Dives To All-America Accolades
UW-Oshkosh's Rachel Heitkamp
(Jr. Mequon) became an All-American for the second and third time
during her career when she placed second in the one meter and fourth in
the three meter diving events at the NCAA Division III Women's Swimming
and Diving Championship held Thursday-Saturday (March 13-15) in Atlanta,
Ga.
Heitkamp, UW-Oshkosh's lone entrant in the
NCAA Division III Championship, finished second in the one meter diving
with a score of 383.85. Cady Kastner of Hamilton College (N.Y.) won the
event with a score of 390.30. Finishing third was Kelley Anderson of Allegheny
College (Pa.) with a count of 382.05. In 2001, Heitkamp finished third
in the one meter diving at the NCAA Division III Championship with a score
of 371.35.
Off the three meter diving board, Heitkamp
finished fourth with a score of 430.00. Caroline Crocker and Rachel Gealy,
both of Williams College (Mass.), placed first and second with marks of
456.50 and 455.25, respectively. Kristen Simms of The College of New Jersey
finished third with a score of 432.05, while Alison of Mellage of Springfield
College (Mass.) finished fifth with a figure of 420.80.
Heitkamp and Gealy were both named NCAA Division
III Diver of the Year following the competition.
Kenyon College (Ohio) scored 560.5 points
to win its 18th NCAA Division III women's swimming and diving title. Williams
College finished second with 350 points, while Emory University (Ga.)
was third with 298 points, Denison University (Ohio) fourth with 288 and
The College of Wooster (Ohio) fifth with 203. Counting all of its points
from Heitkamp, UW-Oshkosh finished 30th in the team scoring with 32 points.
In all, 53 teams scored points at this year's championship.
Heitkamp Captures Diving Titles
At WIAC Championship

Rachel Heitkamp (Jr. Mequon)
won a pair of diving events as the UW-Oshkosh women's swimming and
diving team finished fourth at the WIAC Championship held Thursday-Saturday
(Feb. 20-22) in Stevens Point.
UW-La Crosse, aided by 11 record-breaking
performances, scored 899 points to successfully defend its league
title, while UW-Stevens Point finished second with 872 points. UW-Eau
Claire finished third in the six-team meet with 504 points, while
UW-Oshkosh finished fourth with 431, UW-River Falls fifth with 269
and UW-Whitewater sixth with 241.
Heitkamp was named the "Outstanding
Diver of the WIAC Championship" after claiming titles in both
the one meter and three meter diving events. She won the one meter
diving with a score of 437.60, while Sarah Thayer of UW-La Crosse
finished second with a mark of 365.40. Off the three meter board,
Heitkamp finished first with a score of 486.65, while Thayer finished
second with a tally of 404.95. Last year, Heitkamp finished second
to teammate Erin LeRoy in both diving events, compiling scores of
413.65 off the one meter board and 458.05 off the three meter. In
2001, Heitkamp won the one meter diving title with a score of 416.35.
While UW-Oshkosh failed to record a
second-place finish, the Titans did rank third once and fourth four
times. UW-Oshkosh's third-place finish came in the 200 yard freestyle
relay, where the quartet of Nicole Ciano (Fr. DeForest),
Kelly Cole (So. West Bend), Jennifer Feather (Jr.
Oak Creek) and Joanna Gibbons (Fr. Marathon) swam to a time
of 1:42.92. UW-La Crosse won the 200 yard freestyle relay with a
record time of 1:36.45.
Placing fourth for the Titans were
Andrea Andreska (Fr. South Milwaukee) in the one meter diving
with a score of 339.55, Ciano in the 100 yard backstroke with a
time of 1:01.37 and Liz Tierney (Sr. La Crosse) in the 200
yard individual medley with a time of 2:15.87. UW-Oshkosh's 800
yard freestyle relay team of Cole, Joanna Gibbons, Julie Gibbons
(Jr. Marathon) and Amy Haug (Fr. Milwaukee) also finished
fourth with a time of 8:16.88. Elizabeth Herder of UW-Stevens Point
won the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 58.99, while Fallon Toomsen
of UW-La Crosse captured the 200 yard individual medley with a record
time of 2:10.46 and UW-La Crosse the 800 yard freestyle relay with
a record time of 7:49.90.
