Porter Acquires All-America Accolades
At NCAA Championship
UW-Oshkosh's Renee Porter (Sr.
Wauwatosa) earned All-America status in two events and All-America honorable
mention recognition in another at the NCAA Division III Women's Swimming and Diving
Championship held this past weekend (March 10-12) in Holland, Mich.
Porter, UW-Oshkosh's lone representative at the
meet, finished third in the 50-yard freestyle and seventh in the 100-yard freestyle
to gain All-America accolades. She also placed 14th in the 100-yard backstroke
to receive All-America honorable mention recognition. All-America honors were
awarded to the top eight finishers in each event.
Porter's highest ranking came in the 50-yard freestyle,
where she finished third with a school-record time of 23.87. Marie Marsman of
Carleton College (Minn.) won the event with a time of 22.98, while Kate Kovenock
of Connecticut College finished second in 23.42. Porter placed seventh in the
50-yard freestyle at the 2001 NCAA Division III Championship with a time of 24.27.
Porter finished seventh in the 100-yard freestyle
with a time of 52.28. Marsman won the event with a meet-record time of 49.46,
while Kovenock placed second in 50.64. Porter swam to a time of 52.04 in the trials
to set her second UW-Oshkosh record of the meet.
Porter's 14th-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke
was the result of a time of 59.27. Brittany Sasser of Amherst College (Mass.)
won the event with a time of 56.03, while Jessica Yankura of Williams College
(Mass.) finished second in 57.44. Porter placed 16th in the 100-yard backstroke
at the 2001 NCAA Division III Championship with a time of 1:00.00.
UW-Oshkosh scored 31 points, all by Porter, to
tie John Carroll University (Ohio) for 30th place in the team standings. Emory
University (Ga.) captured the team title with 399.5 points, while defending champion
Kenyon College (Ohio) finished second with 313, Denison University (Ohio) third
with 305.5, Williams College fourth with 272.5 and Amherst College fifth with
243. A total of 54 schools scored points at this year's championship.
Porter To Swim At NCAA Championship
Renee Porter (Sr. Wauwatosa)
will be UW-Oshkosh's lone representative at this weekend's NCAA Division III Women's
Swimming and Diving Championship in Holland, Mich. The three-day meet begins Thursday
(March 10) morning and concludes Saturday (March 12) evening at the Holland Community
Aquatic Center.
Porter qualified for the NCAA Division III Championship in three events. She will
compete in the 50-yard freestyle on Thursday, the 100-yard backstroke on Friday
(March 11) and the 100-yard freestyle on Saturday. Porter won all three events
at the WIAC Championship held Feb. 17-19 in Whitewater.
Porter swims at the NCAA Division III Championship with a 10th-seed time of 24.09
in the 50-yard freestyle. She also ranks 11th in the 100-yard backstroke with
a school-record time of 58.76 and 22nd in the 100-yard freestyle with a performance
of 52.91.
Marie Marsman of Carleton College (Minn.) is the top seed in two of Porter's events,
the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.78 and the 100-yard freestyle with a venture
of 49.97. Brittany Sasser of Amherst College (Mass.) is seeded first in the 100-yard
backstroke with an effort of 56.15. The top eight finishers in each event gain
NCAA Division III All-America recognition.
Porter is making her second appearance at the NCAA
Division III Championship. In 2001, she finished seventh at the meet in the 50-yard
freestyle with a time of 24.27 and 16th in the 100-yard backstroke with a performance
of 1:00.00.
UW-Oshkosh placed 25th at last year's NCAA Division III Championship with 40 points.
Kenyon College (Ohio) won last year's national meet with 507 points.
Titans Finish Fourth At WIAC Championship
Renee Porter (Sr. • Wauwatosa) won three
events and was named Swimmer of the Meet as the UW-Oshkosh women’s swimming
and diving team finished fourth at the WIAC Championship held Thursday through
Saturday (Feb. 17-19) in Whitewater.
UW-La Crosse scored a meet-record 1,297.5 points to capture its fourth straight
WIAC title and ninth overall. UW- Stevens Point placed second in the six-team
meet with 1,247 points, while UW-Eau Claire ranked third with 777.5 points, UW-Oshkosh
fourth with 466, UW-River Falls fifth with 361 and UW-Whitewater sixth with 355.
UW-Oshkosh finished fourth at last year’s meet with 365 points.
UW-La Crosse claimed the team title after winning eight individual events and
three relays. The Eagles were led by Carlene Empanger’s first-place efforts
in the 200-yard freestyle, 500-yard freestyle and 1,650-yard freestyle. She also
swam on two of UW-La Crosse’s three first-place relay teams. UW-La Crosse’s
Sarah Thayer was named Diver of the Meet after finishing first in a pair of diving
events.
Porter led UW-Oshkosh by winning the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.09, the
100-yard freestyle with a performance of 52.91 and the 100-yard backstroke with
an effort of 58.76. She also won all three events at the 2001 WIAC Championship.
In the relays, Porter was a member of four UW-Oshkosh teams that placed in the
top five. She swam on the 400-yard medley relay team that finished third in 4:08.28,
the 200-yard medley relay team that placed fourth in 1:54.75, the 400-yard freestyle
relay team that ranked fourth in 3:45.79 and the 200-yard freestyle relay team
that charted fifth in 1:42.30.
