Titans Place Seventh At WIAC Championship

Jared JaminskiChad LevinerThe UW-Oshkosh wrestling team failed to win an open round match and finished a disappointing seventh at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship held on Sunday (Feb. 24) in Appleton.

Bolstered by victories in seven weight classes, UW-La Crosse won its league-record 11 straight WIAC wrestling championship. The Eagles totaled 147.50 points to capture its 12th title in program history and match UW-Whitewater for the most in league archives.

UW-Stevens Point finished second for the sixth consecutive season after accumulating 131.50 points. The Pointers were followed by third-place UW-Whitewater with 111.50 points, fourth-place UW-Platteville with 86, fifth-place UW-Eau Claire with 82.5, sixth-place Lawrence University with 43.50 and seventh-place UW-Oshkosh with 42.50.

The 16-point margin of victory was the closest since the 1997 championship when the Pointers defeated the Eagles by a 98-85.5 spread.

Picking up wins for the Titans were Chad Leviner (Fr. • Mukwonago) at 125 pounds, Jared Jaminski (Fr. • Wisconsin Rapids) at 133 pounds, Brad Welter (Fr. • Merrill) at 157 pounds, Eli Felts (Jr. • Appleton) at 174 pounds and Pat Detmer (Sr. • Lodi) at 184 pounds.

Leviner picked up a fourth-place result after being pinned by UW-Stevens Point’s Jacob Calhoun in 4:22 and trimming UW-Platteville’s Andrew Skog, 3-2. Leviner was pinned in the third-place bout in 3:30 by UW-Whitewater’s Max Oldenburg.

Jaminski took fifth-place after losing 11-3 to UW-Stevens Point’s Jered Kern and 4-0 to UW-Whitewater’s Kyle Wacholder. Jaminski finished the championship with a 13-5 victory over UW-Platteville’s Spencer Petersen.

Welter tallied a fifth-place result after being pinned in 2:47 by UW-Whitewater’s Thomas Trieloff and being nipped 9-8 by UW-Stevens Point’s Christopher Brown. Welter defeated UW-Eau Claire’s Jon Ames 5-3 in his final match.

Felts achieved a fifth-place showing when he was defeated by UW-Platteville’s Cory Zuberbier 6-1 and then by UW-Eau Claire’s Josiah Miller 14-4. Felts wrapped up the championship by pinning UW-Whitewater’s Rob Schoner in 4:09.

Detmer wound up in fifth-place when he was overwhelmed by UW-La Crosse’s Joshua Zabel 17-2 and then was trimmed by UW-Whitewater’s David Casper 9-7. Detmer dominated UW-Eau Claire’s Ted Sikowski 9-2 in his last bout.

Other Titans participating in the championship were Alex Mueller (Fr. • Jackson) at 141 pounds, John Dangles (So. • Naperville, Ill.) at 149, Kevin Luedtke (Sr. • Two Rivers) at 165, Eric Kuchan (Sr. • Whitewater) at 197 and Mike Kratz (Jr. • Oconto Falls) at 285.

Titans Disarm Vikings

Pat DetmerThe UW-Oshkosh wrestling team earned the maximum six points in each of its seven victories and rolled to a 42-13 triumph over Lawrence University on Friday (Feb. 15) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Oshkosh (6-14/1-5 WIAC) recorded five pins in the match as Alex Mueller (Fr. • Jackson) won at 141 pounds, Bradon Welter (Fr. • Merrill) at 157, Kevin Luedtke (Sr. • Two Rivers) at 165, Pat Detmer (Sr. • Lodi) at 184 and Mike Kratz (Jr. • Oconto Falls) at 285 pounds. The Titans also had Chad Leviner (Fr. • Mukwonago) and Jared Jaminski (Fr. • Wisconsin Rapids) win on a forfeit at 125 and 133 pounds, respectively.

Kratz opened the match by sticking Jeremy Reider to the mat in 4:40. Following forfeit victories by Leviner and Jaminski, Mueller extended UW-Oshkosh's lead to 24-0 on his pin of Chris Gallegos in 4:13.

Lawrence University (1-8/0-6 WIAC) snapped UW-Oshkosh's string of points in the 149-pound weight class as Tony Norton defeated John Dangles (So. • Naperville, Ill.), 11-0. UW-Oshkosh responded to setback with 12 more points as Welter pinned Matt Meiselman in 3:29 and Luedtke pinned Evan Neuens in 1:55. The pins gave UW-Oshkosh a 36-4 advantage.

Lawrence University picked up two wins in the last three bouts, including Jack Peters' pin of Eric Kuchan (Sr. • Whitewater) in 2:21 at 197 pounds. The Vikings tallied a victory at 174 pounds as Sam Laes edged Eli Felts (Jr. • Appleton), 7-3.

Detmer accounted for UW-Oshkosh's final team points by pinning Dan Shay in 2:13.

The next competition for UW-Oshkosh will be at the WIAC Championship on Feb. 24 in Appleton. The Titans have finished sixth at the meet the past two seasons.

Titans Unable To Cage Third-Ranked Eagles

Alex MuellerThe nationally-ranked UW-La Crosse wrestling team won the last seven bouts en route to a 39-9 victory over UW-Oshkosh on Friday (Feb. 8) in La Crosse.

UW-La Crosse (20-2/5-0 WIAC), ranked third in the NCAA Division III by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, trailed 9-8 before taking the lead for good on Jay Milz's 16-1 triumph over Bradon Welter (Fr. • Merrill) at 157 pounds.

