Engelland Involved In Three Close Matches
At NCAA Championship

Sam EngellandSam Engelland (Fr. • Neenah) finished UW-Oshkosh's wrestling season with a 1-2 record at the NCAA Division III Championship held Friday and Saturday (March 6-7) in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

After receiving a first-round bye in the 174-pound weight class, the unseeded Engelland (26-14) lost his second-round match to sixth-seeded and eventual sixth-place finisher Zach Molitor of Augsburg College (Minn.), 2-1.

In the consolation bracket, Engelland remained alive with a 5-3 win over unseeded Andrew Scavuzzo of Baldwin-Wallace College (Ohio).

Engelland's inaugural NCAA postseason appearance came to an end when he lost a 5-2 decision to unseeded and third-place finisher Bryon Grothus of Coe College (Iowa).

Eighth-seeded Evan Brown of the University of Dubuque (Iowa) took first place in the weight class with a 1-0 victory over second-seeded Rocky Mantella of Delaware Valley College (Pa.) in the title match.

Wartburg College (Iowa) scored 117.5 points to capture its second straight NCAA Division III title and seventh overall. The Knights were followed by second-place Augsburg College with 105 points, third-place UW-La Crosse with 87, fourth-place Coe College with 78.5 and fifth-place Delaware Valley College with 65.5.

UW-Oshkosh tied for 45th place in the team standings with one point. A total of 51 teams tallied points at the meet.

Engelland received an at-large invitation to the NCAA Division III Championship after finishing second at the WIAC Championship held Feb. 22 in Oshkosh.

Engelland To Scuffle At NCAA Championship

Sam EngellandSam Engelland (Fr. • Neenah) will represent UW-Oshkosh at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championship on Friday and Saturday (March 6-7) in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Engelland, who wrestles in the 174-pound weight class, received an at-large invitation to the national meet after finishing second at the WIAC Championship held Feb. 22 in Oshkosh.

Engelland enters the NCAA Division III Championship with a 25-12 record. His victory count, which includes three by a pin, ranks 13th among the 17 wrestlers that will compete in the weight class.

The unseeded Engelland begins his activity against sixth-seeded Zach Molitor of Augsburg College (Minn.). Molitor (29-7) qualified for the meet after finishing first at the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional held Feb. 21 in Mequon.

Engelland's second bout, regardless of his opening result, will be against third-seeded Kyle Vanderhyde of Olivet College (Mich.) or unseeded Andrew Scavuzzo of Baldwin-Wallace College (Ohio).

Vanderhyde (38-5), a two-time All-American, received an at-large selection to the meet after placing second at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional held Feb. 21 in Angola, Ind.

Scavuzzo (24-9) earned the right to compete at the meet after taking first place at the Ohio Athletic Conference Championship held Feb. 21 in New Concord, Ohio.

Titans Place Fourth At WIAC Championship

Three top four finishes propelled UW-Oshkosh to a fourth-place listing at the 54th Annual WIAC Wrestling Championship held Sunday (Feb. 22) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-La Crosse was able to hold off UW-Stevens Point and capture its 12th consecutive WIAC title and 13th overall. UW-La Crosse won the seven-team meet with 146 points, while UW-Stevens Point finished second with 144. UW-Whitewater placed third with 126 points, UW-Oshkosh fourth with 74, UW-Eau Claire fifth with 73, UW-Platteville sixth with 61 and Lawrence University seventh with 20. UW-Oshkosh's finish was its highest since the 2001 event.

Sam Engelland (Fr. • Neenah) led UW-Oshkosh with a second-place finish at 174 pounds. Engelland (25-12) won three of his four matches, including a 6-3 decision over Dennis Reckelberg of UW-Stevens Point in the true second-place contest. Engelland posted wins of 9-2 over Keith Dawson of UW-Eau Claire and 4-0 over Carsten Carlsen of UW-Platteville before falling 10-3 to Mike Schmitz of UW-La Crosse in the championship bout.

Earning fourth-place finishes for the Titans were Zachary Mueller (Fr. • Jackson) at 125 pounds and Jason Laplante (Fr. • New Berlin) at 285.

Zachary Mueller (16-13) lost 12-5 to eventual champion Albie McKinney of UW-La Crosse in his opening match. He then registered a 10-3 win over J.J. Froelich of UW-Platteville before dropping an 8-5 decision to Joe Mileski of UW-Stevens Point.

Laplante (18-10) opened his activity with a 4-1 loss to Sean Evans of UW-Whitewater. He then pinned Joe Pitsch of UW-Eau Claire in 5:16 before losing on a pin in 6:04 to Brett Oswald of UW-Stevens Point.

