UW-Oshkosh To Host Winter Softball Clinics
The UW-Oshkosh women's softball team will host a series of
winter hitting, pitching, catching and fielding clinics for youths
from grades 1-12. All clinics will be under the direction of head
coach Cindy Suess.
Girls in grades 9-12 can register
for a hitting, infield and outfield clinic on March 7 and a pitching and catching clinic on Feb. 6.
Girls in grades 1-8 can register for a hitting, infield and outfield clinic on Jan. 31 and a pitching and catching clinic on Jan. 30.
All clinics will be held
in Kolf Sports Center. The hitting, infield and outfield clinics cost $75 each, while the pitching and catching clinics cost $40 for grades 1-5, $50 for grades 6-8 and $65 for grades 9-12.

Women's Softball Team To Hold
Informational Meeting
The UW-Oshkosh women's softball team will hold a
mandatory informational meeting for all new and returning players
on Wednesday, Sept. 9 in room 135 of Kolf Sports Center. The meeting
begins at 9 p.m.
All candidates for the 2010 team should bring their
Titan ID card to the meeting. New players must have all of their
athletic training information completed, which includes a health
history questionnaire, a physical exam and health insurance form.

Tornow Receives All-America Honors
Outfielder Whitney Tornow (Jr. • Neenah) set multiple single-season school records on her way to capturing an NCAA Division III All-America distinction from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).
Tornow made the NFCA’s second team, becoming just the fifth UW-Oshkosh player to earn All-America accolades. She also picked up the WIAC Position Player of the Year award and was named to the All-Great Lakes Region First Team in 2009. Her totals of a .482 batting average, 12 home runs, 45 runs batted in and a .936 slugging percentage were all new Titan standards.
Tornow started all 37 games and posted team-highs with 53 hits, 10 doubles, 28 runs scored and 10 stolen bases. Hitting safely in 32 contests, she racked up 14 multi-hit games and a 13-game hitting streak. Tornow also recorded two or more runs batted in on 13 occasions.
In back-to-back 7-5 victories over UW-River Falls and UW-Eau Claire, Tornow amassed at least four runs batted in. She marked two hits, two runs scored and four driven in against the Falcons before tallying two hits and six runs batted in against the Blugolds.
Tornow also propelled the Titans to a 7-4 triumph over UW-Platteville by bashing out three hits, scoring once and driving in four runs.
Tornow’s 2008 campaign featured a .429 batting average with seven home runs and 36 runs batted in over 27 starts. She played in 45 contests during 2007, hitting .293 with four home runs, four triples and 20 runs batted in.
For her 109 starts at UW-Oshkosh, Tornow owns a .391 batting average with 29 doubles, six triples, 23 homers, 80 runs scored and 101 runs batted in.
The NFCA’s first and second team each contained 15 players. UW-Whitewater had Jessica Stang and Amy Gahl each named to the first squad. The Titans, who finished the season third in the WIAC at 11-5, posted a 20-17 record this season. Previous UW-Oshkosh All-Americans were Nila Gruenewald (1985), Jamie Ziegel (1987), Jane Morgan (1988) and Ronessa Stampfli (2007).

Tornow Captures All-Region First Team Status

Tornow earned first team honors after making the second team during 2008. Tornow’s 2009 campaign featured UW-Oshkosh records with a .482 batting average, 12 home runs, 45 runs batted in and a .936 slugging percentage. Tornow Named WIAC Position Player Of The Year
  Outfielder Whitney Tornow (Jr. • Neenah) was voted the league's Position Player of the Year as UW-Oshkosh placed three players on the 2009 All-WIAC Women's Softball Team.
Tornow was a member of the first team along with UW-Oshkosh shortstop Sydnee Wyss (So. • Monroe). UW-Oshkosh pitcher Lauren Roberts (Fr. • Denmark) received honorable mention recognition.
Tornow is the second UW-Oshkosh player to pick up the league's top position player award. She was an all-conference first team selection a year ago.
This past season, Tornow started all 37 games and hit .482 (53-110) with 12 home runs, 10 doubles, 28 runs scored, 45 runs batted in, 10 stolen bases and a .936 slugging percentage. She set UW-Oshkosh records with her marks in home runs, runs batted in, batting average and slugging percentage.
Tornow hit safely in 32 games, including 14 multi-hit contests. She had three hits in seven contests, including both games of doubleheaders with UW-Stout on April 4 and Ripon College on April 11. Tornow went 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of two-run home runs in a 7-5 win over UW-River Falls on April 24 and 2-for-3 at the plate with a grand slam and six runs batted in during a 7-5 victory over UW-Eau Claire on April 28. She also put together a 13-game hitting streak during the season.
In 2008, Tornow started all 27 games that she played in and hit .429 (33-77) with seven home runs and 36 runs batted in. Tornow started all 47 games in 2007 and hit .293 (39-133) with four home runs and 20 runs batted in.
Wyss also started all 37 games this past season. She hit .362 (47-130) with nine doubles, three triples, two home runs, 27 runs scored and 13 runs batted in. Wyss led the Titans in triples, while ranking second on the team in hits, doubles and runs scored.
Wyss had 14 multi-hit games during the 2009 campaign, including a four-hit outing with a double and two runs scored in an 8-5 loss to UW-River Falls on April 24. She also strung together a 12-game hitting streak during the season.
In 2008, Wyss started all 43 games and hit .323 (42-130) with seven doubles, nine stolen bases, 27 runs scored and 21 runs batted in.
Roberts appeared in 26 games this past season and posted an 11-8 record with three saves and a 2.25 earned run average. She hurled nine complete games, including three shutouts, and struck out 139 batters in 127.1 innings pitched.
Roberts struck out 10-plus batters five times this past season. Her top performance was a seven-inning, two-hit shutout with 14 strikeouts during a 5-0 win over Ripon College on April 11. That victory capped a string of four consecutive starts with at least 11 strikeouts, including 12 over seven innings during a 7-4 win over UW-Platteville on April 10.
Tornow and Wyss were among 20 players named to the first team. The squad included second baseman Aleisha Harper and shortstop Katie Stalker of UW-Eau Claire, shortstop Jenna Ahnen, outfielder Rachel Croak and pitcher Kaylyn Von Glahn of UW-La Crosse, second baseman Tera Burr of UW-Platteville, first baseman/third baseman Sarah Fern, outfielder Jessica Lundgren and shortstop Mindy Rudiger of UW-River Falls, utility player Brittany Zelenka of UW-Stevens Point, utility player Nelly Peterson of UW-Stout, shortstop Becky Crane of UW-Superior, outfielder Lauren Cruz, outfielder Amy Gahl, outfielder Suzanne Gersich, shortstop Amanda LeBeau, pitcher Jessica Stang and catcher Liz Yucuis of UW-Whitewater. Stang was named the league's Pitcher of the Year.
Roberts was one of 13 players receiving honorable mention accolades. Wyss was also the Titans' representative on the WIAC's All-Sportsmanship Team.
UW-Whitewater's Brenda Volk was chosen as the WIAC's Coach of the Year. Burr and Gahl shared the WIAC's Judy Kruckman Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award.