Joining Porter as a member of UW-Oshkosh’s relay teams that placed in the
top five were JoAnna Gibbons (Jr. • Marathon) and Brittany Tobakos (Fr.
• DeForest). Sarah Schettle (So. • Oshkosh) was UW-Oshkosh’s
fourth participant in the 200-yard medley and 400-yard medley relay races, while
Emily Wirth (Fr. • Appleton) was the Titans’ fourth actor in the 200-yard
freestyle and 400-yard freestyle relay events.
Schettle concluded UW-Oshkosh’s top efforts by registering a fifth-place
time of 2:32.59 in the 200-yard breaststroke.
UW-Eau Claire's Rob Welcher and UW-Stevens Point's Al Boelk were voted Co-Coaches
of the Year, while UW-La Crosse’s Anne Melvin was selected as the winner
of the WIAC’s Judy Kruckman Scholar-Athlete Award.
Titans Fall To Lady Reds, Vikings
The UW-Oshkosh women's swimming
and diving team won two individual events, while losing a pair of dual meets with
Carthage College and Lawrence University on Saturday (Jan. 8) in Albee Hall.
The Titans lost to Lawrence University 67-45, and Carthage College, 56-49.
UW-Oshkosh's two event victories belonged to Renee Porter (Sr. • Wauwatosa)
in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.11 and Leslie Clark (Fr. • Appleton)
in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 49.96.
Brittany Tobakos (Fr. • DeForest) raced to a second place finish in the
200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:23.46, as did Sarah Schettle (So.
• Oshkosh) in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:11.58. JoAnna Gibbons
(Jr. • Marathon), Porter, Schettle and Tobakos also participated on a 200-yard
relay team that placed second with a time of 1:59.05.
UW-Oshkosh recorded four third-place finishes, including two in the diving competition
by Jennifer Fisher (Fr. • Sturgeon Bay). She scored 112.65 points in the
one-meter diving and 105.50 points in three-meter diving. Other third-place efforts
went to Tobakos in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:05.63 and Katie Andreska
(Sr. • South Milwaukee) in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:45.80.
Danielle Polzin (Jr. • Oshkosh) also placed fourth for the Titans in the
200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:14.89. Also placing fourth was the Titans'
400-yard freestyle relay team of Andreska, Clark, Gibbons and Amy Matelski (Fr.
• Elkhorn). The UW-Oshkosh quartet posted a time of 4:10.65.
Titans Take Fourth In Own Invite

Sarah Schettle (So. • Oshkosh) and Renee
Porter (Sr. • Wauwatosa) took first place in three individual events as
the UW-Oshkosh women's swimming and diving team finished fourth in its own invitational
held Friday and Saturday (Dec. 3-4) at the Boldt Natatorium in Appleton.
UW-Eau Claire captured the team title with 721 points. The Blugolds were followed
by second-place UW-Whitewater with 386 points, third-place Lawrence University
with 373, fourth-place UW-Oshkosh with 271, fifth-place Ripon College with 136
and sixth-place Marquette University with 106.
Schettle took first-place in both the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:11.47
and the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:37.14. She also helped the Titans
place third in the 200-yard and 400-yard medley relays with a times of 2:00.48
and 4:31.40, respectively.
Porter made her contribution to the Titans by winning the 100-yard backstroke
with a performance of 1:01.98. She then went on to take second in the 50-yard
freestyle with a time of 25.57 and the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 55.97.
She also swam on the third-place 200-yard medley and 400-yard medley relay teams
and the fourth-place 200-yard freestyle and 400-yard freestyle relay squads. The
200-yard freestyle relay team posted a time of 1:50.75, while the 400-yard freestyle
relay team recorded a time of 3:56.84.
Katie Andreska (Sr. • South Milwaukee) took second place in the 1,650-yard
freestyle with a time of 19:27.25. Brittany Tobakos (Fr. • DeForest) finished
off the Titans' top individual performances by taking third place in the 200-yard
individual medley with a time of 2:21.16. |
Pointers Splash Past Titans
The UW-Stevens Point women's
swimming and diving team took first in every event in defeating UW-Oshkosh, 161-71,
on Saturday (Oct. 22) in Stevens Point.
Finishing second for the UW-Oshkosh were Amy Matelski (Fr. • Elkhorn) in
the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:01.54, Kelly Cole (Sr. • West Bend)
in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:19.48, Katie Andreska (Sr. •
South Milwaukee) in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:45.52 and Sarah Schettle
(So. • Oshkosh) in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:37.25.
UW-Oshkosh's 200-yard freestyle relay team of JoAnna Gibbons (Jr. • Marathon),
Leah Klaybor (Fr. • Hales Corners), Elizabeth Polzin (Jr. • Oshkosh)
and Renee Porter (Sr. • Wauwatosa) placed second with a time of 1:54.25.
Placing third for UW-Oshkosh were Nicole Lewis (Fr. • Oconomowoc) in the
100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:04.19, Rebecca Pein (Fr. • La Crosse)
in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 3:17.80, Ashley Madaus (Fr. • Burlington)
in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 3:05.06, Gibbons in the 500-yard freestyle
with a time of 5:49.43 and Rebecca Triatik (Sr. • Malone) in the 200-yard
breaststroke with a time of 2:54.95.
The Titans' 200-yard freestyle relay team of Lewis, Matelski, Triatik and Erin
Donohoe (Fr. • Wauwatosa) placed third with a time of 1:57.07.