UW-Oshkosh picked up four fifth-place finishes from Jared Jaminski (So. • Wisconsin Rapids) at 133 pounds, Alex Mueller (So. • Jackson) at 141, James Dederich (Jr. • Menomonee Falls) at 165 and Eli Felts (Sr. • Appleton) at 184.

Jaminski (11-6) lost 8-1 to Kyle Wachholder of UW-Whitewater and 7-6 to Andy Miller of UW-Eau Claire before trouncing Chris Spaude of UW-Platteville, 18-3.

Alex Mueller (13-12) suffered losses of 13-5 to eventual champion Austin Bautista of UW-Whitewater and 4-1 to Alex Dahl of UW-La Crosse before pinning Zach Weisenberger of UW-Eau Claire in 1:45.

Dederich (27-12) dropped decisions of 11-2 to Ryan Higgins of UW-Platteville and 15-0 to Cory Ferguson of UW-La Crosse before pinning Seth Hendricks of UW-Eau Claire in 1:38.

Felts (26-16) lost on a pin in 1:16 to eventual champion Josh Zabel of UW-La Crosse in the first round. He then edged Brad Zellner of UW-Platteville, 2-0, before encountering an 8-2 loss to Sam Laes of Lawrence University. Felts recorded a 13-0 victory over Robbie Zube of UW-Eau Claire in his final contest.

Placing sixth for UW-Oshkosh were Jose Quintana (Fr. • Burnsville, Minn.) at 149 pounds and Aaron Konitzer (So. • Abrams) at 157. Konitzer (16-20) posted a 1-3 record and Quintana (13-20) a 0-3 mark in the tournament.

Also competing for UW-Oshkosh at the meet was 197-pounder Matt Halpert (Fr. • Pewaukee). Halpert (9-16) lost both of his contests.

Other winners in their weight class were Jered Kern of UW-Stevens Point at 125 pounds, Matt Mauseth of UW-La Crosse at 149, Jesse Milks of UW-Platteville at 157, Jake Wozniak of UW-Stevens Point at 165, Karl Voeck of UW-Whitewater at 197 and Dan Laurent of UW-La Crosse at 285. Wozniak was named the meet's outstanding wrestler.

The WIAC also selected UW-La Crosse's Dave Malecek as its Mertz Mortorelli Coach of the Year and UW-La Crosse's Zabel as its Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Named to the WIAC's All-Sportsmanship Team were John Fitzpatrick of Lawrence University, Weisenberger of UW-Eau Claire, Mauseth of UW-La Crosse, Morgan Sickinger (Sr. • Manitowoc) of UW-Oshkosh, Zellner of UW-Platteville, Wozniak of UW-Stevens Point and Josh Miller of UW-Whitewater.

Each of the 10 individual champions, along with nine at-large selections, will represent the WIAC at the NCAA Division III Championship on March 6-7 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The nine at-large selections were Laes of Lawrence University, Josh Holforty of UW-Eau Claire, Ferguson and Andy Moore of UW-La Crosse, Engelland of UW-Oshkosh, Chase DeCleene and Ben Engelland of UW-Stevens Point and Pat Nagel and Max Oldenburg of UW-Whitewater.

UW-Oshkosh To Host WIAC Championship

Sam EngellandA fierce battle for first place is expected to erupt when UW-Oshkosh hosts the 54th edition of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Wrestling Championship on Sunday (Feb. 22) in Kolf Sports Center. The event, which was last hosted by UW-Oshkosh in 2000, begins at 10 a.m.

UW-La Crosse has captured the past 11 WIAC titles, but the Eagles' winning streak could be in jeopardy due to the heavy artillery of both UW-Stevens Point and UW-Whitewater. This year's meet also includes wrestlers from Lawrence University, UW-Eau Claire, UW-Oshkosh and UW-Platteville.

UW-La Crosse won last year's championship with 147.5 points, while UW-Stevens Point finished second for the sixth consecutive season with 131.5. UW-Whitewater placed third with 111.5 points, UW-Platteville fourth with 86, UW-Eau Claire fifth with 82.5, Lawrence University sixth with 43.5 and UW-Oshkosh seventh with 42.5.

UW-Whitewater, ranked fifth in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, compiled a 5-0-1 dual meet record against its WIAC opponents during the regular season. The Warhawks' record includes a 28-13 victory over ninth-ranked UW-La Crosse and a 20-20 tie with 10th-ranked UW-Stevens Point.

UW-La Crosse posted a 5-1 dual meet record against its league rivals, including an 18-16 win over UW-Stevens Point. The Pointers finished third in the dual meet listings with a 4-1-1 record, while UW-Oshkosh placed fourth at 3-3, UW-Platteville fifth at 2-4, UW-Eau Claire sixth at 1-5 and Lawrence University sixth at 0-6.