Warhawks Oust Titans From WIAC Tournament
 Jessica Stang threw a two-hitter and struck out nine batters as nationally ranked UW-Whitewater ended UW-Oshkosh’s women's softball season with an 8-1 victory in the WIAC Tournament on Saturday (May 2) in Superior.
The Warhawks (36-4), who entered the game ranked fourth in the NCAA Division III, went ahead on a solo home run by Liz Yucuis in the fourth inning. UW-Whitewater then got a two-run shot by Suzanne Gersich later in the frame to put the game away. Stang retired the last 14 batters she faced and did not allow an earned run.
An Ashley Smith double got the offense started in UW-Whitewater’s first at-bat. Gersich then stroked a single to center field to put her team up, 1-0.
UW-Oshkosh (20-17) used a Warhawk error as it marked its lone run in the third inning. With one out, Whitney Tornow (Jr. • Neenah) laced a run-scoring single to tie the contest and give her a school-record 45 runs batted in on the year. Sydnee Wyss (So. • Monroe) scored on Tornow's hit.
Amy Gahl tacked on a run-scoring single during UW-Whitewater’s four-run rally in the fourth. The Warhawks made it 8-1 in their seventh trip to the plate with one run on a Jordyn Gaza single and two more on a single from Tina Galuk.
Tornow recorded both of UW-Oshkosh’s base hits. Her other success was an infield single in the first inning.
The Warhawks, who defeated the Titans in each of their three matchups this season, rattled off 14 hits. Gaza recorded four hits, while Ashley Smith totaled three and Gersich and Yucuis each had two.
Ashley Kowalewski (Fr. • Greenfield) took the loss, allowing two runs on six hits in three innings. Lauren Roberts (Fr. • Denmark) fired the next 3.1 frames (five earned runs) before Brynn Wessberg (Fr. • Wales) got the last two outs. |

Titans Sweep Defending National Champion
  UW-Oshkosh defeated the defending NCAA Division III national champions twice thanks to Whitney Tornow’s (Jr. • Neenah) eight runs batted in against the UW-Eau Claire women's softball team on Tuesday (April 28) at the Oshkosh Sports Complex.
The Titans (19-15/11-5 WIAC) earned third place in the WIAC by winning the opener, 7-5, and the nightcap, 5-4. Tornow continued her torrid place at the plate with a grand slam and a two-run homer to give her a school-record 12 bombs on the year.
Sydnee Wyss (So. • Monroe) got UW-Oshkosh started in the opener with a leadoff double. After a Marti Meyer (Fr. • Verona) single, Tornow drilled a single to plate two runs.
Hits by Sara Baumgartner, Betsy Kettinger and Jenny Janke led to a run for UW-Eau Claire (27-12/10-6 WIAC) in the second frame. Janke added her second run-scoring single in the fourth inning to tie the game at 2.
Wyss and Meyer singled after a walk to load the bases in the Titans’ half of the fourth. With one out, Tornow connected for a grand slam and a 6-2 cushion.
A run-scoring groundout by Ainsley Klar and a Baumgartner single cut the Blugolds’ deficit to 6-4 during the fifth inning.
UW-Oshkosh committed a fielding miscue during the sixth frame to reduce its lead to one run. Hart got that run back in the bottom half with a sacrifice fly.
Lauren Roberts (Fr. • Denmark) picked up her 11th win of the season with a seven-inning complete game. She surrendered four earned runs on 11 hits while striking out four batters.
UW-Eau Claire totaled 11 hits, including three apiece by Baumgartner, Kettinger and Janke. The Titans got three hits from Wyss and two from Meyer, Tornow and Kayla Kodet (So. • Manitowoc).
The pitching loss fell on Ashley Meinen after she tossed the first four frames and yielded six runs on eight hits. Bri Strum fired the last two innings and gave up one run.
Both teams put two runs on the board during the first inning of the second contest. UW-Eau Claire marked on a single by Bekki Kidnie and a double from Kristi Doucette. Tornow then tied the game with a two-run blast in the bottom half.
The Blugolds used a Titans’ error and two hits to take a 4-2 advantage in the third frame. Baumgartner singled in one run before Janke did the same with two outs.
UW-Oshkosh had its first five batters reach base as it took hold of the contest in the fifth inning. Wyss opened with a double and later scored on an error. A two-run single by Lisa Hart (Fr. • Oshkosh) then provided the winning runs for the Titans.
Trailing 5-4, the Blugolds’ next five batters struck out. They finished with seven base hits, including a pinch-hit, two-out double from Klar in the seventh frame. Aleisha Harper saw her 11-game hitting streak come to an end.
Roberts earned a one-out save in relief of starter Ashley Kowalewski (Fr. • Greenfield). Kowalewski fanned eight batters and allowed just one earned run over 6.2 innings to earn the win.
UW-Eau Claire got a six-inning complete game from Sturm in a losing effort. She was charged with four earned runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out five.