Other award winners at the 2003 championship
were Toomsen of UW-La Crosse as the "Outstanding Swimmer of
the WIAC Championship," Jen Randall of UW-Stevens Point as
the Judy Kruckman WIAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Al Boelk
of UW-Stevens Point as the WIAC Coach of the Year. |
Blugolds Acquire Win Over Titans
 Each team won eight events, but
in the end UW-Eau Claire's sweep of the top-three finishes in both the
100 yard breaststroke and 100 yard freestyle stood out as the Blugolds
defeated UW-Oshkosh, 159-141, in a women's swimming and diving contest
held Saturday (Feb. 8) in Eau Claire.
UW-Oshkosh had three double-winners in the
meet as Julie Gibbons (Jr. Marathon) and Liz Tierney (Sr.
La Crosse) each finished first in a pair of swimming events.
Gibbons won the 500 yard freestyle with a
time of 5:10.00 and the 1,000 yard freestyle in 11:25.06, while Tierney
placed first in the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:21.50 and the
400 yard individual medley in 5:00.85. Tierney also was runner-up in the
200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:37.57.
Rachel Heitkamp (Jr. Mequon) took
top honors in both diving events, winning competition off the one meter
board with a score of 266.90 and the three meter board with a count of
260.45.
Other event winners for the Titans were Nicole
Ciano (Fr. DeForest) in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of
1:04.03 and Joanna Gibbons (Fr. Marathon) in the 200 yard backstroke
with an effort of 2:20.51.
In addition to Tierney and the 200 yard freestyle
relay (1:47.37) and 200 yard medley relay (1:58.76) teams, UW-Oshkosh
also received a pair of second-place finishes from Katie Andreska (So.
South Milwaukee). Andreska finished behind the winner in the 400
yard individual medley with a time of 5:08.84 and the 1,000 yard freestyle
with a performance of 11:27.47.
Heitkamp Takes Diving Titles At
UW-Oshkosh Invite
Performing in her own familiar
surroundings, UW-Oshkosh's Rachel Heitkamp (Jr. Mequon) won both
the one and three-meter diving titles at the UW-Oshkosh Diving Invitational
held Sunday (Jan. 19) in Albee Hall.
Heitkamp, who won both events in a home dual
meet against UW-La Crosse on Saturday (Jan. 18), outscored 10 other contestants
on Sunday in the one meter diving and nine in the three.
Heitkamp compiled a score of 428.40 in winning
the one meter title, with UW-Eau Claire's Adria Bye and Andrea Lashbrook
finishing second and third with marks of 358.00 and 294.45, respectively.
Off the three meter board, Heitkamp finished first with a score of 469.60,
while Bye placed second at 371.50 and Lashbrook third at 335.60.
UW-Oshkosh also had three other divers in
the meet, Shannon Abramczyk (Sr. South Milwaukee), Andrea Andreska
(Fr. South Milwaukee) and Pamela Van Aacken (So. Colgate).
In the one meter diving, Andreska finished
fourth with a score of 292.55, Abramczyk sixth at 262.30 and Van Aacken
ninth at 228.24. The three meter diving event saw Abramczyk finish fourth
with a figure of 323.25, Van Aacken seventh at 257.50 and Andreska eighth
at 253.60.
Defending WIAC Champs Double-up
Titans
 Defending WIAC women's swimming
and diving champion UW-La Crosse registered 19 of a possible 26 first
or second-place finishes to double-up UW-Oshkosh, 164-79, in a dual meet
held Saturday (Jan. 18) in Albee Hall. The competition was the first for
the Titans since they hosted the UW-Oshkosh Invitational on December 6-7.