This year's meet features six wrestlers who have combined to win a total of seven championships. The group is led by UW-La Crosse junior Dan Laurent, who has claimed the 285-pound title the past two years. Laurent is attempting to become the fifth wrestler in WIAC history to win the 285-pound weight class three consecutive seasons.

Also back to defend their titles are UW-Whitewater junior Austin Bautista at 141 pounds, UW-La Crosse sophomore Matt Mauseth at 149, UW-Platteville junior Jesse Milks at 157 and UW-La Crosse senior Josh Zabel at 184. Bautista finished second at 141 pounds and Milks second at 157 in 2007.

Another champion returning is UW-Platteville senior Ryan Higgins, who won the 149-pound weight class in 2006. Higgins also earned second-place medals at 149 pounds in both 2007 and 2008.

Other top-three finishers back are Lawrence University senior Tony Norton, who placed third at 149 pounds in 2008, UW-Eau Claire senior Josh Holforty, who placed third at 197 in both 2005 and 2008, and UW-Eau Claire senior Andy Miller, who placed third at 133 in both 2007 and 2008.

Additional top-three finishers returning are UW-Stevens Point senior Jered Kern, who placed second at 133 pounds in 2008 and third at 133 in both 2006 and 2007, UW-Stevens Point senior Chase DeCleene, who placed second at 141 in 2008, UW-Stevens Point senior Jake Wozniak, who placed third at 165 in 2008, UW-Stevens Point sophomore Ben Engelland, who placed second at 184 in 2008, and UW-Stevens Point junior Chad Gregory, who placed second at 285 in 2008.

Rounding out the top-three finishers returning are UW-Whitewater sophomore Max Oldenburg, who placed third at 125 pounds in 2008, UW-Whitewater senior Tom Trieloff, who placed third at 165 in 2007 and third at 157 in 2008, UW-Whitewater senior Pat Nagel, who placed second at 165 in 2008 and third at 157 in 2006, UW-Whitewater junior David Casper, who placed third at 184 in 2008, and UW-Whitewater senior Karl Voeck, who placed third at 184 in 2007.

Host UW-Oshkosh is expected to be led at the championship by junior James Dederich (Jr. • Menomonee Falls) at 165 pounds, freshman Sam Engelland (Fr. • Neenah) at 174, senior Eli Felts (Sr. • Appleton) at 184 and freshman Jason Laplante (Fr. • New Berlin) at 285.

Each champion in the 10 weight classes, along with nine at-large performers, will advance to the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championship on March 6-7 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Last year, UW-La Crosse finished second at the national meet, UW-Stevens Point 10th, UW-Whitewater 27th and UW-Eau Claire and UW-Platteville 32nd.

Titans Take Out Blugolds

James DederichAlex MuellerThe UW-Oshkosh wrestling team earned six wins on the mat and picked up a forfeit victory as they defeated UW-Eau Claire, 29-12, on Wednesday (Feb. 4) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Oshkosh (7-5/2-3 WIAC), which posted its first victory over UW-Eau Claire since the 2004-05 season, took control of the match when it won four straight bouts to take a 26-7 lead.

Aaron Konitzer (So. • Abrams) started the Titans' string of victories with an 8-3 win over Jon Ames at 157 pounds. James Dederich (Jr. • Menomonee Falls) followed with a 22-3 win over Seth Hendricks at 165 pounds before Sam Engelland (Fr. • Neenah) tallied a 5-1 victory over Keith Dawson at 174 and Eli Felts (Sr. • Appleton) marked a 3-1 triumph over Jordan Davis at 184.

UW-Oshkosh's remaining winners were Zachary Mueller (Fr. • Jackson) at 125 pounds, Alex Mueller (So. • Jackson) at 141 and Jason Laplante (Fr. • New Berlin) at 285. Zachary Mueller won on a forfeit while Alex Mueller pinned Zach Weisenberger in 2:12 and Laplante ousted Joe Pitsch, 6-0. The pin was Alex Mueller's fourth of the season.

UW-Eau Claire (5-11/1-4 WIAC) scored five team points on Josh Holforty's 17-1 victory over Matt Halpert (Fr. • Pewaukee) at 197 points and four on Andy Johnston's 12-1 triumph over Jose Quintana (Fr. • Burnsville, Minn.). The Blugolds scored their remaining team points on Andy Miller's 3-0 victory over Jared Jaminski (So. • Wisconsin Rapids) at 133 pounds.

12th-Ranked Rangers Apprehend Titans

Kyle KleuskensJason LaplanteJason Laplante (Fr. • New Berlin) was the lone UW-Oshkosh winner as the Titans dropped a 39-3 decision to the UW-Parkside wrestling team on Wednesday (Jan. 28) in Somers.

