Four State Champions
Highlight Titans' Recruiting Class

Wisconsin high school champions Eric Enderby of Luxemburg-Casco, Jared Jaminski of Wisconsin Rapids, Chad Leviner of Mukwonago and Brad Welter of Merrill headline the list of recruits for the UW-Oshkosh wrestling team's 2007-08 season.

Jaminski is a two-time Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) Division 1 champion. This past season, Jaminski posted an 11-2 win over Anthony VanderHei of Hortonville to win the 125-pound weight class. In 2006, he tallied a 2-1 overtime victory over Jonny August of Pulaski to take the 119-pound weight division.

Like Jaminski, Leviner is also a two-time WIAA Division 1 champion. Last winter, Leviner outscored Darren Langer of DeForest, 12-9, to claim the 112-pound championship. In 2006, he registered an 18-12 win over Adam VanSchyndel of Kaukauna to acquire the 103-pound title. Leviner finished third in the 103-pound weight class in 2005.

Welter won the 2007 WIAA Division 1 title at 145 pounds with his pin of Tomah's Jacob McGinnis in 3:04. The victory came one year after he dropped a 7-6 decision to Muskego's Riley Kreuzer in the championship bout at 140 pounds. Welter placed third in the 140-pound weight class in 2005.

Enderby is the lone transfer of the quartet, coming to UW-Oshkosh after spending the past two seasons at NCAA Division II UW-Parkside. In 2005, Enderby compiled a 7-4 win over Kendall Vogel of Pioneer Westfield High School to capture the WIAA Division 2 title at 135 pounds. He placed fifth in the 135-pound weight class in at the WIAA Division 2 Tournament in 2004.

Also mentioned in the list of 13 recruits are three-time state high school tournament qualifiers Eric Reichenbach of Edgar and Eric Allen of Markesan. Two-time state high school tournament competitors attending UW-Oshkosh are Joe Decono of Watertown and Jason Laplante of New Berlin West.

Other state high school tournament participants coming to UW-Oshkosh are Eric Coughlin of Columbus, Lance Houghdahl of Turtle Lake-Clayton and Travis Stolze of Wausau East. Houghdahl is a transfer from Minnesota State University.

Completing UW-Oshkosh's recruiting class are Nate and Nick Stetzer of Wausau East High School. Both wrestlers were three-time WIAA Division I sectional tournament qualifiers.

InterMat Wrestling ranked UW-Oshkosh's recruiting class for 2007 among the finest in the NCAA Division III. Among the other NCAA Division III schools mentioned were North Central College (Ill.), Olivet College (Mich.) and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

Dorner Earns All-America Status At NCAA Championship

Adam DornerUW-Oshkosh's Adam Dorner (Sr. • Casco) finished eighth in the 174-pound weight class to obtain All-America honors at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championship held Friday and Saturday (March 2-3) in Dubuque, Iowa. 

Dorner (29-18), who became the first UW-Oshkosh wrestler to receive All-America acclamation since 1999, compiled a 2-3 record during his inaugural appearance at the NCAA Division III Championship. He lost a 5-1 decision to sixth-seeded Treavor LeBlanc (26-7) of State University of New York-Cortland in the seventh-place match.

Dorner began his two days of activity with an 8-2 victory over fifth-seeded Jason Zastrow (28-7) of Wartburg College (Iowa). He then lost an 8-4 decision to fourth-seeded Jonathan Dolan (17-2) of Williams College (Mass.) in the quarterfinals.

Dorner bounced back from his loss to Dolan by posting a 3-2 win over Benjamin Plowman (26-14) of Ohio Northern University in the consolation round. He then dropped a 5-2 decision to Eric Bath (17-5) of UW-Stevens Point. Dorner had defeated Bath twice earlier this season, including by a 4-1 score at the WIAC Championship.

Dorner finished his UW-Oshkosh career with a 74-66 record. Prior to this season, Dorner posted won-lost ledgers of 17-13 in 2006, 15-19 in 2005 and 13-16 in 2003.

Augsburg College (Minn.) scored 135.5 points to capture its second NCAA Division III wrestling title in three seasons and 10th overall. Defending champion Wartburg College finished second with 99.5 points, while UW-La Crosse placed third with 92.5, Luther College (Iowa) fourth with 86 and The College of New Jersey fifth with 46.5.

UW-Oshkosh counted 4.5 points to share 37th place in the team standings with John Carroll University (Ohio), Rochester Institute of Technology (N.Y.), Thiel College (Pa.) and the University of Chicago (Ill.). A total of 50 schools scored points at this year's championship.

Luedtke, Titans Receive Scholar All-America Awards

Kevin LuedtkeUW-Oshkosh's Kevin Luedtke (Jr. • Two Rivers) was one of 97 student-athletes named to the 2007 NCAA Division III Scholar All-America Team by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA). 

Luedtke competed at 165 pounds for the Titans this past season and compiled a 23-19 record with two pins. He was a fourth-place finisher at the WIAC Championship held Feb. 18 in La Crosse. Luedtke, a physical education major who owns a 3.04 cumulative grade point average, tallied an 11-19 record in 2006 and a 6-11 mark with two pins in 2005.

Other WIAC wrestlers receiving NCAA Division III Scholar All-America honors were Lance Valiquette of UW-Eau Claire, Josh Chelf, Scott Dorn, Jacob Larsen, Jason Lulloff, Ross Needham, Tim Palmer and Pat Parrillo of UW-La Crosse, Zach Chambers, Ryan Higgins and Ryan Rozek of UW-Platteville, Tyler Wozniak of UW-Stevens Point and Tom Trieloff of UW-Whitewater.

In the team category, UW-Oshkosh was one of 20 squads cited for its academic performance. Case Western Reserve University (Ohio) compiled a 3.580 cumulative grade point average to capture the Scholar Team Award, while Messiah College (Pa.) finished second with a mark of 3.550. UW-Oshkosh ranked 20th with a 3.170 cumulative grade point average. Other WIAC schools recognized were third-place UW-La Crosse (3.500) and 17th-place UW-Whitewater (3.220).

