Titans Add Six Recruits
For 2004-05 Season

State high school champion Pat Detmer of Lodi and Augsburg College (Minn.) transfer and Kaukauna native Jeremy VanSchyndel have announced that they will attend UW-Oshkosh this fall and wrestle for the Titans.

Detmer, a freshman, comes to UW-Oshkosh after winning the 275-pound title at the 2004 WIAA Division 2 State Tournament. Detmer, who placed fourth in the state at 275 pounds in 2003, compiled an 81-13 record during his final two years of competition at Lodi High School.

VanSchyndel, a sophomore, enrolls at UW-Oshkosh after posting a 12-7 record at 125 pounds for Augsburg College last winter. The Kaukauna High School graduate finished third at 119 pounds in 2002 and third at 125 pounds in 2003 at the WIAA Division 1 State Tournaments. VanSchyndel registered a 76-5 record during his final two years of high school competition.

Detmer and VanSchyndel highlight a group of six incoming recruits for the Titans, with the others being freshmen Justin Linzmeir of De Pere, Kevin Luedtke of Two Rivers, B.J. Rynne of Necedah and Abraham Ziaimehr of Arden Hills, Minn. (Mounds View High School). Rynne posted a 25-8 record and qualified at 189 pounds for the 2003 WIAA Division 3 State Tournament.

VanSchyndel will likely compete at 125 pounds for UW-Oshkosh head coach Mike DeRoehn this winter, while Luedtke will participate at 149, Ziaimehr at 157, Linzmeir at 165, Rynne at 184 and Detmer at 197.

Titans Have Four Place Winners
At WIAC Championship

Justin Lancaster (Jr. • Monroe) finished second at 157 pounds to lead UW-Oshkosh's individual performances at the WIAC Wrestling Championship held Sunday (Feb. 22) in Whitewater.

The second-seeded Lancaster defeated four of his five opponents, including three in succession after suffering a quarterfinal round loss. Lancaster opened competition with a 10-3 win over UW-Eau Claire's Matt Renkas before dropping a 7-4 decision in the quarterfinals to eventual champion Tony Wright of UW-Whitewater. Lancaster (24-9) went on to record a true second-place finish by posting a 5-3 win over UW-Stevens Point's Greg Metzler, pinning Renkas in a time of 1:01 and registering a 10-6 victory over UW-La Crosse's Ross Needham.

UW-Oshkosh also received a third-place finish from Nate Muckerheide (Jr. • Oostburg) at 285 pounds and a fourth-place finish from both Sean Fortmann (Jr. • Mukwonago) at 174 pounds and Luke Madson (Sr. • Clinton) at 141.

The second-seeded Muckerheide (15-3) pinned two of his three opponents, but it was a 5-3 loss to UW-Stevens Point's Mike Hayes in the quarterfinal round that prevented him from winning weight class. Muckerheide's pins were in times of 2:15 over UW-Eau Claire's Larry Moen and 1:02 over UW-Platteville's Ryan Rozek, with the latter coming in the third-place match.

Fortmann (21-17) went 1-2 on the mat, with his lone victory being a 6-5 decision over Lawrence University's Greg Goska. The fifth-seeded Fortmann lost 3-0 to UW-La Crosse's Nick Patenaude in the first round and 15-0 to UW-Whitewater's Jeff Zastrow in the third-place bout.

Madson (12-12) split his four decisions in the tournament, including a 7-4 loss to UW-La Crosse's David Silva in the third-place match. The fourth-seeded Madson began competition with an 8-0 win over UW-Eau Claire's Tony D'Autuono and a 6-0 loss to UW-Whitewater's Nick Karl, the eventual champion. Madson advanced to his third-place bout with a 7-2 win over UW-Platteville's Spencer Galbavy.

Winning individual titles were UW-Eau Claire's Derek Sikora at 165 pounds, UW-La Crosse's Jason Lulloff at 184 pounds and Ryan Allen at 285, UW-Stevens Point's Brady Holtz at 133 pounds, Cody Koenig at 174 and Yan White at 197 and UW-Whitewater's Karls at 141 pounds, Wright at 157, John Rombca at 125 and Ross Babcock at 149.

UW-La Crosse scored 138.5 points to capture the team title for the seventh consecutive year. UW-Stevens Point finished second with 118.5 points, while UW-Whitewater was third with 104, UW-Eau Claire fourth with 75.5, UW-Platteville fifth with 66.5, UW-Oshkosh sixth with 65 and Lawrence University seventh with 61. The Titans finished fifth with 85 points a year ago.