Wet Field Conditions Postpones Titans' Clash With Blugolds

Titans, Falcons Split Twinbill
  Whitney Tornow (Jr. • Neenah) smacked a pair of two-run homers to establish a new school record as the UW-Oshkosh women's softball team earned one victory in two games with UW-River Falls on Friday (April 24) in River Falls.
UW-Oshkosh (17-15/9-5 WIAC) took the second contest, 7-5, after Tornow upped her season total to 10 round-trippers with bombs in the third and sixth frames. The Falcons (20-14/6-8 WIAC) got a three-run homer from Rachel Mathias in the eighth inning to win the opener, 8-5.
The Titans took a 1-0 lead in game one when Sydnee Wyss (So. • Monroe) scored on a double steal. In the bottom half, Mindy Rudiger belted a home run to put UW-River Falls on top, 2-1.
A walk and error assisted the Falcons in their third at-bat. Two runs came home on a throwing error before a wild pitch made it a 5-1 ballgame.
A pair of two-out singles got UW-Oshkosh going in the fifth inning. Tornow pounded a run-scoring double to plate one, which was followed by a single from Melinda Wulf (Fr. • New London) that cut the deficit to 5-3.
Lisa Hart (Fr. • Oshkosh) led off the Titans’ sixth turn with a double before Ashley Steltenpohl (Sr. • Wisconsin Rapids) drove her in with a single. Alicia Testin (Fr. • Wild Rose) continued the rally and equaled the score at 5 with a double to right-center.
Singles from Dana Book and Cassie Peterson put runners aboard during the bottom of the eighth. Mathias then clocked her walk-off shot with one out.
The Falcons’ winning pitcher was Rose Tusa, who struck out six and yielded one earned run over 6.1 innings. Heidi Emmer allowed four earned runs during her 1.2 frames.
Jessica Lundgren tallied three hits and Book two for UW-River Falls, which finished with nine. The Titans marked 14 base hits, including four from Wyss and three by Tornow.
UW-Oshkosh’s Ashley Kowaleski (Fr. • Greenfield) took the loss, surrendering three earned runs on six hits in five innings. Brynn Wessberg (Fr. • Wales) also saw action and gave up four runs (one earned) over 2.1 innings.
Game two featured a strong pitching performance by Lauren Roberts (Fr. • Denmark). She held the Falcons to just one hit in the first four innings, finishing with seven strikeouts. Roberts gave up three earned runs on four hits in the seven-inning victory.
UW-River Falls made that one hit count, getting a Sarah Fern single to take a 1-0 advantage in the first inning. The Titans came back and took hold of the game for good with Tornow’s two-run blast in the top of the third.
The first three Titans walked during the fourth frame en route to a trio of runs. Kelley Koebler (Fr. • Janesville) stole home for the inning’s first tally, while Wyss singled in two more for a 5-1 cushion.
Tornow’s second two-run dinger in the sixth proved to be vital because UW-River Falls closed the game with a bang. The Falcons got a walk and two errors to load the bases in the seventh, when Rudiger launched a grand slam to trim the contest’s final margin.
UW-Oshkosh totaled 10 hits to best the Falcons’ mark of four. Tornow and Wulf each recorded two hits for the Titans.
The pitching loss fell on Jamie Klein, who opened the game with five earned runs in 3.1 frames. Tusa came in for 1.2 scoreless innings, while Christina Korger tossed two innings and gave up two runs on four hits. |
Ninth-Ranked Warhawks Take Two Games From Titans
  Jessica Stang earned a complete-game victory in the opener and came in for a three-inning save during the nightcap as the UW-Whitewater women's softball team defeated UW-Oshkosh twice on Wednesday (April 22) at the Oshkosh Sports Complex.
The Warhawks (29-3/14-0 WIAC) took game one, 8-1, after Stang allowed just five hits while striking out five in seven innings. She and starter Stacy Bahr each surrendered one run as ninth-ranked UW-Whitewater held on for a 3-2 win in the second contest.
Amy Gahl was the catalyst as UW-Whitewater jumped out with three runs in the first inning, two in the second and one in the third. Gahl doubled to open the first game before scoring on an Ashley Smith single. Lauren Cruz capped the opening frame with a two-run homer to right field.
Sydnee Wyss (So. • Monroe) followed suit in the bottom half, doubling for the Titans (16-14/8-4 WIAC). UW-Oshkosh then tallied its lone run when Whitney Tornow (Jr. • Neenah) reached on a Warhawk error.
A two-out walk to Nicole Bothun got UW-Whitewater started in the second. Gahl then came up next and made it 5-1 with a two-run home run. Lauren Rankins added another run for the Warhawks on a third-inning sacrifice fly.
Cruz drove in a run during the fifth frame with a groundout after Suzanne Gersich doubled. Gersich tacked on a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning for UW-Whitewater’s eighth run.
UW-Oshkosh opened its fifth at-bat with three consecutive singles. The Titans then hit into a trio of fielder’s choice groundouts to end the frame without scoring.
The Warhawks outhit UW-Oshkosh, 10-5. Gahl accounted for three hits while Gersich, Cruz and Bothun each marked two for UW-Whitewater. Lauren Roberts (Fr. • Denmark) started and took the loss after allowing six runs in two frames on the mound. Brynn Wessberg (Fr. • Wales) fired the last five innings and yielded two runs on four hits.
The first inning was again the difference in the second contest. After a UW-Oshkosh error to open the game, Gersich blasted a two-run homer to go in front.
Kayla Kodet (So. • Manitowoc) led off the Titans’ fourth frame before advancing on a sacrifice bunt. UW-Oshkosh cut its deficit to 2-1 on Ashley Steltenpohl’s (Sr. • Wisconsin Rapids) single to left field.
In the fifth inning, Gahl singled before scoring on a double from Amanda LeBeau. The Titans used two UW-Whitewater errors to load the bags in their sixth, but popped out to end the threat.
Tornow walked and stole third base as UW-Oshkosh looked to rally in the seventh and final frame. Julia Burns (Fr. • Verona) drove home Tornow with a single. The Titans had runners at the corners when Steltenpohl struck out to end the game.
Steltenpohl was the only player to record two base hits in the contest as UW-Oshkosh registered eight hits and UW-Whitewater six.
Bahr gathered the win with her four innings of one-run, five-hit ball. Stang struck out four batters while surrendering one run on three hits for the Warhawks.

Rain Cancels Titans' Doubleheader With Maroons
Rain has forced Sunday's (April 19) doubleheader in Chicago, Ill., between the UW-Oshkosh and University of Chicago women's softball teams to be canceled.

Titans Bounce Back To Capture Eagles
  A three-hit shutout by Lauren Roberts (Fr. • Denmark) helped the UW-Oshkosh women's softball team win the nightcap and split a doubleheader with Judson University (Ill.) on Saturday (April 18) in Mishawaka, Ind.
Judson University (22-21) scored three runs in the sixth inning to break a 5-5 deadlock and win the first game, 8-5.
UW-Oshkosh (16-12) then tallied seven runs in the first inning and benefited from the pitching of Roberts to win the five-inning, second game, 8-0. Roberts struck out six batters and walked three en route to her third shutout of the season.
Judson University used two walks and a pair of run-scoring hits in the first inning of the opener to take a 3-0 lead. The Eagles scored on a run-scoring double by Victoria Perez and a two-run double by Samantha Gladen.
A walk opened UW-Oshkosh's second inning as it tied the contest in similar fashion. The Titans cut their deficit on a run-scoring single by Lisa Hart (Fr. • Oshkosh) and pulled even with the Eagles on a two-run single by Sydnee Wyss (So. • Monroe).
Whitney Tornow (Jr. • Neenah) tripled and scored on a passed ball with one out to put UW-Oshkosh ahead 4-3 in the third inning. That lead didn't last long as Lizzy Jacobson vaulted the Eagles in front with a two-run home run in the bottom half of the frame.
In the fourth inning, Hart hit a leadoff double. UW-Oshkosh's next two batters struck out, but Wyss came through with a run-scoring single to equal the score at 5.
Judson scored the game's deciding runs in the sixth inning. The Eagles tallied three runs on four hits and one UW-Oshkosh error. Judson University took a 6-5 lead on Kristin Krueger's run-scoring single and an 8-5 advantage on Nicole Dimiceli's two-run single.
The Titans loaded the bases with one out in the seventh inning, but failed to score.
UW-Oshkosh totaled eight hits, including a pair from both Hart and Wyss. Judson University's nine hits featured two by Carrie Sensor.
Virginia McAndrews pitched all seven innings and allowed four earned runs with nine strikeouts to earn the pitching victory for the Eagles.
The Titans' Ashley Kowalewski (Fr. • Greenfield) took the pitching loss after giving up eight runs and eight hits over 5.2 innings. Brynn Wessberg (Fr. • Wales) hurled one-third of an inning for UW-Oshkosh.