Dorner To Wrestle At NCAA Championship

Adam DornerUW-Oshkosh will be represented at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championship for the first time since 2001 when Adam Dorner (Sr. • Casco) competes in the event's 174-pound weight class this weekend.

Wrestling is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. on Friday (March 2) and 10:30 a.m. on Saturday (March 3) at the Five Flags Center in Dubuque, Iowa. On the line in the 34th annual tournament will be one team title and 10 individual championships, as well as eight All-America awards in each of the 10 weight classes.

Dorner owns a 27-15 record following his second-place showing at the WIAC Championship held Feb. 18 in La Crosse. He looks to become the first UW-Oshkosh wrestler to earn All-America status since Joel Dziedzic finished eighth in the 149-pound weight class at the 1999 NCAA Division III Championship.

Dorner is one of 14 participants in this year's 174-pound weight class. Other competitors are Eric Bath of UW-Stevens Point (13-4), Josh Chelf of UW-La Crosse (39-3), Jonathan Dolan of Williams College (15-0), Robert Gotreau of Augsburg College (38-4), Robert Larson of the University of Dubuque (18-10), Treavor LeBlanc of State University of New York-Cortland (23-5), Paul Meirick of Luther College (13-6), Gregory Osgoodby of The College of New Jersey (38-5), Benjamin Plowman of Ohio Northern University (25-13), Eric Van Patten of State University of New York-Brockport (22-13), Kyle Vanderhyde of Olivet College (24-4), Andrew Winfield of McDaniel College (19-3) and Jason Zastrow of Wartburg College (28-5).

Dorner has compiled a 72-63 record during his four-year UW-Oshkosh career. Prior to this season, Dorner posted records of 17-13 in 2006, 15-19 in 2005 and 13-16 in 2003. His resume also includes four career pins.

Expected to contend for the team title are 2005 champion Augsburg College, Luther College, UW-La Crosse and defending champion Wartburg College.

Titans Finish Sixth At WIAC Championship

Adam Dorner (Sr. • Casco) finished second and four of his teammates fourth as UW-Oshkosh placed sixth at the WIAC Wrestling Championship held Sunday (Feb. 18) in La Crosse.

UW-La Crosse won seven of the 10 individual titles and claimed the team championship with 152.5 points. It was the Eagles' 10th straight WIAC wrestling title and 11th overall.

UW-Stevens Point ranked second in the seven-team meet with 114.5 points, while UW-Whitewater finished third with 96, UW-Eau Claire fourth with 89.5, UW-Platteville fifth with 76, UW-Oshkosh sixth with 62 and Lawrence University seventh with 53.5. UW-Stevens Point has finished second at the WIAC Championship seven times in the past eight years.

Winning individual titles for UW-La Crosse were Jordan Kolinski at 133 pounds, Jake Larsen at 149, Ross Needham at 157, Tim Palmer at 165, Josh Chelf at 174, Jason Lulloff at 184 and Dan Laurent at 285. It was third championship for both Lulloff and Needham and the second for both Chelf and Larsen.

UW-Stevens Point owned two of the remaining three individual champions as Jake Calhoun took first place at 125 pounds and Tyler Wozniak at 197. Wozniak was named the WIAC’s John Peterson Wrestler of the Meet.

UW-Platteville's Zach Chambers captured the individual title at 141 pounds for the second straight season.

Dorner (27-15) placed second at 174 pounds after losing 12-0 to UW-La Crosse's Chelf in the championship match. Dorner advanced to the title bout by defeating Adam Moe of UW-Whitewater, 16-6, and Eric Bath of UW-Stevens Point, 4-1.

Taking fourth place for UW-Oshkosh were Scott Rhoads (Fr. • West Bend) at 157 pounds, Kevin Luedtke (Jr. • Two Rivers) at 165, Pat Detmer (Jr. • Lodi) at 184 and Justin Schmalfeldt (Fr. • Burlington) at 197.

Rhoads (4-4) posted a 2-2 record in the tournament, including a 10-2 loss to UW-Stevens Point's Chris Brown in the third-place match. He registered a 5-2 win over UW-Eau Claire's Patrick Senzig in the first round before dropping a 4-3 decision to UW-La Crosse's Needham in the semifinals. Rhoads also pinned UW-Whitewater's Matt Schuck in 6:13.

Luedtke (23-19) split his four matches, including a loss on a pin in 4:45 to UW-Whitewater's Thomas Trieloff in the third-place bout. He suffered a 9-7 loss to Trieloff in the first round before defeating UW-Platteville's Cory Zuberbier, 9-7, and UW-Stevens Point's Joshua Ison, 11-5.

Following a first round bye, Detmer (13-19) lost a 10-0 decision to UW-La Crosse's Lulloff in the semifinals. Detmer then edged UW-Eau Claire's Nick Hoeft, 3-2, before losing a 13-3 decision to UW-Whitewater's Karl Voeck in the third-place match. Detmer finished the tournament with a 1-2 record.

Schmalfeldt (30-7) won two of his first three contests before losing a 10-0 decision to UW-La Crosse's Jim Swanson in the third-place match. Schmalfeldt followed a 9-5 victory over Lawrence University's Jack Peters in the first round with a 7-0 setback to UW-Stevens Point's Wozniak. He then came back to edge UW-Eau Claire's Josh Holforty, 4-3.

Other UW-Oshkosh competitors were Kyle Kleuskens (Fr. • Freedom) at 125 pounds (1-2 record), Chris Stratton (Sr. • Appleton) at 133 (0-2 record), Derek Koenig (So. • Cleveland) at 141 (1-3 record), John Dangles (Fr. • Naperville) at 149 (0-2 record) and Kyle Coleman (Sr. • Poplar) at 285 (0-2 record).

In addition to the 10 individual champions, the WIAC will also send nine other wrestlers to the NCAA Division III Championship on March 2-3 in Dubuque, Iowa.

