Lady Reds Drop Titans In Season Finale

Mercedes BlanchThe UW-Oshkosh women's tennis team concluded its 2001-02 season with a 5-9 dual record following its 7-2 setback to Carthage College on Saturday (April 20) in Kenosha.

The Lady Reds (17-5) dominated the match by winning all six of the singles and one of the three doubles contests.

Winning doubles bouts for UW-Oshkosh were junior Debra Ashenbrenner and freshman Mercedes Blanch in the first flight and freshman Katherine Licht and junior Allison Orzech in the second. Ashenbrenner and Blanch defeated Kelly Mikkila and Kristine Meulendyke of Carthage College, 8-4, while Licht and Orzech defeated Christine Hamm and Jennifer Sturman of the Lady Reds, 9-7.

In singles play, Blanch dropped a tough 6-4, 6-4 decision to Hamm in the second flight, while Ashenbrenner lost a trying 7-5, 6-3 outing to Mikkila.

Titans Fall To Regals

Mercedes BlanchThe UW-Oshkosh women's tennis team was handcuffed on the west coast for the second straight day, dropping a 7-2 decision to California Lutheran University on Tuesday (March 19) in Thousand Oaks, Calif.

The match was the second of four to be held in California for the Titans, who will also play Whittier College on Wednesday (March 20) in Whittier and Willamette University on Thursday (March 21) in Claremont.

UW-Oshkosh (4-7) had little success against California Lutheran University (9-4), winning only one flight in singles and one in doubles. UW-Oshkosh's lone victory in singles play went to junior Allison Orzech, a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Annika Ludewig in the sixth flight.

UW-Oshkosh's number one doubles team of junior Debra Ashenbrenner and freshman Mercedes Blanch gained its victory due to an injury default. Blanch also dropped a 7-6, 4-6 (10-3) singles match in the second flight.

Titans Open Spring Slate With Loss

Debra AshenbrennerThe UW-Oshkosh women's tennis team opened its six-match spring schedule by suffering a 6-3 loss to Alliant International University on Monday (March 18) in San Diego, Calif.

UW-Oshkosh (4-6) will play four of its six spring matches in California, with other contests scheduled for Tuesday (March 19) against California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, Wednesday (March 20) against Whittier College in Whittier and Thursday (March 21) against Willamette University in Claremont.

Junior Debra Ashenbrenner took part in two of UW-Oshkosh's three victories, posting a 6-4, 6-7 (8-6) win at number one singles and teaming up with freshman Mercedes Blanch to win by default at number one doubles.

UW-Oshkosh also won at number two doubles, where junior Allison Orzech and freshman Kathleen Winter defeated Michelle Hart and Carmen Pugh by an 8-0 score.

Alliant International University, formerly U.S. International University, raised its dual meet record to 3-9 with the win.

Ashenbrenner, Blanch Win WIAC Doubles Title

Debra AshenbrennerMercedes BlanchJunior Debra Ashenbrenner and freshman Mercedes Blanch went undefeated in three matches to claim the number one doubles title at the WIAC Women's Tennis Tournament held Saturday and Sunday (Oct. 20-21) in Madison.

UW-Eau Claire scored 64 points to win the WIAC Tournament, while UW-Whitewater finished second with 50 points and UW-La Crosse third with 44. Combined with its first-place finish in the WIAC dual meet standings, UW-Eau Claire won the overall league championship for the ninth consecutive year. UW-Oshkosh finished fifth in the overall WIAC standings, placing fifth in the league tournament with 31 points and fifth in the dual meet standings with a 2-4 record.

Seeded third, Ashenbrenner and Blanch defeated sixth-seed Tammy and Tanya Petcher of UW-Stout, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, second-seed Kristen Mader and Jessica White of UW-La Crosse, 6-4, 6-0 and top-seed Alison Hover and Jenny Stafford of UW-Eau Claire, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4. In 1999, Ashenbrenner teamed with Jennifer Pekulik to claim the number one doubles championship.

Also in doubles play, UW-Oshkosh received fifth-place finishes from junior Allison Orzech and sophomore Diana Treu in the second flight and freshman Meghan Davis and Katherine Licht in the third.

