Titans Place Seventh In WIAC Championship Hunt
The UW-Oshkosh women's tennis
team finished seventh in the race for the 2007 WIAC championship.
The Titans earned their overall
ranking after placing seventh at the WIAC Tournament held
Saturday and Sunday (Oct. 20-21) in Madison and seventh
in the league's regular season dual meet standings. The
overall WIAC champion is determined by using dual meet
results as one-third of the championship criteria and
postseason tournament rankings as the remaining two-thirds.
UW-Whitewater won the WIAC title for its eighth crown
in school history and first since 2004. The Warhawks totaled
21 points in the final championship standings to outdistance
second place UW-Eau Claire with 18 points. UW-River Falls
finished third with 14 points, two-time defending champion
UW-La Crosse placed fourth with 11, UW-Stout fifth with
nine, UW-Stevens Point sixth with eight and UW-Oshkosh
seventh with three.
UW-Whitewater, UW-Eau Claire, UW-River Falls and UW-La
Crosse advance to a team tournament to decide the conference’s
automatic qualifier for the NCAA Division III Tournament.
The WIAC team tournament will be held in the spring at
UW-Whitewater the weekend prior to the NCAA championship.
The Warhawks claimed three singles titles and a pair of
doubles crowns during the two-day conference championship.
Tiffany Dawson won the number five singles trophy with
a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 decision over UW-Eau Claire’s Erin
Welch. Dawson earned the number sixth singles crown during
the 2005 championship.
Lauren Fahl claimed the number four singles title with
a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over UW-Eau Claire’s Brenna McCormick,
while Jenny Woyahn won the number sixth singles event
with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over the Blugolds’ Liz Deprey.
In doubles competition, Fahl teamed with Jessica Farrar
at number two and earned a championship with an 8-3 decision
over UW-Eau Claire’s McCormick and Kristie Carlson.
The Warhawks’ Amy Siemon and Brittany Gering won
the number three doubles title with a 9-8 (3) triumph
against UW-Eau Claire’s Deprey and Welch.
UW-River Falls’ Kozue Matsumoto won the number one
singles crown with a 6-1, 6-0 decision over UW-Whitewater’s
Ingrid Stensvaag. Matsumoto teamed with Katie Ostrowski
to win the number one doubles title after an 8-3 victory
over UW-Eau Claire’s Gina Dahl and Sarah Riordan.
The singles championship for Matsumoto was the first for
the program since Jenny Anderson won the number three
singles trophy in 1993, while the doubles victory was
the school’s first since Anderson and Emily Davis
claimed the number three title in 1993.
The Blugolds’ Dahl won the number two singles championship
with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over UW-Stout’s Jodie Czech,
while UW-La Crosse’s Katie McDonald earned the number
three singles crown with a 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (6) triumph over
UW-Eau Claire’s Kristie Carlson.
UW-Oshkosh's highest finish in any flight at the WIAC
Tournament came in number five singles, where Brittany
Braasch (So. • Ixonia) placed third. Braasch began
play by defeating UW-River Falls' Katie Anderson ????
and losing to UW-Eau Claire's Erin Welch 6-3, 6-4. In
the third-place match Braasch tallied a 6-4, 6-2 decision
over UW-Stout's Michelle Hohl.
The Titans also had fourth-place results from Alison Broerman
(Fr. • Kenosha) at number six singles and number
two doubles as she teamed up with Kate Broerman (Fr. •
Kenosha). Alison Broerman began the championship by defeating
UW-River Falls' Lindsay Gillman 7-6 (3), 6-2 before losing
to UW-Whitewater's Jenny Woyahn 6-1, 6-2. In the third-place
match Alison Broerman lost to UW-Stevens Point's Kaylei
Sorensen 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (3).
In doubles play, the Broerman tandem defeated UW-River
Falls' Katie Anderson and Mindy Rudiger 8-2. The duo finished
action by losing 8-0 to UW-Whitewater's Lauren Fahl and
Jessie Farrar and 8-5 to UW-La Crosse's Debbie Braun and
Katie McDonald.
Other UW-Oshkosh participants that snagged victories included
Jenna Abbott (Jr. • Oshkosh) at number two singles
and Whitney Tornow (So. • Neenah) at number three
singles.