WIAC athletes receiving at-large bids to the national meet were Austin Bautista of UW-Whitewater at 141 pounds, Ryan Higgins of UW-Platteville at 149, Jesse Milks of UW-Platteville at 157, Lance Valiquette of UW-Eau Claire at 165, Dorner of UW-Oshkosh and Bath of UW-Stevens Point at 174, Craig Bollig of UW-Whitewater at 184 and Mike Schmidt of UW-Whitewater and Swanson of UW-La Crosse at 197.

UW-La Crosse's Dave Malecek was selected as the WIAC’s Mertz Mortorelli Coach of the Year, while UW-La Crosse's Lulloff was voted as the recipient of the WIAC’s Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete Award.

Titans To Compete At WIAC Championship

UW-La Crosse will look to add to its league-record winning streak of nine consecutive titles at the 2007 WIAC Wrestling Championship that will be held Sunday (Feb. 18) in La Crosse.

UW-La Crosse has posted a 13-1 dual meet mark this season, with the lone loss coming to UW-Platteville by a 25-21 margin on Nov. 30, and is ranked third in the NCAA Division III by the National Wrestling Coaches Association. The Eagles return five conference champions from a year ago and boast six wrestlers ranked in the top eight in their weight class, including a pair of top-ranked individuals.

UW-Stevens Point has registered four straight second-place finishes at the conference championship and brings a No. 17 national ranking into this year’s event, while UW-Eau Claire is ranked 18th, UW-Platteville 20th and UW-Whitewater 23rd. The Pointers are the last team other than UW-La Crosse to win a league title after securing the 1997 championship.

UW-La Crosse senior Jason Lulloff is a two-time WIAC champion at 184 pounds, securing titles in 2004 and 2006. He is the top-ranked individual in the country this year and owns a 22-3 mark with four pins. UW-Stevens Point junior Craig Bollig has posted a 20-6 record.

Fellow seniors Jim Swanson and Ross Needham are two-time defending champions at 197 pounds and 157 pounds, respectively. Swanson is the ranked third in the country and has posted a 5-2 record this season with three pins. UW-Oshkosh freshman Justin Schmalfeldt (Burlington) is 28-5 with a team-best seven pins and UW-Stevens Point senior Tyler Wozniak is 29-4.

Needham has logged a 23-5 record this season and enters this weekend’s activities ranked fifth nationally. UW-Platteville freshman Jesse Milks is 23-6 with five pins, while UW-Whitewater sophomore Pat Nagel is 21-18.

Junior Josh Chelf won the 174-pound title in 2006 after securing runner-up honors during the 2005 event. He is the top-ranked wrestler in the country and boasts a 36-3 record with a team-best 17 pins. Challenging Chelf could be Lawrence senior John Budi who has compiled a 16-7 mark, UW-Oshkosh senior Adam Dorner (Casco) who is 25-14 and UW-Whitewater senior Adam Moe who is 25-10 with a team-high 18 pins.

Sophomore Patt Parrillo captured the 125-pound title at the 2006 championship. He owns a 11-6 record in 2007, while UW-Whitewater sophomore Jeremy Johnson is 17-14 with eight pins and UW-Stevens Point junior Jake Calhoun is 13-6 with seven pins.

At 133 pounds, expect UW-Eau Claire sophomore Andy Miller, UW-La Crosse junior Jordan Kolinski and UW-Stevens Point sophomore Jered Kern to contend for the crown. Miller carries a 24-11 mark into the league festivities, while Kolinski is 4-1 and Kern is 17-17.

UW-Platteville returns a pair of champions from a year ago in senior Zach Chambers and sophomore Ryan Higgins. Chambers claimed the 141-pound title and boasts a 21-3 record with six pins this season. Also competing will be UW-Eau Claire freshman Andrew Johnston who is 20-12 and UW-Whitewater freshman Austin Bautista who is 25-11.

Higgins captured the 149-pound crown and has registered a 25-2 mark this season. He will be challenged by UW-La Crosse senior Jacob Larsen, the defending national champion, who is ranked fifth nationally and owns a 9-4 record and UW-Eau Claire senior Dave Vanevenhoven who is 17-10.

The 165-pound bracket will feature UW-La Crosse junior Tim Palmer who is ranked second nationally and carries a 33-9 record into this season’s event. UW-Eau Claire senior Lance Valiquette is 27-10 and Lawrence freshman Sam Laes is 19-9.

A quartet of competitors lead the field at 285 pounds, including UW-Platteville senior Ryan Rozek, UW-La Crosse freshman Dan Laurent and UW-Whitewater junior Derrik Johnson. Rozek is 19-12 with a team-high 13 pins, while Laurent is 26-7 with 15 pins and Johnson has compiled a 31-20 mark. UW-Eau Claire senior Justin McAuly placed second at 197 pounds a year ago and is 21-12 at 285 pounds this season.

Each league champion, along with nine at-large qualifiers will advance to the NCAA Division III Championship on March 2-3 in Dubuque, Iowa.

Titans Fend Off Vikings

Derek KoenigThe UW-Oshkosh wrestling team jumped out to a 12-0 lead and held on for a 24-15 victory over Lawrence University on Friday (Feb. 9) in Appleton.

UW-Oshkosh (6-7/2-4 WIAC) opened the match with three straight victories, including Justin Schmalfeldt's (Fr. • Burlington) pin of Jack Peters in 5:54 at 197 pounds. Schmalfeldt's team-leading seventh pin of the season followed victories by the Titans' Adam Dorner (Sr. • Casco) at 174 pounds and Eli Felts (So. • Appleton) at 184. Dorner edged John Budi, 7-4, while Felts trimmed Joe Austin, 6-2.

Lawrence University (4-7/0-6 WIAC) then won three consecutive contests before UW-Oshkosh's Derek Koenig (So. • Cleveland) pinned Matt Meiselman in 1:39 at 141 pounds. Lawrence University answered Koenig's pin in the following bout as Tony Norton stuck John Dangles (Fr. • Naperville, Ill.) to the mat in 2:27 at 149 pounds.

