UW-Oshkosh's run in the 2007 NCAA Division III Women's Softball Championship came to an end when WIAC rival UW-Eau Claire defeated the Titans, 7-3, in the title game of the Eau Claire Regional held Sunday (May 13) in Eau Claire.

The victory advances UW-Eau Claire (35-12) to the finals of the NCAA Division III Championship on May 18-22 in Salem, Va. This will be the Blugolds third appearance in the finals as they appeared there in 1999 and 2000. The 2000 season was also the last time a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) school appeared in the finals.

UW-Eau Claire exploded right away in the top of the first inning with a leadoff single by Casey Leisgang. Rachel Paulus then hit a single that was misplayed by the right fielder, which allowed Leisgang to score all the way from first and advanced Paulus to third. After a pop-up Michelle Butkus then followed with a two-run home run to left field to give the Blugolds a 3-0 lead.

UW-Oshkosh (36-11) answered in the bottom half of the first inning with a two-run home run by Whitney Tyriver (Jr. • Oshkosh) over the left field fence. It was Tyriver’s third home run of the season.

In the top of the second inning, UW-Oshkosh's Amie Heinzelman (Fr. • Monroe) made an outstanding play robbing Leisgang of a potential home run.

UW-Oshkosh tied the contest at 3-3 in the bottom of third inning as Heinzelman doubled and scored on a single by Whitney Tornow (Fr. • Neenah). But, that is all the Titans got in the inning as they left runners at second and third bases.

UW-Eau Claire retook the lead in the top of the fourth inning. After the Titans got two quick outs in the inning, Bekki Kidnie singled to center and Stephanie Salter reached on an error to keep the inning alive. Then, Leisgang belted a three-run home run down the left field line to give the Blugolds a 6-3 lead.

Mallory McKinney added insurance for UW-Eau Claire in the top of the seventh inning when she led off the inning with a solo home run to give the Blugolds a 7-3 lead.

McKinney (17-8) went all seven innings on the mound for UW-Eau Claire and had five strikeouts. Leisgang was 2-for-3 at the plate with three runs batted in and two runs scored.

UW-Oshkosh ends the year with its highest victory total in school history. The Titans appearance in the NCAA Division III Championship was their fifth. Also ending is the stellar season of UW-Oshkosh's Ronessa Stampfli (Jr. • Brodhead). Stampfli had 51 strikeouts in the Eau Claire Regional and walked just three batters in 34 innings pitched. The three-time WIAC Pitcher of the Year hurled 41 consecutive scoreless innings at one point this season, which is the second longest streak in WIAC history. Stampfli's 757 career strikeouts is a WIAC record and represents the 12th-highest total in NCAA Division III history.

Titans Win NCAA Tournament Opener In 14 Innings

Amie Heinzelman Ronessa Stampfli Ashley Steltenpohl Whitney Tyriver

A two-out single by Ashley Steltenpohl (So. • Wisconsin Rapids) ended a record strikeout pitching duel between Ellie Schultz and Ronessa Stampfli (Jr. • Brodhead) as UW-Oshkosh edged Coe College, 1-0, in 14 innings in a second round game of the NCAA Division III Eau Claire Regional Women's Softball Tournament held Thursday (May 10) in Eau Claire.

Coe College’s Schultz, pitching her second extra inning game of the day, set an NCAA Division III single game record with 25 strikeouts. She allowed just seven hits and walked two, both in the 13th inning and the second intentionally. Her counterpart set down 22 on strikes without walking a batter and scattered five hits. The combined 47 strikeouts appear to be an NCAA all divisions record. The Division I mark was 40 and the Division II record was 45. No Division III record was listed but based on strikeouts listed for Division III individuals, the new total would have to be a record.

The winning UW-Oshkosh run was set up after two were out in the 14th inning as Whitney Tyriver (Jr. • Oshkosh) singled and stole second. Steltenpohl singled up the middle and Tyriver beat the throw to the plate, sliding to avoid the tag.

Four times during the game, Schultz struck out the side. At one point in the game, Stampfli fanned six consecutive Kohawk batters.

UW-Oshkosh, ranked eighth in the NFCA's NCAA Division III poll, had runners as far as third in both the second and eighth innings. Coe College managed to get only two runners as far as second base.

UW-Oshkosh totaled seven hits, including three by Tyriver and two by Steltenpohl. The Titans also received hits from Amie Heinzelman (Fr. • Monroe) and Jennelle Schmidt (So. • Richfield).

Coe College compiled five hits, including two by April Kalmes.

As a result of a first-round bye and a win in the second round, UW-Oshkosh, will not have to play a game on Friday (May 11). The Titans will play the first game Saturday (May 12) at 11 a.m.