Tim Palmer then won 12-1 over Kevin Luedtke (Sr. • Two Rivers) at 165 pounds to give UW-La Crosse a 17-9 lead and Josh Chelf increased the Eagles' advantage to 23-9 with a pin in 2:40 over Eli Felts (Jr. • Appleton) at 174.

UW-La Crosse closed the match with Josh Zabel's 16-5 win over Pat Detmer (Sr. • Lodi) at 184 pounds, Tim Winker's forfeit victory at 197 and Dan Laurent's pin in 28 seconds over Mike Kratz (Jr. • Oconto Falls) at 285.

UW-La Crosse took the first bout of the match as Brandon Music defeated Chad Leviner (Fr. • Mukwonago), 14-1, at 125 pounds.

UW-Oshkosh (5-14/0-5 WIAC) cut its deficit to 4-3 on Jared Jaminski's (Fr. • Wisconsin Rapids) 10-4 victory over Pat Parrillo at 133 pounds. Parrillo was the 125-pound champion at the 2006 WIAC Championship.

The Titans went ahead 9-4 on Alex Mueller's (Fr. • Jackson) pin in 6:20 of Kevin Barber at 141 pounds. Barber was the 133-pound champion at the 2006 WIAC Championship.

UW-La Crosse then closed UW-Oshkosh's lead to 9-8 on Eric Seppelt's 14-4 victory over John Dangles (So. • Naperville, Ill.) at 149 pounds.

Titans Place Sixth At UW-Eau Claire Invitational

Jared JaminskiKevin LuedtkeJared Jaminski (Fr. • Wisconsin Rapids) and Kevin Luedtke (Sr. • Two Rivers) both took second-place to pace the UW-Oshkosh wrestling team to a sixth-place finish at the UW-Eau Claire Invitational held Saturday (Feb. 2) in Eau Claire.

UW-Oshkosh, which finished fifth at the event a year ago, tallied 69.5 points in the nine-team tournament. St. John's University (Minn.) won the meet with 120.5 points, while UW-Stevens Point finished second with 113, Augsburg College (Minn.) third with 99.5, UW-La Crosse fourth with 92.5 and UW-Eau Claire fifth with 75.

Jaminski, who was wrestling at 133 pounds, started his agenda by beating St. John's University's Sam Morse by technical fall, 23-7 and then defeating Luther College's (Iowa) Steve Andrukaitis, 7-4 in the semifinals. In the championship match Jaminski was tripped up by Augsburg College's Paul Bjorkstrand, 7-1.

Luedtke, who was wrestling at 165 pounds, started the meet with a pin over UW-Milwaukee's Tony Franciosi in 2:07, doubling-up UW-Eau Claire's Seth Hendricks, 12-6 and slipping by Augsburg College's Jake Grygelko in double overtime, 0-0. In the championship match Luedtke was beaten by St. John's University's Matt Schrupp, 11-1.

UW-Oshkosh's Eli Felts (Jr. • Appleton) picked up a fourth-place result at 174 pounds. Felts won his opening bout over Luther College's Bradon Reyerson, 7-3 before being blanked by UW-Stevens Point's Eric Bath, 8-0. Felts finished the day by beating UW-Milwaukee's Darin Kwilinski, 6-2 and then being trimmed by St. John's University's Grant Eustice, 3-2.

Sporting a 3-2 record for the Titans was Brad Welter (Fr. • Merrill) at 157 pounds. After losing his opening bout to St. John's University's Matt Baarson, 13-2, Welter picked up consecutive victories over Augsburg College's Spencer Flodeen, 7-5 and UW-Stevens Point's Dan Wierzba, 3-0. Welter finished his day with a loss to St. John's University's Ben Anderson, 13-3.

Mike Kratz (Jr. • Oconto Falls) went 2-2 at 285 pounds. His activity began with a loss to Luther College's Allyn Plattner at the 2:46 mark by pin and then a victory over UW-Eau Claire's John Berlin, 11-3. Kratz picked up a pin at 1:12 over St. John's University's Will Purdy and loss his last bout to UW-Eau Claire's Nick Hoeft, 5-1.

Nick Stetzer (Fr. • Wausau) at 125 pounds, Alex Mueller (Fr. • Jackson) at 141 pounds and John Dangles (So. • Naperville, Ill.) at 149 pounds each tallied one win at the invitational.

Blugolds Slip Past Titans

Bradon WelterThe UW-Eau Claire wrestling team had three pins and two major decisions among its six victories and defeated UW-Oshkosh, 29-19, on Friday (Feb. 1) in Eau Claire.

UW-Eau Claire (11-11/3-0 WIAC) scored the first 10 points of the match as Brandon Page pinned Chad Leviner (Fr. • Mukwonago) in 3:45 at 125 pounds and Andy Miller toppled Jared Jaminski (Fr. • Wisconsin Rapids), 14-2, at 133.

UW-Oshkosh (5-13/0-4 WIAC) won three of the next four bouts and took a 16-14 lead following Kevin Luedtke's (Sr. • Two Rivers) pin of Seth Hendricks in 4:10 at 165 pounds. UW-Eau Claire regained the advantage at 20-16 in the next bout as Joey Miller pinned Eli Felts (Jr. • Appleton) in 5:38 at 174 pounds.