UW-Oshkosh took an 18-15 lead into the final two contests and secured the victory with wins by Dallas Moe (Fr. • Seymour) at 157 pounds and Kevin Luedtke (Jr. • Two Rivers) at 165. Moe defeated Ryan Dummann, 9-3, while Luedtke ousted Sam Laes, 10-7.

In addition to Norton, Lawrence University received victories from Kenny Hamm at 285 pounds, James Williamson at 125 and Tony Kazik at 133. Hamm edged Pat Detmer (Jr. • Lodi), 4-2, while Williamson topped Kyle Kleuskens (Fr. • Freedom), 6-4 in overtime. Kazik earned a 9-4 win over Chris Stratton (Sr. • Appleton).

UW-Oshkosh will compete at the WIAC Championship on Feb. 18 in La Crosse. The Titans finished sixth at the event a year ago and fifth in 2005.

Titans Take Fifth At UW-Eau Claire Invitational

UW-Oshkosh, which finished eighth at the event a year ago, tallied 181 points in the 10-team tournament. Augsburg College (Minn.) won the event with 347 points, while UW-La Crosse finished second with 205, UW-Stevens Point third with 197 and UW-Eau Claire fourth with 192.

Schmalfeldt, who was wrestling at 197 pounds, started his agenda by beating UW-La Crosse's Tim Winker, 8-5. He then lost 9-2 to UW-Stevens Point's Tyler Wozniak and defeated St. Olaf College's (Minn.) Steven Wood, 7-3. Schmalfeldt won his third-place match by an injury default over Winker.

Detmer went 2-2 at 184 pounds. His activity began with a 6-3 loss to UW-La Crosse's Brenden Faust and a 5-3 win over UW-Eau Claire's Nick Hoeft. Detmer then pinned fellow UW-Oshkosh wrestler Eric Kuchan (Jr. • Whitewater) in 1:50 and lost 10-3 to Lakeland College's Paul Hartl.

Competing at 174 pounds, Dorner started his schedule with a 15-0 win over UW-Platteville's Mark Theim. He then lost 5-3 to Wartburg College's Dan Schulte, defeated UW-Oshkosh teammate
Eli Felts (So. • Appleton), 6-2, and lost 8-2 to Wartburg College's Craig Kreman.

UW-Oshkosh also had James Dederich (Fr. • Menomonee Falls), Derek Koenig (So. • Cleveland), Kevin Luedtke (Jr. • Two Rivers) and Felts register 2-2 records in the tournament.

Blugolds Slip Past Titans

Adam DornerThe UW-Eau Claire wrestling team remained undefeated in the WIAC with a 25-12 victory over UW-Oshkosh on Thursday (Jan. 25) in Kolf Sports Center.

The Blugolds won seven bouts, including a pin by Andy Miller over the Titans' Chris Stratton (Sr. • Appleton) with 18 seconds left in their 133-pound match.

UW-Eau Claire (11-4/4-0 WIAC) won two matches by one point, an 8-7 decision by Andy Johnston over Derek Koenig (So. • Cleveland) at 141 pounds and a 2-1 result by Nick Hoeft over Eli Felts (So. • Appleton) at 184. The Blugolds also received a 12-10 win from Lance Valiquette over Kevin Luedtke (Jr. • Two Rivers) at 165 pounds.

UW-Oshkosh (4-7/1-4 WIAC) got off to a 9-0 lead as Justin Schmalfeldt (Fr. • Burlington) posted a 8-2 victory over Justin Mc Auly at 285 pounds and Kyle Kleuskens (Fr. • Freedom) received a forfeit win at 125.

After wins by Miller and Johnston evened the score at 9-9, UW-Eau Claire went ahead 16-9 after a 12-2 win by Dave Vanevenhoven over Morgan Sickinger (Jr. • Manitowoc) at 149 pounds and a 12-5 victory by Pat Senzig over Dallas Moe (Fr. • Seymour) at 157.

UW-Oshkosh's Adam Dorner (Sr. • Casco) closed the Titans' deficit to 19-12 with a 6-4 win over Joey Miller at 174 pounds.

After Hoeft's narrow victory, Josh Holforty finished up the Blugolds' scoring with a 7-1 victory over Pat Detmer (Jr. • Lodi) at 197 pounds.

NCAA Division II Rangers Oust Titans

Justin SchmalfeldtJustin Schmalfeldt (Fr. • Burlington) was the lone winner for the UW-Oshkosh wrestling team as it dropped a 31-3 decision to NCAA Division II UW-Parkside on Friday (Jan. 19) in Kenosha.

Schmalfeldt defeated UW-Parkside's Joe Dhein, 10-4, in the 285-pound match to improve his record 22-4 on the season.

The Titans also had Morgan Sickinger (Jr. • Manitowoc) lose a 6-4 decision to Craig DeGreef at 141 pounds and Adam Dorner (Sr. • Casco) drop a 5-4 result to Albert Morgan at 174.

Other UW-Oshkosh results featured 125-pounder Chris Stratton (Sr. • Appleton) losing by technical fall in 2:00 to Brandon Kircher and 149-pounder John Dangles (Fr. • Naperville, Ill.) losing 14-2 to Craig Becker.

UW-Oshkosh's Dallas Moe (Fr. • Seymour) was pinned by UW-Parkside's Brad Becker at the 5:00 mark of their 157-pound match while 165-pounder Kevin Luedtke (Jr. • Two Rivers) was defeated 8-1 by Kyle Becker 8-1. The Titans' Eli Felts (So. • Appleton) lost 3-0 to Luke Haag at 184 pounds while Pat Detmer (Jr. • Lodi) was blanked 10-0 by Jon Treml at 197.

Both teams had a double forfeit at 133 pounds.