Coe College, which is now 28-13 for the season, will face Augustana College (Ill.), at 2 p.m. Friday in an elimination game. Coe College played the tourney’s first game and beat the University of Chicago (Ill.), 2-1, in nine innings. Augustana College dropped its first game by a 6-3 margin to UW-Eau Claire.

Rachel Paulus’ home run in the top of the ninth gave UW-Eau Claire its second straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) women’s softball tournament title as the Blugolds defeated regular season champion UW-Oshkosh, 3-2, in the second championship game at Gelein Field in Carson Park on May 5.

The marathon 2 hour, 15-minute contest was dripping with drama as UW-Eau Claire earned the league’s automatic berth in the 59-team NCAA Division III championships, which get underway next week.

The Blugolds were the preseason pick to win their fourth straight WIAC championship this year but struggled to a 10-6 record and a fourth-place finish, while UW-Oshkosh went through the league with a 15-1 mark including 3-0 and 1-0 wins over UW-Eau Claire.

The two teams met three times in this weekend’s tournament with all three games decided by one run. UW-Eau Claire won both games that went nine innings, 4-3 and 3-2, while UW-Oshkosh won the first championship game, 2-1.

Blugold sophomore righthander Bri Sturm was sailing along with a one-hitter until the bottom of the seventh inning. That’s when leadoff hits by Jennelle Schmidt and Brianna Bilotti plus a one-hit single by Ashley Steltenpohl set the stage for Whitney Tyriver’s game-tying two-run single to left.

The Titans loaded the bases again in the eighth with two out but Sturm got Steltenpohl swinging to end the inning after falling behind 3-1 on the count.

After Paulus gave the Blugolds the lead in the ninth, Mallory McKinney came on in the bottom of the inning to pick up the save. After she retired the first two batters in order, the Titans put two runners on base before a flyout ended the game.

UW-Eau Claire had several chances to break the game open as they loaded the bases with no one out and failed to score in the fifth. They also loaded the bases with no one out in the sixth but scored only one run.

The Blugolds put their first run on the board in the third with doubles by Casey Leisgang and Mallory McKinney.

UW-Eau Claire outhit the Titans, 11-7, for the game but left 11 on the bases while UW-Oshkosh stranded nine. Leisgang and Kidnie each rapped three hits to lead the Blugold attack.

UW-Oshkosh has compiled a 34-9 season record, including 21 wins in its last 24 contests. UW-Eau Claire is 31-12 with victories in 11 of its last 14 games.

Titans Picked To Finish Second In WIAC Race

Three-time defending champion UW-Eau Claire is expected to win the 2007 WIAC women's softball championship, according to a preseason poll conducted by the league's sports information directors.

UW-Eau Claire claimed eight first-place votes in the preseason projections and enters the season ranked fifth in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association's NCAA Division III preseason poll. The Blugolds have won seven regular-season titles in program history and the 37 wins registered a year ago were the most for the program since back-to-back 40-win seasons in 1998 and 1999.

The 2007 squad returns seven of eight position players and two starting pitchers. Included in the returnees are junior Casey Leisgang, last year's WIAC Co-Position Player of Year, and senior Mallory McKinney, a two-time WIAC Pitcher of the Year honoree (2004, 2006). A year ago, Leisgang broke the school single-season record with 11 home runs and is just two shy of the Blugolds career mark of 21. McKinney set school single-season records with 26 wins, 183 strikeouts and 13 shutouts. Last season she pitched 65.1 consecutive scoreless innings and owns the Blugolds career record with 408 strikeouts and is within striking distance for career wins, innings pitched and shutouts.

UW-Oshkosh has registered back-to-back second-place finishes in the WIAC and is projected to finish in that spot again this spring. The Titans started the 2006 season with a 5-10 record, but won 22 of their last 29 games to end the year with 27 victories, the second-highest total in school history. Junior Ronessa Stampfli has earned the league's Pitcher of the Year award in back-to-back seasons and enters the 2007 campaign needing 25 strikeouts to establish a WIAC career record. She set a league single-season record with 294 strikeouts in 2006. Junior Whitney Tyriver claimed a share of the WIAC Position Player of the Year honor a year ago and is one of 10 returning players to register an at-bat from last season.

UW-Whitewater, picked to finish third in this year's league race, led the WIAC with 6.0 runs per game and a .382 on-base percentage last season. The Warhawks had nine different individuals belt a home run and return the top two sluggers in sophomore Suzanne Gersich (9) and senior Kyley Shramek (7).

UW-Superior received the remaining first-place vote in the predictions and is pegged to finish fourth. The Yellowjackets have claimed two WIAC tournament crowns (2002, 2004) and one WIAC regular-season title (2002) in head coach Roger Plachta's six seasons. Senior Erin Kegley is just the fourth individual in program history to claim All-WIAC first team honors three consecutive years and has earned All-America honors in ice hockey and softball. This year's squad boasts seven multi-sport athletes.