Titans Unable To Defeat Pilots, Tigers
  The UW-Oshkosh women's softball team tallied only four hits in the first game and issued too many walks in the second as it lost contests to both Bethel College (Ind.) and Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) on Friday (April 17) in Mishawaka, Ind.
Bethel College (40-3), which entered the day ranked eighth in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), extended its winning streak to 19 games with a 4-1 victory over the Titans (15-11) in the opener. The Pilots’ Brittney Hire tossed all seven innings and allowed just four hits while striking out nine batters.
In the nightcap, Olivet Nazarene University (27-18) walked 12 times and had nine players record at least one hit during a 13-6 win over UW-Oshkosh (15-11). Caitlin Gidcumb led the Tigers with two hits, one run scored and four runs batted in.
UW-Oshkosh took an early lead in the first inning of the first game after a Sydnee Wyss (So. • Monroe) walk and a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Melinda Wulf (So. • New London) ripped a single to score the game’s first run. UW-Oshkosh loaded the bases later in the inning, but failed to score again.
An error in the second inning helped Bethel College score twice in the second inning. The Pilots had two hits in the frame, including Mandy Cripe's one-out, two-run single.
Bethel College concluded its scoring with two runs in the sixth inning. Katie Boocher tripled in one run and scored on the hit when UW-Oshkosh recorded its third error of the contest.
UW-Oshkosh, which had its nine-game winning streak end, got two of its four hits from Lisa Hart (Fr. • Oshkosh). Whitney Tornow (Jr. • Neenah) and Wyss went hitless for the Titans to end their hitting streaks at 13 and 12 games, respectively.
Bethel College managed six base hits, including a pair by Boocher.
Lauren Roberts (Fr. • Denmark) suffered the pitching loss for UW-Oshkosh. She gave up three earned runs on six hits while striking out five batters.
Olivet Nazarene University jumped on UW-Oshkosh right away with four runs in the top of the first inning. The Tigers scored once on Gidcumb’s single, twice on Molly Anderson’s single and once more on a double by Shelley Durante.
In the bottom of the first inning, a walk and single set up a two-run single by the Titans' Wulf.
The teams exchanged runs over the next two innings before the Tigers scored twice on a single by Gidcumb in the fourth. UW-Oshkosh got those runs back in the bottom of the fourth inning on Ashley Steltenpohl's (Sr. • Wisconsin Rapids) two-run home run.
Olivet Nazarene University pulled ahead 9-5 on Marisa Baker's two-run double in the sixth inning. The Titans retrieved one of those runs back on a single by Wyss in the sixth inning.
The Tigers benefited from five bases on balls in the seventh inning to put the game away. Olivet Nazarene University scored four runs in the inning, including one on a single by Rachel Comoglio and three on bases-loaded walks issued to Jordan Reynolds, Gidcumb and Anderson.
UW-Oshkosh totaled nine hits, including two by Wyss.
Nine different Tigers tallied a hit as they finished with 10 in the contest. They also had five players walk at least twice, including Reynolds, who drew three free passes.
UW-Oshkosh's Ashley Kowalewski (Fr. • Greenfield) pitched the first two outs in the first inning and all three in the seventh. She was tagged with the loss after four runs, three hits and three walks. Brynn Wessberg (Fr. • Wales) relieved Kowalewski in the first inning and went on to hurl 5.1 for the game. She allowed seven earned runs, seven hits and nine walks.

Titans Hush Pointers
  Both Lauren Roberts (Fr. • Denmark) and Ashley Kowalewski (Fr. • Greenfield) allowed just one run as the UW-Oshkosh softball team notched a pair of victories against UW-Stevens Point on Tuesday (April 14) in Stevens Point.
The Titans (15-9/8-2 WIAC) captured the first game of the doubleheader by a score of 5-1 after Roberts struck out nine batters. She tossed all seven innings and walked one while giving up six hits.
In the nightcap, Kowalewski extended UW-Oshkosh's winning streak to nine games with a 10-1 victory as she yielded five hits in five innings.
The Titans’ offense was very efficient, scoring six times in the opening frame and finishing with 10 runs on seven base hits. Sydnee Wyss (So. • Monroe) walked and stole a base to get things going instantly in game one. Melinda Wulf (So. • New London) then knocked her in with a sacrifice fly.
The Titans made it a 2-0 advantage in the second inning on a Wyss RBI single after Kayla Kodet (So. • Manitowoc) doubled.
The first two UW-Oshkosh batters reached base as the Titans put the game away with three runs on three hits in the fourth. Marti Meyer (Fr. • Verona) singled home two runs with two outs. A double from Whitney Tornow (Jr. • Neenah) then plated the Titans’ fifth score.
The Pointers (13-11/0-6 WIAC) were able to mark their lone tally on a Jessica Berger double and Allie Dorn run-scoring single in the fourth frame.
UW-Stevens Point totaled six hits in the contest.
Wyss, Wulf and Kodet each totaled two hits for the Titans. UW-Oshkosh, which left runners on base during six of the seven innings, marked nine base hits.
Kayla Kastenmeier pitched the first four frames and allowed five earned runs to take the loss. UW-Stevens Point had Elyse Nelson hurl the final three frames and give up just two hits while striking out a pair.
UW-Oshkosh had two outs before breaking out for six runs in the first inning of the nightcap. The Titans tallied on singles by Wulf and Kodet before Ashley Steltenpohl (Sr. • Wisconsin Rapids) walked with the bases loaded. Two more runs came in on a passed ball, while Cyndi Becker (Fr. • Mount Prospect, Ill.) capped the frame with a run-scoring single.
A Pointers’ error allowed the Titans’ to tally in the third inning, with UW-Oshkosh taking an 8-0 advantage on Tornow’s groundout.
Melissa Wenig then put UW-Stevens Point on the board with a solo home run in the fourth frame.
Tornow doubled home two runs in the fifth inning to cap the scoring. She recorded two of UW-Oshkosh’s seven hits, as did Kodet.
The Pointers finished with five hits from five different players.
Dorn suffered from the Pointers’ first-inning error as she surrendered six unearned runs on three hits in 0.2 innings. She took the loss, while Nelson (two innings) and Kastenmeier (2.1 innings) finished the game and allowed one run apiece. |
Tornow Receives WIAC Hitter Of The Week Award
Outfielder Whitney Tornow (Jr. • Neenah), who went an impressive 13-for-20 (.650) at the plate to lead UW-Oshkosh to doubleheader sweeps of UW-Superior, UW-Platteville and Ripon College, was named WIAC Hitter of the Week for games played April 6-12.
Tornow, who tallied at least two hits in four of the Titans' six contests, compiled a slugging percentage of 1.200 and an on-base percentage of .720. Her statistical totals also included two home runs, five doubles, nine runs batted in, eight runs scored and one stolen base.
In UW-Oshkosh wins of 9-3 and 13-4 over UW-Superior on April 8, Tornow went a combined 2-for-5 at the plate with one run batted in and four runs scored.
Tornow then went a combined 5-for-8 at the plate with two home runs and six runs batted in to spark the Titans to wins of 7-4 and 5-3 over UW-Platteville on April 10. She smashed a three-run home run in the 7-4 victory and a two-run home run in the 5-3 triumph.
Against Ripon College on April 11, Tornow led UW-Oshkosh to wins of 5-0 and 5-4 by going a combined 6-for-7 at the plate with five doubles, two runs batted in and two runs scored. In the 5-4 win, Tornow sent the game to extended play by hitting a two-strike, two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Titans won the game in the ninth inning, but after Tornow was intentionally walked with two outs and a runner on first base in the frame.
Tornow, who counted 11 hits (five doubles and two home runs) in her last 15 at-bats of the week, owns an 11-game hitting streak. |
Titans Take Two Games From Red Hawks
  Lauren Roberts (Fr. • Denmark) threw a two-hit shutout and Julia Burns (Fr. • Verona) capped a big comeback with a walk-off single as the UW-Oshkosh women's softball team earned a pair of victories over Ripon College on Saturday (April 11) at the Oshkosh Sports Complex.
The Titans (13-9) captured the first game, 5-0, as Roberts struck out the first seven batters and retired the first 12. She pitched all seven innings, with her second career shutout featuring a total of 14 strikeouts.
UW-Oshkosh rallied for a 5-4 win in the nightcap as it scored four runs in the seventh inning and one in the ninth. Burns completed the Titans' dramatic comeback by slugging a two-out, run-scoring single in the ninth inning. Her hit followed consecutive walks to Marti Meyer (Fr. • Verona) and Whitney Tornow (Jr. • Neenah).
Tornow was day's offensive star as she went 6-for-7 at the plate with five doubles, two runs scored and two runs batted in. Her performance finished off a four-day, six-game period in which she went 13-20 (.650) at the plate with two home runs, five doubles, nine runs batted in and eight runs scored.
Tornow forced extra play in the nightcap when she smashed a two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Titans scored four runs on three hits in the inning, with singles by Melinda Wulf (Fr. • New London) and Sydnee Wyss (So. • Monroe) also scoring runs. The inning also included a hit batter and a walk.
The Red Hawks (9-10) took a 1-0 lead on an unearned run in the first inning. Ripon College benefited from an infield single, a UW-Oshkosh infield error and a run-scoring groundout by by Andrea Knorr.
A Megan Sockness walk and a Natalie Geenen single started a two-run fifth inning for Ripon College. Following a sacrifice bunt, Jackie Reichhart came through and gave the Red Hawks a 3-0 lead by hitting a two-run single. Reichhart added a run-scoring single in the seventh inning to raise Ripon College's advantage to 4-0.
Ripon College was unable to break the 4-4 deadlock despite putting two runners on base in each of the eighth and ninth innings.
UW-Oshkosh recorded eight hits, including three doubles by Tornow. Ripon College registered nine hits, including two each by Geenan, Reichhart and Heather VanCuyk.
Roberts also got UW-Oshkosh's pitching win in the nightcap. She hurled the last 2.2 innings of the contest and didn't allow a run after yielding three hits. Starter Ashley Kowalewski (Fr. • Greenfield) allowed three runs and five hits in five innings before being relieved by Brynn Wessberg (Fr. • Wales) in the sixth. Wessberg allowed one run and one hit while striking out two batters in 1.1 innings of work.
Brittnee Peotter started and finished the contest on the pitching mound for Ripon College. Peotter pitched two outs into the seventh inning before being replaced by Knorr. Knorr was then replaced at the start of the eighth inning by Peotter. In all, Peotter pitched 8.1 innings and allowed four runs and seven hits. Knorr hurled one-third of an inning and yielded one run and one hit.
In the opener, UW-Oshkosh scored two runs courtesy of three Ripon College errors in the third inning. The Titans scored both of their runs on a double error by Knorr from the pitching mound.
UW-Oshkosh went ahead 3-0 on a run-scoring single by Wyss in the fourth inning. The Titans built a 5-0 advantage on run-scoring singles by Ashley Steltenpohl (Sr. • Wisconsin Rapids) and Kodet in the fifth inning.
The Titans tallied nine hits, including three by Tornow and two each by Kodet and Wyss. Two of Tornow's three hits were doubles.
Ripon College was held to singles by Knorr in the fifth inning and Kylie Ainslie in the sixth. The Red Hawks sent just 22 batters to the plate, one over the minimum.