UW-Parkside (9-5), ranked 12th in the NCAA Division II by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, won the first nine bouts to take 39-0 lead. Laplante then snapped the string of UW-Parkside victories by posting a 6-3 win over 285-pounder Jon Treml in the 10th and final bout.

UW-Oshkosh (6-5) lost a pair of tightly-contested bouts as Kyle Kleuskens (So. • Freedom) dropped an 8-7 decision to Brandon Kircher at 133 pounds and Sam Engelland (Fr. • Neenah) a 4-1 verdict to Luke Rynish at 174.

UW-Parkside had two pins in the contest, one by Mike Migawa at 141 pounds and another by Malcolm Briggs at 197. Migawa stuck Kaleb Stephens (Fr. • Barron) to the mat in 6:30 while Briggs glued Matt Halpert (Fr. • Pewaukee) to the surface in 44 seconds.

The Rangers registered two other convincing victories as Craig Becker tallied a 17-1 win over Morgan Sickinger (Sr. • Manitowoc) at 149 pounds and Eddie Stefonek a 22-6 triumph over Aaron Konitzer (So. • Abrams) at 157.

Other UW-Parkside victories went to Cody Zimmerman at 125 pounds, Corey VanGroll at 165 and Lucas Haag at 184. Zimmerman defeated Carl DeLuca (Fr. • Wisconsin Rapids), 9-1, while VanGroll ousted James Dederich (Jr. • Menomonee Falls), 7-1. Haag notched an 11-2 win over Eli Felts (Sr. • Appleton).

Seventh-Ranked Eagles Shutout Titans

Sam EngellandJason LaplanteUW-La Crosse recorded its second shutout of the season with a 41-0 victory over the UW-Oshkosh wrestling team on Thursday (Jan. 22) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-La Crosse (17-5/4-1 WIAC), which entered the match ranked seventh in the NCAA Division III by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, tallied 18 of its points on pins by Jonny Brennan at 125 pounds, Alex Dahl at 141 and Matt Mauseth at 149.

Brennan opened the match with a pin of the Titans' Carl DeLuca (Fr. • Wisconsin Rapids) in 4:17. After Pat Parrillo's 9-5 victory over Kyle Kleuskens (So. • Freedom) at 133 pounds, Dahl stuck Alex Mueller (So. • Jackson) to the mat in 6:48. Mauseth followed Dahl with a pin of Jose Quintana (Fr. • Burnsville, Minn.) in 4:46.

UW-La Crosse, the 11-time defending WIAC champion, picked up eight more points on convincing victories by Josh Zabel at 184 pounds and Andy Moore at 197. Zabel defeated Eli Felts (Sr. • Appleton), 13-1, while Moore ousted Mike Kratz (Sr. • Oconto Falls), 13-3.

The Eagles also acquired wins by Ryan Farwell at 157 pounds, Cory Ferguson at 165, Mike Schmitz at 174 and Dan Laurent at 285.

Farwell notched an 8-1 victory over Aaron Konitzer (So. • Abrams), while Ferguson registered an 11-5 win over James Dederich (Jr. • Menomonee Falls). Schmitz recorded a 6-1 victory over Sam Engelland (Fr. • Neenah) and Laurent a 7-2 triumph over Jason Laplante (Fr. • New Berlin).

UW-Oshkosh (3-3/1-3 WIAC) failed to score for just the third time in its last 43 dual meets.

Titans Have Strong Showing At Dan Gable Open

James DederichJared JaminskiAlex MuellerJames Dederich (Jr. • Menomonee Falls) won the 165-pound class and Jason Laplante (Fr. • New Berlin) posted two quick pins as the UW-Oshkosh wrestling team participated in the Dan Gable Open on Sunday (Jan. 18) in Kolf Sports Center.

The Titans were among eight schools taking part in the non-scoring meet. UW-Oshkosh added to its success with second-place showings from Jared Jaminski (So. • Wisconsin Rapids), Alex Mueller (So. • Jackson) and Mike Kratz (Sr. • Oconto Falls).

Dederich won all three of his matches on his way to first place, including an opening decision over UW-Stevens Point’s Fred Lane. He then toppled Adam Avalos of UW-Parkside before prevailing over Matt Gille in the title bout.

In the 285-pound division, Laplante pinned UW-Eau Claire’s Joe Pitsch in just 1:15 to advance to the semifinals, where he was defeated. Laplante then came back with a victory over Eric Allen (So. • Markesan) and a 1:00 pin of the Pointers’ Steve Wozniak to earn third place.

