bases in 164 games played.
Tornow topped UW-Oshkosh at the plate in 2008 with a .429
batting average, seven home runs and 36 runs batted in. While
starting 27 games, she also led the team with a .844 slugging
percentage and a .505 on-base percentage.
Tornow tallied 12 multi-hit games and posted five contests
with three or more runs batted in. Tornow’s big showing
came in a 31-1 win over UW-Superior in which she went 5-for-5
with four runs scored and five runs batted in. She also posted
3-for-4 days with three runs scored and three runs batted
in against both Hope College (10-1 win) and UW-Platteville
(9-1 victory).
In 2007, Tornow started 45 contests and batted .293 with four
home runs and 20 runs batted in. She now has a .343 batting
average, 11 home runs and 56 runs batted in during her 72
career games.
Sullivan owned a 1.88 earned run average on her way to a record
of 11-7 in 2008. Her 16 starts included eight complete games,
three shutouts and one save in 104.1 innings of work. Opponents
batted .196 against her while striking out 151 times. Sullivan
ranked eighth in the NCAA Division III with 10.1 strikeouts
per seven innings.
In a 10-inning, 6-1 victory over UW-Whitewater, Sullivan struck
out 13 batters while allowing just one run on four hits. She
threw a seven-inning shutout while striking out 12 in a 6-0
win against Grand View College. Sullivan’s one-hitter
with nine strikeouts led the Titans to a 7-0 victory over
UW-Eau Claire.
Sullivan posted a 1.35 earned run average in 26 innings pitched
during 2005. In 2006, she went 7-6 on the mound with a 1.97
earned run average and struck out 52 batters in 96 innings
of work.
Sullivan went 14-1 in 2007 with an earned run average of 1.52.
She threw five shutouts while striking out 91 batters in 105.2
innings. For her career, Sullivan owns a record of 32-15,
an earned run average of 1.75 and 313 strikeouts in 332 innings
pitched.
Heinzelman started all 43 games for UW-Oshkosh in 2008, posting
a batting average of .343. She led the team with 46 runs scored
and hit six home runs while knocking in 26 runs. She also
recorded a team-high 13 doubles and 27 walks.
In 2007, Heinzelman batted .279 in 47 games. She finished
second on the team with 16 walks and doubled eight times while
driving in 13 runs. Heinzelman also scored 25 times, the second-best
total on the Titans.
Joining Stampfli on the Great Lakes All-Region First Team
were pitcher Jenny Ross, second baseman Casey Leisgang and
designated player Kristi Doucette of UW-Eau Claire, catcher
Kaylee Noll of North Central College (Ill.), first baseman
Jacquelyn Tassone of Carthage College, third baseman Dana
Cebular and outfielder Shannon Starr of Aurora University
(Ill.), shortstop Amanda LeBeau and outfielder Lauren Cruz
of UW-Whitewater, outfielders Monica Urban and Christy Engel
of Illinois Wesleyan University, utility player Christy Condon

Titans Place Four On All-WIAC Team

Co-Pitcher
of the Year Ronessa Stampfli (Sr. • Brodhead) picked
up all-conference honors as UW-Oshkosh earned four spots on
the 2008 All-WIAC Women’s Softball Team. Catcher Dani
Olsen (Sr. • Verona) and outfielder Whitney Tornow (So.
• Neenah) also joined pitcher Amy Sullivan (Sr. •
Oshkosh) on the squad.
This marks the fourth consecutive season Stampfli earned the
top pitching honor. The other recipient of the Co-Picher of
the Year award was UW-Whitewater’s Jessica Stang. Stampfli
won Pitcher of the Year in 2005 and 2007 while receiving Co-Pitcher
of the Year honors in 2006.

second on UW-Oshkosh, while her 26 sacrifices led the WIAC.

second baseman Becky Crane, UW-Whitewater’s outfielders
Lauren Cruz and Amy Gahl, shortstop Amanda LeBeau and pitcher
Jessica Stang, UW-River Falls’ first baseman Keri Feller,
third baseman Emily Howlett and shortstop Mindy Rudinger and
UW-Stevens Point’s shortstop Laura Van Abel.
Howlett
won the Position Player of the Year award while Janke earned
the Scholar-Athlete honors. UW-Whitewater’s Brenda Volk
won the WIAC Coach of the Year.

Titans' NCAA Postseason Run Ends
In Regional Final

UW-Oshkosh
earned its way into the championship contest before losing
to host UW-Eau Claire in the NCAA Division III Eau Claire
Regional Women's Softball Tournament on Sunday (May 11) in
Eau Claire.
The Titans (32-11) topped the University of St. Thomas (Minn.)
in the first contest, 4-0. Jenny Ross threw a shutout in the
second game as the Blugolds (32-11) defeated UW-Oshkosh, 6-0.
The University of St. Thomas entered the day ranked third
in the NCAA Division III by the National Fastpitch Coaches
Association, UW-Oshkosh 14th and UW-Eau Claire 25th.
UW-Eau Claire advances to the eight-team finals of the NCAA
Division III Championship in Salem, Va. on May 16-20. UW-Eau
Claire defeated the UW-Oshkosh in the title game of the Eau
Claire Regional for the second consecutive year.
The Titans used a pair of singles to get the scoring started
in the fourth inning against the University of St. Thomas
(42-5). After a sacrifice, Kayla Kodet (Fr. • Manitowoc)
ripped a run-scoring single. Aerial Spang (Fr. • Appleton)
followed with a two-out single to make it a 2-0 lead.
UW-Oshkosh took advantage of a Tommies’ error in the
fifth frame to score again. Whitney Tornow (So. • Neenah)
brought in a run on a fielder’s choice before Sydney
Wyss (Fr. • Monroe) made it 4-0 with a sacrifice fly.
The University of St. Thomas out-hit the Titans, 6-4.
Ronessa Stampfli (Sr. • Brodhead) picked up the shutout
win, giving up six hits while striking out eight in seven
innings. The loss went to Maria Bye, who surrendered three
earned runs on four hits in six innings. It was just the second
loss of the season for Bye.
UW-Eau Claire got on the board right away with a Casey Leisgang
solo home run in the first inning. Jill Janke made it 2-0
in the third frame after singling and scoring on a wild pitch.
Another Janke single got the Blugolds going in the fifth inning.
With two outs, Bekki Kidnie hit a two-run single for a 4-0
lead. Leisgang and Janke each added a run-scoring single in
the sixth inning to complete the scoring.
Amie Heinzelman (So. • Monroe) recorded two of the Titans’
five base hits. The loss went to Amy Sullivan (Sr. •
Oshkosh), who allowed four runs while striking out six in
five innings.
Ross gave up just five hits while striking out five in seven
innings to get the win. Janke tallied four hits while Leisgang
had two of the Blugolds’ 10. |