UW-Oshkosh cut its deficit to 20-19 on Pat Detmer's (Sr. • Lodi) 9-6 win over Ted Sikowski at 184 pounds, but the Titans' comeback ended with victories by the Blugolds in the final two bouts.

Other winners for UW-Oshkosh were Alex Mueller (Fr. • Jackson) at 141 pounds and Bradon Welter (Fr. • Merrill) at 157. Mueller posted a 12-4 victory over Greg Sonnentag while Welter pinned Jon Ames in 1:30.

Completing UW-Eau Claire's list of winners were Andy Johnston at 149 pounds, Josh Holforty at 197 and Nick Hoeft at 285. Johnston defeated John Dangles (So. • Naperville, Ill.), 11-3, Holforty pinned Eric Kuchan (Sr. • Whitewater) in 1:51 and Hoeft edged Mike Kratz (Jr. • Oconto Falls), 5-0.

Titans Goe 1-3 At Wisconsin/Illinois Border Brawl

Alex MuellerBradon Welter The UW-Oshkosh wrestling team finished 1-3 at the Wisconsin/Illinois Border Brawl held Saturday, (Jan. 26) in Whitewater.

UW-Oshkosh started the tournament with a 36-3 loss to North Central College (Ill.) and a 30-9 defeat to Elmhurst College (Ill.). UW-Oshkosh wrapped up the day with a 34-11 victory over Augustana College (Ill.) and a 25-10 loss to the University of Chicago (Ill.)

Against North Central College, the Titans' lone victory came at 157 pounds as Bradon Welter (Fr. • Merrill) defeated Cowan Brown 5-4.

UW-Oshkosh picked up three victories against Elmhurst College. Nick Stetzer (Fr. • Wausau) defeated Tyler Winland 11-6 at 125 pounds, Alex Mueller (Fr. • Jackson) blanked E-die Melgoza 2-0 at 141 pounds and Eli Felts (Jr. • Appleton) squeaked by Greg Horn 2-1 at 174 pounds.

In the win over Augustana College, the Titans recorded seven victories, including two pins. Picking up wins for the Titans included Jared Jaminski (Fr. • Wisconsin Rapids) over Mas Gailey 5-1 at 133 pounds, Mueller over Ron Moravce 18-2 at 141 pounds, Felts over Gabe Gardner 19-1 at 174-pounds and Pat Detmer (Sr. • Lodi) over Matt Nyukaza 13-6 at 197-pounds.

Pinning their opponents were Welter in 52 seconds over Kris Kovach at 157 pounds and Mike Kratz (Jr. • Oconto Falls) in 3:44 over Pat Kilroy at 285 pounds. Kevin Luedtke (Sr. • Two Rivers) received a forfeit win at 165 pounds to account for the final points for the Titans.

In the loss to the University of Chicago, the Titans picked up three victories. Jaminski defeated Ben Hart 5-3 at 133 pounds, Mueller dominated Matt Hart 14-4 at 141 pounds and Welter silenced Spencer Burns 11-5 at 157 pounds.

Mueller and Welter led the Titans on the day with a record of 3-1 and Felts and Jaminski tallied two wins each.

Titans Land One Second, Three Thirds
At Dan Gable Collegate Open

Jared JaminskiAlex MuellerJared Jaminski (Fr. • Wisconsin Rapids) finished second and Kevin Luedtke (Sr. • Two Rivers), Alex Mueller (Fr. • Jackson) and Bradon Welter (Fr. • Merrill) third to highlight the performances of the UW-Oshkosh wrestling team at the Dan Gable Open held Sunday (Jan. 20) in Kolf Sports Center.

The tournament, named after American wrestling legend Dan Gable, featured over 90 wrestlers from NCAA Division I, II or III schools. Proceeds from the event went to UW-Oshkosh’s Dan Gable Endowment Fund.

Jaminski achieved his second-place finish by defeating Purdue University's (Ind.) Bill Putman 7-3 and losing to UW-Eau Claire's Andy Miller 9-7 at 133-pounds.

Luedtke won three of his four matches to register a third-place finish at 165-pounds. Luedtke began competition with a 7-1 win over Danny Card who was wrestling unattached. Following a 4-1 loss to Purdue University's John Doyle, Luedtke bounced back with a pin over UW-Eau Claire's Seth Hendricks in 2:15 and a14-9 decision over Northwestern University's (Ill.) Robert Kellog.

Mueller recorded two pins on way to his third-place result at 141-pounds. Mueller first started with a pin over UW Milwaukee's Tom Hansen at 1:57 before losing by fall to Dan Ruettiger from Northern Illinois University at the 1:15 mark. Mueller finished the day with a 6-1 win over Brett Coffelt and a pin over Jeremiah Johnson in 5:58. Both Coffelt and Johnson were competing unattached.

Welter lost his opening bout by fall to Gabe Stoppelmoor of the University of Wisconsin at the 3:50 mark before rattling off four straight victories at 157 pounds. After losing to start the day he pinned UW-Eau Claire's Jonathan Ames in 2:42, pinned Tre Reed in 1:03, dominated UW-La Crosse's Jake Lewis 15-2 and beat UW-Platteville's Eddie Stefonek by injury forfeit. Reed was wrestling unattached.

UW-Oshkosh also had Chad Leviner (Fr. • Mukwonago) and Mike Kratz (Jr. • Oconto Falls) take fourth-place at 125 pounds and 285-pounds, respectively, after compiling a 2-2 record.

