LeRoy Dives To NCAA All-America Mention

Rachel HeitkampErin LeRoyAll-America efforts by senior Erin LeRoy in the one and three-meter diving events helped the UW-Oshkosh women's swimming and diving team place 19th at the NCAA Division III Championship held Thursday through Saturday (March 14-16) in Oxford, Ohio.

Kenyon College (Ohio) scored 577 points to win its 19th NCAA Division III title in 20 years, while defending champion Denison University (Ohio) finished second with 418. Rounding out the top-five teams were third-place Emory University (Ga.) with 368 points, fourth-place Williams College (Mass.) with 257.5 points and fifth-place Johns Hopkins University (Md.) with 233.

UW-Oshkosh scored 49 points to share 19th place in the team standings with DePauw University (Ind.). The Titans have now finished in the top 20 at four of the last six NCAA Division III Championships, including a 15th-place ranking in 1998.

LeRoy scored the bulk of UW-Oshkosh's team points by placing second in the one meter diving and third in the three meter diving. Senior Lindsay Moore of Springfield College (Mass.) won the one meter diving title on Thursday with 391.45 points, while LeRoy finished second with 384.80. In the three meter diving held Saturday, sophomore Rachel Gealy of Williams College scored 446.30 points to successfully defend her title, while Moore finished second with 434.50 points and LeRoy third with 427.55. Last year, LeRoy placed fourth in the three meter diving and 10th in the one meter diving.

Also competing at this year's NCAA Division III Championship for UW-Oshkosh was sophomore Rachel Heitkamp. Heitkamp finished ninth in the three meter diving with 375.55 points and 10th in the one meter diving with 345.15 points to narrowly miss receiving All-America accolades, an honor that is awarded to the top-eight finishers. Last year, Heitkamp finished third in the one meter diving and ninth in the three meter diving.

Titans Place Third At WIAC Championship

Rachel HeitkampErin LeRoyThe UW-La Crosse women's swimming and diving team captured the 2002 WIAC title following completion of competition at the three-day event held February 21-23 in Whitewater.

The Eagles finished with 1223 points to win their sixth title in school history. UW-Stevens Point, which had won the previous two championships finished second with 1216 points. UW-Oshkosh placed third with 616 points followed by fourth-place UW-Eau Claire with 599, fifth-place UW-River Falls with 393 and sixth-place UW-Whitewater with 377.

UW-La Crosse claimed eight individual championships on their way to the team title. Fallon Toomsen won three individual titles to lead the Eagles. She won the 400 yard individual medley with a conference record time of 4:38.59 and the 200 yard individual medley in 2:11.60. Toomsen also won the 200 yard backstroke in 2:07.31.

UW-La Crosse's Krista Melvin won the 100 yard freestyle and 200 yard freestyle with times of 54.09 and 1:56.00, respectively. Karrin Lick won the 500 yard freestyle in 5:19.35 and the 1,650 yard freestyle in 18:18.99. Lick's title in the 500 freestyle was her second consecutive in the league. Anna Meyer claimed the 100 yard backstroke title for the third time in her career with a conference record time of 56.97, while Elizabeth Miles won the 200 yard butterfly in 2:10.47. The Eagles' 800 yard freestyle relay team of Alexis Fink, Melvin, Toomsen and Lick won with a conference record time of 7:51.32.

UW-Stevens Point won four relay titles and four individual crowns in the meet. The Pointers won 200 yard freestyle relay with a conference record time of 1:36.80, while the 400 yard medley relay team finished first with a time of 3:58.19. Jennifer Randall, Mary Thone, Jean Hughes and Amy Rockwell teamed to win the 200 yard medley relay with a league record time of 1:47.98 and the 400 yard freestyle relay in 3:35.69.

UW-Stevens Point's Christine Sammons became a four-time league champion in two events. She won the 100 yard breaststroke with a conference record time of 1:07.05 and the 200 yard breaststroke in 2:24.84. Alissa Bartz and Mary Thone also won individual titles for the Pointers. Bartz won the 50 yard freestyle in 24.24, while Thone won the 100 yard butterfly for the second consecutive season in 59.07.

UW-Oshkosh's Erin LeRoy won both diving events. She became a two-time league champion in the three meter event with a score of 487.55. LeRoy won the one-meter event with 416.30 points. UW-Oshkosh's Rachel Heitkamp finished second in both diving events with scores of 413.65 in the one meter and 458.05 in the three meter.