Titans Post Wins Over Pioneers
  Whitney Tornow (Jr. • Neenah) drove in six runs as the UW-Oshkosh women's softball team overcame early deficits to win both games of a doubleheader with UW-Platteville on Friday (April 10) at the Oshkosh Sports Complex.
UW-Oshkosh (11-9/6-2 WIAC) swept UW-Platteville (3-19/0-8 WIAC) by winning contests of 7-4 and 5-3. The Titans extended their winning streak to five consecutive games by rallying from a 4-0 deficit in the opener and a 1-0 disadvantage in the nightcap.
In game one, UW-Platteville struck first as Destiny Glasson reached on a one-out error in the second inning. With two outs, Megan Pozezinski made the Titans pay for their miscue by belting a two-run home run.
A walk and stolen base got the wheels in motion for the Pioneers in the third inning. Chantal McReynolds then hit a run-scoring single to put UW-Platteville ahead 3-0. Whitney Foltz followed with another run-scoring single to give the Pioneers a 4-0 advantage.
UW-Oshkosh benefited from two UW-Platteville errors as it scored five runs in its half of the third inning. Following an error and a walk, Tornow blasted a three-run home run to cut the Titans' deficit to 5-3. After another error, Ashley Steltenpohl (Sr. • Wisconsin Rapids) gave UW-Oshkosh the lead for good with a two-run home run.
UW-Oshkosh added one more run in the fifth and sixth innings. The Titans scored in the fifth inning on a Cyndi Becker (Fr. • Mount Prospect, Ill.) double and in the sixth on a Tornow single.
Tornow had three of UW-Oshkosh's eight hits, while Foltz and Pozezinski each totaled two of UW-Platteville's five hits.
Lauren Roberts (Fr. • Denmark) overcame some early trouble to post the complete-game pitching victory for UW-Oshkosh. She allowed two earned runs and five hits while striking out 12 batters.
UW-Platteville's Renee Schuttler pitched all six innings and took the loss after yielding four earned runs and eight hits. She struck out one batter.
UW-Platteville took another early advantage when it scored in the first inning of the second game, Tera Burr hit an infield single and then came home on Katie Lenz's two-out single.
UW-Oshkosh tied the score in the second inning as Becker singled, moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt and touched home plate on a single by Lisa Hart (Fr. • Oshkosh).
The Titans took the lead for good in the fifth inning on a two-run home run by Tornow. Sydnee Wyss (So. • Monroe), who led off the frame with a walk, scored on Tornow's eighth home run of the season.