Leviner started the competition losing by pin to UW-Parkside's Cody Zimmerman in 3:50 and then beating UW-Eau Claire's Brandon Page, 10-6. After receiving a injury forfeit win over UW-Parkside's Brandon Kircher, Leviner lost to Zimmerman by technical fall at the 7:00 mark.

Kratz defeated UW-Eau Claire's Carl Bamlet, 4-1 before losing to UW-Eau Claire's Nick Hoeft by pin at the 4:45 mark. Kratz rebounded with a pin over UW-Eau Claire's Daniel Coughlin at 1:15 before losing to UW-Eau Claire's Ryan Eckdahl by fall at the 5:46 mark.

Also competing for the Titans were John Dangles (So. • Naperville, Ill.) at 149-pounds, Derek Koenig (Jr. • Cleveland) at 149-pounds, Ian Sauer (So. • Brodhead) at 165-pounds, Eric Kuchan (Sr. • Whitewater) at 174-pounds, Eli Felts (Jr. • Appleton) at 174-pounds and Pat Detmer (Sr. • Lodi) at 184-pounds.

Titans To Host Dan Gable Collegiate Open

The UW-Oshkosh wrestling team will host the Fifth Annual Dan Gable Collegiate Open on Sunday (Jan. 20) in Kolf Sports Center.

Nearly 125 wrestlers are expected to take part in the event, including competitors from Northern Illinois University, Northwestern University (Ill.), Purdue University (Ind.), University of Wisconsin, UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse, UW-Oshkosh and UW-Parkside.

The tournament, named after American wrestling legend Dan Gable, begins at 9 a.m. Proceeds from the event go to the endowment fund that supports the UW-Oshkosh wrestling program.

10th-Ranked Warhawks Defeat Titans

Derek KoenigThe UW-Whitewater wrestling team recorded two pins and won three other bouts by less then two points to record a 37-6 victory over UW-Oshkosh in a contest held on Wednesday (Jan. 16) in Whitewater.

Austin Bautista got the Warhawks rolling in the 141-pound bout when he pinned Alex Mueller (Fr. • Jackson) in 5:54 to take a quick 6-0 advantage.

UW-Oshkosh (3-9/0-3 WIAC) knotted the score in the 149-pound match when Derek Koenig (Jr. • Cleveland) pinned Matt Schuck in only 52 seconds. It was all UW-Whitewater from there as Tom Trieloff recorded a technical fall in 5:41 (21-6) over UW-Oshkosh's Bradon Welter (Fr. • Merrill) at 157 pounds.

The Warhawks narrowly won the next two bouts as Pat Nagel beat Kevin Luedtke (Sr. • Two Rivers), 8-6 at 165 pounds and Rob Schoner defeated Eli Felts (Jr. • Appleton), 4-3 at 174 pounds.

UW-Whitewater (6-7/2-1 WIAC) continued their run when David Casper handled Eric Kuchan (Sr. • Whitewater), 15-5 at 184 pounds and Jason Johnson slipped by Eric Coughlin (Fr. • Columbus), 7-3 at 197 pounds.

In another close contest, the Warhawks' Jon Schmidt trimmed Mike Kratz (Jr. • Oconto Falls), 2-1 at 285 pounds.

UW-Whitewater finished the match-up with a pin by Jeremy Johnson over Chad Leviner (Fr. • Mukonago) in the 125-pound bout in 2:40 and a 12-3 victory by Kyle Wachholder over Jared Jaminski (Fr. • Wisconsin Rapids) at 133 pounds.

UW-Whitewater entered the dual meet ranked 10th in the NCAA Division III by the National Collegiate Wrestling Association.

Titans Enjoys Two Second-Place Finishes
At Milwaukee School of Engineering Invitational

Jared JaminskiKevin Luedtke Despite not having a competitor in three weight classes, the UW-Oshkosh wrestling team captured third place at the 10-team Milwaukee School of Engineering Invitational held on Saturday (Dec. 1) in Milwaukee.

The Titans were led by Chad Leviner (Fr. • Mukwonago) and Jared Jaminski (Fr. • Wisconsin Rapids) who took runner-up honors at 125 pounds and 133 pounds, respectively.

UW-Platteville took first place with 133.5 points, followed by second-place Lakeland College with 131.5, third-place UW-Oshkosh with 75.5 and fourth-place Milwaukee School of Engineering and Wheaton College (Ill.) with 65.5 each.

Leviner started the tournament by pinning Wheaton College’s Ben Allen in 44 seconds and edging MSOE’s Dominic Deligio, 2-1 in the semifinals. Leviner was beaten by MSOE’s Sammy Deligio, 6-2 in the championship match.

Jaminski finished in second place by dominating UW-Platteville’s by major decision Chris Spaude, 15-6 and then beating UW-Platteville’s Spencer Petersen, 10-4 in the semifinals. Jaminski lost to Lakeland College’s Kory Theil, 14-6 in the finals.

Taking fourth place for UW-Oshkosh were Nick Stetzer (Fr. • Wausau) at 125 pounds and Alex Mueller (Fr. • Jackson) at 141 pounds. Nick Stetzer defeated number one seed David Copp from Lakeland College, 5-0 and then was trimmed by Sammy Deligio, 6-5 in the semifinals. In the consolation bracket, Stetzer pinned Dan Crowley of Concordia University in 1:50 and lost to Copp in the third-place match, 4-1.