Abbott's championship included a 6-1, 6-1 loss to Jessie
Farrar of UW-Whitewater, a 6-1, 7-6 (3) victory over Emily
Riordan of UW-Stevens Point and a 2-6, 6-0, 6-4 loss to
Kathryne Ostrowski of UW-Eau Claire. Tornow lost her first
match to UW-Whitewater's Kara Amundson 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 and
then beat UW-Stevens Point's Mashell VerBockel 6-3, 2-6,
6-3.
UW-Whitewater head coach Frank Barnes was voted the coach
of the year, while the Warhawks’ Jessica Farrar
received the Judy Kruckman Scholar-Athlete Award.
Named to the inaugural All-Sportsmanship Team were UW-Eau
Claire’s Gina Dahl, UW-La Crosse’s Brit Wagner,
UW-Oshkosh’s Brittany Braasch, UW-River Falls’
Katie Ostrowski, UW-Stevens Point’s Mashell VerBockel,
UW-Stout’s Kiersten Johnson and UW-Whitewater’s
Jessica Farrar. The team was selected for individuals
that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the
season. It included one member from each school as selected
by that school.

Titans To Compete At WIAC Tournament

The
36th edition of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
(WIAC) Women’s Tennis Championship will be held on Oct. 20-21
at Nielsen Tennis Stadium to decide six singles champions, three
sets of doubles champions and one team champion.
The team title will be determined by using a combination of the
regular season dual meet standings and the conference championship
results. The finish in the regular season conference standings accounts
for one-third of the criteria, while the WIAC championship accounts
for the remaining two-thirds.
Point distribution following dual meet competition included:
UW-Whitewater (6-0) (7 points), UW-Eau Claire (5-1) (6 points),
UW-Stout (3-3) (5 points), UW-River Falls (3-3) (4 points), UW-La
Crosse (2-4) (3 points), UW-Stevens Point (2-4) (2 points) and UW-Oshkosh
(0-6) (1 point).
The first day of competition will consist of the first two rounds
of doubles matches followed by the first round of singles matches.
The second day of the championship will feature the final two rounds
of singles matches followed by the final round of doubles matches.
The top four teams (following the conclusion of the conference championship)
will advance to a team tournament format that will determine the
conference's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
The team tournament will be held at the site of the overall conference
champion the weekend prior to the NCAA championship next spring.
UW-La Crosse has won back-to-back WIAC championships and three of
the last four events, as well as a league-leading 15 trophies. Sophomore
Carlie Bohrman claimed the No. 5 singles crown a year ago and is
the top seed at No. 2 singles this season, while junior Debbie Braun
was a member of the championship No. 3 doubles team in 2005 and
will participate at No. 2 doubles this year.
UW-Whitewater has captured seven conference titles in program history,
including the 2004 event and appears primed to return to the top
of league ledger.
Senior Jessie Farrar won the No. 2 singles title in 2005 and is
seeded third this year. Junior Kara Amundson and senior Tiffany
Dawson also won championships in 2005 at No. 5 singles and No. 6
singles, respectively.
UW-Eau Claire earned 10 straight conference championships from 1993-2002.
Senior Kristie Carlson and sophomore Brenna McCormick earned the
No. 2 doubles crown a season ago and are seeded second for this
year’s competition. McCormick also claimed the No. 6 singles
crown during the 2006 event and is seeded second at No. 4 singles
this year.
Blugold sophomore Gina Dahl and senior Liz Deprey teamed to win
the No. 3 doubles title last season. Dahl will be competing at No.
1 doubles and Deprey at No. 3 doubles for this year’s event.
UW-Stevens Point sophomore Rachel Benn won the No. 2 singles crown
in 2006, while competing with UW-La Crosse. She is seeded second
at No. 1 singles for this year’s spectacle.
UW-River Falls freshman Kozue Matsumoto claimed the top seed at
No. 1 singles after rolling through the regular season with a 13-0
record, including 6-0 in WIAC matches. She will participate at No.
1 doubles as the second seed with sophomore Kathryne Ostrowski.
UW-Stout senior Michelle Hohl will compete as the third seed at
No. 5 singles, while junior Jodie Czech enters the championship
as the fourth seed at No. 2 singles.
UW-Oshkosh sophomore Whitney Tornow (Neenah) will participate at
No. 3 singles as the fourth seed, while freshman Alison Broerman
(Kenosha) is the fourth seed at No. 6 singles. Broerman will team
with twin sister Kate (Kenosha) at No. 2 doubles. |