  Julia Burns (Fr. • Verona) belted home runs in consecutive at-bats as the UW-Oshkosh women's softball team captured both games of a doubleheader against UW-Superior on Wednesday (April 8) at the Oshkosh Sports Complex.
UW-Oshkosh (9-9/4-2 WIAC) scored six runs in the first inning and benefited from a pair of two-run home runs by Burns in the fourth and fifth frames to win the nightcap, 13-4.
The Titans scored twice in the fourth and fifth innings and four times in the sixth to overcome a 2-1 deficit and win the opener, 9-3.
UW-Superior (9-7/0-2 WIAC) took an early lead in the opener on Ashley Martin's run-scoring double in the first inning. Becky Crane scored on Martin's hit after leading off the contest with a single. The Yellowjackets' advantage didn't last long as UW-Oshkosh's Ashley Steltenpohl (Sr. • Wisconsin Rapids) hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning to tie the score at one.
Martin walked to open UW-Superior's fourth inning and later scored on a double by Jen Parchem. UW-Oshkosh bounced right back during its turn at the plate in the bottom of the inning, taking a 3-2 advantage on a Melinda Wulf (Fr. • New London) sacrifice fly and a UW-Superior error.
Crane smacked a two-out, solo home run in the fifth inning to equal the score at three. UW-Oshkosh answered in the bottom of the inning as it took a 5-3 lead on an illegal pitch and another sacrifice fly by Wulf.
UW-Oshkosh pulled away in the sixth inning by scoring four runs on five hits and one UW-Superior error. The inning featured a two-run double by Wulf and a run-scoring single by Marti Meyer (Fr. • Verona).
Meyer and Sydnee Wyss (So. • Monroe) each tallied two of UW-Oshkosh's eight hits. The Yellowjackets compiled six hits, including a pair from both Crane and Martin.

UW-Superior scored once in the second inning and twice in the third to cut UW-Oshkosh's lead to 6-3. An early morning snowfall in River Falls forced Sunday's (April 5) doubleheader between the UW-Oshkosh and UW-River Falls women's softball teams to be postponed.

Titans Earn Split With Blue Devils
  Whitney Tornow (Jr. • Neenah) belted two homers and posted a pair of three-hit games as the UW-Oshkosh women's softball team captured one win during a doubleheader with UW-Stout on Saturday (April 4) in Menomonie.
The Blue Devils (11-11/1-3 WIAC) got a walk-off home run by Jenna Johnson in the 11th inning to take the first contest, 5-4. Ashley Kowalewski (Fr. • Greenfield) struck out seven batters and gave up just one run as the Titans (7-9/2-2 WIAC) won the nightcap, 4-1.
Tornow put UW-Oshkosh up right away in the first inning of game one with her two-run blast. During the bottom half, UW-Stout answered with a two-run shot by Nelly Peterson. The Blue Devils then took a 3-2 advantage on a wild pitch.
The Titans rallied back in the second inning after two batters were retired. Kayla Kodet (So. • Manitowoc) doubled, took third on a passed ball and tied the score on an infield error. UW-Stout also marked after a pair of errors in the third frame to regain a 4-3 lead.

UW-Stout marked in its seventh and final at-bat after failing to score on two hits in the sixth inning. Peterson recorded the run-scoring single with one out.
UW-Oshkosh racked up 11 hits to the Blue Devils’ eight. Wyss, Steltenpohl and Lisa Hart (Fr. • Oshkosh) each laced two for the Titans, while UW-Stout got three from Kat Nelson and two from both Peterson and Vanderhoof.

Titans, Eagles Split WIAC Opener
  Lauren Roberts (Fr. • Denmark) fired a four-hit shutout in game one, which was matched by UW-La Crosse in the nightcap, as the UW-Oshkosh softball team shared a doubleheader on Thursday (April 2) in La Crosse.
Roberts struck out eight and walked one over seven innings as the Titans (6-8/1-1 WIAC) earned a 2-0 win in the opener. The Eagles’ (16-6/1-1 WIAC) Lacey Probst and Kaylyn Von Glahn combined to give up three hits in returning the favor with a 2-0 triumph.
UW-Oshkosh marked its first run during the fourth inning of the opener. Cyndi Becker (Fr. • Mount Prospect, Ill.) began the frame with an infield single. Following a sacrifice, a UW-La Crosse error allowed the Titans to grab a 1-0 lead.
A leadoff double by Sydnee Wyss (So. • Monroe) got things going in the sixth. She advanced to third base on Becker’s bunt. Whitney Tornow (Jr. • Neenah) then roped a triple to bring in the game’s final tally.
Those three hits were all that Heather Schultz allowed in her six innings as she took the loss. She struck out five, with Von Glahn entering to throw a perfect frame in the seventh.
UW-La Crosse, which saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end, got two of its four hits from Katie Pietrowiak. Neither squad recorded a hit until the Eagles notched two in the bottom of the third inning.
Rachel Weyer began the nightcap with a walk as the Eagles marked both their runs in the opening frame. She advanced on a sacrifice and Jenna Ahnen’s single before scoring on a bunt single from Katie Keyes. Ahnen later touched the plate on a double steal to go up, 2-0.
The Titans recorded singles from Tornow in the first inning, Wyss in the third and Sara Mihalo (Fr. • Spring Grove, Ill.) in the fifth. UW-La Crosse posted five hits, with none coming after the third frame.
Probst tossed the first 4.2 innings and struck out two in taking the victory. Von Glahn hurled the final 2.1 innings without allowing a Titan to reach base for the save.

Rain has forced the cancellation of the women's softball doubleheader between UW-Oshkosh and Sterling College (Kan.) on Friday (March 27) in Pensacola, Fla.
The teams were originally scheduled to play a doubleheader on Thursday (March 26), but rain postponed that set of games until Friday.

Titans, Warriors Postponed By Rain
Inclement weather in Pensacola, Fla., has postponed Thursday's (March 26) doubleheader between the UW-Oshkosh and Sterling College (Kan.) women's softball teams.
The teams will now play their doubleheader on Friday (March 27) at the same University of West Florida venue. The first pitch is scheduled for 9 a.m.