Mueller lost his first bout to UW-Platteville’s Matt McGill, 7-2 and then defeated Concordia University’s Diontay Lacey, 11-3 in the consolation round. Mueller next squeaked by number two seed Virgil Pope of MSOE, 3-2. In the third place match, Mueller was beaten by number one seed Brent Skorup of Wheaton College, 8-3.

The Titans had a trio of fifth-place performances in Derek Koenig (Jr. • Cleveland) at 149 pounds, Kevin Luedtke (Sr. • Two Rivers) at 165 pounds and Eli Felts (Jr. • Appleton) at 174 pounds.

Koenig first pinned Lakeland College’s Clint Harbord in 3:23 and then lost to Lawrence University’s Tony Norton, 6-1. In the consolation round, Koenig pinned Wheaton College’s Tim Hedberg in 2:17 and then beat MSOE’s Matt Meiselman, 7-2. After losing to MSOE’s Elliot Gronland, 6-3, Koenig captured fifth-place by cruising by Lakeland College’s Harbord, 6-2.

Luedtke dismantled UW-Platteville’s Aaron Konitzer by major decision, 21-9, and then dominated Lakeland College’s Jake Frias by major decision, 15-5. In the semifinals, Luedtke was trimmed, 3-2, by number one seed Thomas Kopeitz of St. Olaf College (Minn.). In the consolation round, Luedtke lost his second consecutive bout by one point, 6-5, to Lawrence University’s Sam Laes. In the fifth-place match, Luedtke beat Frias for a second time, 10-4.

Felts began the day with a technical fall over Knox College’s (Iowa) Aaron Barnett, 16-0, before being trimmed, 4-3 by St. Olaf College’s Justin Bain. In the consolation bracket Felts was defeated, 5-1 by UW-Platteville’s Cory Zeberbier before rebounding with a, 4-1 win over Concordia University’s Jeff Elswick in the fifth-place match.

Other UW-Oshkosh wrestlers picking up two wins at the invitational were 133-pounder Nate Stetzer (Fr. • Wausau) and 165-pounder Eric Kuchan (Sr. • Whitewater). Stetzer won both of his bouts via pins.

Pointers Oust Titans

Bradon WelterThe UW-Oshkosh wrestling team lost two bouts by two points and could not overcome two forfeits in a 26-15 defeat to UW-Stevens Point on Wednesday (Nov. 28) in Kolf Sports Center.

The Pointers (5-2/1-0 WIAC) stormed out to a 18-0 lead after Jake Calhoun edged Chad Leviner (Fr. • Mukwonago), 2-0, at 125 pounds and Jared Kern squeaked by Jared Jaminski (Fr. • Wisconsin Rapids), 7-5, at 133 pounds.

UW-Stevens Points also received 12 points by forfeit as Craig Bollig won at 197 pounds and Chad Gregory won at 285.

UW-Oshkosh (1-4/0-2 WIAC) and UW-Stevens Point traded wins for the next four bouts when the Titans' Alex Mueller (Fr. • Jackson) defeated Matt Theisen, 9-7, at 141 pounds and the Pointers' Kyle Mueller overwhelmed Derek Koenig (Jr. • Cleveland), 21-4, at 149 pounds.

UW-Oshkosh's Bradon Welter (Fr. • Merrill) recorded the only pin of the match when he flattened Fred Lane at the 5:58 mark in the 157-pound match. UW-Stevens Point's Jake Wozniak then beat Kevin Luedtke (Sr. • Two Rivers), 10-3, at 165 pounds.

UW-Oshkosh was victorious in next two weight classes as Eli Felts (Jr. • Appleton) trimmed Dennis Reckelberg, 3-1, at 184 pounds and Pat Detmer (Sr. • Lodi) hung on for a 10-6 win over Dustin Robinson at 184.

UW-Stevens Point won 25-12 last season in a battle of nationally-ranked teams.

Coe College Invitational Kind To Titans

Jared JaminskiKevin Luedtke The UW-Oshkosh wrestling team enjoyed six, top-five performances, including a second-place result from Jared Jaminski (Fr. • Wisconsin Rapids) at the Coe College (Iowa) Invitational held Saturday (Nov. 17) in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Jaminski, competing at 133 pounds, started his day doubling up Coe College's Jared Harding, 10-5, and dominating Truman State University's (Mo.) Dan Keller, 7-1. In the championship match he was beaten by Coe College's Gannon Hjerleid, 18-7.

Other top performances for the Titans included a third-place result from Kevin Luedtke (Sr. • Two Rivers), fourth-place finishes from Eric Coughlin (Fr. • Columbus) and Alex Mueller (Fr. • Jackson) and fifth-place showings from Eric Kuchan (Sr. • Whitewater) and Chad Leviner (Fr. • Mukwonago).

Luedtke, wrestling at 165 pounds, pasted Coe College's Lucas Pontier, 10-2, and then lost to Truman State University's Blake Petersen, 15-3. Luedtke tallied his third-place finish by pinning teammate Kuchan in 1:45 and defeating fellow Titans' comrade Coughlin, 14-5.

Coughlin's fourth-place day started with a pin over York College's (Neb.) Benjamin Woodburn in :35 and losing by fall to Truman State University's Blake Peterson in 2:18 in the 165 pound weight class. Coughlin continued with another pin over York College's Clayton Davis in 2:30 and beating Missouri Baptist University's Zachery Fears, 11-8. Coughlin finished the invitational with a loss to Luedtke.