Titans Handed A Pair Of Setbacks

Adam DornerKevin LuedtkeThe UW-Oshkosh wrestling team owned the winner in just six of the 20 bouts as it dropped decisions of 28-18 to Harper College (Ill.) and 34-10 to nationally-ranked UW-Whitewater on Wednesday (Jan. 17) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Oshkosh (4-5/1-3 WIAC) opened its activity with a loss to Harper College (3-3). The Hawks took a 22-18 lead into the last bout and secured the victory when Alex Delonis won by an injury default over the Titans' Kyle Coleman (Sr. • Poplar) at 285 pounds.

UW-Oshkosh had four wrestlers pick up victories against Harper College, including Pat Detmer's (Jr. • Lodi) 10-7 win over Alex Knipp at 184 pounds and Justin Schmalfeldt's (Fr. • Burlington) 6-3 triumph over Sean Evans at 197. The Titans also received a pair of forfeits as Chris Stratton (Sr. • Appleton) won at 125 pounds and Adam Dorner (Sr. • Casco) at 174.

UW-Oshkosh lost a pair of 6-4 decisions to Harper College as Derek Koenig (So. • Cleveland) was edged by David Fear at 141 pounds and Kevin Luedtke (Jr. • Two Rivers) by Justin Milos at 165.

Harper College had the lone pin in the match as 157-pounder Dallas Hesseltine stuck the Titans' Dallas Moe (Fr. • Seymour) to the mat in 2:19.

The Hawks also received a win on a forfeit by Mike Ryan at 133 pounds and a 10-2 victory from Jordan McCabe at 149 pounds.

UW-Oshkosh's second match resulted in a league loss to UW-Whitewater (12-4/1-2 WIAC). The Warhawks jumped out to a 19-0 lead and pulled away at the finish with 15 points over the last three bouts.

UW-Oshkosh celebrated only two victories in the match, including Dorner's pin of Adam Latella in 4:58 at 174 pounds. The Titans also received a 13-0 win from Luedtke over Jake D'Acquisto at 165 pounds.

UW-Oshkosh lost two narrow decisions as Morgan Sickinger (Jr. • Manitowoc) was clipped 3-2 by Austin Bautista at 141 pounds while Detmer was trimmed 8-6 by Karl Voeck at 184.

UW-Whitewater, ranked 30th in the NCAA Division III by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, registered its lone pin when Seth Pietrzyle glued Schmalfeldt to the mat in 1:41.

The Warhawks also received wins of 11-7 from Jeremy Johnson at 125 pounds, 7-0 from Gary Reid at 149 and 15-1 from Pat Nagel at 157. UW-Whitewater wrestlers winning on a forfeit were Kyle Wachholder at 133 pounds and Derrik Johnson at 285.

Titans To Host Dan Gable Collegiate Open

The UW-Oshkosh wrestling team will host the Fourth Annual Dan Gable Collegiate Open on Saturday (Jan. 13) in Kolf Sports Center.

Nearly 100 athletes are expected to take part in the event, including competitors from the University of Michigan, University of Missouri, University of Wisconsin, UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse, UW-Oshkosh and UW-Parkside.

The tournament, named after American wrestling legend Dan Gable, begins at 9 a.m. Proceeds from the event go to the endowment fund that supports the UW-Oshkosh wrestling program.

Titans Finish Seventh At Cornell College Invitational

Adam DornerJustin SchmalfeldtJustin Schmalfeldt (Fr. • Burlington) captured the 197-pound title as the UW-Oshkosh wrestling team finished seventh at the Cornell College Invitational held Friday (Jan. 5) and Saturday (Jan. 6) in Mount Vernon, Iowa.

UW-Oshkosh, which finished 12th at the event a year ago, totaled 49 points to share seventh place in the 14-team tournament with Morningside College (Iowa).

Buena Vista University (Iowa) won this year's tournament with 140.5 points, while William Penn University (Iowa) finished second with 135.5, Coe College (Iowa) third with 112, Cornell College fourth with 82.5 and Wartburg College (Iowa) fifth with 71.5.

Schmalfeldt went unbeaten in four matches to win his weight class, including a 9-6 victory over top-seeded Ben Strandberg of Buena Vista University in the championship match. He also pinned Jacob Barnes of St. John’s University (Minn.) in 5:05, received a win on a medical forfeit from Nick Bitner of Coe College and compiled a 4-3 victory over Jorge Ortiz of William Penn University.

Adam Dorner (Sr. • Casco) added a sixth-place finish for the Titans at 174 pounds. He posted a 3-3 record in the tournament, including an 11-9 loss to Mike Bishof of the University of Chicago (Ill.) in the fifth-place contest. Dorner opened the tournament by registering wins of 15-2 over Jon Erickson of UW-Eau Claire, 8-4 over Weston Frahm of Morningside College and 15-3 over Bishof. He then lost on a pin in 4:24 to Dan Schulte of Wartburg College and dropped a 9-6 decision to top-seeded Josh Murray of Buena Vista University.

UW-Oshkosh had nine other competitors in the tournament as Derek Koenig (So. • Cleveland) went 4-2 (two pins) and Morgan Sickinger (Jr. • Manitowoc) 1-2 (one pin) at 141 pounds, John Dangles (Fr. • Naperville, Ill.) 0-2 and Paul Gretzinger (Fr. • Pulaski) 2-2 at 149 pounds, James Dederich (Fr. • Menomonee Falls) 2-2 (one pin) and Kevin Luedtke (Jr. • Two Rivers) 3-2 (one pin) at 165 pounds, Eli Felts (So. • Appleton) 1-2 and Alex Sell (So. • North Fond du Lac) 0-2 at 174 pounds and Pat Detmer (Jr. • Lodi) 2-2 (two pins) at 184.

Titans Oust Muskies, Raiders

Adam DornerJustin SchmalfeldtThe UW-Oshkosh wrestling team defeated both Lakeland College and the Milwaukee School of Engineering in a triangular held Saturday (Dec. 9) in Sheboygan. UW-Oshkosh (4-3) edged Lakeland College, 22-18, and demolished the Milwaukee School of Engineering, 35-6.