UW-La Crosse, which is predicted to finish fifth in the WIAC race, was 9-2 in one-run games a year ago and produced the most wins since the 2004 club that also had 19 victories. Senior Jenny Miller is the school's all-time leader with 39 stolen bases, while junior Shelly Monahan returns after missing last season with an injury.

UW-Stevens Point has won 20-plus games in 12 straight seasons and is the only WIAC team to win a NCAA Division III championship, claiming the 1998 crown. Senior Stephanie Anderson returns after missing most of last season with an injury. The Pointers are picked to finish sixth in the league.

UW-River Falls junior Brittany Rathbun led the NCAA Division III and established a conference single-season record with nine saves in 2006. Falcons head coach Faye Perkins is the winningest coach in WIAC history with 352 victories and enters the season needing just five wins to reach 400 in her 20-year coaching career. UW-River Falls is predicted to land in the seventh spot in the conference race.

UW-Platteville has five returning players that hit at least two home runs during the 2006 campaign, including sophomore Tera Burr, who was the Pioneers' first all-region selection since 2003. The Pioneers, who will play two home doubleheaders under lights for the first time in the 10-year history of the UW-Platteville softball complex, are predicted to fall in the eighth slot in the WIAC.

UW-Stout returns its entire outfield from last season, including junior Jackie Juan. The Blue Devils have no seniors on a team that is expected to finish ninth in the WIAC.

Tyriver Among Comeback Award Finalists

Whitney TyriverThe V Foundation for Cancer Research has named UW-Oshkosh's Whitney Tyriver (Jr. • Oshkosh) as one of its nine finalists for the seventh annual V Foundation Comeback Award. The award is presented in conjunction with ESPN and the recipient will be announced during ESPN's basketball Final Four/NIT weekend coverage.

The other finalists are Warren Carter of the University of Illinois, Kaitlyn McCormick of Bethany College, Ashley McMillen of Syracuse University, Lauren Mueller of Converse College, Michael Neal of the University of Oklahoma, Ralphanee' Peyton of Wayne State University, Ann-Marie Torp of Metro State College and the United States Military Academy Women's Basketball Team.

The annual award is open to men and women collegiate basketball student-athletes in all NCAA divisions. It is awarded to an individual or a team who has accomplished a personal triumph in the face of true adversity, be it in health, life or moral dilemma.

The award is presented in memory of Jim Valvano, the late basketball coach and ESPN commentator, whose personal battle with cancer inspired the creation of The V Foundation. In his memorable speech at ESPN's inaugural ESPY Awards announcing the creation of The V Foundation, Valvano's "Don't Give Up … Don't Ever Give Up!"® motto created a legacy from which the Comeback Award has been created.

Tyriver was diagnosed with a rare cerebral condition called Pseudo Tumor Cerebri - a narrowing of the blood vessels at the base of the skull, causing excruciating headaches and seizures. She was not accurately diagnosed until the spring of her senior year in high school - and prior to that she went through many surgeries for different diagnosed ailments that doctors believed to be the cause of her discomfort.

Despite being bedridden for a month of basketball season and losing 20 pounds, she was able to comeback and lead her Oshkosh West High School team to the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) Division 1 state title. She now competes as an all-conference performer in both basketball and softball at UW-Oshkosh.

Tyriver has started 61 of the 79 basketball games that she has played in for UW-Oshkosh the past three seasons. Her career statistical totals include 676 points, 422 rebounds and 161 assists. This past season, Tyriver received All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) first team honors after averaging 15.6 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.1 assists per contest. She led the WIAC in free-throw percentage (.867) while ranking third in scoring and fourth in assists.

In softball, Tyriver has started all 81 games for the Titans the past two-plus seasons. She has hit .393 during her career with six home runs and 31 runs batted in. Last spring, Tyriver shared WIAC Position Player of the Year honors after hitting .412 with four home runs and 21 runs batted in. Through four games this spring, Tyriver is hitting .333 with one home run and four runs batted in.

The 2007 Comeback Award recipient will be selected by an eight-member sub-committee of The V Foundation Board of Directors. Past recipients of the award are Katie Douglas of Purdue University (2001), Kristin Koetsier of Western Michigan University (2002), Justin Allen of Arizona State University (2003), Jamie Carey of the University of Texas (2004), Kayla Burt of the University of Washington (2005) and Grant Dykstra of Western Washington University (2006).

The V Foundation for Cancer Research was founded in 1993 by ESPN and the late Jim Valvano, legendary North Carolina State University men's basketball coach and ESPN commentator. Since 1993 The Foundation has raised more than $60 million used to fund cancer research grants nationwide.