Competing at 165 pounds, Kuchan began his fifth-place showing by losing by fall to Coe College's Tyler Burkle in :46 and pinning York College's Woodburn in a minute :29. After beating Cornell College's (Iowa) Nat Kaiser, 12-4, Kuchan suffered the loss to Luedtke before dominating Missouri Baptist University's Fears, 12-2.

At 125 pounds, Leviner reached his fifth-place performance by beating Waldorf College's (Iowa) Rich Leal, 9-7 and Cornell College's Cole Manson, 8-4. Leviner next suffered a 17-2 loss to Truman State University's Rob Nahlic and a slim, 3-2 defeat to Missouri Baptist University's Abbas Emamjome. In the fifth-place bout, Leviner edged teammate Nick Stetzer (Fr. • Wausau), 5-3.

Stetzer lost his first match-up, 18-7 to Missouri Baptist University's Michael Aitch and followed with a 12-1 victory over Cornell College's Cole Mason and a pin over unattached Jeff Ohenmus in 1:40. Aitch beat Stetzer for the second time during the tournament with a pin at 1:03 and then Stetzer ended his day against Leviner.

Also picking up victories for the Titans were John Dangles (So. • Naperville, Ill.) and Derek Koenig (Jr. • Cleveland) at 149 pounds, Dallas Moe (So. • Seymour) at 157 pounds, Eli Felts (Jr. • Appleton) at 174 pounds and Pat Detmer (Sr. • Lodi) at 184 pounds.

Dangles' day consisted of a 7-4 loss to Bacone College's (Okla.) Mark Burkart, a 10-1 thrashing of Turman State University's Steve Kueny and a 6-1 loss to Cornell College's Aaron Kindelsperger. Koening pinned Cornell College's Aaron Bartels at 4:39, lost a tough 17-13 decision to Waldorf College's Ryan Garcia and suffered a loss via pin at the 1:36 mark to Kindelsperger.

Moe beat Missouri Baptist University's Gerald Harris, 11-3, lost to Coe College's Ryan Helenthal, 15-9 and lost in 22 seconds by pin to Truman State University's Andy Bader.

After losing his first match, 6-0 to Cornell College's Kyle Kerhli, Felts won two straight bouts before being beat 12-3 by Wartburg College's Grant Jenkins and losing 6-1 to Coe College's Seth Rehn in the fifth-place contest. Felts' victories included a 17-2 hammering over Cornell College's Clifford Robertson and a pin over York College's Ryan Kromer at 3:40.

Detmer enjoyed a 2-2 day by winning his first match, 4-2 over Wartburg College's Kyle Campbell and losing, 3-1 to Coe College's Mike Christensen. Detmer finished the day by throttling Cornell College's Carmen Sacco, 14-5 and losing, 10-7 to Truman State University's Bryan Isabell.

UW-Oshkosh's Ian Sauer (So. • Brodhead) participated at 157 pounds and Nate Stetzer (Fr. • Wausau) competed at 133 pounds. Both finished 0-2 on the day.

The invitational featured NCAA Division III second ranked Wartburg College, seventh ranked Coe College and 10th-ranked Cornell College and NCAA Division II 20th ranked Truman State University.

Titans Lose WIAC Opener

Eli FeltsVinny Alber recorded the lone pin of the match as the UW-Platteville wrestling team defeated UW-Oshkosh, 31-10, on Thursday (Nov. 15) in Platteville. It was the WIAC season opener for both teams.

UW-Platteville (3-2/1-0 WIAC) had the winner in seven of the 10 weight classes, with Fox pinning UW-Oshkosh’s Alex Mueller (Fr. • Jackson) at 141 pounds in 3:46.
The remaining six victories for the Warhawks included Paul Wochinski's forfeit win at 285 pounds and Dillon Pontnack's 22-6 win over UW-Oshkosh’s Derek Koenig (Jr. • Cleveland) at 149 pounds.

UW-Oshkosh (1-3/0-1 WIAC) picked up its three wins on the efforts of Chad Leviner (Fr. • Mukwonago) at 125 pounds, Jared Jaminski (Fr. • Wisconsin Rapids) at 133 pounds and Eli Felts (Jr. • Appleton) at 184 pounds. Leviner dominated UW-Platteville's Brett Olson, 14-6, while Jaminski edged the Pioneers’ Jeff Gale, 16-13. Felts battled to a 4-2 victory over UW-Platteville’s Brad Zellner.

UW-Oshkosh’s closest loss came at 197 pounds, where the Titans’ Pat Detmer (Sr. • Lodi) dropped an 8-7 decision to the Pioneers’ Michael Jackowski.

Other bouts included UW-Platteville's Ryan Higgins doubling up UW-Oshkosh's Dallas Moe (So. • Seymour), 20-10, at 157 pounds, the Pioneers' Jesse Milks beating the Titans' Brad Welter (Fr. • Merrill), 14-3, at 165 pounds and UW-Platteville's Carsten Carlsen defeating UW-Oshkosh's Kevin Luedtke (Sr. • Two Rivers), 10-4, at 174 pounds.

Titans Compete At Pointer Open

Eric CoughlinEric Coughlin (Fr. • Columbus) took third place to pace the UW-Oshkosh wrestling team at the UW-Stevens Point Pointer Open held Saturday (Nov. 10) in Stevens Point. The event was non-scoring.