In the opening match against Lakeland College, UW-Oshkosh 285-pounder Justin Schmalfeldt (Fr. • Burlington) gave the Titans a 6-0 lead when he pinned Mark Vanden Hoogen in 2:30. After UW-Oshkosh's Chris Stratton (Sr. • Appleton) lost 14-7 to David Copp at 125 pounds, the Titans' Dan Akright (Fr. • Sheboygan Falls) defeated Clint Harbourd, 9-7, in a 133-pound contest.

Lakeland College took a 15-9 lead after winning the next three weight classes. Korey Theil got the Muskies started with a 7-2 victory over Derek Koenig (So. • Cleveland) at 141 pounds. Jake Frias then followed with an 8-1 win over Paul Gretzinger (Fr. • Pulaski) at 149 pounds. Lakeland College's Jonas Flok finished the Muskies’ winning streak by pinning Dallas Moe (Fr. • Seymour) in 1:14 at 157 pounds.

Kevin Luedtke (Jr. • Two Rivers) closed UW-Oshkosh’s deficit to 15-12 after beating the Muskies' Cody Klopp, 9-5, in a 165-pound match. UW-Oshkosh took an 18-15 lead when Adam Dorner (Sr. • Casco) received a forfeit at 174 pounds.

Lakeland College's Paul Hartl defeated UW-Oshkosh's Pat Detmer (Jr. • Lodi), 8-5, in the 184-pound match to tie the score at 18-18. UW-Oshkosh won the match on Kyle Coleman’s (Sr. • Poplar) 14-6 victory over Brent Lambrie at 197 pounds.

Against the Milwaukee School of Engineering, UW-Oshkosh was just two points away from a shutout as it dropped a pair of 3-2 decisions.

Schmalfeldt recorded his second pin of the day as he flattened the Raiders' Tyler Knutson at the 2:40 mark of their 285-pound contest.

The Milwaukee School of Engineering then sandwiched a loss on a forfeit at 133 pounds with a pair of 3-2 victories as the Raiders' Chris Jackson edged Stratton at 125 pounds and Elliott Gronland trimmed Koenig at 141. The Titans' Akright received the forfeit victory at 133 pounds.

At 149 pounds, UW-Oshkosh's Gretzinger defeated Ryan Forbes, 6-1. The Titans then received an 8-7 win from Moe over Joel Vandebloom at 157 pounds, a 25-9 win from Luedtke over Ryan Baird at 165 pounds, a 4-0 win from Dorner over Tim O'Conner at 174 pounds and a 4-0 victory from Detmer over John Lemmer at 184 pounds.

UW-Oshkosh's Coleman finished the match by pinning Nick Kerchner at the 2:10 mark of their 197-pound scuffle.

Third-Ranked Eagles Defeat Titans

Dan AkrightThe UW-La Crosse wrestling team scored 20 consecutive points and coasted to a 32-10 win over UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday (Dec. 6) in Oshkosh.

With the match tied 6-6, UW-La Crosse received its first of five straight major decisions when the Eagles' Jay Milz blanked Paul Gretzinger (Fr. • Pulaski), 10-0, at 149 pounds.

UW-La Crosse followed with a 13-5 victory by Ross Needham over Dallas Moe (Fr. • Seymour) at 157 pounds, a 9-1 win by Scott Dorn over Kevin Luedtke (Jr. • Two Rivers) at 165, a 11-2 triumph by Josh Chelf over Adam Dorner (Sr. • Casco) at 174 and a 14-3 win by Jason Lulloff over Pat Detmer (Jr. • Lodi) at 184.

UW-La Crosse (5-1/2-1 WIAC) entered the match ranked third in the NCAA Division III by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, while UW-Oshkosh (2-3/1-2 WIAC) was ranked 30th. It was the first time since a 24-18 loss during the 1998-99 season that the Titans had scored double-digit points against the Eagles.

The match started with UW-La Crosse’s Pat Parrillo defeating Kyle Kleuskens (Fr. • Freedom), 11-7, at 125 pounds. UW-Oshkosh received six of its 10 team points when 133-pounder Dan Akright (Fr. • Sheboygan) stuck the Eagles' Mark Girgis to the mat at 2:29. UW-La Crosse knotted the score at 6-6 when Ben Kreuzer defeated Morgan Sickinger (Jr. • Manitowoc), 4-3, at 141 pounds.

Justin Schmalfeldt (Fr. • Burlington) was the other winner for UW-Oshkosh. He registered a 10-2 victory over the Eagles' Andy Moore at 197 pounds.

Dan Laurent finished the match for UW-La Crosse with a pin over UW-Oshkosh's Kyle Coleman (Sr. • Poplar) in 2:07 at 285 pounds.

UW-Oshkosh has lost 15 consecutive dual matches to UW-La Crosse since a victory during the 1989-90 season.

Titans Take Second At
Milwaukee School Of Engineering Invitational

UW-Oshkosh added one third-place and one fourth-place individual result to total 72.5 points and finish second in the eight-team invitational. UW-Platteville took first place with 104.5 points, while Lakeland College scored 68 points to finish third and Lawrence University 49.5 to rank fourth.

Dorner went undefeated in three bouts at 174 pounds to take first place. He beat Wheaton College's (Ill.) Scott Bugenhagen, 12-2, Milwaukee School of Engineering’s Tim O'Conner, 5-2, and Lawrence University's John Budi, 6-3, in the championship match.

Luedtke, who was wrestling in the 165-pound weight class, won his first-three bouts before dropping a 3-1 decision to Tom Kopietz of St. Olaf College (Minn.) in the championship match. He defeated Cody Klopp of Lakeland College, 19-8, John Buntrock of Lawrence University, 22-8 and Cory Zuberbeir of UW-Platteville, 3-2.

Detmer started play at 184 pounds by blanking Craig Noggle of the Milwaukee School of Engineering, 14-0, and ousting Matt Beschta of UW-Platteville, 7-2. He lost 13-4 to Paul Hartt of Lakeland College in the championship match.

Schmalfeldt, competing at 197 pounds, posted a 2-1 record after losing a 6-1 decision to St. Olaf College’s Steven Wood in the title match. He previously pinned Wheaton College’s Dan Glenn in 4:13 and edged UW-Platteville’s Scott Nickolas, 4-0.