Yellow Jackets Pester Titans
  Diana Humphreys and Margaret Osborne each threw a two-hit shutout as NCAA Division II West Virginia State University took both games of a women's doubleheader from UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday (March 25) in Pensacola, Fla.
Humphreys was the winning pitcher as West Virginia State University captured a 2-0 victory in the opener. Osborne was the winning hurler in the Yellow Jackets' 6-0 triumph in the nightcap. Both pitchers allowed just two singles while striking out three batters.
UW-Oshkosh's only hits in the first contest were singles by Lisa Hart (Fr. • Oshkosh) in the third inning and Julia Burns (Fr. • Verona) in the seventh. The only hits for the Titans (5-7) in the second game were singles by Ashley Steltenpohl (Sr. • Wisconsin Rapids) in the second inning and Whitney Tornow (Jr. • Neenah) in the fourth.
The Yellow Jackets, a first-time opponent of the Titans, took a 1-0 lead in the opener on Casey Jo Crawford's sacrifice fly in the fourth inning.
West Virginia State University doubled its advantage on Brittany Hyatt's run-scoring single in the fifth inning.
The Yellow Jackets managed only four hits, including two by Hyatt. West Virginia State University left seven runners on base and UW-Oshkosh four.
Lauren Roberts (Fr. • Denmark) took the pitching loss for UW-Oshkosh after allowing two runs and four hits in five innings. She struck out three batters. Ashley Kowalewski (Fr. • Greenfield) hurled a perfect sixth inning for the Titans.
West Virginia State University used a single by Sturms and a walk by Hyatt to begin its scoring in the third inning of the nightcap. A wild pitch advanced the runners before Jenni Fowlkes belted a two-run double to put her team up for good.
The Yellow Jackets extended their lead to 4-0 with runs in the fourth and sixth innings. West Virginia State University scored on a double by Osborne in the fourth inning and a Sturms' hit by pitch with the bases loaded in the sixth.
West Virginia State University added two more runs in the seventh inning, including one on a single by Kris Taylor.
The Yellow Jackets banged out 10 hits, including three by Taylor and two by Fowlkes. West Virginia State University left 10 runners on base and UW-Oshkosh four.
Brynn Wessberg (Fr. • Wales) started and took the pitching loss for UW-Oshkosh. She hurled three innings and allowed three runs and five hits. Kowalewski yielded three runs and five hits while hurling the final four innings. |
Yellow Jackets Pester Titans
  Whitney Tornow (Jr. • Neenah) accounted for three of UW-Oshkosh's seven hits as the Titans dropped women's softball games to both Williams Baptist College (Ark.) and Southwest Baptist University (Mo.) on Monday (March 23) in Pensacola, Fla.
Williams Baptist College's Kim Emmons held the Titans (5-5) without a hit for six innings as the Eagles (10-12) took the opener, 1-0. In UW-Oshkosh's second game, Southwest Baptist University (12-15) rallied with four runs in the fifth inning to emerge on top, 4-2.
Emmons finished with a complete-game, one-hitter while striking out seven batters and walking two. The Titans' Brynn Wessberg (Fr. • Wales) gave up just one unearned run and took the pitching loss. Wessberg allowed four hits.
Williams Baptist College scored the only run of opener in the third inning. The Eagles' Teighlor Melton drew a one-out walk and advanced to second base on a two-out single by Megan Tompkins. Melton scored on the next play as a ground ball hit by Ashley Boyles was thrown away UW-Oshkosh shortstop Sydnee Wyss (So. • Monroe).
UW-Oshkosh's lone hit in the contest was a leadoff single by Tornow in the seventh inning. The Titans loaded the bases before Alicia Testin (Fr. • Wild Rose) flew out to left field to end the game.
Williams Baptist College, a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), got two of its four hits from Tompkins. Emmons shut down the Titans' bats by retiring the side in order five times.
In the first inning of game two, UW-Oshkosh got singles from Cyndi Becker (Fr. • Mount Prospect, Ill.), Tornow and Julia Burns (Fr. • Verona) to take a 1-0 lead. The Titans took their early advantage on the hit by Burns.
Southwest Baptist University, a member of the NAIA, did all of its scoring in the fourth inning. The Bearcats tallied four runs on five hits, including run-scoring singles by Taressa Gomez and McKenzie Mortimer and a two-run double by Nina Amaro-Garcia.
UW-Oshkosh answered in the bottom of the fifth inning with one run. The Titans used a hit batter and a double by Lisa Hart (Fr. • Oshkosh) to set up their score. With two outs, Tornow brought the run home on an infield single.
Josie Rose gave up six hits and two runs while striking out five batters in seven innings to capture the pitching victory for the Bearcats.
Lauren Roberts (Fr. • Denmark) took the pitching loss for the Titans after allowing four runs and seven hits in 4.2 innings of work. Wessberg allowed just two hits while hurling 2.1 scoreless innings.
UW-Oshkosh recorded six hits, including two from both Hart and Tornow.
Southwest Baptist University totaled nine hits, with Gomez, Mortimer and Krysta Baderdeen counting two each. |
Titans To Play Six Games In Florida
A mixture of NAIA and NCAA Division II women's softball opponents await UW-Oshkosh when it travels to Pensacola, Fla., for its annual spring trip.
The Titans (5-3) begin their six-game schedule with contests against Williams Baptist College (Ark.) and Southwest Baptist University (Mo.) on Monday (March 23). UW-Oshkosh will also play doubleheaders against West Virginia State University on March 25 and Sterling College (Kan.) on March 26.

Titans, Gorloks Take One Win Each
  Whitney Tornow (Jr. • Neenah) and Sydnee Wyss (So. • Monroe) accounted for all of UW-Oshkosh’s run production as the Titans split a women's softball doubleheader with Webster University (Mo.) on Sunday (March 15) in St. Louis, Mo.
The Titans (5-3) prevailed in the opening contest, 4-3, while dropping the nightcap by a tally of 4-2. Tornow blasted a two-run homer in both games, but the Gorloks (3-7) captured the second bout thanks to a grand slam by Dana Vahey.
Wyss, who tallied three hits in the opener, singled to lead off the first inning. She then came in to score the Titans’ first run on Julia Burns’ (Fr. • Verona) double.
A triple from Wyss got UW-Oshkosh started again in the third frame. Tornow stepped up to the plate with one out and knocked it out of the park for a 3-0 lead.
The Gorloks got on the board after some timely hitting from Vahey and Tara Camenzind. Vahey doubled and then scored on Camenzind’s ground ball in the third inning. During the fifth frame, Vahey singled in a run before Camenzind tied the score at 3 on a sacrifice fly.
UW-Oshkosh put a runner on base in the seventh after Kayla Kodet (So. • Manitowoc) got hit by a pitch. A successful sacrifice set up Wyss, who stroked a double to bring home the winning run.
Brynn Wessberg (Fr. • Wales) earned the win with her 1.1 frames of scoreless pitching in relief of starter Lauren Roberts (Fr. • Denmark). Roberts fired 5.2 innings with six strikeouts and came back into the contest to earn the save. The loss went to Gina Trapani, who threw all seven innings and gave up four runs on eight hits.
Game two saw all of the scoring come in the first inning of play. Identical to the previous contest, Wyss singled before Tornow launched a two-run homer.
The bottom half of the first belonged to the Gorloks after they opened by reaching on an error and singling. A walk then loaded the bases to set up Vahey’s grand slam that posted the final 4-2 advantage.
Megan Sperry captured the win with a complete-game performance in allowing two runs on seven hits. Wessberg took the loss after giving up three earned runs in 2.1 frames, while Roberts allowed just two hits in the last 3.2 innings.
Tornow was the only Titan with a pair of hits in the nightcap, while Sara Mihalo (Fr. • Spring Grove, Ill.) recorded two hits in game one.
Vahey paced Webster University with three hits on the day, but she did strand three runners during the second inning of game two. Sperry also left a trio of Gorloks on base in the third frame of their loss.