UW-La Crosse head coach Rich Pein was named the WIAC Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season and the third time in his career. He also won the award in 1992 and 1995.

Titans Win 11 Events To Defeat Blugolds

Kelly ColeLiz TierneyWinning 11 of 15 events, including three by both freshman Kelly Cole and junior Liz Tierney, the UW-Oshkosh women's swimming and diving team defeated perennial WIAC power UW-Eau Claire, 167-113, on Saturday (February 9) in Albee Hall. The victory completed UW-Oshkosh's 2001-02 dual meet schedule with a record of 7-3.

Cole won the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 1:04.94, the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 2:19.74 and the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 2:05.35, while Tierney won the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 1:03.69, 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:20.40 and the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:37.11.

Other event winners for the Titans were senior Erin LeRoy in the one meter diving with a score of 279.30 and the three meter diving with a mark of 291.85, freshman Katie Andreska in the 1,000 yard freestyle with a time of 11:32.87, senior Jennifer Collings in the 400 yard individual medley with a time of 5:03.83 and sophomore Kristy Kintop in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:14.88. LeRoy's performance in the one meter diving established a school record.

UW-Oshkosh's second-place finishes went to Andreska in the 500 yard freestyle (5:37.89) and 200 yard breaststroke (2:39.28), senior Jennifer Broadley in the 100 yard backstroke (1:05.46), 200 yard backstroke (2:21.56) and 200 yard freestyle (2:05.68), Collings in the 200 yard butterfly (2:27.83), sophomore Jennifer Feather in the 100 yard freestyle (57.71), sophomore Julie Gibbons in the 1,000 yard freestyle (11:42.12) and sophomore Rachel Heitkamp in the one meter diving (265.95) and three meter diving (276.80).

Eagles Fly Past Titans

Kelly ColeErin LeRoyUW-La Crosse won six individual events and both relays to defeat UW-Oshkosh, 139-98, in a women's swimming and diving meet held Saturday (January 19) in La Crosse.

UW-Oshkosh had five first-place finishes in the meet, including senior Erin LeRoy who won both the one and three-meter diving events with scores of 250.55 and 265.80, respectively.

Also winning events for the Titans were senior Jennifer Broadley with a time of 5:40.75 in the 500 yard freestyle, freshman Kelly Cole with a time of 1:05.06 in the 100 yard backstroke and junior Liz Tierney with a time of 1:11.39 in the 100 yard breaststroke.

UW-Oshkosh's second-place finishes belonged to Broadley in the 200 yard freestyle (2:07.35), sophomore Julie Gibbons in the 100 yard backstroke (1:08.79), sophomore Rachel Heitkamp in the three meter diving (255.45), sophomore Beth Mathe in the 500 yard freestyle (5:57.17) and Tierney in the 100 yard butterfly (1:02.88).

Titans Outscore Lady Reds, Vikings

Rachel HeitkampLiz TierneyWinning five events, the UW-Oshkosh women's swimming and diving team posted victories of 79-32 over Carthage College and 69-44 over Lawrence University on Friday (January 18) in Albee Hall.

Junior Liz Tierney was a double-winner for the Titans, placing first in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 1:02.95 and the 200 yard individual medley with a time of 2:19.72.

Other UW-Oshkosh victors were sophomore Rachel Heitkamp in the one meter diving with a score of 281.25, sophomore Kristy Kintop in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:14.45 and senior Erin LeRoy with a mark of 278.30 in the three meter diving.

Second-place finishes for the Titans went to freshman Kelly Cole in the 200 yard freestyle (2:05.38) and 100 yard backstroke (1:04.43), Heitkamp in the three meter diving (274.40) and LeRoy in the one meter diving (275.50).

Titans Splash Past Pioneers, Red Hawks

Rachel HeitkampErin LeRoyThe UW-Oshkosh women's swimming and diving team defeated Carroll College, 151-65, and Ripon College, 163-54, in dual meets held Saturday (December 8) in Albee Hall.

The Titans claimed first place finishes in 11 of the 13 events and had the top three finishers in four of those events.

Senior Erin LeRoy won the three meter diving with a score of 299.35 and added a second-place finish in the one meter diving with a score of 275.20. Sophomore Rachel Heitkamp recorded the opposite for the Titans, winning the one meter diving with a score of 277.15 and finishing second in the three meter diving with a score of 229.15.

Junior Liz Tierney chipped in by winning the 100 yard backstroke and finishing second in the 100 yard breaststroke with times of 1:05.66 and 1:14.88, for the Titans, respectively.