Competing in the 165-pound weight class in the silver division, Coughlin went 4-1 in route to his third-place performance. Coughlin started the day with a 6-2 decision over Matt Baier of Rochester Community & Technology College (Minn.) and a 3-2 verdict over Eric Jacobs of Upper Iowa University. After losing 7-3 to Harper College's (Ill.) Mike Dace, Coughlin blanked Luke Rynish 4-0 of UW-Parkside and won by a 16-4 major decision over Luke Evjen of Rochester Community & Technology College.

Winning three bouts for the Titans in the gold division 174-pound weight class was Eli Felts (Jr. • Appleton). Felts lost his opening round to Kevin Flinn of the University of Indianapolis (Ind.) 7-2 before winning three consecutive matches. After receiving a bye in the second round, Felts beat Darin Kwilinski of UW-Milwaukee 4-2, conquered Lance Valiquette who was wrestling unattached by injury default and Chris Karl of UW-Stevens Point 4-1. Felts ended the tournament with a 2-0 loss to Cornell College's (Iowa) Kyle Kehrli.

Chad Leviner (Fr. • Mukwonago), Jered Jaminski (Fr. • Wisconsin Rapids), Alex Mueller (Fr. • Jackson) and Kevin Luedtke (Sr. • Two Rivers) all finished 2-2 during the one-day event.

Leviner, wrestling in the 125-pound weight class in the silver division lost his first contest by a pin at 5:58 by Alex Helmich of Wartburg College (Iowa). He followed that with a 4-3 decision over teammate Nick Stetzer (Fr. • Wausau) and a 12-6 result over Justin Serak of UW-Whitewater. Leviner ended the competition with a loss to Brandon Music of UW-Whitewater by pin at the 5:14 mark.

Jaminski, competing in the 133-pound weight class in the silver division won his opening round match with a 17-4 major decision over Jerod Schmocker of Winona State University (Minn.). Trevor Franklin of Upper Iowa University turned the tables in the next round by beating Schmocker by a 13-2 major decision. After receiving a bye, Schmocker pinned Blake Harvery of the University of Indianapolis in 3:03 and lost 12-2 by major decision to Chris Conte of the University of Indianapolis.

Mueller, who was performing in the 149-pound weight class sliver division, pinned Luther College's (Iowa) Jason Pyle in 1:59 to start the day. Mueller lost 6-3 to Upper Iowa University's Scott Fuller, won 5-3 over UW-Whitewater's Alex Mueller and received payback by Pyle by being pinned in 3:29 to close out the tournament.

Luedeke, who was wrestling in the 165-pound weight class gold bracket lost to North Central College's (Ill.) Ben Youel 6-3 in the opening contest. We followed with a 6-2 decision over Brandon Garner of the University of Indianapolis, a pin over Dave Walpole of the University of Indianapolis and an 8-6 defeat to UW-Stevens Point's Jake Wozniak.

UW-Oshkosh also had Ian Sauer (So. • Brodhead), Dallas Moe (So. • Seymour), Eric Kuchan (Sr. • Whitewater) and Pat Detmer (Sr. • Lodi) pick up a win during the event.

Titans Start Season With 1-2 Record

Pat DetmerJared Jaminski The UW-Oshkosh wrestling team opened its 2007-08 season with a victory over the University of Dubuque (Iowa) and losses to Tri-State University (Ind.) and NCAA Division I University of Wisconsin on Friday (Nov. 2) at the KI Convention Center in Green Bay.

The University of Wisconsin went unbeaten in the round-robin event by defeating the University of Dubuque, 58-0, Tri-State University, 45-6 and UW-Oshkosh, 53-0. Prior to its loss to the University of Wisconsin, UW-Oshkosh loss to Tri-State University 22-16 and defeated the University of Dubuque, 34-14. The University of Dubuque picked up a dual meet victory by squeaking by Tri-State University 22-21.

Pat Detmer (Sr. • Lodi), Jared Jaminski (Fr. • Wisconsin Rapids) and Travis Stolze (Fr. • Wausau) each picked up two victories on the day to pace the Titans.

Tied 10-10 against the University of Dubuque, UW-Oshkosh won five of the last six bouts, including three by fall, to pull out the win.

On the mat, UW-Oshkosh received victories from Jaminski at 133 pounds, Dallas Moe (So. • Seymour) at 157 pounds, Kevin Luedtke (Sr. • Two Rivers) at 165 pounds, Eli Felts (Jr. • Appleton) Detmer at 197 pounds and Travis Stolze at 285 pounds. Derek Koenig (Jr. • Cleveland) won his 149 pound battle by forfeit.

Detmer pinned Matt Wonderlin in 2:31 to record the fastest fall on the day by UW-Oshkosh. Also recording pins against the Spartans were Moe over Matt Evans in 4:53 and Stolze over Nick Hagen in 5:57. The Titans also had Jaminski handle Adam Canty, 16-6, Luedtke trip Evan Brown, 8-4 and Felts trim Cesar Dominguez, 2-1 Winners for the University of Dubuque were Andrew Taylor at 125 pounds, Mark Schultz at 141 pounds and Joshua Terell at 165 pounds.

