2003 Season Preview
|
After registering 20-plus wins for
the ninth time in 10 seasons a year ago, the UW-Oshkosh women's
volleyball team is armed and ready to enjoy another successful
campaign in 2003.
Last year, competing
without a senior on its roster, UW-Oshkosh posted a 20-16 record
and placed fifth in the WIAC with a 4-4 mark. The Titans played
extremely well during the second half of the season as they won
11 of their last 15 matches.
"Our players
gained valuable experience last season by competing against 11
nationally and 19 regionally-ranked opponents," said head
coach Marty Petersen, who has guided the Titans to a 21-year record
of 589-354. "The 2002 season wasn't measured for us in wins
and losses, but in our ability to improve and build the foundation
for the future."
Last year's news
included a five-game victory over defending NCAA Division III
champion University of La Verne (Calif.), a three-game sweep of
nationally-ranked UW-La Crosse in a WIAC contest and a five-game
victory over nationally-ranked Lakeland College.
"Due to our
inexperience, we rode a roller coaster in terms of consistency
last year," said Petersen. "One match we were defeating
the defending national champion and the next we were beating ourselves.
This year, we hope to eliminate the ups and downs."
Led by 2002 All-WIAC
first team selection Amanda Delgadillo (West Allis), the Titans
return six former letter winners to the 2003 team.
Delgadillo, a senior
left-side hitter, was a dominant player for the Titans last season
after totaling 554 digs, 531 kills, 168 assists, 68 service aces
and 47 blocks in 129 games. Her average of 4.12 kills per game
a year ago led the WIAC. Delgadillo was named to five all-tournament
teams last season and compiled 28 kills, the sixth-highest total
in UW-Oshkosh history, in a five-game loss to UW-Eau Claire.
In addition to
Delgadillo, other key returning contributors to the Titans this
season are junior middle blocker/right-side hitter Mary Jo Chart
(Burlington), sophomore middle blocker/right-side hitter Tina
Hegemann (Rochester), junior middle blocker Amber Petersen (Milwaukee),
senior libero Jackie Regester (Lake Geneva) and sophomore left-side
hitter Kaylan Tolfa (Greenfield). Delgadillo and Amber Petersen
started all 36 matches for UW-Oshkosh last season, while Regester
started 32, Hegemann 28 and Chart 10.
Amber Petersen
is a talented player who gained NCAA Division III All-Midwest
Region Freshman Player of the Year honors in 2001. Last season,
she appeared in all 129 games, compiling 308 kills, 174 blocks,
69 digs, 49 service aces and a .271 hitting percentage. Her average
of 1.35 blocks per game led the WIAC.
Regester, who was
the team's setter last year, will return this season to the role
of libero, a position she played for the Titans in 2000 and 2001.
Last year, Regester compiled a team-high 1,427 assists while totaling
376 digs, 52 blocks and 35 service aces in 128 games played.
Hegemann totaled
149 kills, 94 blocks and 38 service aces in 98 games last year,
while Chart compiled 70 kills, 37 blocks and 29 service aces in
81 contests and Tolfa 41 digs and six service aces in 47 games.
UW-Oshkosh welcomes
eight newcomers to the roster this season, including sophomore
setter Ashley Fischer (Fond du Lac) and freshman left-side hitter
Sarah Schott (Winnebago, Ill.). Fischer is a transfer from NCAA
Division II University of Minnesota-Duluth, while Schott is back
with the Titans after receiving a medical red-shirt a year ago.
True freshmen joining
the Titans this fall are Lisa Beck (Darboy), Tina Beck (Darboy),
Amanda Chart (Burlington), Jillian Uridel (Mukwonago), Ashley
Utech (Sheboygan) and Jessica Woelfel (New Holstein). Lisa and
Tina Beck are sisters, while Amanda Chart joins her sister, Mary
Jo, as a member of the UW-Oshkosh squad. Lisa Beck was a fourth-team
all-state selection last fall as a senior at Kimberly High School.
UW-Oshkosh again
plays a highly competitive schedule in 2003. Besides the always-tough
WIAC slate, the Titans will also travel to the Elmhurst College
Invitational, the University of St. Thomas Classic, the Ohio Northern
Invitational and the UW-Whitewater Invitational. UW-Oshkosh, which
has the potential of playing 15 nationally and 19 regionally-ranked
opponents from a year ago, also hosts three tournaments in Kolf
Sports Center this season. |