UW-Whitewater's Babcock was named the John Peterson WIAC Wrestler of the Meet, while Willie Myers of UW-Whitewater was named the Mertz Mortorelli WIAC Coach of the Year.

Titans Capture Vikings With Win In Last Bout


Sean FortmannEach team won in five weight classes, but it was UW-Oshkosh's victory in the last bout of the match that decided the contest as the Titans defeated Lawrence University, 22-19, in a wrestling meet held Friday (Feb. 13) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Oshkosh (6-10/2-4 WIAC) and Lawrence University (12-5/1-5 WIAC) entered the final bout of the match tied at 19 before Sean Fortmann (Jr. • Mukwonago) gave the Titans the win with his 6-4 victory over Joe Austin. Lawrence University created the 19-19 deadlock just one bout earlier with John Budi's 5-4 win over Jason Gruszynske (Jr. • Pickett).

UW-Oshkosh, which defeated UW-Eau Claire, 25-22, last Friday (Feb. 6) with a pin in the final bout of the match, also received victories against Lawrence University from Luke Madson (Sr. • Clinton) at 141 pounds, Justin Lancaster (Jr. • Monroe) at 157, Mike Croninger (Jr. • Oshkosh) at 197 and Nate Muckerheide (Jr. • Oostburg) at 285.

Madson and Lancaster each recorded pins for the Titans, with Madson binding Nick Muench to the mat in 28 seconds and Lancaster sticking Jimmy Lima to the surface in 2:10. Madson's pin was UW-Oshkosh's second fastest this season. UW-Oshkosh also benefited from Croninger's 5-4 win over Greg Goska and Muckerheide's 12-3 victory over Kenny Hamm.

Muckerheide Wins Title At UW-Eau Claire Invite


Justin LancasterNate MuckerheideThe UW-Oshkosh wrestling team had four placewinners, including Nate Muckerheide's (Jr. • Oostburg) championship at 285 pounds, during the UW-Eau Claire Invitational held Saturday (Feb. 7) in Eau Claire.

Muckerheide went unbeaten in three bouts to raise his record to 12-3 on the season. He posted a 7-5 win over Mike Hayes of UW-Stevens Point in the title contest after pinning Brad Engel of Itasca Community College (Minn.) in 36 seconds and Brian Borchers of Wartburg College in 1:34. Muckerheide has a team-best nine pins on the year.

The Titans also received a third-place finish from Justin Lancaster (Jr. • Monroe) at 157 pounds and a pair of fourth-place listings from Chris Stratton (Fr. • Appleton) at 125 pounds and Sean Fortmann (Jr. • Mukwonago) at 174.

Lancaster went 3-1 in the tournament, including a 15-5 victory over Matt Steffenson of Itasca Community College in the third-place match. He also pinned Matt Renkas of UW-Eau Claire in 1:22 and defeated Scott Dorn of UW-La Crosse, 13-5. Lancaster's lone setback was a 7-4 loss to Dustin Bliven of Wartburg College in the semifinal round. Lancaster has a 19-8 record on the season.

Stratton finished with a 1-2 tournament record after dropping a 14-3 decision to Paul Reedy of Wartburg College in the third-place match. Stratton, who owns a 7-20 record on the year, also was involved in a pair of technical falls, a win in 6:59 over Jim Shores of Itasca Community College and a loss in 5:49 to eventual champion Josh Miller of UW-La Crosse.

Fortmann also posted a 1-2 record in the tournament, including an 8-2 loss to Nathan Specht of Wartburg College in the third-place match. Previously, Fortmann lost 7-3 to eventual champion Cody Koenig of UW-Stevens Point and defeated Tyler Wilkes of Itasca Community College, 10-5. Fortmann owns a 19-15 record on the season.

Wartburg College (Iowa), ranked first in the NCAA Division III by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, captured the team championship with 108 points, while UW-Stevens Point finished second with 64. UW-Oshkosh placed sixth in the 11-team event with 35.5 points.

Titans Top Blugolds With Pin In Last Bout


Nate MuckerheideNate Muckerheide's (Jr. • Oostburg) pin of Larry Moen in the final bout of the match provided the winning points as the UW-Oshkosh wrestling team defeated UW-Eau Claire, 25-22, on Friday (Feb. 6) in Eau Claire.