Jaminski took down Whitewater’s Brian Lewis and Grant Sutter in his first two challenges to earn a spot in the 133-pound final. There he fell to Wisconsin’s Tyler Graff for a second-place result.

Mueller and Kratz each recorded a pin while notching 2-1 records good enough for second place. Mueller lost to Northwestern’s Eric Galka in the 141-pound final, while Kratz dropped a decision to UW-Eau Claire’s Josh Holforty in the 197-pound division.

The Titans’ other third-place finisher was Eli Felts (Sr. • Appleton), who tallied a 3-1 record in the event. Felts took his last two matches over UW-Parkside’s Ryan Katona and UW-Stevens Point’s Dennis Reckelberg at 174 pounds.

UW-Oshkosh also had Carl DeLuca (Fr. • Wisconsin Rapids) earn fourth place with a 2-2 mark at 125 pounds. Kaleb Stephens (Fr. • Barron) and Aaron Konitzer (So. • Abrams) each finished fifth with two wins apiece, including a pin by Stephens in 2:10 during his last victory.

Titans To Host Dan Gable Open

The UW-Oshkosh wrestling team will host the Sixth Annual Dan Gable Open on Sunday (Jan. 18) in Kolf Sports Center.

Nearly 125 wrestlers are expected to take part in the event, including competitors from Northern Illinois University, Northwestern University (Ill.), Purdue University (Ind.), University of Wisconsin, UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse, UW-Oshkosh and UW-Parkside.

The tournament, named after American wrestling legend Dan Gable, begins at 9 a.m. Proceeds from the event go to the endowment fund that supports the UW-Oshkosh wrestling program.

Fifth-Ranked Warhawks Defeat Titans

Sam EngellandJose QuintanaPins by Austin Bautista, Sean Pietrzyk and Karl Voeck sparked the UW-Whitewater wrestling team to a 35-7 victory over UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday (Jan. 14) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Whitewater (11-3/3-0 WIAC), which entered the match ranked fifth in the NCAA Division III by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, took a 13-0 lead on Bautista's pin of Alex Mueller (So. • Jackson) in 4:19 at 141 pounds.

The Warhawks went ahead 26-7 on Pietrzyk's pin of Eli Felts (Sr. • Appleton) in 2:55 at 184 pounds and 32-7 on Voeck's pin of Mike Kratz (Sr. • Oconto Falls) in 2:44 at 197.

UW-Oshkosh (3-2/1-2 WIAC) scored its team points on victories by Jose Quintana (Fr. • Burnsville, Minn.) at 149 pounds and Sam Engelland (Fr. • Neenah) at 174. Quintana cut the Titans' deficit to 13-3 with a 9-7 win over Adam Spatchek, while Engelland sliced UW-Oshkosh's deficit to 20-7 with a 10-1 triumph over Jake D'Acquisto.

UW-Whitewater opened the match with victories by Max Oldenburg at 125 pounds and Kyle Wachholder at 133. Oldenburg defeated Carl DeLuca (Fr. • Wisconsin Rapids), 12-1, while Wachholder ousted Kyle Kleuskens (So. • Freedom), 11-4.

Other winners for the Warhawks were Tom Trieloff at 157 pounds, Pat Nagel at 165 and Sean Evans at 285. Trieloff edged Aaron Konitzer (So. • Abrams), 6-4, while Nagel defeated James Dederich (Jr. • Menomonee Falls), 16-6. Evans posted a 7-0 win over Jason Laplante (Fr. • New Berlin).

Titans To Hold Kids' Club Night

The UW-Oshkosh wrestling team, along with USA Wrestling and the U.S. Army, is sponsoring Kid’s Club Night on Wednesday (Jan. 14) in Kolf Sports Center. The event kicks off at 7 p.m. as the Titans wrestle fifth-ranked UW-Whitewater.

Any member of a youth wrestling club (8th grade and younger) will receive FREE ADMISSION to the dual meet.

The event features several door prizes and raffles. The grand raffle prize is a 2008 Olympic team poster that is framed and autographed by members of all three U.S. Olympic wrestling teams. The U.S. Army will also hold a T-shirt toss between bouts.

The UW-Oshkosh cheer and stunt team will also perform.

Titans Post Seventh-Place Finish
At Cornell College Matman Invitational

Eli FeltsMike KratzJason LaplanteJason Laplante (Fr. • New Berlin) took second place and Eli Felts (Sr. • Appleton) won five matches as the UW-Oshkosh wrestling team tallied a seventh-place showing at the Cornell College Matman Invitational on Saturday and Sunday (Jan. 3-4) in Mount Vernon, Iowa.