Chris Stratton (Sr. • Appleton) and Derek Koenig (So. • Cleveland) also placed in the top four at the invitational. Stratton finished third in the 125-pound weight class after beating teammate Kyle Kleuskens (Fr. • Freedom), 7-2, and Chris Jackson of the Milwaukee School of Engineering, 4-0. Stratton’s agenda opened with a 3-2 loss to Spencer Peterson of UW-Platteville.

Koenig took fourth place with a 2-2 record in the 141-pound weight class. His activity began with a pin of Lakeland College’s Cameron Smit in 57 seconds. Koenig then lost 7-2 to Dana Droessler of UW-Platteville, defeated Kory Theil of Lakeland College, 7-2, and lost 4-3 to Elliott Gronland of the Milwaukee School of Engineering in the third place bout.

Other UW-Oshkosh wrestlers picking up two wins at the invitational were 149-pounder Paul Gretzinger (Fr. • Seymour), 157-pounder James Dederich (Fr. • Menomonee Falls), 197-pounder Kyle Coleman (Sr. • Poplar) and 285-pounder Joe Rodriguez (Fr. • Greenfield).

Pointers Win Battle Of Nationally-Ranked Teams

Calhoun, competing at 125 pounds, pinned UW-Oshkosh's Chris Stratton (Sr. • Appleton) in 2:09 as the Pointers (6-0/1-0 WIAC) won their WIAC debut. UW-Stevens Point entered the match ranked 14th in the NCAA Division III by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, while UW-Oshkosh (2-2/1-1 WIAC) was ranked 30th.

UW-Oshkosh was victorious in three weight classes, including Morgan Sickinger's (Jr. • Manitowoc) win via a forfeit at 141 pounds. The Titans also had Justin Schmalfeldt (Fr. • Burlington) win at 197 pounds and Kyle Coleman (Sr. • Poplar) at 285. Schmalfeldt defeated Mitch Szwet, 7-1, while Coleman ousted Bret Oswald, 7-3.

After an opening forfeit at 141 pounds, UW-Stevens Point edged the Titans in four straight close matches. The Pointers’ Mo Malone won 2-1 at 149 pounds over Paul Gretzinger (Fr. • Pulaski) and Chris Brown followed with a 2-0 shutout of Dallas Moe (Fr. • Seymour) at 157.

UW-Stevens Point's Josh Ison needed overtime to register a 4-2 win over Kevin Luedtke (Jr. • Two Rivers) at 165 pounds, while Eric Bath won 5-2 over Adam Dorner (Sr. • Casco) at 174. Tyler Wozniak gave the Pointers a 16-6 lead with a 12-0 major decision win over Eli Felts (So. • Appleton) at 184 pounds.

Jered Kern finished the match for UW-Stevens Point with another close victory, a 4-2 triumph over Derek Koenig (So. • Cleveland) at 133 pounds.

Titans Land Four Second-Place Finishes In Iowa

Pat Detmer (Jr. • Lodi), Adam Dorner (Sr. • Casco), Paul Gretzinger (Fr. • Pulaski) and Justin Schmalfeldt (Fr. • Burlington) earned second-place finishes to lead UW-Oshkosh's performance at the Coe College Invitational held Saturday (Nov. 18) in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Detmer split his two matches in the 184-pound weight class. He posted a 9-7 win over unattached Andrew Smith before losing a 2-0 decision to Kent Scheff of Waldorf College (Iowa) in the championship match.

Dorner compiled a 2-1 record in the 174-pound weight class, including wins of 2-0 over Grant Jenkins of Wartburg College (Iowa) and 4-2 over Derek Pike of Waldorf College. Dorner lost a 3-2 decision to Jason Zastrow of Wartburg College in the final.

Gretzinger went 3-1 in the 149-pound weight class, losing 12-2 to unattached Aaron Kindelsperger in the championship match. Gretzinger reached the finals by beating unattached Aaron Bartels, 6-1, Billy Dooling of Missouri Baptist University, 5-1, and unattached Alex Rinikere, 3-2.

Schmalfeldt, wrestling in the 285-pound weight class, pinned his first-two opponents before losing a 15-0 decision to top-ranked Blake Gillis of Wartburg College in the championship match. Schmalfeldt tallied pins in 3:01 over Nathan Studnicka of Coe College and 2:34 over Jared Carder of Coe College.

Other UW-Oshkosh wrestlers earning wins at the invitational were 133-pounder Derek Koenig (So. • Cleveland), 157-pounder Nick Hateli (Fr. • Greenfield), 165-ponder Kevin Luedtke (Jr. • Two Rivers) and 197-pounder Kyle Coleman (Sr. • Poplar).

Koenig started his agenda with a 9-5 win over Gannon Hjerleid of Coe College. He then was beaten 4-0 by Jacob Helvey of Wartburg College and pinned in 3:46 by Josh Harding of Coe College. Koenig was pinned in 2:21 by Kalen Lenz of Wartburg College in the fifth-place match.

Hateli went 1-2 in the tournament, including a pin in 1:56 over Eric Siesener of Missouri Baptist University. He lost 18-0 to Aaron Wernimont of Wartburg College and was pinned in 1:09 to Ryan Vogel of Coe College.

Luedtke went 2-2 in the event. He posted wins of 12-3 over unattached Dan Desch and 5-2 over Lucas Pointer of Coe College. Luedtke lost 5-3 to Dustin Cooper of Wartburg College and 4-3 to unattached Drew Vickers.

Coleman placed fifth in the tournament after pinning Jarryd Johnson of Missouri Baptist University in 2:16. Coleman lost his other two bouts, dropping decisions of 7-2 to Jake Head of Waldorf College and 8-3 to Nick Bitner of Coe College.