In the defeat by the Thunder, UW-Oshkosh recorded victories by Chad Leviner (Fr. • Mukwonago) at 125 pounds, Jaminski, James Dederich (So. • Menomonee Falls) at 165 pounds, Detmer and Stolze. Leviner defeated Levi Mundy, 12-6, Jaminski slipped by Thomas Pompei, 7-6, Dederich handled Matt Perry, 10-2, Detmer trimmed Alex Fleet, 9-7, and Stolze quieted Kyle Brown, 7-3.

The University of Dubuque also won five bouts with the difference in scoring coming via two pins. Kyle Pittman was able to get by Koenig at 149 pounds at the 4:19 mark and Nick Kraus defeated Kevin Luedtke at 174 pounds at the 6:31 mark. Other Tri-State University winners included Brian Wight at 141 pounds, Zane Stenz at 157 pounds and Louis Posa at 184 pounds.

As expected, the 12th ranked University of Wisconsin had little difficulty defeating UW-Oshkosh. The Badgers won six contests against UW-Oshkosh on pins, two on technical falls and another on a forfeit. The only points scored by the Titans was by Detmer who lost a 14-5 decision to Trevor Brandvold at 184 pounds.

Titans To Triple Their Fun In Season Opener

UW-Oshkosh opens its 2007-08 wrestling season with an abundance of activity as the Titans battle Tri-State University (Ind.), University of Dubuque (Iowa) and NCAA Division I University of Wisconsin on Friday (Nov. 2) at the KI Convention Center in Green Bay.

UW-Oshkosh, which posted a 6-7 dual meet record a year ago, will wrestle Tri-State University at 9 a.m., the University of Dubuque at 10:30 a.m. and the University of Wisconsin at noon.

Matches will also be held at 9 a.m. between the University of Dubuque and the University of Wisconsin, at 10:30 a.m. between Tri-State University and the University of Wisconsin and at noon between Tri-State University and the University of Dubuque.

It will be the sixth meeting between UW-Oshkosh and the University of Wisconsin, with the Badgers winning last year's match in Green Bay, 40-3. The University of Wisconsin also defeated UW-Oshkosh by scores of 23-12 in 1969-70, 24-8 in 1970-71, 46-6 in 2004-05 and 51-0 in 2005-06.

The University of Wisconsin enters the 2007-08 season ranked 12th in the country by Amateur Wrestling News. Last year, the Badgers finished 13th at the NCAA Division I Championship.

Duane Kleven, who coached wrestling at both UW-Oshkosh and the University of Wisconsin, will be the honorary captain for the match between the Titans and the Badgers.

UW-Oshkosh and the University of Dubuque are meeting for the third straight year. The Titans won last year's contest, 29-10, while the Spartans won a 2005-06 debate, 31-12.

UW-Oshkosh and Tri-State University are competing against each other on the mat for the first time.

Titans' 2007-08 Schedule
Includes First Appearance at National Duals

A match against NCAA Division I University of Wisconsin and an appearance at the National Wrestling Coaches Association's (NWCA) National Duals are among the highlights on UW-Oshkosh's 2007-08 wrestling schedule.

UW-Oshkosh kicks off the 2007-08 campaign with dual meets against the University of Dubuque (Iowa), Tri-State University (Ind.) and the University of Wisconsin on Nov. 2 at the KI Convention Center in Green Bay. Last year, UW-Oshkosh defeated the University of Dubuque, 29-10, while suffering a 40-3 loss to the University of Wisconsin in Green Bay. The University of Wisconsin posted a 19-3 record and placed 13th at the NCAA Division I Championship a year ago.

UW-Oshkosh then competes at the UW-Stevens Point Open on Nov. 10 before opening WIAC play with a dual meet at UW-Platteville on Nov. 15. The Titans compiled a 26-19 victory over the Pioneers in last year's WIAC opener.

UW-Oshkosh moves on to compete at the Coe College Invitational on Nov. 17 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, before entertaining UW-Stevens Point on Nov. 28 in Kolf Sports Center. The Titans will also host Lakeland College, the Milwaukee School of Engineering and Wheaton College (Ill.) in a quadrangular on Dec. 8 and Lawrence University in a dual meet on Feb. 15.

Another event sponsored by UW-Oshkosh is the Dan Gable Collegiate Open on Jan. 20. The tournament, named after an American wrestling legend, is expected to draw nearly 100 competitors. Proceeds from the event go to the UW-Oshkosh wrestling program's endowment fund.

UW-Oshkosh's first competition of 2008 will be a visit to the NWCA's National Duals on Jan. 12-13 at the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa. UW-Oshkosh was among 16 NCAA Division III squads invited to the prestigious tournament, with the upcoming appearance being the first for the Titans. The invitation list also included defending NCAA Division III champion Augsburg College (Minn.), Buena Vista University (Iowa), Delaware Valley College (Pa.), Luther College (Iowa), North Central College (Ill.), Ohio Northern University, Olivet College (Mich.), UW-La Crosse and Wartburg College (Iowa).

Other tournaments on tap for UW-Oshkosh are the Milwaukee School of Engineering Invitational on Dec. 1, the Wisconsin/Illinois Border Brawl on Jan. 26 and the UW-Eau Claire Invitational on Feb. 2.

UW-Oshkosh's dual meet schedule concludes with matches at UW-Whitewater on Jan. 16, UW-Eau Claire on Feb. 1 and defending WIAC champion UW-La Crosse on Feb. 8.

UW-Oshkosh closes its season with an appearance at the WIAC Championship on Feb. 24 in Appleton. The NCAA Division III Championship will be held March 7-8 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
