The UW-Oshkosh women's tennis team
finished seventh in the race for the 2005 WIAC championship.
The Titans earned their overall ranking
after placing seventh at the WIAC Tournament held Saturday and Sunday
(Oct. 23-23) in Madison and sixth in the league's regular season
dual meet standings. The overall WIAC champion is determined by
using dual meet results as one-third of the championship criteria
and postseason tournament rankings as the remaining two-thirds.
UW-La Crosse counted 21 points to capture
its second WIAC title in three years and 14th overall. UW-Whitewater
finished second in the league's overall standings with 18 points,
while UW-Eau Claire listed third with 14, UW-River Falls fourth
with 12, UW-Stout fifth with nine, UW-Stevens Point sixth with five
and UW-Oshkosh seventh with four. UW-Oshkosh finished fourth in
the overall standings last year and fifth in 2003.
In WIAC dual matches, UW-La Crosse
compiled a 6-0 record, while UW-Whitewater went 5-1, UW-Eau Claire
4-2, UW-River Falls 3-3, UW-Stout 2-4, UW-Oshkosh 1-5 and UW-Stevens
Point 0-6.
Winning three singles championships
and all three doubles titles, UW-La Crosse scored 59 points to finish
first at the WIAC Tournament. UW-Whitewater finished second with
53 points, UW-Eau Claire placed third with 44, UW-River Falls fourth
with 36, UW-Stout fifth with 24, UW-Stevens Point sixth with 19
and UW-Oshkosh seventh with 17.
UW-Oshkosh's highest finish in any
flight at the WIAC Tournament came in number three doubles, where
Melissa Fosdick (Fr. Waukesha) and Andrea Nauer (Sr.
Menomonee Falls) placed fourth. The UW-Oshkosh tandem defeated Jodie
Czech and Danielle Farchmin of UW-Stout, 8-3, before dropping 8-3
decisions to both Debbie Braun and Erin Fekete of UW-La Crosse and
Liz Deprey and Kristin Neuman of UW-Eau Claire.
UW-Oshkosh also received a fifth-place
finish from Jenna Abbott (Fr. Oshkosh) at number four singles.
Abbott opened play with a 6-1, 6-4 loss to Molly Hunt of UW-Eau
Claire before defeating Allison Popple of UW-Stevens Point, 6-0,
6-0, and Michelle Hohl of UW-Stout, 6-2, 6-1.
Sixth-place finishes for the Titans
went to Nauer at number three singles, Abbott and Michelle Baur
(Sr. Elkhorn) at number one doubles and Holly DeBruin (Sr.
Sheboygan) and Cory Salo (Jr. Manitowoc) at number
two doubles.
Nauer finished sixth after dropping
a 6-3, 6-2 decision to Becky Briese of UW-River Falls. She previously
lost a 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 match to Deprey and posted a 6-3, 6-2 victory
over Emily Bouche of UW-Stevens Point.
Abbott and Baur sandwiched a bye with
two losses, including an 8-5 decision to Leah Baron and Megan Knobloch
of UW-River Falls in the fifth-place match. The UW-Oshkosh duo opened
play with an 8-5 loss to Jenna Bettmann and Nicole Hayek of UW-Stout.
DeBruin and Salo compiled a 1-2 record
to finish sixth. The UW-Oshkosh partners opened with an 8-2 loss
to Maggie Seitz and Kara Theis of UW-Whitewater before defeating
Briese and Kaylei Sorensen of UW-River Falls, 8-6. DeBruin and Salo
lost their fifth-place match to Hohl and Julie Mirenda of UW-Stout,
8-5.
UW-Oshkosh concluded its overall dual
meet schedule with a 3-6 record. |