Titans Take Down 25th-Ranked Pioneers

Adam DornerThe UW-Oshkosh wrestling team started its WIAC schedule in dramatic fashion, upsetting UW-Platteville, 26-19, in a dual meet held Wednesday (Nov. 15) in Oshkosh. UW-Platteville entered the contest ranked 25th in the NCAA Division III by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA).

Tied 13-13 after six bouts, UW-Oshkosh captured three consecutive weight classes to secure the victory. Justin Schmalfeldt (Fr. • Burlington) got UW-Oshkosh started at heavyweight with a 10-5 win over fifth-ranked Ryan Rozek. After Rozek closed to within 6-5, Schmalfeldt scored the last four points of the bout to claim the victory.

Chris Stratton (Sr. • Appleton) kept the Titans going with a 14-4 win over Spencer Peterson at 125 pounds. UW-Oshkosh went ahead 26-13 when 133-pounder Derek Koenig (So • Cleveland) pinned Jeff Gale in 4:05.

Also winning bouts for UW-Oshkosh were Kevin Luedtke (Jr. • Two Rivers) at 165 pounds, Adam Dorner (Sr. • Casco) at 174 and Pat Detmer (Jr. • Lodi) at 184. Luedtke defeated Cory Zuberbeir, 7-3, while Dorner routed Brad Zellner, 17-4. Detmer pinned the Pioneers’ Matt Beschta in 3:24.

UW-Platteville had a pair of pins in the match as Jesse Milks stuck Dallas Moe to the mat in 2:24 at 157 pounds and fifth-ranked Zach Chambers glued Morgan Sickinger (Jr. • Manitowoc) to the ground in 2:46 at 141.

The Pioneers also had eighth-ranked Ryan Higgins record a 12-3 win over Paul Gretzinger (Fr. • Pulaski) at 149 pounds and Scott Nichols register an 8-1 victory over Kyle Coleman (Sr. • Poplar) at 197 pounds.

Titans Open Season With Mixed Results

Dallas moeJustin SchmalfeldtJustin Schmalfeldt (Fr. • Burlington) conquered both of his opponents as the UW-Oshkosh wrestling team opened its 2006-07 season with a victory over the University of Dubuque (Iowa) and a loss to NCAA Division I University of Wisconsin on Friday (Nov. 3) at the KI Convention Center in Green Bay.

The University of Wisconsin went unbeaten in the round-robin event by defeating the University of Dubuque, 49-0, and UW-Oshkosh, 40-3. Prior to its loss to the University of Wisconsin, UW-Oshkosh defeated the University of Dubuque, 29-10.

UW-Oshkosh scored the last 29 points of the match to gain revenge for last year's 31-12 loss to the University of Dubuque. The Titans had the winner in seven of the 10 weight classes, including Pat Detmer (Jr. • Lodi) and Kyle Coleman (Sr. • Poplar) who won on forfeits at 184 and 197 pounds, respectively.

On the mat, UW-Oshkosh received victories from Paul Gretzinger (Fr. • Pulaski) at 149 pounds, Dallas Moe (Fr. • Seymour) at 157, Kevin Luedtke (Jr. • Two Rivers) at 165, Adam Dorner (Sr. • Casco) at 174 and Schmalfeldt at 285.

Dorner recorded the largest triumph for the Titans as he ousted the University of Dubuque's Joe Depew, 13-3. The Titans also had Gretzinger trip Hakeem Mahdi, 9-6, Moe edge Evan Brown, 2-1, Luedtke trim Bobby Larson, 3-2, and Schmalfeldt handle Eric Daughtee, 12-4.

Winners for the University of Dubuque were Jason Francis at 125 pounds, Adam Shumaker at 133 and Dan Ruter at 141.

Francis shutout UW-Oshkosh's Chris Stratton (Sr. • Appleton), 5-0, while Shumaker posted an 11-2 win over Derek Koenig (So. • Cleveland). Ruter posted a 6-2 victory over the Titans’ Justin Talbot (Fr. • Appleton).

As expected, the University of Wisconsin had little difficulty defeating UW-Oshkosh. The lone victory for the Titans came at 285 pounds, where Schmalfeldt pulled out a 7-4 victory over Jordan Hein. Schmalfeldt's victory came in the contest’s final bout.

The University of Wisconsin won two contests against UW-Oshkosh on pins and another on a technical fall. Collin Cudd of the Badgers pinned Stratton in 3:30 at 125 pounds, while Dallas Herbst pinned Coleman in 1:52 at 197. University of Wisconsin’s Zach Tanelli won by a technical fall in 4:06 over Koenig.

Other University of Wisconsin winners were Kyle Ruschell at 141 pounds, Tyler Turner at 149, Mike Metzger at 157, Jake Donar at 165, Matt Maciag at 174 and Justin Peterson at 184.

Ruschell tallied a 17-6 win over UW-Oshkosh’s Talbot, while Turner defeated Gretzinger, 13-3, and Metzger dropped Moe, 8-2. Donar defeated Luedtke, 11-1, while Maciag downed Dorner, 11-1, and Peterson ousted Detmer, 14-2.

Titans To Wrestle Division I Badgers In Season Opener

The UW-Oshkosh wrestling team opens its 2006-07 season with dual meets against the University of Dubuque (Iowa) and NCAA Division I University of Wisconsin on Friday (Nov. 3) at the KI Convention Center in Green Bay.

Competition starts at 8 a.m. as the University of Dubuque battles the University of Wisconsin. The opening match is followed by a 10 a.m. contest involving UW-Oshkosh and the University of Dubuque. The final match of the round-robin format begins at noon as UW-Oshkosh squares off against the University of Wisconsin.

UW-Oshkosh returns nine lettermen from last year's team that posted a 2-13 dual meet record and finished sixth at the WIAC Championship.

It will be the fifth meeting between UW-Oshkosh and the University of Wisconsin, with the Badgers winning last year's match in Green Bay, 51-0. The University of Wisconsin also defeated UW-Oshkosh by scores of 23-12 in 1969-70, 24-8 in 1970-71 and 46-6 in 2004-05.

UW-Oshkosh dropped a 31-12 decision to the University of Dubuque last year.