Titans, Saints Trade Victories
  UW-Oshkosh pitchers allowed just one run earned run in 15 innings of work as the Titans split a women's softball doubleheader with Maryville University (Mo.) on Saturday (March 14) in St. Louis, Mo.
Jaye O’Dell fired a complete-game in the opener as the Saints (7-5) tallied three times in the sixth inning for a 3-2 win. UW-Oshkosh (4-2) rallied with runs in the eighth and ninth frames to take the nightcap by a 3-2 score.
In the opener, neither team got on the board until the Titans led off the fourth inning with a walk and a single. Julia Burns (Fr. • Verona) touched home plate on a fielding error before Ashley Steltenpohl (Sr. • Wisconsin Rapids) stole second base. UW-Oshkosh went up 2-0 when a run came in on the stolen base attempt.
Alyssa Thompson smashed a one-out double to begin Maryville’s comeback in its sixth and final at-bat. The Titans then committed two errors, allowing the Saints to tie the contest at 2. Evelyn Drummond capped the scoring with a two-out, run-scoring double.
O’Dell allowed just four hits while striking out four in seven innings of work. UW-Oshkosh’s Lauren Roberts (Fr. • Denmark) took the loss, surrendering three unearned runs and eight hits over 5.2 innings while striking out five.
In game two, Whitney Tornow (Jr. • Neenah) got the Titans going in the first inning with a walk and stolen base. She marked the game’s first run when Burns laced a run-scoring single to left field.
Maryville equaled the score in the bottom of the first frame, opening with a base hit from Amanda Buffa. The Saints then used an O’Dell single to record the game’s last run for seven innings.
Neither team registered again through seven frames, so UW-Oshkosh began the eighth inning with a runner on second base. After a successful sacrifice, Sydnee Wyss (So. • Monroe) singled in the Titans’ second run. The Saints used the same strategy, tying the game at 2 on an O’Dell fly out.
In the ninth inning, Burns singled to advance the runner before a Melinda Wulf (So. • New London) ground out took the lead. Roberts then stranded the Maryville runner with a strikeout and fly out in the bottom half to close the game.
Roberts fired three innings to take the win, while Brynn Wessberg (Fr. • Wales) gave up one run in the opening six frames. Thompson threw all nine innings to take the loss, allowing five hits and one run with six strikeouts.
O’Dell knocked in a pair of runs for the Saints, who totaled seven hits to the Titans’ five. UW-Oshkosh received two hits apiece on the day from Wyss, Burns and Marti Meyer (Fr. • Verona).

Titans Trap Cougars, Sabres
  Whitney Tornow (Jr. • Neenah), Ashley Steltenpohl (Sr. • Wisconsin Rapids) and Melinda Wulf (Fr. • New London) each hit two home runs as the UW-Oshkosh women's softball team notched victories over the University of Minnesota-Morris and Marian University on Saturday (Feb. 28) in Marquette, Mich.
The Titans (3-1) smashed six home runs, including two by Steltenpohl, in an 11-2 victory over Minnesota-Morris (0-2). Tornow’s second home run of the day gave UW-Oshkosh a 4-2 win against Marian University (0-1) in the nightcap.
Brynn Wessberg (Fr. • Wales) fired a five-inning complete game and allowed only two hits while striking out 10 in the Titans’ victory over the Cougars. Julia Burns (Fr. • Verona) also had two of UW-Oshkosh’s 10 hits as she drove in a pair of runs.
After Minnesota-Morris went up 1-0 on an error, the Titans fought back in their half of the first inning. Tornow slammed a two-run homer to put her team up, which was followed by a two-out solo shot from Steltenpohl.
UW-Oshkosh tacked on to its lead with a Marti Meyer (Fr. • Verona) run-scoring single in the second frame. A pair of two-run blasts by Steltenpohl and Kelley Koebler (Fr. • Janesville) then made it 8-1 in the third inning.
The long ball proved useful again in the fourth, when Burns stroked a two-run homer with two outs. Melinda Wulf (So. • New London) tacked on a solo home run later for the Titans’ 11th run of the game.
A bunt brought in the Cougars’ second run in the fifth inning. Stephanie Wilson and Heidi Miller were the only batters to record a hit in the contest. Minnesota-Morris’ Emilie Kalvig got the loss, giving up seven runs over 2.2 innings.
Sydnee Wyss (So. • Monroe) got the Titans going in the second contest with a third-inning solo home run. Marian University then equaled the score at 1 in the fourth frame on Julie Crofts’ run-scoring single.
The tie-breaking knack of Tornow emerged in the fifth inning, when she smoked a two-run bomb to left field for a 3-1 advantage.
Wulf tacked on a home run when she pinch-hit in the sixth frame. UW-Oshkosh ended up with eight hits, including two from Wyss, who also scored twice.
Marian University’s last run was courtesy of an Ashley Engler single in the fifth inning. Engler tallied two hits in the game, while Crofts recorded three of the Sabres’ seven.
Lauren Roberts (Fr. • Denmark) started for the Titans and earned the win after allowing just one run on seven hits. She struck out 10 batters during her 6.1 innings on the mound. Marian University’s Kristin Rose took the loss, surrendering four runs while striking out eight in six innings.

Titans Split Doubleheader To Open Season
  The UW-Oshkosh women's softball team put together a four-run rally in its final at-bat to defeat Hope College (Mich.), 7-3, while also dropping a 7-4 decision to Simpson College (Iowa) on Friday (Feb. 27) in Marquette, Mich.
The Titans (1-1) were tied 3-3 when they led off the sixth inning against Hope College (0-1) with doubles from Ashley Steltenpohl (Sr. • Wisconsin Rapids) and Sara Mihalo (Fr. • Spring Grove, Ill.). After one run came home on an error, Melinda Wulf (Fr. • New London) singled to drive in two more for the final margin.
UW-Oshkosh’s other scoring in the opener came right away. Sydnee Wyss (So. • Monroe) tripled to start the contest and scored on a fielder’s choice. Following a Flying Dutch error, Julia Burns (Fr. • Verona) blasted a two-run home run for a 3-0 lead.
Hope College marked single runs in the third, fourth and sixth frames. One tally came via an error, while the others came on singles from Kelli Duimstra and Suzie Stevenson.
Duimstra finished 3-for-3 at the plate for the Flying Dutch, who totaled eight hits. Stevenson scored once and drove in a run while posting a pair of hits. Deidra Enochs took the loss after surrendering four runs on six hits in five frames.
Wyss and Burns each recorded two hits for the Titans, who finished with nine. The win went to Brynn Wessberg (Fr. • Wales) after she tossed 2.1 innings of four-hit, one-run ball. Ashley Kowalewski (Fr. • Greenfield) started the game and allowed one run in 4.2 innings while striking out eight batters.
In game two, Simpson College set the tone with a five-run outburst in the third inning. The frame started with a pair of singles and a hit batter before Carlye Owens knocked in a run with a single. Jessica Barkley followed by driving in two runs with a single, while Kortney Proctor closed the frame with a run-scoring base hit.
The Titans responded in their half of the third, opening with a hit-by-pitch and a Wyss single. Whitney Tornow (Jr. • Neenah) stepped up with two runners on and laced a single to bring them both home. UW-Oshkosh then pulled to 5-3 with a run-scoring groundout by Steltenpohl.
Wyss walked to lead off the fifth frame and advanced on a single by Cyndi Becker (Fr. • Mount Prospect, Ill.). Tornow handled the run-producing duties once again, ripping a single to bring home the Titans’ fourth run.
The Storm entered their final at-bat up 5-4, but they tacked on two runs to put the contest out of reach. A walk and hit-by-pitch put runners on base before a passed ball moved them over. Amanda Enochs followed that up with a two-run single for the closing tally.
UW-Oshkosh registered a pair of singles and a walk in the bottom of the seventh inning but was unable to score. The Titans finished with eight hits, including three apiece from Becker and Tornow.