Wartburg College (Iowa) dominated the event, taking the team title with a score of 169 points. Morningside College (Iowa) followed in second place with 94, along with Cornell College at 77, William Penn University (Iowa) at 70 and Lakeland College in fifth place with 69. The Titans finished with 65 points.

Laplante notched a pair of pins in recording a 3-1 record in the 285-pound division. A pair of pins, including one in just 49 seconds, vaulted Felts to a 5-1 mark and a third-place result at 174 pounds.

Laplante tallied a fall in 3:00 of William Penn University’s Ryan Groom in his first match. He then took down Lakeland College’s Bill Wood in 3:39 before winning a decision over John Helgerson of Wartburg College to advance to the final. Luther College’s (Iowa) Allyn Plattner defeated Laplante in the title match.

Felts dropped his first bout of the competition before getting on a roll with a pin of 2:01 against Cornell College’s Cliff Robertson. He went on to defeat teammate Alec Hakes (So. • Menomonee Falls) and Wartburg College’s Craig Kreman. Felts completed his onslaught with a victory over Morningside College’s Weston Frahm in the third-place showdown.

UW-Oshkosh received a fourth-place listing from Mike Kratz (Sr. • Oconto Falls) in the 197-pound class. Kratz captured his first two matches, including a pin of 2:46 against Morningside College’s Brian Newton. He topped Lakeland College’s Everett Wood before dropping to the third-place bracket, where he topped Carl Spain of William Penn University. Morningside College’s Cole Wilson knocked off Kratz to earn third place.

The Titans closed out the event with three-win totals from Chad Leviner (So. • Mukwonago) and Sam Engelland (Fr. • Neenah). Engelland went 3-2 in the 174-pound division while earning fifth place, as Leviner took sixth at 125 pounds with a 3-3 record.

James Dederich was the other UW-Oshkosh participant to score, tallying a sixth-place figure at 165 pounds. He recorded a mark of 2-3, including a pin of 2:11 over Buena Vista University’s (Iowa) Morris Romero in his opening challenge.

Engelland, Felts Wrestle At Midlands Championships

Sam EngellandSam Engelland (Fr. • Neenah) defeated teammate Eli Felts (Sr. • Appleton) in overtime for the lone UW-Oshkosh victory at the prestigious Midlands Wrestling Championships held Thursday and Friday (Dec. 29-30) in Evanston, Ill.

Engelland and Felts, who competed in the 174-pound weight class, were the only two UW-Oshkosh wrestlers at the meet.

Engelland posted a 1-2 record, including a 6-0 loss to Evan Brown of the University of Dubuque (Iowa) in the first round. Engelland then edged Felts, 6-4, before dropping an 8-4 decision to Brandon Perkins of Oregon State University.

Felts lost both of his contests. Prior to his setback to Engelland, Felts lost a 4-1 result to James Nakashima of Lincoln College (Ill.). Nakashima was a national qualifier for the National Junior College Athletic Association Championship a year ago.

The University of Iowa captured the team title with 156.5 points. Iowa State University finished second with 153.5 points, while the University of Missouri finished third with 121.5, University of Wisconsin fourth with 98.5 and host Northwestern University fifth with 88.5.

Rounding out the top 10 teams were sixth-place Central Michigan University with 83 points, seventh-place Purdue University (Ind.) with 82.5, eighth-place American University (District of Columbia) with 57.5, ninth-place University of Maryland with 56 and 10th-place University of Illinois with 54.

UW-Oshkosh placed 47th of the 48 teams that scored with one-half point.

Titans Earn Second Place At
Milwaukee School Of Engineering Invitational

Sam EngellandMike KratzChad LevinerThe UW-Oshkosh wrestling team had seven members advance to their title match as it finished second at the Milwaukee School of Engineering Invitational held Saturday (Dec. 6) in Milwaukee.

Lakeland College topped the 11-team field with 125 points, while UW-Oshkosh tallied 117 for second place and UW-Platteville 98.5 for third. Milwaukee School of Engineering amassed 71 points to take fourth place, just ahead of fifth-place Central College’s (Iowa) total of 70.

The Titans received first-place performances from Chad Leviner (So. • Mukwonago), Sam Engelland (Fr. • Neenah) and Mike Kratz (Sr. • Oconto Falls).

Meanwhile, Alex Mueller (So. • Jackson) and James Dederich (Jr. • Menomonee Falls) each turned in second-place showings in their respective weight classes.

Leviner posted a 3-0 record in winning the 124-pound division. He defeated fellow Titan Carl DeLuca (Fr. • Wisconsin Rapids), who earned second with a 2-1 mark.

Zachary Mueller (Fr. • Jackson) completed the sweep of the top three places by winning four of his five matches.