In singles action, the Titans received a second-place finish from Ashenbrenner in the first flight and fifth-place finishes from Blanch in the second flight, Treu in the third flight and freshman Erin Connolly in the sixth. The third-seed Ashenbrenner dropped a 7-5, 6-1 decision to the top-seed Hover in the title match.

UW-Oshkosh resumes play on March 18 when it battles Alliant International University in San Diego, Calif. The Titans enter the contest with a 4-5 dual meet record.

Titans Split Final Regular Season Matches

Debra AshenbrennerDiana TreuThe UW-Oshkosh women's tennis team completed the regular season portion of its 2001 schedule by splitting a pair of dual meets on Saturday (Oct. 13) at the Oshkosh YMCA Tennis Center.

UW-Oshkosh defeated UW-Stout, 6-3, and lost to UW-Eau Claire, 9-0, to end the regular season with a 4-5 dual meet record (2-4 in the WIAC). Next weekend (October 20-21), UW-Oshkosh will compete at the WIAC Championship in Madison.

In UW-Oshkosh's victory over UW-Stout (2-6/0-5 WIAC), the Titans won all three doubles flights and three of the six singles contests. Junior Debra Ashenbrenner and sophomore Diana Treu were victorious in both their singles and doubles matches, while freshman Erin Connolly posted a win in singles play. Ashenbrenner won by a 6-0, 6-2 count in number one singles, while Treu had a 6-1, 6-3 win at number three and Connolly a 6-3, 6-1 victory at number six. UW-Oshkosh's sweep in doubles action included Ashenbrenner and freshman Mercedes Blanch winning at number one and Treu and junior Allison Orzech winning at number two by identical 8-1 scores.

In UW-Oshkosh's loss to UW-Eau Claire (7-1/6-0 WIAC), the Titans lost every singles flight in straight sets except number three where Treu lost by scores of 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. UW-Oshkosh's closest result in doubles play was in the first flight, an 8-6 loss by Ashenbrenner and Blanch.

Warhawks Fly Past Titans

Debra AshenbrennerThe UW-Oshkosh women's tennis team remained winless against WIAC opponents following its 7-2 loss to UW-Whitewater on Wednesday (Oct. 3) in Whitewater. The setback lowered the Titans' dual meet record to 2-4, including an 0-3 mark in the WIAC.

UW-Oshkosh won only one of its six singles contests as junior Debra Ashenbrenner claimed a 7-5, 6-3 victory in the first flight. The Titans lost a pair of tiebreakers in singles play as freshman Mercedes Blanch dropped a 6-2, 6-7 (6-8), 6-2 decision in the second flight while sophomore Diana Treu suffered a 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 7-5 setback in the third flight.

UW-Oshkosh had its only other victory in doubles play as Ashenbrenner and Blanch won by an 8-6 score in the first flight.

UW-Whitewater raises its dual meet record to 8-1 with the victory.

Titans Overwhelm Vikings

Diana TreuRecording a near-perfect match, the UW-Oshkosh women's tennis team defeated Lawrence University, 8-1, on Wednesday (Sept. 26) in Appleton. The Titans compiled their team score by winning five of six singles flights and all three doubles flights.

Winning singles flights for UW-Oshkosh were junior Debra Ashenbrenner by a 6-1, 6-2 score in the first, freshman Mercedes Blanch by a 6-1, 6-2 score in the second, sophomore Diana Treu by a 6-3, 6-0 score in the third, freshman Kathleen Winter by a 6-2, 6-4 score in the fifth and freshman Erin Connolly by a 6-1, 6-1 score in the sixth.

In doubles play, Ashenbrenner and Blanch won by an 8-1 score in the first, Treu and junior Allison Orzech won by an 8-2 total in the second and freshmen Meghan Davis and Katherine Licht by an 8-0 count in the third.

Lawrence University falls to 0-7 with the setback.

Falcons Nip Titans

Debra AshenbrennerVictories in four of the six singles flights helped the UW-River Falls women's tennis team edge UW-Oshkosh, 5-4, on Saturday (Sept. 22) in River Falls.

UW-Oshkosh (1-1) accounted for its match score by winning twice in both the singles and doubles flights. In singles play, junior Debra Ashenbrenner won a 6-4, 6-3 decision in the first flight while freshman Mercedes Blanch won a 6-4, 7-5 outcome in the second.