UW-Oshkosh (5-10/1-4 WIAC) entered the final bout trailing 23-19, but gained the victory after Muckerheide (9-3) stuck Moen to the mat in 1:19 for his team-leading seventh pin of the season. Following the pin, UW-Eau Claire (2-5/1-4 WIAC) had one team point subtracted due to an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

In addition to Muckerheide, other victors on the mat for the Titans were Luke Madson (Sr. • Clinton) at 141 pounds and Justin Lancaster (Jr. • Monroe) at 157. Madson defeated Tony D'Autuono, 6-0, while Lancaster routed Matt Renkas, 11-0. Madson raised his record to 7-10 on the season and Lancaster to 16-7.

UW-Oshkosh also benefited from a pair of forfeit victories as Chris Stratton (Fr. • Appleton) won at 125 pounds and Sean Fortmann (Jr. • Mukwonago) at 174. Stratton had his record go to 7-17 on the year and Fortmann to 18-13.

Eagles Soar Past Titans


Luke MadsonDespite being extremely competitive in five of the 10 bouts, the UW-Oshkosh wrestling team dropped a 37-0 decision to nationally-ranked UW-La Crosse on Friday (Jan. 30) in Kiel. UW-La Crosse entered the match ranked seventh in the NCAA Division III by the National Wrestling Coaches Association.

UW-La Crosse (16-5/3-1 WIAC) recorded one pin and took three other bouts in the match by major decision. UW-La Crosse wrestlers winning by major decision included top-ranked Ryan Allen, who defeated Nate Muckerheide (Jr. • Oostburg) at 285 pounds, 13-3, and third-ranked Troy Fabry, who ousted Ryan Corbett (Fr. • Wheat Ridge, Colo.) at 149 pounds, 23-6.

UW-Oshkosh (4-10/0-4 WIAC) lost one bout in the match by one point, two by two points and two by three points. The tightest bout came at 141 pounds, where the Eagles' David Silva edged Luke Madson (Sr. • Clinton), 3-2.

UW-La Crosse wrestlers winning by two points, both by 3-1 counts, were Nick Patenaude over Sean Fortmann (Jr. • Mukwonago) at 174 pounds and Marcus Stefonek over Mike Croninger (Jr. • Oshkosh) at 197 pounds. Battling one of the top wrestlers in the country, UW-Oshkosh's Jed Lechleitner (Jr. • Tomahawk) dropped a 19-16 decision to second-ranked Jason Lulloff at 184 pounds.

Titans Topple Raiders, Muskies


Sean FortmannDoug RozelmanBehind seven two-time winners, the UW-Oshkosh wrestling team defeated both the Milwaukee School of Engineering and Lakeland College on Wednesday (Jan. 28) in Sheboygan.

The Titans (4-9) snapped a five-match losing streak by ousting the Milwaukee School of Engineering, 26-9, and host Lakeland College, 44-0.

Winning twice for the Titans were Chris Stratton (Fr. • Appleton) at 125 pounds, Doug Rozelman (Fr. • Greensboro, N.C.) at 133, Luke Madson (Sr. • Clinton) at 141, Justin Lancaster (Jr. • Monroe) at 157, Jason Gruszynske (Jr. • Pickett) at 165, Sean Fortmann (Jr. • Mukwonago) at 174 and Jed Lechleitner (Jr. • Tomahawk) at 184.

UW-Oshkosh captured seven of the 10 bouts against the Milwaukee School of Engineering, including Lancaster's 15-3 rout of Jerry Blahut and Lechleitner's 16-7 thumping of Dan Shefchik. The Titans also received wins of 3-1 from Rozelman over Aaron Gudeyon, 12-9 from Madson over Ryan Forbes and 7-3 from Gruszynske over Greg Snow. Added to the Titans' winning team count was a forfeit victory from Stratton.

UW-Oshkosh's shutout victory over Lakeland College featured forfeit wins from Stratton, Gruszynske and Lechleitner and a pin by Nate Muckerheide (Jr. • Oostburg) at 285 pounds. Muckerheide recorded his sixth pin of the year (10 bouts) by sticking the Muskies' Mark VandenHoogen to the mat in just 47 seconds.