Another pair of UW-Oshkosh teammates met in the final at 174 pounds. Engelland prevailed to complete a 4-0 tournament with his victory over Eli Felts (Sr. • Appleton). Felts compiled a record of 3-1 on his way to second place.

Kratz notched a 4-0 mark, along with pins in 2:21 and 2:23, as he captured the 197-pound division by knocking off Adam Schultz of Concordia University Wisconsin in the final.

The Titans’ second-place results closed out with records of 4-1 (Pins of 1:27 and 2:15) by Dederich at 165 pounds and 3-1 by Alex Mueller at 141 pounds.

UW-Oshkosh’s other top-three scorer was Kyle Kleuskens (So. • Freedom), who defeated UW-Platteville’s Chris Spaude for third place at 133 pounds. Kleuskens achieved a 4-1 record with a pair of pins, in 1:48 and 6:22.

The Titans rounded out the results with two wrestlers earning the fifth spot in their respective brackets. Jose Quintana (Fr. • Burnsville, Minn.) notched pins of 2:28 and 4:40 on his way to a 4-2 record at 149 pounds. In the 133-pound class, Nate Stetzer (So. • Wausau) went 3-2, including a pair of pins in 1:01 and another in 1:49.

Another wrestler who earned at least three victories was Aaron Geiger (Fr. • Mishicot), who went 3-3 with two pins (2:51 and 3:49) in the 165-pound collection. Luke Nayes (Fr. • Bloomer) and Nick Werner (Fr. • West Allis) each posted a 2-2 mark in the 149-pound division, with Werner scoring a pin in just 41 seconds.

11th-Ranked Pointers Wound Titans

UW-Stevens Point (6-0/1-0), ranked 11th in the NCAA Division III by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, won the first eight bouts against UW-Oshkosh and nine of 10 overall.

UW-Oshkosh (3-1/1-1 WIAC) trailed 28-0 before Chad Leviner (So. • Mukwonago) posted a 5-4 victory over Joe Mileski at 125 pounds.

The Titans had several other competitive contests, including Jason Laplante's (Fr. • New Berlin) 4-3 loss to Chad Gregory at 285 pounds and Jacob Bauer's (Fr. • West Allis) 4-2 setback to Dan Wierzba at 157.

Kris Magruder opened the meet for the Pointers with a pin of Jose Quintana (Fr. • Burnsville, Minn.) in 4:15 at 149 pounds. The Pointers tallied one more pin as Ben Engelland stuck Ian Sauer (Jr. • Brodhead) to the mat in 1:45 at 184 pounds.

UW-Stevens Point won five other bouts, including Jake Wozniak's 11-3 victory over James Dederich (Jr. • Menomonee Falls) at 165 pounds, Jared Kern's 8-0 triumph over Kyle Kleuskens (So. • Freedom) at 133 and Chase DeCleene's 9-2 win over Alex Mueller (So. • Jackson) at 141.

Other winners for the Pointers were Chris Karl at 174 pounds and Jeremy Fulk at 197. Karl defeated Eli Felts (Sr. • Appleton), 6-3, while Fulk slipped past Mike Kratz (Sr. • Oconto Falls), 8-4.

Five Titans Win Last Match At Coe College Invitational

UW-Oshkosh also had a pair of wrestlers reach the title match in recording second-place results. No team scores were kept in the event.

Dederich posted a record of 3-0 in sweeping the 165-pound class. He notched pins in 0:13 and 1:44, with the latter taking out Waldorf’s Brandon Porter in the final.

In the 149-pound division, Jose Quintana (Fr. • Burnsville, Minn.) took second after recording a 3-1 mark and a pin in 4:05. Chad Leviner (So. • Mukwonago) was UW-Oshkosh’s other second-place recipient, going 2-1 in the 125-pound weight class.

Eli Felts (Sr. • Appleton) began the third-place results with his 4-1 record at 174 pounds. Continuing at 184 pounds, Sam Engelland (Fr. • Neenah) finished third after scoring a 3-1 mark with one pin in 6:03. Jason Laplante (Fr. • New Berlin) highlighted his listing of third with a pair of pins in the 285-pound class. He took down opponents in times of 0:16 and 2:32 while notching a 2-1 record. The Titans’ final third-place performer was Mike Kratz (Sr. • Oconto Falls), who won three of his four matches in the 197-pound division.

UW-Oshkosh saw Zachary Mueller (Fr. • Jackson) tally a 2-2 mark in the 125-pound class, while Aaron Konitzer (So. • Abrams) recorded a 3-3 figure and a pin in 4:05 at 141 pounds. Alex Mueller (So. • Jackson) rounded out the Titans’ multi-match winners with his 2-2 record in the 141-pound bracket.