In doubles action, Ashenbrenner and Blanch won by a 9-7 score in the first flight while freshmen Meghan Davis and Katherine Licht won by an 8-3 count in the third.

UW-Oshkosh's best chance to defeat the Falcons (6-2) came in number three singles and number two doubles, where sophomore Diana Treu and junior Allison Orzech dropped 5-7, 6-1, 7-5 and 9-8 (9-7) decisions.

Eagles Shut Down Titans

Mercedes BlanchThe UW-La Crosse women's tennis team won nearly every set by a considerable amount in defeating UW-Oshkosh, 9-0, on Friday (Sept. 21) in La Crosse. The match was the WIAC opener for both squads.

UW-La Crosse (1-0) won its sixth consecutive match over UW-Oshkosh (1-2) by taking five of the six singles flights in straight sets and sweeping all three doubles flights. In singles play, UW-La Crosse won 77 of the 103 games played, with only the second flight going a third and deciding game. There, UW-Oshkosh freshman Mercedes Blanch dropped a 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 decision to UW-La Crosse's Kristen Mader.

UW-Oshkosh suffered a pair of 9-7 losses in doubles play, with junior Debra Ashenbrenner and Blanch falling in the first flight and freshmen Meghan Davis and Katherine Licht coming up short in the third.

Titans Slay Green Knights

Diana TreuThe UW-Oshkosh women's tennis team won all three doubles matches and four of six singles contests en route to a 7-2 victory over St. Norbert College on Tuesday (Sept. 18) at the Kolf Sports Center Complex. The dual meet win for the Titans was the fifth in succession over the Green Knights (2-3).

In doubles play, UW-Oshkosh (1-1) won 24 of the 36 games played. The Titans won 8-4 in the first flight with junior Debra Ashenbrenner and freshman Mercedes Blanch, 8-3 in the second flight with junior Allison Orzech and sophomore Diana Treu and 8-5 in the third flight with freshmen Meghan Davis and Katherine Licht.

UW-Oshkosh's effort in singles play was led by Treu, who won competition in the third flight by identical 6-0 counts. Other victors for the Titans in singles play were Ashenbrenner in the first flight (6-1, 6-3), Blanch in the second flight (3-6, 6-4, 7-5) and freshman Kathleen Winter in the fifth flight (6-2, 6-3). Ashenbrenner is still unbeaten in singles play this young season, owning a 4-0 record.

Titans Served Loss In Dual Meet Opener

Debra AshenbrennerWinning two of the last three matches played, Ripon College edged UW-Oshkosh, 5-4, in a women's tennis contest held Wednesday (Sept. 12) at the Kolf Sports Center Complex. The dual meet victory was the first for the Red Hawks over the Titans since the 1996 season.

The neighboring rivalry was tied 3-3 before Ripon College (6-0) took control of the contest by winning consecutive matches at number five and number six singles. UW-Oshkosh (0-1) closed the deficit by winning the event's final match, competition at number three singles.

Winning singles flights for the Titans were junior Debra Ashenbrenner at number one, freshman Mercedes Blanch at number two and sophomore Diana Treu at number three. Ashenbrenner and Blanch won their matches in straight sets, while Treu rallied from a first-set deficit by winning the next two.

In doubles play, Ashenbrenner and Blanch paired up to win the number one flight by an 8-2 count.

Titans Finish Third At UW-Whitewater Invitational

Erin ConnollyJunior Debra Ashenbrenner and freshman Erin Connolly went undefeated in singles play while freshmen Meghan Davis and Katherine Licht teamed up to go perfect in doubles action as UW-Oshkosh finished third at the UW-Whitewater Women's Tennis Invitational held Saturday (Sept. 8) in Whitewater. It was the highest finish for the Titans at the UW-Whitewater Invitational since 1997.

Beloit College won the rain-shortened eight-team event with 28 points, while UW-La Crosse finished second with 21 points, UW-Oshkosh third with 18 and UW-Whitewater fourth with 17. None of the three singles or three doubles flights completed due to the cancellation of play.

Ashenbrenner and Connolly both went 2-0 in singles play, competing in the number one and number three flights, respectively. In doubles play at the number one flight, Davis and Licht won their only match.
