Titans Seeded Second For WIAC Tournament

Stevens Point's Zenoff Park will be the place Friday (May 2) and Saturday (May 3) as UW-Stevens Point hosts the 2008 WIAC Women's Softball Tournament. This is the third time that UW-Stevens Point has hosted the WIAC Tournament, with the others coming in 1991 and 1999.

Action begins Friday at 9 a.m. with a single-elimination game between eighth-seeded UW-Superior (13-21/2-12 WIAC) and ninth-seeded UW-Stout (7-28/0-16 WIAC). After that it is all double-elimination with two games going simultaneously for the majority of time. There will be at least 15 games played with the possibility of a 16th contest. The WIAC Tournament champion receives an automatic entry to the 59-team NCAA Division III Championship.

UW-Eau Claire is the two-time defending WIAC Tournament champion, winning as a fourth seed over top-seeded UW-Oshkosh last year.
The Blugolds and Titans faced each other three times in last year’s tournament as UW-Eau Claire won the first contest 4-3 in nine innings. In the championship round the Titans got the Blugolds by a score of 2-1 to force a 16th and deciding game. In that contest, UW-Eau Claire hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning to capture the title by a score of 3-2.

Top-seeded UW-Whitewater (28-6/14-2 WIAC) won this league's regular season title after being predicted to finish fifth in the preseason. Since getting swept by UW-Oshkosh on April 17, the Warhawks have won straight 12 games. The last time the Warhawks won the conference tournament title was in 2003. Only twice since 1999 and just six times since 1986 has the top-seeded team won the WIAC Tournament.

Last year’s regular season champion and this year’s preseason favorite UW-Oshkosh (24-8/10-3 WIAC) is the tournament's No. 2 seed. After starting the season with a 6-6 record, the Titans have won 18 of their last 20 games. UW-Oshkosh is seeking its first WIAC Tournament crown since 1985.

Pitching is once again carrying the Titans as they lead the WIAC with a 1.62 earned run average. 2007 NCAA Division III All-America pitcher Ronessa Stampfli (Sr. • Brodhead) has compiled a 13-3 record and a 1.50 earned run average this season. She has totaled 946 strikeouts during her career, the seventh-highest total in NCAA Division III history. Pitching mate Amy Sullivan (Sr. • Oshkosh) owns a 9-5 record with 124 strikeouts and a 1.66 earned run average this season.

Offensively, UW-Oshkosh has three players hitting over .350 this season. Outfielder Whitney Tornow (So. • Neenah) has hit .490 with five home runs, nine doubles, 17 runs scored and 27 runs batted in. Catcher Dani Olsen (Sr. • Verona) owns a .375 batting average with four home runs, two triples, four doubles, 28 runs scored and 17 runs batted in. Outfielder Amie Heinzelman (So. • Monroe) possesses a .359 batting average with four home runs, four triples, 13 doubles, 40 runs scored and 21 runs batted in.

UW-Oshkosh's participation in the WIAC Tournament begins Friday at 11 a.m. against seventh-seeded UW-Platteville (13-19/7-8 WIAC). The only regular season meeting between the two teams was held April 3 and the result was a 2-1 victory for UW-Platteville.

If UW-Oshkosh defeats UW-Platteville, the Titans will play the winner between third-seeded UW-Eau Claire (25-9/10-4 WIAC) and sixth-seeded UW-La Crosse (22-15/8-8 WIAC) at 4 p.m. on Friday. If UW-Platteville defeats UW-Oshkosh, the Titans will battle the loser of the game between UW-Eau Claire and UW-La Crosse at 2:30 p.m. on Friday. The tournament continues on Saturday at 9 a.m.