UW-Oshkosh also received wins of 2-0 from Rozelman over Scott Toledo, 12-0 from Madson over Noe DeLeon, 7-4 from Ryan Corbett (Fr. • Wheat Ridge, Colo.) over Luke Bonde at 149 pounds, 10-4 from Lancaster over Sonny Martinez, 13-1 from Fortmann over Tim Vallier and 9-2 from Mike Croninger (Jr. • Oshkosh) over Ryan Rivera at 197 pounds.

Pointers Pierce Titans With Strong Finish


Jason GruszynskeNationally-ranked UW-Stevens Point fell behind early, but captured the last five bouts of the contest to defeat UW-Oshkosh, 29-12, in a wrestling match held Saturday (Jan. 24) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Stevens Point (5-1/3-0 WIAC), ranked fourth in the NCAA Division III by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, opened the match with a 7-0 lead after sixth-ranked Brady Holtz and Joel Burdick posted wins at 133 and 141 pounds, respectively.

UW-Oshkosh (2-9/0-3 WIAC) then took the next three bouts of the match for a 12-7 lead as Ryan Corbett (Fr. • Wheat Ridge, Colo.) at 149 pounds, Justin Lancaster (Jr. • Monroe) at 157 pounds and Jason Gruszynske (Jr. • Pickett) at 165 pounds all recorded wins. Corbett raised his season record to 4-16 with an 8-2 win over Jared Esala, while Lancaster went to 13-6 with a 12-4 victory over Ryan Hansen and Gruszynske to 12-8 with a 20-5 win over Robert Forsyth.

UW-Stevens Point scored 22 unanswered points over the last five bouts to gain the dual meet win. The Pointers' scoring run featured victories by Cody Koenig at 174 pounds and Yan White at 197. Both UW-Stevens Point wrestlers are ranked third in the country, with Koenig defeating UW-Oshkosh's Sean Fortmann (Jr. • Mukwonago), 12-5, and White pinning the Titans' Mike Croninger (Jr. • Oshkosh) in 3:59.

Rangers Overpower Titans


Nate MuckerheideUW-Parkside, the 17th-ranked wrestling team in the NCAA Division II by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, won the last six bouts of the match to defeat UW-Oshkosh, 26-12, on Wednesday (Jan. 21) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Parkside (4-4) opened the match with eight unanswered points after getting wins from Rick Schmoll at 184 pounds and John Goral at 197. Schmoll defeated UW-Oshkosh's Jed Lechleitner (Jr. • Tomahawk), 12-4, while Goral topped the Titans' Mike Croninger (Jr. • Oshkosh), 14-4.

UW-Oshkosh (2-8) took a 12-8 lead in the contest on Nate Muckerheide's (Jr. • Oostburg) pin at 285 pounds and Chris Stratton's (Fr. • Appleton) forfeit victory at 125. Muckerheide stuck the Rangers' Matt Meyer to the mat in 4:44 to remain unbeaten this season in seven matches. The pin was Muckerheide's team-leading fifth of the year.

UW-Parkside rallied from its mild 12-8 deficit by recording six three-point decisions to take control of the match. The tightest bout during the Rangers' match-ending scoring spree came at 174 pounds, where UW-Parkside's Ben Theim defeated UW-Oshkosh's Sean Fortmann (Jr. • Mukwonago), 3-2.

Early Pins Propel Pioneers Past Titans


Justin LancasterWinning the first four bouts of the match, including two by pin, the UW-Platteville wrestling team defeated UW-Oshkosh, 28-9, on Tuesday (Jan. 20) in Platteville.

Steve Paul and Zach Chambers started the scoring for UW-Platteville (5-12/2-2 WIAC) by recording pins at 125 and 133 pounds, respectively. Paul pinned UW-Oshkosh's Chris Stratton (Fr. • Appleton) in 3:42, while Chambers pinned the Titans' Doug Rozelman (Fr. • Greensboro, N.C.) in 3:52.

The Pioneers increased their lead to 18-0 before the Titans' Justin Lancaster (Jr. • Monroe) posted an 8-3 victory over Ken Francois at 157 pounds. Lancaster raised his season record to 12-5 with the win.

In addition to Lancaster, UW-Oshkosh (2-7/0-2 WIAC) also received wins from Sean Fortmann (Jr. • Mukwonago) at 174 pounds and Nate Muckerheide (Jr. • Oostburg) at 285. Fortmann raised season mark to 15-10 by edging UW-Platteville's Peter Moe, 4-3, while Muckerheide remained unbeaten in six matches this year by defeating the Pioneers' Ryan Rozek.