Titans Rally To Oust Pioneers

UW-Oshkosh (3-0/1-0 WIAC) trailed 15-13 before pulling out the win on match-ending victories by Sam Engelland (Fr. • Neenah) at 184 pounds, Mike Kratz (Sr. • Oconto Falls) at 197 and Jason Laplante (Fr. • New Berlin) at 285.

Engelland gave the Titans a 16-15 lead with his 5-2 triumph over Brad Zellner. UW-Oshkosh extended its advantage to 22-15 on a forfeit to Kratz. The Titans put a stamp on their first 3-0 start since the 1996-97 season on Laplante's 5-2 victory over Adam Mossner.

UW-Oshkosh tallied the first 10 points of the match as Chad Leviner (So. • Mukwonago) defeated J.J. Froelich, 11-3, at 125 pounds and Kyle Kleuskens (So. • Freedom) won on a forfeit at 133.

UW-Platteville (0-1/0-1 WIAC) bounced back to take a 12-10 lead on victories by Andy Casper at 141 pounds, Ryan Borman at 149 and Jesse Milks at 157. Casper pinned Alex Mueller (So. • Jackson) in 6:58, while Borman defeated Jose Quintana (Fr. • Burnsville, Minn.), 14-10, and Milks edged Aaron Konitzer (So. • Abrams), 5-3.

UW-Oshkosh regained the lead at 13-12 on James Dederich's (Jr. • Menomonee Falls) 7-2 win over Matt McGill at 165 pounds. UW-Platteville climbed back in front 15-13 on Carsten Carlsen's 7-4 victory over Eli Felts (Sr. • Appleton) at 174 pounds.

UW-Platteville won last year's match, 31-10, and had gone 3-1-1 in its last five contests with UW-Oshkosh.

Titans Storm Back To Raid Vikings

UW-Oshkosh (2-0) lost its first four bouts of the match before Aaron Konitzer (So. • Abrams) cut the Titans' deficit to 17-3 with a 6-4 victory over Josh Stansberry at 157 pounds

UW-Oshkosh climbed to within 17-16 on wins by James Dederich (Jr. • Menomonee Falls) at 165 pounds, Eli Felts (Sr. • Appleton) at 174, Sam Engelland (Fr. • Neenah) at 184 and Matt Halpert (Fr. • Pewaukee) at 197. The results featured victories of 12-2 by Dederich over Adam Houser, 7-6 by Felts over Bryce Skaggs, 6-4 by Engelland over J.P. Williams and 3-2 by Halpert over Drew Love.

Laplante then capped the Titans' comeback by sticking Jeff Cain to the mat in 5:33 at 285 pounds.

Grand View University (0-1) opened its inaugural wrestling season with four straight victories, including Jon Henslee's pin of UW-Oshkosh's Morgan Sickinger (Sr. • Manitowoc) in 6:23 at 141 pounds.

The Vikings also received a 9-4 win from Bret Kautz over Chad Leviner (So. • Mukwonago) at 125 pounds, an 8-0 victory from Nick Coffman over Kyle Kleuskens (So. • Freedom) at 133 and a 12-0 triumph from Matt Burns over Jose Quintana (Fr. • Burnsville, Minn.) at 149.

Titans Cage Hawks In Season Opener

Engelland, competing at 184 pounds, gave UW-Oshkosh a 6-0 lead when he stuck Dan Miller to the mat in 4:05. Following Matt Halpert's (Fr. • Pewaukee) 4-3 loss to Harper College's Tony Benning at 197 pounds, Laplante extended the Titans' advantage to 12-3 with a pin of Drew Faber in 3:17 at 285.

After Chad Leviner (So. • Mukwonago) lost on a pin in 2:23 to the Hawks' D.J. Rackley at 125 pounds, UW-Oshkosh increased its lead to 19-9 on victories by Kyle Kleuskens (So. • Freedom) at 133 pounds and Morgan Sickinger (Sr. • Manitowoc) at 141. Kleuskens defeated Carlo Martinez, 8-2, while Sickinger ousted Anthony Jimenez, 11-0.

Harper College (0-1) pulled to within 19-16 as Nate Stedaker posted an 18-9 win over Alex Mueller (So. • Jackson) at 149 pounds and Phillip Starnes a 5-4 triumph over Aaron Konitzer (So. • Abrams) at 157.

UW-Oshkosh halted Harper College's rally with victories by James Dederich (Jr. • Menomonee Falls) at 165 pounds and Eli Felts (Sr. • Appleton) at 174. Dederich gave the Titans' a 22-16 lead with an 8-2 win over Travis Krol, while Felts ended the match with a 15-3 victory over Dan Olsen.