UW-La Crosse won all 11 swimming events in
the meet and recorded eight second-place finishes. UW-Oshkosh's two victories
went to Rachel Heitkamp (Jr. Mequon), who both the one meter and
three meter diving events.
Nicole Ciano (Fr. DeForest) highlighted
UW-Oshkosh's second-place finishes by ranking as the runner-up in the
50 yard freestyle with a time of 26.36 and the 100 yard backstroke with
a time of 1:03.43. Liz Tierney (Sr. La Crosse) also finished second
for the Titans, posting a time of 1:12.09 in the 100 yard breaststroke.
UW-Oshkosh's second-place performances were completed by the times of
1:58.13 and 1:51.53 turned in by the 200 yard medley and 200 yard freestyle
relay teams, respectively.
Titans Fall Short In Bid To Win
Own Invite
 Winning eight events and finishing
second in nine, the UW-Oshkosh women's swimming and diving team narrowly
placed second in its own four-team invitational held Friday and Saturday
(Dec. 6-7) in Albee Hall.
UW-Eau Claire, which swept the top-three
spots in two events while winning eight others, took first in the team
standings with 610 points. UW-Oshkosh finished a close second with 599
points, while UW-Whitewater finished third with 355 points and UW-River
Falls fourth with 315.
Rachel Heitkamp (Jr. Mequon) was UW-Oshkosh's
lone multiple winner, taking first in the one meter diving with a score
of 404.00 and the three meter diving with a mark of 434.70.
The Titans also received first place finishes
from Katie Andreska (So. South Milwaukee) in the 400 yard individual
medley with a time of 5:07.42, Nicole Ciano (Fr. DeForest) in the
100 yard backstroke with a time of 1:03.59, Kelly Cole (So. West
Bend) in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 2:04.58, Joanna Gibbons
(Fr. Marathon) in the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 2:18.50
and Liz Tierney (Sr. La Crosse) in the 100 yard butterfly with
a time of 1:05.10.
UW-Oshkosh's lone relay win came in the 400
yard medley relay, where the Titans posted a first-place time of 4:16.15.
Second-place finishes for UW-Oshkosh went
to Cole in both the 200 yard backstroke (2:19.84) and 500 yard freestyle
(5:37.13), Gibbons in the 100 yard backstroke (1:05.20), Julie Gibbons
(Jr. Marathon) in the 1,650 yard freestyle (19:49.51) and Tierney
in the 200 yard individual medley (2:21.42).
The Titans also finished second in the 200
yard medley relay (1:57.07), 200 yard freestyle relay (1:45.06), 400 yard
freestyle relay (3:50.40) and 800 yard freestyle relay (8:36.63).

 Nicole Ciano (Fr. DeForest)
and Rachel Heitkamp (Jr. Mequon) each won two events as the UW-Oshkosh
women's swimming and diving team defeated Lawrence University, 159.5-82.5,
on Wednesday (Nov. 20) in Appleton.
Ciano swam to first-place times of 27.18
in the 50 yard freestyle and 2:20.94 in the 200 yard backstroke, while
Heitkamp posted winning scores of 259.45 in the one meter and 277.05 in
the three meter diving events.
Other event winners for the Titans were Kelly
Cole (So. West Bend) in the 200 yard freestyle (2:05.35) and Liz
Tierney (Sr. La Crosse) in the 200 yard butterfly (2:28.84). UW-Oshkosh
also won the 200 yard medley and 200 yard freestyle relays with times
of 1:58.24 and 1:47.70, respectively.
Second-place finishes for UW-Oshkosh belonged
to Shannon Abramczyk (Sr. South Milwaukee) in the one meter diving
(197.10), Andrea Andreska (Fr. South Milwaukee) in the three meter
diving, Cole in the 100 yard freestyle (58.40), Joanna Gibbons (Fr.
Marathon) in the 200 yard freestyle (2:08.80) and 200 yard backstroke
(2:21.97) and Julie Gibbons (Jr. Julie Gibbons) in the 500 yard
freestyle (5:38.31) and 1,000 yard freestyle (11:41.13).
